Background: One of the most common causes of hypothyroidism is Hashimoto´s Thyroiditis (HT). Early detection of dry mouth is critical in preserving and promoting systemic and oral health. In this study we have assessed, for the first time, salivary function and xerostomia in HT patients who have not been involved with Sjögren´s syndrome. Material and Methods: HT was diagnosed in 40 patients based on clinical findings and positive anti-thyroid peroxidase antibodies (anti-TPO). Controls, matched by sex, age and body mass index (BMI), and with no history of thyroid disease, were selected. A questionnaire was used for diagnosis of xerostomia. Saliva samples were taken between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m., and at least 2 hours after the last intake of food or drink. The flow rate was calculated in milliliters per minute. Results: Xerostomia was significantly higher in patients with HT. Unstimulated salivary flow rate was significantly lower in the HT group. Stimulated salivary flow rate was lower in HT ...
Dry Mouth Questionnaire (DMQ) was used in order to obtain subjective information about the severity of xerostomia before and after treatment with malic acid/placebo.. Every participant answered an initial questionnaire (DMQ 1) about the symptoms related to oral dryness, before receiving a spray (1% malic acid or placebo). After two weeks of applications, patients had to answer DMQ 1 again as well as an additional questionnaire (DMQ 2) about the efficacy of the sprays. Increased DMQ scores indicate improvement of xerostomia. DMQ 1 was used to assess the initial severity of oral dryness and in particular its impact on oral function: problems when chewing, swallowing, speaking and general impact on daily life.. DMQ 1 used a 0-to-4 rating scale where 0 = very dry and 4 = not dry at all. After two weeks of treatment, DMQ 1 was repeated and it was included DMQ 2.. At the end values of DMQ 1 and DMQ 2 were summed ...

In the last few years, several new posterior composites and light curing trends have been introduced that are intended to reduce the number of steps and save time when placing a posterior composite restoration. Bulk curing resin composites are now available that produce less shrinkage stress and can be light cured in up to 5 mm thick increments instead of the customary 2 mm thickness. Also, now that high output LED curing lights are available, this has created an expectation that teeth can be restored using just one large increment of composite in a shorter curing time. However, photo-curing of dental composites is governed by an array of complex interactions such as the light intensity, exposure time, photoinitiator system, initiator/light source spectral overlap, and the collective material optical properties. Consequently, light curing dental materials is not as simple as light on, and light off. This CE webinar will attempt to provide some insights into the complexities of ...
Xerostomia is the medical term for dry mouth. What causes it? Numerous medications, damage to certain nerves in the neck or head caused by injury or radiotherapy, smoking, or problems with your salivary glands due to illnesses such as diabetes and Parkinsons. In addition to being uncomfortable, xerostomia can cause swallowing problems, alter your sense of taste, and promote the development of plaque and tooth decay. Some causes of dry mouth can be directly targeted to eliminate the symptom. In other cases, certain techniques can minimize the problem, such as frequently drinking small sips of water, sucking on ice cubes or sugarless candy, using saliva substitutes, or avoiding factors that can aggravate the condition (eating foods that are too salty, using mouthwash containing alcohol, smoking, etc.). You should also maintain good oral hygiene to prevent tooth decay and gingivitis. For more advice, see your health professional! ...
Aim. The aim of this research was to determine the prevalence, natural history, antecedents, associations, and impacts of xerostomia on oral health in a longitudinal cohort of adults in their thirties from the Dunedin Multidisciplinary Health and Development Study (DMHDS) in New Zealand. Methods. The data were collected from 972 Study members at age 32 and 961 Study members at age 38 through face-to-face interviews, self-administered questionnaires, and clinical assessments. Information was analysed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 17.0 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA). Univariate analysis was undertaken to describe the sociodemographic characteristics of the sample followed by bivariate analysis and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) to examine the associations between the dependent variable (xerostomia) and the independent variables. Chi-square tests were used to examine the statistical significance in differences found with a p value of ,0.05 considered ...

Insulin-dependent type-1 diabetes mellitus (DM) and oral diseases are closely interrelated. Poor metabolic control in diabetics is associated with a high risk of gingivitis, periodontitis and tooth loss. Salivary flow declines in diabetics and patients suffer from xerostomia. Reduced saliva predisposes to enamel hypomineralization and caries formation; however, the mechanisms that initiate and lead to progression of tooth decay and periodontitis in type-1 DM have not been explored. To address this issue, we analyzed tooth morphology in Akita-/- mice that harbor a point mutation in the Ins2 insulin gene which leads to insulin deficiency and hyperglycemia. Objective: To characterize the tooth phenotype in Akita-/- mice and determine whether hyperglycemia and hyposalivation contribute to dental defects. Methods: Mandibles from Akita-/- and wild type littermates were analyzed by microCT, scanning EM and histology; teeth were examined for amelogenin and ameloblastin expression. Mice were injected ...

Everybody gets a dry mouth from time to time. Temporary mouth dryness can be brought on by dehydration, stress, or simply the normal reduction in saliva flow at night. But persistent mouth dryness, a condition known as xerostomia, is cause for concern.. Xerostomia occurs when your salivary glands, which normally keep your mouth moist by secreting saliva, are not working properly. A chronic lack of saliva has significant health implications. For one thing, it can be difficult to eat with a dry mouth; tasting, chewing and swallowing may also be affected. This could compromise your nutrition. Also, a dry mouth creates ideal conditions for tooth decay. Thats because saliva plays a very important role in keeping decay-causing oral bacteria in check and neutralizing the acids these bacteria produce; it is the acid in your mouth that erodes tooth enamel and starts the decay process. A dry mouth can also cause bad breath.. ...

Patients with diminished salivary flow have several options for treating salivary gland hypofunction (SGH), also known as xerostomia.
Xerostomia is a common condition among elderly. The objectives were to examine prevalence, persistence, progression, yearly incidence of xerostomia, associated background factors and its influence on oral impacts on daily performances (OIDP) in 50- to 80-year-old people. In 1992, a questionnaire was sent to all 50-year-old (n = 8888) and in 2007 to all 75-year-old persons (n = 5195) living in two Swedish counties. In 2012, the same questionnaire was sent to both age cohorts, now 70- and 80-year-old. Response rate was for the 50-, 70- 75- and 80-year-old groups 71.4%, 72.2%, 71.9% and 66.4%, respectively. In the 50- to 70-year-old sample, 40.3% of the participants answered all five examinations and in the 75-80 group 49.5% (intact samples). In all age groups, xerostomia was significantly more prevalent in women than in men. At age 80, "often mouth dryness at night" was reported by 24.3% and 16.2% of women and men, respectively. Prevalence increased with age and was more frequent at night-time. ...

Xylitol has been shown to reduce plaque by inhibiting bacterial growth, decrease caries, and stimulate salivary flow. The effects last longer than the flavor of gum or the dissolution of a hard sugar-free candy. Due to its unique adherence to the oral tissues, XyliMelts are the only xerostomia product that may be used during the night. They are perfect for your xerostomia patients, due to their portability and ease of use. They are the over-the-counter treatment of choice for the multitude of our patients who suffer from xerostomia ...
Saliva is one of your bodys natural defenses against plaque because it acts to rinse your mouth of cavity-causing bacteria and other harmful materials. Dry mouth (also called Xerostomia) is a fairly common condition that is caused by diminished saliva production. People with medical conditions, such as an eating disorder or diabetes, are often plagued by dry mouth. Eating foods such as garlic, tobacco use, and some kinds of medications, including treatments such as cancer therapy can diminish the bodys production of saliva, leading to dry mouth. Other causes are related to aging (including rheumatoid arthritis), and compromised immune systems ...

Studies conducted on outpatients and in the general population show that xerostomia affects about 1 in 4 people.8 Salivary flow rate patterns demonstrate both daily and seasonal variation, with peaks in mid-afternoon and higher flow rates in the winter than in the summer. During sleep, saliva flow rate is minimal.9 People who complain of dry mouth do not necessarily have a very low flow rate; conversely, those with a low unstimulated flow rate do not always complain of dry mouth. It is therefore of greater significance to establish Whether or not the flow rate has changed adversely in a particular individual.10 ...

In 1995, I was diagnosed with throat cancer and had to have radiation therapy. I lost my saliva glands and sense of taste. As a result of this, I suffer from extreme dry mouth. Over the years, my oncologist gave me many different kinds of products to relieve my dry mouth symptoms, but nothing helped. Due to the lack of saliva in my mouth, I had many cavities and had to have my upper teeth extracted and get dentures and then I had to get a bridge for my lower teeth! So, in addition to suffering from dry mouth, my mouth is very sore. Just recently, I was given a tube of GC Dry Mouth Gel from my dentist and it has been such a relief to me. It lasts a long time - if I have to get up in the middle of the night, I just run my tongue around my mouth and GC Dry Mouth Gel is still working. I wish this product was available back in 1995! ...
Dry mouth, also referred to as xerostomia or hyposalivation, occurs when your saliva-producing glands arent functioning properly. Its usually a symptom linked to a diagnosable condition or certain medications, with symptoms of its own that includes, well, no surprise, dryness in your mouth, difficulty in swallowing, cracked lips, bad breath, loss of your ability to taste foods, a raw tongue, excessive thirst, and dried-out nasal passages.

Dry mouth can also be a symptom of an autoimmune disease such as rheumatoid arthritis or Sjogrens syndrome or related to conditions like diabetes and Parkinsons disease, and it is a common and unpleasant side effect of radiation therapy to the head and neck. If you are having trouble chewing, that, too, can lead to dry mouth. Dry mouth is more than just an uncomfortable annoyance; it can lead to serious dental problems.
