Background: Xerostomia is a common problem in older people, and the SXI is increasingly being used to measure it. Materials and methods: The SXI questionnaire was cross-culturally adapted to create an Indonesian version (SXI-ID), which was assessed for validity and reliability in a cross-sectional study of older adults living in nursing homes in Jakarta, Indonesia. Each participant signed an informed consent and was interviewed with the SXI-ID. A subset of participants was interviewed again after two weeks. A standard question was used to check criterion-related validity, by plotting ...
Background: One of the most common causes of hypothyroidism is Hashimoto´s Thyroiditis (HT). Early detection of dry mouth is critical in preserving and promoting systemic and oral health. In this study we have assessed, for the first time, salivary function and xerostomia in HT patients who have not been involved with Sjögren´s syndrome. Material and Methods: HT was diagnosed in 40 patients based on clinical findings and positive anti-thyroid peroxidase antibodies (anti-TPO). Controls, matched by sex, age and body mass index (BMI), and with no history of thyroid disease, were selected. A questionnaire was used for diagnosis of xerostomia. Saliva samples were taken between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m., and at least 2 hours after the last intake of food or drink. The flow rate was calculated in milliliters per minute. Results: Xerostomia was significantly higher in patients with HT. Unstimulated salivary flow rate was significantly lower in the HT group. Stimulated salivary flow rate was lower in HT ...

Xerostomia induced by radiotherapy: an overview of the physiopathology, clinical evidence, and management of the oral damage Roberto Pinna,1 Guglielmo Campus,2 Enzo Cumbo,3 Ida Mura,1 Egle Milia2 1Department of Biomedical Science, 2Department of Surgery, Microsurgery and Medicine, University of Sassari, Sassari, 3Department of Dental Science, University of Palermo, Palermo, Italy Background: The irradiation of head and neck cancer (HNC) often causes damage to the salivary glands. The resulting salivary gland hypofunction and xerostomia seriously reduce the patient’s quality of life. Purpose: To analyze the literature of actual management strategies for radiation-induced hypofunction and xerostomia in HNC patients. Methods: MEDLINE/PubMed and the Cochrane Library databases were electronically evaluated for articles published from January 1, 1970, to June 30, 2013. Dry Mouth Questionnaire (DMQ) was used in order to obtain subjective information about the severity of xerostomia before and after treatment with malic acid/placebo.. Every participant answered an initial questionnaire (DMQ 1) about the symptoms related to oral dryness, before receiving a spray (1% malic acid or placebo). After two weeks of applications, patients had to answer DMQ 1 again as well as an additional questionnaire (DMQ 2) about the efficacy of the sprays. Increased DMQ scores indicate improvement of xerostomia. DMQ 1 was used to assess the initial severity of oral dryness and in particular its impact on oral function: problems when chewing, swallowing, speaking and general impact on daily life.. DMQ 1 used a 0-to-4 rating scale where 0 = very dry and 4 = not dry at all. After two weeks of treatment, DMQ 1 was repeated and it was included DMQ 2.. At the end values of DMQ 1 and DMQ 2 were summed ...

To assess the impact of intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) versus conventional radiation on late xerostomia and Quality of Life aspects in head and neck cancer patients. Questionnaires on xerostomia in rest and during meals were sent to all patients treated between January 1999 and December 2003 with a T1-4, N0-2 M0 head and neck cancer, with parotid gland sparing IMRT or conventional bilateral neck irradiation to a dose of at least 60 Gy, who were progression free and had no disseminated disease (n = 192). Overall response was 85% (n = 163); 97% in the IMRT group (n = 75) and 77% in the control group (n = 88) the median follow-up was 2.6 years. The prevalence of complaints was compared between the two groups, correcting for all relevant factors at multivariate ordinal regression analysis. Patients treated with IMRT reported significantly less difficulty transporting and swallowing their food and needed less water for a dry mouth during day, night and meals. They also experienced fewer problems

In the last few years, several new posterior composites and light curing trends have been introduced that are intended to reduce the number of steps and save time when placing a posterior composite restoration. Bulk curing resin composites are now available that produce less shrinkage stress and can be light cured in up to 5 mm thick increments instead of the customary 2 mm thickness. Also, now that high output LED curing lights are available, this has created an expectation that teeth can be restored using just one large increment of composite in a shorter curing time. However, photo-curing of dental composites is governed by an array of complex interactions such as the light intensity, exposure time, photoinitiator system, initiator/light source spectral overlap, and the collective material optical properties. Consequently, light curing dental materials is not as simple as light on, and light off. This CE webinar will attempt to provide some insights into the complexities of ...
Xerostomia is the medical term for dry mouth. What causes it? Numerous medications, damage to certain nerves in the neck or head caused by injury or radiotherapy, smoking, or problems with your salivary glands due to illnesses such as diabetes and Parkinsons. In addition to being uncomfortable, xerostomia can cause swallowing problems, alter your sense of taste, and promote the development of plaque and tooth decay. Some causes of dry mouth can be directly targeted to eliminate the symptom. In other cases, certain techniques can minimize the problem, such as frequently drinking small sips of water, sucking on ice cubes or sugarless candy, using saliva substitutes, or avoiding factors that can aggravate the condition (eating foods that are too salty, using mouthwash containing alcohol, smoking, etc.). You should also maintain good oral hygiene to prevent tooth decay and gingivitis. For more advice, see your health professional! ...

What causes dry mouth (xerostomia)? The medicine you consume, both over-the-counter and prescription, can cause dry mouth. Dont quit taking your medicine, but talk to your doctor or dentist about dry mouth if it gets a little troublesome for you. Also, smoking is known to cause dry mouth as well, so dont start smoking again. Remember, prevention is always better than a cure.. How do I know if I have Xerostomia? Xerostomia occurs when there is an abnormality in the way the body swallows. This abnormality could be in the way the person swallows; they could experience difficulty in swallowing or their saliva may come out instead of their food or drink. The most common symptom of xerostomia is pain while swallowing, and this pain usually gets worse when the person tries to lie down. When looking at dental caries pictures or when asking patients about their symptoms, xerostomia patients are usually advised to position themselves so that the pain is not directed towards the back of their mouth. This ...
Aim. The aim of this research was to determine the prevalence, natural history, antecedents, associations, and impacts of xerostomia on oral health in a longitudinal cohort of adults in their thirties from the Dunedin Multidisciplinary Health and Development Study (DMHDS) in New Zealand. Methods. The data were collected from 972 Study members at age 32 and 961 Study members at age 38 through face-to-face interviews, self-administered questionnaires, and clinical assessments. Information was analysed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 17.0 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA). Univariate analysis was undertaken to describe the sociodemographic characteristics of the sample followed by bivariate analysis and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) to examine the associations between the dependent variable (xerostomia) and the independent variables. Chi-square tests were used to examine the statistical significance in differences found with a p value of ,0.05 considered ...

Insulin-dependent type-1 diabetes mellitus (DM) and oral diseases are closely interrelated. Poor metabolic control in diabetics is associated with a high risk of gingivitis, periodontitis and tooth loss. Salivary flow declines in diabetics and patients suffer from xerostomia. Reduced saliva predisposes to enamel hypomineralization and caries formation; however, the mechanisms that initiate and lead to progression of tooth decay and periodontitis in type-1 DM have not been explored. To address this issue, we analyzed tooth morphology in Akita-/- mice that harbor a point mutation in the Ins2 insulin gene which leads to insulin deficiency and hyperglycemia. Objective: To characterize the tooth phenotype in Akita-/- mice and determine whether hyperglycemia and hyposalivation contribute to dental defects. Methods: Mandibles from Akita-/- and wild type littermates were analyzed by microCT, scanning EM and histology; teeth were examined for amelogenin and ameloblastin expression. Mice were injected ...

Everybody gets a dry mouth from time to time. Temporary mouth dryness can be brought on by dehydration, stress, or simply the normal reduction in saliva flow at night. But persistent mouth dryness, a condition known as xerostomia, is cause for concern.. Xerostomia occurs when your salivary glands, which normally keep your mouth moist by secreting saliva, are not working properly. A chronic lack of saliva has significant health implications. For one thing, it can be difficult to eat with a dry mouth; tasting, chewing and swallowing may also be affected. This could compromise your nutrition. Also, a dry mouth creates ideal conditions for tooth decay. Thats because saliva plays a very important role in keeping decay-causing oral bacteria in check and neutralizing the acids these bacteria produce; it is the acid in your mouth that erodes tooth enamel and starts the decay process. A dry mouth can also cause bad breath.. ...

Xerostomia is a common condition among elderly. The objectives were to examine prevalence, persistence, progression, yearly incidence of xerostomia, associated background factors and its influence on oral impacts on daily performances (OIDP) in 50- to 80-year-old people. In 1992, a questionnaire was sent to all 50-year-old (n = 8888) and in 2007 to all 75-year-old persons (n = 5195) living in two Swedish counties. In 2012, the same questionnaire was sent to both age cohorts, now 70- and 80-year-old. Response rate was for the 50-, 70- 75- and 80-year-old groups 71.4%, 72.2%, 71.9% and 66.4%, respectively. In the 50- to 70-year-old sample, 40.3% of the participants answered all five examinations and in the 75-80 group 49.5% (intact samples). In all age groups, xerostomia was significantly more prevalent in women than in men. At age 80, often mouth dryness at night was reported by 24.3% and 16.2% of women and men, respectively. Prevalence increased with age and was more frequent at night-time. ...
Dr. Fresh has launched Orazyme Dry Mouth Mouthwash, an all natural, sugar-free rinse formulated with xylitol for the relief of dry mouth.
One product of note that has come onto the market is XyliMelts by OraHealth. XyliMelts is a time-released, moisturizing, oral adhering disk. Unlike other products, the sustained release is effective over a longer period of time. This small disc adheres to either a molar or the gingival tissue opposite the buccal and delivers 500 mg of time-released xylitol over one to two hours during the day, or up to six hours when used while sleeping. Xylitol has been shown to reduce plaque by inhibiting bacterial growth, decrease caries, and stimulate salivary flow. The effects last longer than the flavor of gum or the dissolution of a hard sugar-free candy. Due to its unique adherence to the oral tissues, XyliMelts are the only xerostomia product that may be used during the night. They are perfect for your xerostomia patients, due to their portability and ease of use. They are the over-the-counter treatment of choice for the multitude of our patients who suffer from xerostomia ...
Saliva is one of your bodys natural defenses against plaque because it acts to rinse your mouth of cavity-causing bacteria and other harmful materials. Dry mouth (also called Xerostomia) is a fairly common condition that is caused by diminished saliva production. People with medical conditions, such as an eating disorder or diabetes, are often plagued by dry mouth. Eating foods such as garlic, tobacco use, and some kinds of medications, including treatments such as cancer therapy can diminish the bodys production of saliva, leading to dry mouth. Other causes are related to aging (including rheumatoid arthritis), and compromised immune systems ...

Studies conducted on outpatients and in the general population show that xerostomia affects about 1 in 4 people.8 Salivary flow rate patterns demonstrate both daily and seasonal variation, with peaks in mid-afternoon and higher flow rates in the winter than in the summer. During sleep, saliva flow rate is minimal.9 People who complain of dry mouth do not necessarily have a very low flow rate; conversely, those with a low unstimulated flow rate do not always complain of dry mouth. It is therefore of greater significance to establish Whether or not the flow rate has changed adversely in a particular individual.10 ...

It is typically brought on by salivary glands in your mouth that are not functioning as they should, and in turn, there will be a noticeable reduction in salivary flow. Having a dry mouth can affect the way you speak, taste, chew, and swallow. Treatment options are available to relieve discomfort and prevent complications that are associated with xerostomia.. ...
In 1995, I was diagnosed with throat cancer and had to have radiation therapy. I lost my saliva glands and sense of taste. As a result of this, I suffer from extreme dry mouth. Over the years, my oncologist gave me many different kinds of products to relieve my dry mouth symptoms, but nothing helped. Due to the lack of saliva in my mouth, I had many cavities and had to have my upper teeth extracted and get dentures and then I had to get a bridge for my lower teeth! So, in addition to suffering from dry mouth, my mouth is very sore. Just recently, I was given a tube of GC Dry Mouth Gel from my dentist and it has been such a relief to me. It lasts a long time - if I have to get up in the middle of the night, I just run my tongue around my mouth and GC Dry Mouth Gel is still working. I wish this product was available back in 1995! ...

Maintenance of dental hygiene is very essential for elderly people, as many simple factors affect their dental health. One of the common issues seen in the elderly is dry mouth. A dry mouth is a condition with decreased amount of saliva in the mouth.. People suffering from dry mouth often show certain symptoms like thirst, bad breath, difficulty in speaking and chapped lips. Saliva in such individuals seems to be thick and stingy. The tongue appears dry and is often irritating and scratchy. There is even a dry hoarseness in throat. Inability to chew, swallow or taste the food, dry nasal passages and painful sores in mouth and tongue are some other symptoms of dry mouth in the elderly.. Elderly people are more often associated with certain medications. However, many medications have side effects on their dental health. Therapeutic treatment for head and neck cancers can include radiation. Damage to the salivary glands with the radiation may reduce or stop the production of saliva. Even with age, ...

Primary Sjögrens Syndrome (PSS) mainly affects women (9:1 female:male ratio) and is one of the commonest autoimmune diseases with a prevalence of 0.1 - 0.6% of adult women. For patients with PSS there is currently no effective therapy that can alter the progression of the disease. The aim of the TRACTISS study is to establish whether in patients with PSS, treatment with rituximab improves clinical outcomes. TRACTISS is a UK multi-centre, double-blind, randomised, controlled, parallel group trial of 110 patients with PSS. Patients will be randomised on a 1:1 basis to receive two courses of either rituximab or placebo infusion in addition to standard therapy, and will be followed up for up to 48 weeks. The primary objective is to assess the extent to which rituximab improves symptoms of fatigue and oral dryness. Secondary outcomes include ocular dryness, salivary flow rates, lacrimal flow, patient quality of life, measures of disease damage and disease activity, serological and peripheral blood

Background: Linear Accelerator-based Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), either as step-and shoot (SS) or in dynamic mode, is now considered routine in the definitive management of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Helical TomoTherapy (HT) is a new platform to deliver IMRT. This study aims to compare step-and-shoot Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (SS IMRT) with dynamic Helical TomoTherapy (HT) dosimetrically in patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Materials and Methods: Twelve patients with HNSCC, previously treated with SS IMRT, were re-planned on HT using the same CT dataset. Plans were compared for target coverage and organs-at-risk (OARs) sparing. Sparing of parotids was assessed after stratifying for side (contralateral vs. ipsilateral) and site of disease (laryngopharynx vs. oropharynx). Normal tissue complication probabilities (NTCP) were also compared for the parotid glands. Results: All HT plans showed improvement in target coverage ...
Sjögrens syndrome (SS) is an autoimmune disease in which exocrine tissues are affected by cellular and humoral immunity. As a result, the salivary and lacrimal glands of patients with SS are damaged, leading to xerostomia (dry mouth) and keratoconjunctivitis sicca (dry eyes). Because experimental approaches to investigate SS pathogenesis in human patients are limited, development of a mouse model is indispensable for understanding the disease. In this study, we show that special AT-rich sequence binding protein-1 conditional knockout (SATB1cKO) mice, in which the SATB1 gene is specifically deleted from hematopoietic cells, develop SS by 4 wk of age, soon after weaning ...
OBJECTIVES: To determine associations between symptoms of dry eyes and dry mouth and objective evidence of lacrimal and salivary gland dysfunction in a population based sample. To determine associations between these elements and the presence of autoantibodies. METHODS: A cross sectional population based survey. Subjects were interviewed and examined (Schirmer-1 test and unstimulated salivary flow) for the presence of dry eyes and mouth. Antibodies (anti-Ro [SS-A], anti-La [SS-B], rheumatoid factor, antinuclear antibody) were measured. RESULTS: 341 subjects were examined. Twenty four per cent had dry eye symptoms, 29% dry mouth symptoms, and 14% both. There was only a weak association between the presence of oral or ocular symptoms and their respective test results. Associations were strongest between dry mouth symptoms and positive test results, and in subjects under 55 years of age. There was no association between the presence of autoantibodies and either symptoms or signs of dry eyes or dry mouth.

What Causes Dry Mouth?. Dry mouth has numerous causes, including smoking, drinking, dehydration, aging, and sometimes the salivary glands can be damaged by chemotherapy or radiation treatment. However, the most common cause is ordinary medication. In fact, over 400 medications include dry mouth on their lists of side effects! If you have been suffering medication-related dry mouth, please talk to us about palliative treatment options.. Good Habits To Prevent Or Reduce Dry Mouth. For particularly severe dry mouth, artificial saliva could provide relief and protect your teeth from decay, but there are also a few good habits that can minimize the problem.. Nose Breathing. Avoid breathing through your mouth, whether you are awake or asleep. Even for people with fully functioning salivary glands, mouth breathing can result in a much dryer mouth than nose breathing. For that, and many other health reasons, it is important to breathe through your nose whenever possible, especially during sleep.. Stay ...

Radiation damage to salivary glands frequently leads to irreversible dysfunction by poorly understood mechanisms. The P2X7 receptor (P2X7R) is a ligand-gated ion channel activated by extracellular ATP released from damaged cells as danger signals. P2X7R activation initiates apoptosis and is involved in numerous inflammatory disorders. In this study, we utilized P2X7R knockout (P2X7R-/-) mice to ...

ADHESIVE COMPOSITIONS FOR THE TREATMENT OF XEROSTOMIA - Compositions and methods for the treatment of xerostomia are disclosed herein. Methods for making the compositions are also disclosed herein. The compositions are designed for individuals having the physiologic ability to salivate but who do not salivate in sufficient quantity to satisfy their personal comfort level of oral hydration. The compositions are typically in the form of a film or tablet, preferably in the form of a sticker tablet, most preferably in the form of a double layer sticker tablet, where one layer contains a bioadhesive material and the second layer contains the sialogogic agent and the one or more lipids. The compositions adhere to a buccal surface or mucosal surface in the oral cavity for at least 15 minutes, preferably for at least 30 minutes. The compositions contain a therapeutically effective amount of one or more sialogogic agents and one or more lipids for treating xerostomia and a pharmaceutically acceptable ...
Current evidence on the therapeutic management of primary-2002 SjS patients is based on 9 RCTs (only four including ≥100 patients randomised to drug/PLA), 18 prospective cohort studies (all including ≤30 patients per study) and 5 case-control studies.. For oral topical therapies, available evidence is limited to five studies carried out in SjS patients (only one in primary-2002 patients) and one Cochrane SLR that assessed the management of dry mouth. Xerostomia is a subjective symptom with wide interindividual variation, and a satisfactory output of unstimulated whole saliva in one patient may lead another to complain of symptoms of dry mouth. All studies have shown significant within-group improvement in comparison with baseline subjective oral outcomes. Mechanical stimulation (chewing gum) was associated with increased saliva production in patients with residual capacity, but there is no evidence that gum may have more or less efficacy than saliva substitutes in reducing dry mouth ...
The main role of salivary glands (SG) is the production and secretion of saliva, in which aquaporins (AQPs) play a key role by ensuring water flow. The AQPs are transmembrane channel proteins permeable to water to allow water transport across cell membranes according to osmotic gradient. This review gives an insight into SG AQPs. Indeed, it gives a summary of the expression and localization of AQPs in adult human, rat and mouse SG, as well as of their physiological role in SG function. Furthermore, the review provides a comprehensive view of the involvement of AQPs in pathological conditions affecting SG, including Sjögren’s syndrome, diabetes, agedness, head and neck cancer radiotherapy and SG cancer. These conditions are characterized by salivary hypofunction resulting in xerostomia. A specific focus is given on current and future therapeutic strategies aiming at AQPs to treat xerostomia. A deeper understanding of the AQPs involvement in molecular mechanisms of saliva secretion and diseases
Chronic dry mouth, especially dry mouth at night, causes gum disease and cavities. Heres why you should see your dentist for a xerostomia solution.
As others mentioned too much water can be dangerous -- best to balance it with some electrolytes. Also, too much water too quickly (or other liquids) can wash away the mucous coating on your tongue, making you feel worse. Its important to differentiate between a purely dry mouth and other symptoms of dehydration (e.g., dark urine, lightheaded, headache, etc.). If its true dehydration, treat that since that can cause trouble. If you have dry mouth without other symptoms of dehydration, supplement your liquid intake with an OTC product to treat dry mouth (Biotene makes both a spray and an ointment, which I find helpful when I get a dry mouth). As odd as it sounds, i also find that eating something will help with dry mouth symptoms (my best guess is that because food increase salvation, it helps ease the symptoms).. Hope you get through your flare quickly.. Melissa. ...

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. While you may see many people sporting pink bracelets, clothes, or even hairstyles, we have chosen to raise awareness by writing about the connection between oral health and breast cancer.. More than 200,000 women are in the U.S. are diagnosed with breast cancer every year. With a breast cancer diagnosis comes a great amount of health challenges, including issues with oral health. Many breast cancer patients are at risk for dental caries, pain, and xerostomia. These conditions can seriously affect oral health.. Xerostomia is a form of dry mouth that can cause serious decay to teeth. We all need saliva in our mouth because it helps to wash away bacteria that will become acid and erode enamel. Suffering from dry mouth allows the bacteria, acid, and plaque on teeth to cause decay much more quickly and severely. This makes it much easier for cavities to form.. Chemotherapy is the main cause for most oral health issues during cancer treatment. The drugs used ...
Patients who have received radiotherapy for head and neck cancer often suffer from the unpleasant and distressing side-effect of a dry mouth, caused by damage to their salivary glands from the radiation. I had which sounds like the same thing.. They finely figured out it was Sjögrens syndrome. Which this is a sister to lupus. Do you have dry eyes and dry mouth? Go to a Rheumatologist.Sjögrens (SHOW-grens) syndrome is an autoimmune disease - that is, a disease in which the immune system turns against the bodys own cells. Normally, the immune system works to protect us from disease by destroying harmful invading organisms like viruses and bacteria. In the case of Sjögrens syndrome, disease-fighting cells attack various organs, most notably the glands that produce tears and saliva (the lacrimal and salivary glands). Damage to these glands causes a reduction in both the quantity and quality of their secretions. This results in symptoms that include dry eyes and dry mouth. In technical terms, the form of eye dryness associated with Sjögrens syndrome is called keratoconjunctivitis sicca, or KCS, and the symptoms of dry mouth are called xerostomia. Your doctor may use these terms when talking ...

Objective. To evaluate current evidence on the efficacy and safety of topical and systemic medications in patients with primary Sjögren syndrome (SjS) to inform European League Against Rheumatism treatment recommendations.. Methods. The MEDLINE, EMBASE and Cochrane databases were searched for case-control/prospective cohort studies, randomised controlled trials (RCTs) and systematic reviews.. Results. Current evidence in primary SjS patients fulfilling the 2002 criteria is based on the data from 9 RCTs, 18 prospective cohort studies and 5 case-control studies. Two Cochrane systematic literature reviews (SLRs) have reported that topical treatments for dry mouth and dry eye are safe and effective. Ocular cyclosporine A was safe and effective in two RCTs including 1039 patients with dry eye syndrome. Two Cochrane SLRs on serum tear drops and plugs showed inconsistency in possible benefits, both for symptoms and objective measures. Five RCTs reported significant improvements in oral dryness and ...
When you think of oral care, you may think of preventing problems such as bad breath, gum disease, dry mouth, cavities, and other common oral health issues. While these are all very important, you must also understand the effect that your oral health has on your overall well-being.. In the mouth, saliva contains many compounds that are important to oral health and disease prevention. One group of compounds found in saliva is antioxidants. A review of university-based research reveals multiple publications over the past decade that all show low levels of salivary antioxidants, and low TAC (total antioxidant capacity) in many oral diseases, including xerostomia (dry mouth), periodontitis, TMJ, and even oral cancer.. For years, studies have shown that inflammation from gum disease can lead to cardiovascular disease, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, and other illnesses. Recently, poor gum health has actually been linked to pregnancy complications and premature birth.. It is a serious problem, and ...

Hi Michel T, You mention excessive oxygenation of the upper layers of skin in EC patients. I am wondering what you think of my hypothesis that there is a link between EC and xerostomia. My EC has been Horrendous. Over the last week, I have seen 80% improvement by applying saliva gel to my labial mucosa (constantly throughout the day, whenever I felt it wear off, so as constant as Aquaphor). Here is my post from another thread which explains my thinking. There are various different causes and levels of severity of dry mouth. If you have dry mouth from simple dehydratio ...

Saliva plays a key role in maintaining your oral health. It regulates your mouths pH levels, and it deposits important minerals on your teeth to protect your enamel. Furthermore, saliva controls the level and activity of bacteria in your mouth. And it provides lubrication, so the friction between your teeth and soft tissues wont cause painful sores.. Unfortunately, many individuals suffering from diabetes also experience dry mouth, or xerostomia. This condition occurs when the salivary glands cannot release enough saliva to fight bacteria or protect the mouth. In addition to causing a dry, rough feeling in the mouth and cracked lips, this condition can increase the likelihood of experiencing tooth decay and gum disease.. ...
