This report is a review of the Nordic countries systems regarding fatal occupational accidents, i.e. the reporting process, the investigation process, the registration process, the registries, and the legal statutes. The report shows that during the time period 2003-2008 the total number of fatal occupational accidents in the Nordic countries was 1243, i.e. between 1.51 to 2.49 fatal occupational accidents per 100,000 workers per year varying between countries. The report also shows that more than 93 % of these fatal accidents involved males, which reflects the predominance of men in the most dangerous branches, i.e. agriculture, construction, transport, and communication. The report concludes that in order to make data on occupational accidents more comparable among the Nordic countries and improve our common ability to identify prevention strategies, a closer collaboration in the field of occupational accident investigation and registration is needed.. ...

However, despite the fact that the process can be a time consuming one it is never a good idea to settle a whiplash injury compensation claim directly with an insurer as people could be left out of pocket in the long run.. Recently, the Liverpool Daily Post reported that insurance companies are increasingly contacting accident victims in order to try and settle things like a whiplash injury compensation claim as swiftly as possible.. In some cases, they will look to settle a whiplash injury compensation claim within hours of the accident.. However, although it may seem tempting to get the money as quickly as possible, settling a whiplash injury compensation claim in this manner may leave people out of pocket in the long run.. The newspaper highlighted the case of one woman who accepted an offer from an insurance company over the phone, but after a firm of solicitors intervened she was later awarded 15 times more than she had originally agreed to, so clearly it pays to get proper legal advice ...

WASHINGTON - February 11, 2008 - National Education Association President Reg Weaver discussed the role of labor unions in the development of the civil rights movement in a speech today before government workers. Weaver delivered the keynote speech to approximately 350 attendees at the American Federation of Government Employees' (AFGE) Women's and Fair Practices Departments' 2008 Civil Rights Luncheon. "The labor movement has fought for fair wages, fair treatment in the workplace, and a fair chance to get ahead," said Weaver. "The labor movement has been a force for fairness in every aspect of American life - including the civil rights movement.". In his speech, Weaver recalled the efforts of Black civil rights leader A. Philip Randolph to organize sleeping car porters on passenger trains. Randolph recognized that the labor movement represented "the great masses of workers," and therefore has "the moral responsibility for its commitment to the principle of civil rights." Randolph went on to ...

Historically, organized labor in Bolivia had been one of the most politically active and powerful in Latin America. Owing to the importance of mining in the economy, the Trade Union Federation of Bolivian Mineworkers (Federac on Sindical de Trabajadores Mineros de Bolivia -- FSTMB) has been the backbone of organized labor since the mid-1940s. Before the 1952 Revolution, the FSTMB orchestrated opposition to the three dominant tin barons and led protests against worker massacres. During the first few days of the revolution, the MNR founded the COB in order to group the FSTMB and the other labor unions under an umbrella organization that would be subordinate to the party. In creating the COB, the MNR was following the example of Mexico's PRI, which effectvely controlled labor through the party's structures. In Bolivia the COB and especially the FSTMB, which controlled labor in the nationalized mining sector, pushed for worker comanagement and cogovernment. Moreover, worker militias were allowed to ...

In this fixed cohort of automotive manufacturing workers, the prevalence of upper extremity musculoskeletal disorders was similar at follow up to that found in the baseline survey of the same population. MSD cases were defined both on the basis of symptoms uniquely and also by the combination of symptoms plus physical examination findings. Although disorders by symptoms alone were slightly more frequent than disorders confirmed by physical examination, the two case types had quite similar risk factors. The cumulative incidence of new disorders was strongly associated with previously assessed level of exposure to combined ergonomic stressors affecting the upper extremity. Nearly 60% of subjects who had disorders at baseline were still (or again) cases in the second survey. We did not identify consistent predictors of persistence.. The incidence results generally confirmed our previous cross sectional findings. "Length biased sampling" means that a cross sectional study necessarily identifies ...

Vibration White Finger or VWF is caused by the vibrations from power tools such as drills, chainsaws or hammers. Using such tools is common practice in many construction and industry working environments.. If you are suffering from vibration white finger as a result of your work, you may be entitled to compensation.. Vibration white finger can result in horrible symptoms, including constant pain in that hands which hugely reduce your quality of life, and it can stop you working for good in the job that you love. If you're worried about the financial implications of vibration white finger, you shouldn't hesitate to make a vibration white finger claim for compensation.. Your employer has a duty to protect you from injuries such as VWF and should have trained you accordingly to make you aware of the dangers and threats that are posed in these situations. If they have failed to do so, then they become liable for compensation claims against them.. If you have not been protected from VWF then Contact ...
Since the original establishment of the ILO List of Occupational Diseases in 1925 (C18) with 3 occupational diseases [13], the list has played a key role in harmonizing the development of policies on occupational diseases and in promoting their prevention at the international level. The ILO List of Occupational Diseases has been updated continually, reflecting changes in the structure of modern industry and the scientific advancement of occupational medicine. In addition, as an agreement of the tripartite meetings and approved results of the International Labour Conference, the ILO list of occupational disease should have been in the common territory of workers, employers, and governments. Until C121 was revised in 1980, the ILO List of Occupational Diseases had been an appended schedule for a workers' compensation scheme, in which the included items were limited. Since R194, the ILO List has changed to a focus on prevention, recording, and reporting of occupational diseases by expanding its ...

Work-related musculoskeletal disorders that result in days away from work most commonly involve the back alone. In 2016, musculoskeletal disorders involving the back accounted for 38.5 percent of all work-related musculoskeletal disorders (134,550 back cases out of 349,050 total cases).
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effectiveness of the United States Commercial Fishing Industry Vessel Safety Act of 1988 in reducing the high occupational death rate (200/100,000/year in 1991-2) among Alaska's commercial fishermen. METHODS: Comprehensive surveillance of deaths in commercial fishing was established by our office during 1991 and 1992 for Alaska. Demographic data and data on risk factors and incidents were compiled and analysed for trend. RESULTS: During 1991-8, there was a significant (p , 0.001) decrease in deaths in Alaska related to commercial fishing. Although drownings from fishermen falling overboard and events related to crab fishing vessels (often conducted far offshore and in winter) have continued to occur, marked progress (significant downward trend, p , 0.001) has been made in saving the lives of people involved in vessels capsizing and sinking. CONCLUSIONS: Specific measures tailored to prevent drowning associated with vessels capsizing and sinking in Alaska's commercial ...
I worked in a wastewater treatment plant (Jan. 2000 until Feb. 2002) that processed class A (alkaline stabilization) and class B (lime addition but no heat treatment) sludge and occasionally processed sludge as controlled waste (no lime or heat) in a poorly ventilated facility. There were 5 operators running the sewage processing, two of the 5 operators have become chronically ill (myself and my co-worker, Mr. Dean Richardsen) with very serious symptoms. Mr. Richardsen and I have ongoing claims with the Workers Compensation Board, both of us have very similar health complaints including but not limited to the following symptoms reported to my physician Dr. Julianna Losier MD CCFP in late 2002. Here is a quote from a letter written by her to the compensation board.. 'Mr. Bruce was in extremely good health prior to working at the Saanich Peninsula Wastewater Treatment Plant. He has developed a number of serious symptoms since starting work at the plant. His major predominant symptoms were ...

Income from commercial fishing dramatically declined immediately after the spill, and for a variety of reasons, disruptions to income from commercial fishing continue today, as evidenced by changes in average earnings, ex-vessel prices and limited entry permit values. Natural variability in fish returns and a number of economic changes in the commercial fishing industry since 1989 probably mean that many of these changes in income are not directly attributable to the spill. However, these factors also make discerning spill-related impacts difficult. Economic changes confronting the industry include the increased world supply of salmon (due primarily to farmed salmonids) and corresponding reduced prices, entry restrictions in certain fisheries (such as Individual Fishing Quotas, for halibut and sablefish), allocation changes (e.g., a reduction in the allocation of Cook Inlet sockeye salmon to commercial fishermen), reduction in processing capacity, and spatial limitations of groundfish fisheries ...
At present it seems likely that the different components of the hand-arm vibration syndrome, eg, vibration-induced white finger (VWF), numbing of the hands and arms, muscular fatigue, and occasionally prevalent bone degeneration, may arise independently, and therefore they should be evaluated separately. Evidence of changes caused in the autonomic nervous functions of the body by local vibration is not conclusive. The vascular history should be confirmed objectively with a cold provocation test under laboratory conditions. In individual diagnostics it is useful to record (with modern plethysmographic techniques) the recovery of digital temperature, digital blood pressure, and flow after local cooling. Vibrotactile perception measurement seems to be suitable for group diagnosis. Much of the diagnostic weight for VWF can be obtained from accurate case histories, although, for early changes, the history may be atypical. The lack of simple objective tests for evaluating the hand-arm vibration ...

The table has been drafted by the Molinari Economic Institute (Paris), which calculates Free Day, the symbolic date when it is believed that employees start to work for them, the first period representing the work for paying taxes to the state.. According to an analysis of the National Social Bloc, out of 120 countries where a social security system is developed, none left the payment of social contributions exclusively to the employee, as the new bills provide in Romania.. Trade unions allege that this "social experiment", unique in Europe, eliminates the principle of social solidarity and responsibility on which social security systems are built, to which both employers and employees contribute.. On Wednesday, at the end of the meeting between the authorities and the representatives of the 6,000 union members protesting in Victoriei Square, Prime Minister Mihai Tudose explained that it is very difficult to give up at this moment the transfer of contributions:. "It was a package, the Law on ...
What is No-Fault? If you are injured in a Bronx car accident, you are entitled to No-Fault benefits which will pay for your medical treatment, drugs, medical appliances, other medical expenses, household help and lost wages. The minimum coverage required under New York law is $50,000, but there may be more.. How to file an application for no-fault benefits: A claim for no-fault benefits must be filed within 30 days of your accident! No-Fault benefits are usually paid by the car insurance company for the car you were in at the time of the accident. If you were a pedestrian struck by a car in the Bronx, No-Fault benefits will be paid by the insurance company for the car that hit you. Sometimes it can be difficult to determine which insurance company is the No-Fault insurance company or whether your benefits will be paid by worker's compensation. Be sure to tell me if you are working at the time of your accident because your medical bills may be covered by workers compensation instead of no-fault ...

A good starting point for anyone thinking about how hearing loss relates to workers' compensation is to understand the kinds of hearing loss. Hearing loss is divided into three types. Conductive hearing loss is caused by problems in the outer or middle ear that prevent some frequencies from reaching the inner ear, where sounds are converted into electrical signals that the brain interprets. Conductive hearing loss can be caused by things like ear infections, fluid from colds, or punctured ear drums. Exposure to loud noise doesn't cause conductive hearing loss. Work-related conductive hearing loss would need to involve something more than just noise: an object getting stuck in the outer ear, for example. Sensorineural hearing loss is the second type. It takes place in the inner ear and can be caused by aging, genetic predisposition, or illnesses. It can also be caused by exposure to loud noises, making it the more likely type of hearing loss to be covered by workers' compensation. The third type ...

Repetitive strain injury, or RSI, is also known as work-related upper limb disorder. It can be a muscle, tendon, or nerve injury that occurs in an upper limb. RSI can result in pain, aches, swelling, cramps, tingling, numbness, or weakness in the affected areas of the body. It is usually caused by repetitive movements of a particular part of the body during work, as well as awkward posturing and stress.. There are several types of RSI, and these include carpal tunnel syndrome, bursitis, tendonitis, tenosynovitis, frozen shoulder, epicondylitis, and others. Carpal tunnel syndrome results from the compression of the median nerve at the wrist, and it causes tingling, numbness, and muscle weakness in the hand and the fingers. Women are more susceptible to this condition than men, because they have smaller carpal tunnels. Bursitis refers to the inflammation of the bursa, which is a fluid-filled sac that is located at the joints, such as the shoulders or the knee. This injury is caused by too much ...
Is degenerative disc disease work related, even if it results in low back surgery and permanent work restrictions? This second part blog continues the discussion of work-related degenerative disc disease. Yes, if a traumatic work accident caused the degeneration to accelerate beyond normal progression or if the degeneration itself was contributed to by your job duties over time. Your workers' compensation attorney must have a sincere understanding of the medicine involving low back degenerative disc disease which can lead to low back disability, permanent work restrictions, and loss of earning capacity.. The nucleus may push through the torn annulus and into the spinal canal. This is called a herniated or ruptured disc. The disc material that squeezes out can press against the spinal nerves. The disc also emits enzymes and chemicals that produce inflammation. The combination of pressure on the nerves and inflammation caused by the chemicals released from the disc cause pain.. As the degeneration ...

Pre-Event Actions (and Inactions?). The article accompanying the darning headline above described how the NRC staff produced a report in June 1984-more than two years before the fatal accident-warning about the pipe rupture hazard and criticizing the agency for taking no steps to manage the known risk. The article further explained that the NRC's 1984 report was in response to a 1982 event at the Oconee nuclear plant in South Carolina where an eroded steam pipe had ruptured.. Indeed, the NRC's Office for Analysis and Evaluation of Operational Data (AEOD) issued a report (AEOD/EA 16) titled "Erosion in Nuclear Power Plants" on June 11, 1984. The last sentence on page two stated "Data suggest that pipe ruptures may pose personnel (worker) safety issues.". Indeed, a 24-inch diameter pipe that supplied steam to a feedwater heater on the Unit 2 reactor at Oconee had ruptured on June 28, 1982. Two workers in the vicinity suffered steam burns which required in hospitalization overnight. Like at Surry, ...

In 1954, the Internal Revenue Service stipulated that employer contributions to the health insurance plans of their employees were to be excluded from employee taxable income. Today, the tax subsidy is major feature of the U.S. health care market. This paper examines the initial effects of the tax subsidy on the demand for health insurance using previously unexamined data from 1953 and 1958. Results suggest that the tax subsidy increased the growth of group insurance, particularly among union members and employed persons. This is a critical effect because group insurance is not only less expensive than individual insurance, but it is also easier to obtain, and households with access to group health insurance are far more likely to purchase health insurance coverage than those without similar access. By increasing access to group insurance, the tax subsidy fostered an increase in the purchase of group health insurance by people who may not have purchased individual coverage, and generated ...

The study of the measles incidence rates and the vaccination rates in the USA showed that there was a clear pattern of increasing immunisation rates followed by declining incidence rates. The opposite pattern was also true (decreasing immunisation rates increased the number of cases). Detailed figures were available in the article.. The measles incidence (cases/100,000 population) relating to the pre-school vaccination rates varied from 13.2 (40 to 49% pre-school vaccination rate) to 0.001 (70 to 79% pre-school vaccination rate).. The proportion of measles cases with meningitis was 0.1%.. The proportion of patients with meningitis who had permanent disabilities was 25%.. The proportion of patients with meningitis with slight permanent disabilities was 20%.. The life expectancy at age 2 was 74.1 years.. The life expectancy for children with slight disabilities was 74.1 years.. The life expectancy for children with moderate disabilities was 64 years.. The life expectancy for children with severe ...

JTA) - The British Parliament overwhelmingly voted for a nonbinding motion to recognize the state of Palestine.. The measure passed by a vote of 274-12 following a six-hour debate Monday, Haaretz reported.. Prime Minister David Cameron and much of his Conservative Party abstained from voting on the motion, which was sponsored by opposition Labor lawmaker Grahame Morris.. Jewish lawmaker Ed Miliband, who heads Labor, ordered all party lawmakers to vote in favor of the recognition.. The vote has no practical significance, as the British government is not obliged to change its policy on recognizing Palestine only after a peace deal is reached between Israel and the Palestinians.. Cameron's official spokesman told reporters before the vote, "I've been pretty clear about the government's position and it won't be changing.". Seven European Union members have recognized a Palestinian state. They are Bulgaria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Malta, Poland and Romania.. In 2012, the United Nations ...
Football is one of America's favorite pastimes. In recent years the health risks associated with football have stepped into the national spotlight. The NFL continues to be slammed with head injury lawsuits from well-known players like Tony Doresett, and Jim McMahon. Even with the negative publicity, the NFL has not made serious strides to prevent brain injuries and the traumatic impact they have on players' lives.. Because an NFL players careers put them at risk for injury, it falls under the guise of workers' compensation. Players from the 1970's through the 1990's, were instructed by NFL staff to use their helmets as a method of blocking opponents, putting their heads and necks directly in harm's way.
