The recognition of small features of low contrast in the image recorded by an x-ray image intensifier is usually limited by photon noise. This detail-contrast perceptibility is dependent on the detective quantum efficiency (DQE) and the modulation transfer function of the imaging tube and associated scanning system. The DQE can be calculated for all input photon energies from the statistical behaviour of each stage of photon detection and amplification where quanta are lost or converted. The potential improvement to be obtained from any proposed design change can be estimated. The escape of characteristic photons from the input phosphor layer causes significant change to the performance particularly when gadolinium oxysulphide is employed for that purpose ...

X-Ray Detectors are basically those instruments that are employed to gauge the flux, spatial distribution, spectrum, and the other related characteristics of X-Rays. They can be segregated into two major types imaging detectors and dose measurement devices. The analog X-Ray systems normally employ photographic plates and films for image detection. Nevertheless, as there has been a shift in technology from analog to digital X-ray systems, the photographic plates and films are have been substituted by digital image plates that are itself the flat panel detectors.. Flat panel detectors are said to be highly sensitive and they are much faster than a photographic film. As technology and demand for digital X-Ray systems is reaching great heights, the X-ray detectors will call for much stronger structure possessing high transmission capability, temperature endurance, as well as resistance to ionizing radiations. Market size on the basis of type spans flat panel detectors, charge coupled device (CCD) ...

Of course, this genre can be used within the Genre Options game; however, this is a difficult game, and even many experienced improvisors cant play it well. A better strategy is to perform a complete detective scene. You might ask the audience for a title (The Big [blank]), and then perform that title in the detective genre. This allows you to concentrate on this genre, rather than trying to practice the many genres required for Genre Options.. The constant first-person narration usually found in the detective mystery (I went inside. I didnt like what I saw . . . etc.) makes it ideal for Typewriter Scenes, where the player on the microphone provides the detectives narration, and another player plays the on-stage detective. (If you are doing a detective scene without an off-stage narrator, the improvisor playing the detective should frequently switch to narrator mode, delivering narrative directly to the audience.). Something that is rarely seen on stage, but which should work well is to use ...
Polycrystalline materials are widely used in large area electronic devices such as flat panel x-ray image detectors, and solar cells due to their suitability to deposit over large area at low cost. The performance of polycrystalline-based flat panel detectors are showing encouraging results (good sensitivity, good resolution and acceptable dark current) and give possibility to replace existing x-ray film/screen cassette. Therefore large area polycrystalline based flat panel detectors have opened new clinical possibilities and the polycrystalline solar cells give the opportunity of manufacturing low cost photovoltaic cells. Consequently, active research has been carried out to find out suitable polycrystalline materials (e.g. HgI2, CdTe, CdZnTe, PbI2, PbO etc) for various large area applications. However a polycrystalline material is composed of micro crystallites joined together by grain boundaries (complex structure, consisting of a few atomic layers of disordered atoms) which posses trap ...
Section meets COAS Arts & Humanities requirement Class Meets: MWF 11:15-12:05 BH208 Edgar Allan Poe not only wrote some of our finest tales of terror, but also practically invented the genre of analytic detective fiction. His literary career suggests that these two literary forms are in some way connected, and that what links them is a fascination with or before the unknown. By examining the ways in which various writers of detective and horror fiction manipulate their readers (as well as the reader s role in the creation of such texts), we will investigate the connection between mystery and horror. We will ask ourselves: Why do we like to be frightened, at least in literature? What purpose does a detective serve for his or her author and reader? What are the similarities between the criminals of detective fiction (and its detectives!) and the monsters of horror fiction? We will focus on texts in which horror and mystery are combined and consider the detective figures and writing strategies of ...
MiniCAT, a flat-panel-display-based (FPD) imaging system, yields head and neck images that are superior to those from much larger and bulkier computed tomography (CT) scanners. This is the conclusion of a scientific study that includes Web Stayman of Xoran Technologies, Inc. ([email protected]), the Ann Arbor, MI-based company that makes the MiniCAT scanner. Using MiniCAT may provide additional advantages to the patient and physician, as its designed specifically to deliver low radiation doses to the head and neck. Whereas CT scans usually require a trip to a different facility or department, MiniCATs one-square-meter footprint enables it to be installed at the point-of-care, which includes installation within a specific department at a hospital, a surgical or imaging center, or a doctors office.. Central to the MiniCAT design is a flat-panel x-ray detector, based on the same kind of technology as flat-panel monitors for computers except they detect (x-ray) photons rather than give off ...
The goal of computed radiography (CR) acceptance testing is to establish the storage phosphor reader and phosphor screen baseline performance. Quality control testing then detects changes in the CR system that could affect radiographic image quality. These tests currently require multiple exposures that are laser printed on film, and evaluated subjectively and using optical density measurements. Soft copy digital images have rarely been used to characterize CR systems. This paper presents an automated test target for the acceptance and quality control testing of Kodak storage phosphor readers. By using digital images for testing, the CR system can be evaluated independent of laser printer, film, and film processing effects ...
An object of the invention is to provide an electrophotographic photoconductor featuring uniform chargeability to a predetermined potential, low residual potential and excellent stability in the operating environment and repeated use thereof, as well as a method of producing the same. An undercoat layer between a substrate and a photosensitive layer is formed by the use of a coating fluid for undercoat layer containing a coupling agent having an unsaturated bond, a metal oxide, a binder and a mixture solvent. The coupling agent increases affinity of the metal oxide for the binder so that the coating fluid does not suffer the aggregation of the metal oxide or gelation thereof, presenting homogeneity and excellent can-stability. Thus is obtained a uniform undercoat layer. A photoconductor having this undercoat layer is adapted to be uniformly charged to a predetermined potential and to suppress the rise of residual potential and particularly the rise of residual potential due to a use thereof under low

Detectives at Devon and Cornwall Police are suffering from burnout as they face growing workloads that they feel they will never be able to get on top of. This is according to Devon and Cornwall Police Federations Detective Lead Suzanne Vranch (pictured) who has been working with the force to improve the role for investigators. Suzanne said: The main reason we cant retain detectives is largely down to the demand. The volume of workloads is way above what it used to be. Detectives can have between 10 and 20 cases actively being investigated and others going through the court process. One of the big things that worries officers is that they never feel that theyre getting on top of the workload and theyre doing a disservice to victims because they want to put time, passion and skills into it, but they are being prevented from doing so.. And because of staff shortages and the additional demand we face, the knock-on effect is officers working extended hours. Overtime becomes the norm, ...

For an EBSD measurement a flat/polished crystalline specimen is placed in the SEM chamber at a highly tilted angle (~70° from horizontal) towards the diffraction camera, to increase the contrast in the resultant electron backscatter diffraction pattern. The phosphor screen is located within the specimen chamber of the SEM at an angle off approximately 90° to the pole piece and is coupled to a compact lens which focuses the image from the phosphor screen onto the CCD camera. In this configuration, some of the electrons which enter the sample backscatter and may escape. As these electrons leave the sample, they may exit at the Bragg condition related to the spacing of the periodic atomic lattice planes of the crystalline structure and diffract. These diffracted electrons can escape the material and some will collide and excite the phosphor causing it to fluoresce. Inside the SEM, the electron beam is focussed onto the surface of a crystalline sample. The electrons enter the sample and some may ...

A phosphor based on a phosphate host matrix, RbSrPO4:Eu2+ (RSP), was synthesized by a conventional solid-state reaction, and the crystal structure of the RSP host material was investigated by Rietveld refinement. The RSP phosphor could be excited efficiently by light in the 220-430 nm UV/Vis range and exhibited a highly intense emission peak at 450 nm. We discovered the effect of the activated Eu2+ concentration and the concentration quenching mechanism. Also, light absorption and quantum efficiency of the RSP phosphor were measured when excited in the near-UV region. Finally, the effect of temperature on the photoluminescence emission intensity of the RSP phosphor and its thermal activation energy were investigated. All of these characteristics indicate that this phosphor has potential for use in near-UV-based white LEDs. ...
Analog X-ray systems, which had major share in the market until 2005, are being replaced by advanced technologies such as computed radiography (CR) and digital radiography (DR). Advantages such as low dosage, better image quality, enhanced image storage, and immediate image analysis have made the latter more attractive over conventional analog systems. The availability of image detectors technologies like CCD, CMOS and flat panel detectors are being used to retrofit and convert the old existing analog X-ray units into CR and DR systems; this is driving the up-gradation of analog systems into digital.. Hospital and diagnostic centers are continuously adapting to the change in technology to provide better services for their patients. Concerns over excess radiation exposure, poor image quality, time required, and requirement of large space has forced many to adopt and upgrade into digital X-ray systems. Advancement and adoption of digital image processing software and picture archiving and ...
(Sr, Ca, Ba)Al2O4:Eu2+, Dy3+ phosphors were prepared via a high temperature solid-state reaction method. The correlation of phase structure, optical properties and lifetimes of the phosphors are investigated in this work. For the (Sr, Ca)Al2O4:Eu2+,Dy3+ phosphors, the different phase formation from monoclinic SrAl2O4 phase to hexagonal SrAl2O4 phase to monoclinic CaAl2O4 phase was observed when the Ca content increased. The emission color of SrAl2O4:Eu2+, Dy3+ phosphors varied from green to blue. For the (Sr, Ba)Al2O4:Eu2+, Dy3+ phosphors, different phase formation from the monoclinic SrAl2O4 phase to the hexagonal BaAl2O4 phase was observed, along with a shift of emission wavelength from 520 nm to 500 nm. More interestingly, the decay time of SrAl2O4:Eu2+, Dy3+changed due to the different phase formations. Lifetime can be dramatically shortened by the substitution of Sr2+ with Ba2+ cations, resulting in improving the performance of the alternating current light emitting diode (AC-LED). Finally, intense

Linda Mizejewski, in Hardboiled & High Heeled, provides a general overview of the woman detective across three different media: the novel, television, and film. Such a general analysis is long overdue, and she constructs a clearly written book that is organized into these three preceding sections and seven detailed chapters.. The first two chapters introduce us to the importance of a group of female-centered detective novels that have been written since the [End Page 239] 1980s. In chapter 1, Mizejewski analyzes both the subject matter of womens detective fiction and, by means of the subtitle Fans and Fantasies, introduces the dominant theoretical stance of her book, admitting that she is both a critic and an admirer of these novels. In order to maintain a fans bearing, Mizejewski buries most of her academic research within footnotes listed at the back of the book although she has clearly done her homework and there are fifteen pages worth of single-spaced notes to prove it. Her books ...

Active Region. To operate Bipolar Junction Transistor as an Amplifier we have to make input Base-Emitter junction of BJT in forward bias and output junction Base-Collector junction to reverse bias.. How is the Amplification happening in the BJT Transistor?. In case of NPN transistor:. Given figure shows the NPN transistor with forward bias to Base-Emitter junction and reverse bias to Base-Collector junction.. Due to the forward bias at Base-Emitter junction electrons in the N-type emitter starts to flow towards the base terminal and hence this constitutes the emitter current IE. As the base is P-type and the electrons, they tend to combine with holes. As the base terminal is less doped and very thin, therefore, only a very few electrons (less than 4%) combine with holes to constitute base current IB.. The remainder (more than 96%) electrons cross over into the collector-region to constitute collector current IC. In this way, it is observed that almost the entire emitter current flows in the ...

A diagnostic X-ray system has an X-ray source that generates an X-ray conical beam, and a panel detector, which has numerous X-ray detection elements arrayed two-dimensionally, opposed to each other so that they can be rotated about the body axis of a subject. CT images of the subject are reconstructed based on projection data acquired by scanning the subject. The panel detector can be offset so that the center of the detecting surface of the panel detector extending in a direction perpendicular to the body axis can be displaced in a direction substantially perpendicular to a reference plane defined with an extension of a straight line linking the focal point of X-rays and a point on the body axis of the subject and with the body axis of the subject.

In this paper, we report the influence of the structural properties of amorphous silicon (a-Si) on its subsequent crystallization behavior via the aluminum induced crystallization (AIC) method. Two distinct a-Si deposition techniques, electron beam evaporation and plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD), are compared for their effect on the overall AIC kinetics as well as the properties of the final poly-crystalline (poly-Si) silicon film. Raman and FTIR spectroscopy results indicate that the PECVD grown a-Si films has higher intermediate-range order, which is enhanced for increased hydrogen dilution during deposition. With increasing intermediate-range order of the a-Si, the rate of AIC is diminished, leading larger poly-Si grain size. ...
The absolute efficiency of a phosphor screen is the ratio of the light energy per unit area at the screen surface to the incident x-ray energy fluence. Particle size is a critical factor in determining the absolute efficiency, but in most models its influence is not accounted for. To allow derivation of the particle size dependence, a model is proposed that describes the optical properties of the screen by means of a single parameter, the light extinction factor, xi, and assumes that the intrinsic efficiency (light energy/energy imparted to the phosphor material) is independent of particle size. The value of xi depends on the type of screen (phosphor, reflective backing, coating and binder) and has to be determined from measurements on at least two screens with known particle size and thickness. The absolute efficiency can then be calculated for an extended range of particle sizes and/or screen thicknesses. To test the model, experimental data from the literature were used to derive values of xi ...

This paper describes and discusses new experimental investigations of the excitation, absorption and emission spectra, phosphorescent decay curve characteristics, thermoluminescence and photoconductivity of potassium chloride phosphors activated by thallium and of the thermoluminescence of potassium chloride phosphors activated by barium, by strontium or by thermal or mechanical strains. It is concluded that for concentrations of more than about 0·001 mol. Tl the KCl:TlCl phosphors contain a number of different centres. Reasons are given for suggesting that some of these may be: (1) Tl+ ions at substitutional sites and not near to other Tl+ ions at neighbouring positive ion sites, (2) TlCln complexes at special sites near defects or along dislocations, (3) lattice distortions produced by the incorporation of Tl+ or other foreign ions. Since the main emission peaks appearing in the thermoluminescence of KCl: Tl at 200 and 300 °K also occur in the KCl phosphors activated by barium, by strontium ...
Detective fiction has remained remarkably resilient and pliable - modern masters of the genre include Tony Hillerman, with his spectacular use of the setting and culture of Native American tribal life in the Southwest. Carl Hiassens comic mysteries take advantage of their Florida setting. Sometimes detective fiction follows the form of classic murder mystery, and sometimes it doesnt - like all great genres, its pliable. In detective fiction there is usually an independent investigator of some kind, often a professional, but he or she could be an amateur, or a member of a police force. The key here is that the detective is working more or less on his own. In that sense, the Conan Doyle stories qualify as detective fiction, for example - though Holmes often works with the London police, he is very much out investigating on his own ...
Important design features of flat panel image receptors include the pixel size and the fill factor. Pixel size affects spatial resolution and sizes of the order of about 100-200 μm are typical. The fill factor is the percentage of a pixel area which is sensitive to the image signal - be it electric charge or light photons. It can never be 100%, given the need to accommodate conductors (~10 μm wide) which input switching signals and which output image signals, as well as the thin film transistor in each pixel. Typical fill factors are in the range 50-80%.. Flat-panel detectors generally use active matrices of hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H+) as readout arrays. This is the technology developed for laptop displays which makes it possible to manufacture large-area X-ray imagers with high radiation tolerance. The amorphous silicon layer is formed on a glass substrate, for instance, by plasma-enhanced deposition of silane (SiH4) gas. The disordered structure of the amorphous layer has the ...

We report on the absolute calibration of a micro channel plate (MCP) detector, installed as detector in a Thomson parabola spectrometer. The calibration delivers the relation between a registered count numbers in the CCD camera (on which the MCP phosphor screen is imaged) as a result of the impact of an ion beam onto the MCP. The particle response of the whole detection system was evaluated by using laser accelerated ions with proton energies up to 3 MeV and carbon ion energies up to 16 MeV. In order to obtain an absolute measurement of the number of ions incident on the MCP detector, slotted CR-39 track detector was installed in front of the MCP. The signal registered on the MCP due to ions propagating through the CR-39 slots is compared to the number of particles counted on the adjacent CR-39 stripes after the etching. The calibration of the response of MCP has been extended to higher energy ions and protons on the basis of a simple model validated by comparison with the calibration data. This ...

This paper reviews the state of phosphor thermometry, focusing on developments in the past 15 years. The fundamental principles and theory are presented, and the various spectral and temporal modes, including the lifetime decay, rise time and intensity ratio, are discussed. The entire phosphor measurement system, including relative advantages to conventional methods, choice of phosphors, bonding techniques, excitation sources and emission detection, is reviewed. Special attention is given to issues that may arise at high temperatures. A number of recent developments and applications are surveyed, with examples including: measurements in engines, hypersonic wind tunnel experiments, pyrolysis studies and droplet/spray/gas temperature determination. They show the technique is flexible and successful in measuring temperatures where conventional methods may prove to be unsuitable.
In this re-imagined film version (set in 1943 Calcutta), there is just too much happening in a hurry but the story moves forward very slowly. Which is frustrating as director Dibakar Banerjee contemporary masterful take of this famous fictional detective is brilliant but is not satisfying. It lacks the thrill of a murder mystery. I wish Sushant Singh Rajput was better in carrying this kind of film. In fact, Anand Tiwari was better than him and also Meiyang Chang, the Indian Idol fame, was surprising good. The final highly stylistic gore was like a stand alone pay-off piece. The cinematography (Nikos Andritsakis), production design and background score (mixes rap, thrash metal, gypsy ballads and thumping swing) were a cinematic pleasure ...

PODCAST EPISODE 55: Brenna Quinlan, permaculture illustrator, co-author of the Bee Detectives, Melliodora, Victoria, Australia. I like art that is joyful. Playful. Often childlike. The kind of work where the artists hand lightly brings people, objects, animals and places to life in a way that seems completely effortless. I like colour, too. The kind of combining of colour that sparks energy, vivacity, and shows a certain sensitivity shared between the artist and the world. Artists, in my experience, have a way of connecting with the world that is unique. They build a relationship with it, speak with it, and through those intimate conversations, they make new representations of how it feels to be alive and in connection with other humans and the planet. It seems big, and it is! We need more people that take the time to envision the times in which we are living with a new sense of positivity-to make pictures of a bright future so we can make that vision happen. For that reason, I am thrilled to ...
