Objectives The aim of the present study was to investigate whether the direction of shift rotation was related to the need for recovery, fatigue, sleep quality, work-family conflict, and leisure time among three-shift workers.. Methods Data of 95 workers in forward-rotating three-shift work and 681 workers in backward-rotating three-shift work, with 32 months of follow-up, in the Maastricht cohort study (N=12 095) were used. Both cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses were carried out.. Results A backward rotation schedule was prospectively related to an increased need for recovery [relative risk (RR) 2.88, 95% confidence interval (95% CI) 1.06-7.81] and poor general health (RR 3.21, 95% CI 1.32-7.83), as compared with a forward rotation schedule. Adjustment for demographic and health variables and the characteristics of the work environment did not alter these relations considerably. Furthermore, a forward rotation schedule was prospectively related to less work-family conflict and better ...
Legislation on Hours of Work. The increased interest from the scientific community, labor representatives, and industry, has led to increased legislative activity nationwide on long work hours and involuntary overtime. The Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 (FLSA), which regulates overtime, imposes no limits on overtime hours and does not prevent firing or any other penalty for declining overtime work. Proposals are spreading through the states to cap the number of overtime hours that can be forced in a given time period, or to make overtime more of a voluntary choice in select occupations. Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, New Jersey, Oregon, Washington, and West Virginia are states that have passed legislation that places some limits on mandatory overtime for nurses.. There are major flaws with the analyses in the Vistisen et al (1) cohort study examining if night shift work is a short-term risk factor for breast cancer.. The crucial problem is the potential for exposure misclassification, which is very high. The authors definition of day shift is ≥3 hours of work between 06:00-20:00 hours. This means that a worker on an 8-hour shift that begins at 03:00 hours would be classified as a day rather than night shift worker because he/she worked only two hours between 24:00-05:00 hours. Similarly, a second shifter might start work at 17:00 but not get off until 01:00 and yet still be classified as a day shift worker. This does not make sense as a baseline comparison group unexposed to work during the night hours.. A sensible classification system would be to define day shift as any shift that begins after 07:00 and ends before 18:00 hours. This is straightforward and avoids all of the ambiguities inherent in the definition used by the authors.. In ...

By Tamzyn Murphy, RD, MSc (dist.). Night shift workers are prone to conditions associated with insulin resistance (Hidalgo M, 2010) - obesity (Peplonska B et al., 2015; Chen J et al. 2009) and metabolic disease, diabetes (Pan A et al, 2011) and cardiovascular disease (Knutsson & Boggild, 2011).. Melatonin - the sleep hormone - is necessary for the proper synthesis, secretion, and action of insulin - the primary fat storage-regulating hormone (Cipolla-Neto J et al., 2014). Melatonin promotes sleep and is released at night a few hours before sleep and throughout the night. Exposure to light at night and night-time wakefulness reduces melatonin production and secretion. So, its unsurprising then that night-shift work is associated with insulin resistant conditions.. Night shift work also disrupts circadian rhythm (resulting in sleep deprivation), night-day eating patterns and increases stress (Reiter R et al., 2011) - all of which also interfere with insulin action, hunger and metabolic ...
All other PELs are based upon 8-hour time weighted average (TWA), a short term exposure limit (STEL), or a ceiling limit (C).. The lead PEL of 50 micrograms per cubic meter (ug/m3) is adjusted in accordance with the following formula:. New PEL = 400/hours worked during shift. e.g. If an employee works a 10 hour shift, the PEL is reduced from 50 ug/m3 to 40 ug/m3. Additionally, as discussed in OHShub.coms post PEL Adjustments for Extended Work Shifts - Noise, the Action Level for noise must be reduced for extended work shifts based on the following formula:. New AL (dBA) = 90 + 16.61 x log (50 / (12.5 x number of hours worked)). e.g. If an employee works a 10 hour shift, the PEL is reduced to 83 dBA. From a recommended practice standpoint, the Brief and Scala model provides a easy method of reducing exposure limits and is noted ACGIHs TLVs and BEIs documentation. The Brief and Scala model provides a reduction factor via the following formula:. Reduction Factor = (8 x hours worked in shift) x ...

Seoul, South Korea - Working more than 40 hours per week increases the risk of developing coronary heart disease, indicates a new study from Seoul National University. Researchers studied 8,350 Korean adults from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2007-2009). Participants answered questions about their working hours and health, and underwent physical exams and measurements to calculate a Framingham risk score, which estimates 10-year cardiovascular risk. The more hours that workers logged, the more likely they were to develop the disease within a . . .

In 2013, researchers at Boston Childrens Hospital and Brigham and Womens Hospital launched a multi-center study comparing a work schedule that included traditional, extended work shifts for resident physicians (24 hours or more) with a schedule that eliminated extended shifts and cycled resident physicians through day and night shifts (maximum, 16 hours). They expected the new schedule with shorter shifts would reduce serious medical errors by allowing residents to get more sleep. But as they report today in The New England Journal of Medicine, they found something different: patient safety worsened at some of the sites. On further analysis, a key factor that appeared to drive medical errors was how many patients each resident cared for.
Long working hours and depression episodes. Further analysis of the Whitehall II study has found that working long hours may predispose people to major depressive episodes. The odds ratio for a middle-aged civil servant, with no history of mental illness, to experience a major depressive episode after working long hours was 2.43 times higher for those working at least 11 hours a day, compared with those working a seven- or eight-hour day. Adjusting the data for chronic physical disease, smoking, alcohol use and work-related social support had little effect on this association.. Background: Night shift work has been associated with an increased risk for breast and prostate cancer. The effect of circadian disruption on sex steroid production is a possible underlying mechanism, underinvestigated in humans. We have assessed daily rhythms of sex hormones and melatonin in night and day shift workers of both sexes.. Methods: We recruited 75 night and 42 day workers, ages 22 to 64 years, in different working settings. Participants collected urine samples from all voids over 24 hours on a working day. Urinary concentrations of 16 sex steroid hormones and metabolites (estrogens, progestagens, and androgens) and 6-sulfatoxymelatonin were measured in all samples. Mean levels and peak time of total and individual metabolite production were compared between night and day workers.. Results: Night workers had higher levels of total progestagens [geometric mean ratio (GMR) 1.65; 95% confidence intervals (CI), 1.17-2.32] and androgens (GMR: 1.44; 95% CI, 1.03-2.00), compared with day ...

That, however, was not the whole story. Unions share Hansens concern that the doubt cast on the cancer association by the HSE/CRUK backed paper adversely affected efforts to recognise, address and compensate night work related breast cancer. Both HSE and CRUK had to make good. Only it turned out neither organisation was willing to budge. CRUKs Amy Hirst told Hazards the IARC review involving top cancer scientists from round the world was interesting, but added there havent been any major changes to what we know since IARCs last review. The evidence on the link between cancer and night shift work is still inconsistent and unclear and the most convincing findings linking the two are in animals. More research is needed before we can say for sure whether it affects peoples cancer risk.. But there are lots of proven ways to reduce your risk of prostate, colorectal and breast cancer. Our advice to night shift workers would be the same for anyone else - focus on the things that we know can ...

Recently, the British Medical Journal released a study that concludes working long hours leaders to heavy drinking. Per the study, people who work more than 48 hours in one week drink more.. Heavy drinking can lead to alcoholism, cirrhosis of the liver, domestic violence and child abuse. Although drinking is not the only response to stress, it is one of the worst, and sometimes those who engage in drinking do other drugs too.. Click here to read the entire news post.. This meta-analysis supports the longstanding suspicion that among workers subjected to long working hours, alcohol can seem like a fast acting and effective way to dull work related aches and pains and smooth the transition between work life and home life. Indeed, these findings could add impetus to further regulation of working hours as a public health intervention.. One mechanism linking long working hours to risky alcohol consumption is that the constraints of time might leave some workers with few choices but to rely on alcohol ...

Downloadable! Working time arrangements are key elements of working conditions and determine the possibilities for employees to balance work with their other life spheres. Therefore, this paper examines the level of working time satisfaction of employees and identifies the factors that may facilitate or impede satisfaction with working time using crosssectional data from the German BIBB/BAuA-Employment Survey. The analytical basis is a generalized ordered logistic regression model. The main results indicate that individual time-sovereignty is positively linked with a high level of working time satisfaction. Worker-friendly working time arrangements, which lead to less stress, insecurity and mental pressure, increase satisfaction levels, whereas atypical working time arrangements, such as unpaid overtime and working shifts, weekends and under high intensity, reduce satisfaction levels. I think we can all agree that feelings of constant fatigue, tiredness, sleepiness and drowsiness certainly comes with the territory when working 24/7. However whilst a good part of this may ring true, its important to understand that shift work may not be the only reason thats causing you to feel like a deflated balloon. What do I mean by this? The results of this study support an association between long working hours and significantly higher likelihood of CMD and SI among JDs. Once JDs were working more than 55 hours a week, there was a doubling of risk for both CMD and SI. As a quarter (25.3%) of the sample reported working over 55 hours in an average week, these results suggest a considerable proportion of JDs may be at substantially increased risk of mental health problems and SI associated with longer working hours.. The main limitations of this study were its use of self-reported estimated working hours and cross-sectional data, the low response rate and that data was collected in 2013. Reported average hours worked are subject to recall bias, may deviate from actual hours worked and may not include unpaid hours, rostered and unrostered overtime, extra time on-call or proportion of night shifts across the week. However, an overall average of weekly hours provides a simple indicator of JDs current working hours that can be ...
Usually when people dont workout they arent as hungry and then the days they workout they are more hungry - or for some its the opposite where they are more hungry on rest days and less hungry during workout days. So that balances itself out. But also usually when you workout you might eat more before you workout or more after you workout or you might have a pre or post workout snack which you dont eat on your rest days so that also gives more of a balance. Because of course you do need more energy the days you workout, but if you are working out alot or you have a goal to get stronger or build muscle or get faster then it wont help you to eat less on your rest days. .Because if you eat the same amount on your rest days then that extra energy will be used towards your workout the following day as well as that energy will help your muscles recover properly so no, you dont need to eat less during your rest days... unless its that you gain alot of weight overtime and the weight gain isnt ...

Abstract: Background: The issues of long working hours and short sleep among professional drivers are increasing worldwide, making it necessary to study their health hazards. Obesity among professional drivers and conductors is becoming an equally challenge now a days. In the present study, we investigated the association between long working hours and short sleep with body mass index (BMI) among male drivers and conductors in the city of Multan, Pakistan. Methods: The cross-sectional sample of 345 participants (197 drivers and 148 conductors) was taken using a convenient sampling technique with the help of a self-administered questionnaire. From the participants, the data were collected about their daily work-ing hours, sleeping hours and working period. Anthropometric measurements (weight and height) of each participant were taken to calculate BMI. Along with descriptive statistics and percentages, Chi-square test was used to examine the association in the full sample and stratified by study ...
We investigated the effects of shift work on Peak Expiratory Flow (PEF) measurements used for diagnosing occupational asthma (OA). In a clinic database of workers investigated for OA, 123 workers with OA and 69 workers without OA had PEF records containing ,1 shift pattern with ≥4 days on each shift. The OA definition was based on Oasys-2 score ,2.51 and the non-OA on an alternative clinical diagnosis and Oasys-2 score ,2.51. Records not fulfilling the minimum data quantity for the Area Between Curves (ABC) PEF score, or containing respiratory infections, changes in asthma treatment or different exposures on each shift were excluded. The mean ABC score, mean PEF diurnal variation (DV) on workdays and cross-shift PEF changes were calculated for each shift. The ABC score of the OA workers was lower on nights (p=0.028) and afternoons (p=0.020) compared to day shifts, without significant differences in diurnal variation. There was statistically significant difference between day and night shift ...

Irregular sleeping patterns have been unequivocally shown to lead to [breast] cancer in tests on mice, a study suggests, BBC News reports. Scientists are concerned a similar effect may occur in women working night shifts. This study looked at mice genetically modified to develop breast cancer. They were exposed to either a normal cycle of 12 hours of light and 12 hours of darkness or an inverted cycle. It found mice in the inverted group gained more weight and developed breast cancer sooner. These findings appear to support previous research suggesting a link between night-shift work and breast cancer, which we discussed in 2012 and 2013.. Further human research will be required to determine if shift working does increase the risk and what measures can be taken to minimise this. The researchers go as far as recommending that women with a known predisposition to breast cancer (such as having genetic mutations linked to breast cancer) should avoid shift work. But, obviously, not everyone has ...
Abstract: A critical review was conducted of social, psychological, and health science literature on the array of health risks and morbidities of truckers. Multilevel worksite-induced strains (e.g., long work hours and fatigue, shift work and sleep deprivation, postural fatigue and exposure to noise and vibration, sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy diet, exposure to diesel exhaust fumes, and other occupational stressors) were categorized into six primary morbidities for truckers: (1) psychological and psychiatric disorders; (2) detriments resulting from disrupted biological cycles; (3) musculoskeletal disorders; (4) cancer and respiratory morbidities; (5) cardiovascular disease; and (6) risk-laden substance use and sexual practices. Elevated morbidity risks suggest the need for the design and implementation of systematic epidemiological research and environmental interventions in the transport sector.. Working on shifts, especially on a night shift, influences the endogenous sleep regulation system leading to diminished sleep time and increased somnolence. We attempted to evaluate the impact of shifts on sleepiness and correlate the sleepiness score to the experience in a shift schedule. This cross-sectional study consists of 42 male and 2 female workers involved in a tunnel construction. They underwent spirometry, pulse oximetry and were asked to complete the Epworth Sleepiness Scale questionnaire. Statistical analysis revealed that workers of lower Epworth had a mean age of 43.6 years, compared to the mean age of 36.4 years of workers with higher Epworth. Furthermore, workers of lower Epworth were characterized by a mean number of shift years equal to 14.8, while those of higher Epworth possessed a mean number of shift years equal to 8. The shift schedule did not reveal any statistically significant correlation. Workers employed for a longer time had diminished sleepiness. However, there is no

Are you having trouble sleeping? Or do you feel like you can barely stay awake when you need to? Are you left tired and irritable, lacking the joy and motivation that life once brought? If these complaints are tied to your long or rotating work schedule, you may be suffering from shift work disorder-a common ailment among professions with schedules outside the typical 9 am to 6 pm range.[1]. Why does it matter? Lets be honest-being tired stinks. It feels terrible and leaves you vulnerable to many health risks that well-rested people arent as susceptible to. Not only that, but it can also wreak havoc on your relationships and quality of life.. The good news is that there are plenty of ways to help manage this, and you can start trying them out today! Some of the solutions may not be what you expect. For instance, you might have linked improved sleep to exercise, but did you know that being compassionate with yourself can also have an impact?. ...

January 16, 2014. Science Daily/University at Buffalo. Police officers working the night shift are significantly more likely to suffer long-term on-the-job injuries than officers on day and afternoon shifts, according to new research.. The study found that, independent of age and gender, urban officers working nights were three times more likely than those on the day shift, and 2.2 times more likely than those on the afternoon shift, to suffer injuries resulting in leaves of more than 90 days.. Leaves of this length suggest more serious types of injury and indicate that night shift work poses a more significant threat to the life and health of officers than previously assumed, says epidemiologist John Violanti, PhD, principle author of the study Shift work and long-term injury among police officers, published in the current edition of the Scandinavian Journal of Work and Environmental Health.. The study assessed the association of daily shift schedules with the occurrence of injury leave and ...
Night-shift work is linked to a shift in food intake toward the normal sleeping period, and to metabolic disturbance. We applied a rat model of night-shift work to assess the immediate effects of such a shift in food intake on metabolism. Male Wistar rats were subjected to 8 h of forced activity during their rest (ZT2-10) or active (ZT14-22) phase. Food intake, body weight, and body temperature were monitored across four work days and eight recovery days. Food intake gradually shifted toward rest-work hours, stabilizing on work day three. A subgroup of animals was euthanized after the third work session for analysis of metabolic gene expression in the liver by real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Results show that work in the rest phase shifted food intake to rest-work hours. Moreover, liver genes related to energy storage and insulin metabolism were upregulated, and genes related to energy breakdown were downregulated compared to non-working time-matched controls. Both working groups lost ...
Conventional wisdom dictates that work is stressful and that time at home is relaxing. But new research finds cortisol levels are higher at home than at work. This is consistent with sociological research indicating work as a respite from stressful home life. Still, although work may not be stressful in itself, long work hours may exacerbate the stress at home.
Although Section 19851 of the California Government Code allows state agencies to use overtime to extend regular work schedules to properly carry on state business during staffing shortages, this section also states, It is the policy of the State to avoid the necessity for overtime work whenever possible. Nevertheless, with about 15 percent of the States nearly 188,000 available positions vacant as of December 31, 1998, it is more likely that state employees will work overtime. Excessive amounts of overtime can be detrimental to the State as well as to its employees. Excessive overtime can be more costly to the State than hiring additional employees because overtime pay rates are typically one and one-half times normal pay rates (time and a half). Overtime can also lead to increased use of employee sick leave, greater employee turnover, more workplace injuries, added disability claims, and loss of productivity. To assess overtime paid to state employees from July 1997 through March 1999, we ...
By Harvey Sohnen, Esq. and Patricia M. Kelly, Esq.. Recently, there has been new vigor in employees assertion of longstanding rights to overtime compensation in California. Last Julys Alameda County jury verdict of $90 million in Bell v. Law firms can also be subject to overtime claims. This article touches on some of the major issues.. Both state and federal law regulate employee compensation. The Fair Labor Standards Act , 29 U.S.C. § 200 et seq. and corresponding CFR provisions set forth the federal minimum wage and overtime requirements. Background: Naps during extended work shifts are effective in reducing fatigue in other industries, but the use of a nap as a countermeasure to prevent fatigue in residents is uncertain. Objective: To assess the effects of a call-night nap on resident sleep and fatigue. Design: 1-year, within-participant, paired trial with crossover at midmonth. Setting: Academic teaching hospital. Participants: 38 of 40 internal medicine interns. Measurements: Sleep was measured by using wristwatch actigraphy. By using the experience sampling method on a personal digital assistant, random alerts prompted interns to rate fatigue on the 7-point Stanford Sleepiness Scale (7 is most tired). Hospital paging logs and structured interviews provided information on use of coverage. Intervention: For 2 weeks of every month, interns were assigned to the nap schedule, which provided coverage to on-duty interns from midnight to 7:00 a.m. so that they could finish their work and take a nap. The Department of Labor has issued new rules about overtime pay. Effective Dec. 1, the following changes will apply:. The overtime pay eligibility threshold will rise to $913 per week from $455 per week, or $47,476 per year.. The eligibility threshold will update automatically every three years, based on wage growth over time.. Overtime protections for salaried workers who are entitled to overtime will be strengthened.. In addition to these changes, the Labor Department has addressed an issue of immense importance to our membership: Postdoctoral fellows will be eligible for overtime pay.. These rule changes are not unexpected. In the fall, the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology submitted comments to the Labor Department on this topic. We recommended that postdocs not be excluded from the changes but also called on the Labor Department to delay implementation beyond the Oct.1 start date so that researchers, who already wrestle with tight budgets, would have time to adjust to ...

Fine Treatment recommends Dr. Allens Device for Heart Treatment to use daily, including working hours, for the treatment of CHD, just when people experience discomfort in chest or angina, to prevent a heart attack and improve their heart muscle condition.. A recent article, Long working hours linked to increased risk of coronary heart disease, dated September 16, 2014, in the Medical News Today, states, According to a recent poll, 18% of adults employed full-time in the US work more than 60 hours a week. While your favorite fine dining establishment may not offer delivery service, there a number of app-based services that are cropping up across the country. Some apps like Grub Hub or Door Dash offer delivery from establishments that offer more basic fare, but if you live in a major city and appreciate great cuisine, you might try Caviar. Postmates also tends to offer more basic fare, but also deliver from a few more upscale establishments as well, depending on where you live.. Fine dining doesnt always have to mean going to a restaurant or enjoying the most gourmet meals. You can serve yourself a delicious steak burger and fries from your favorite restaurant on bone china with sterling flatware. The point is simply to treat yourself well. After all, you work hard every day, so take some time to appreciate yourself!. ...

I blame powerful cleaning agents for them not smelling the stench. See, another time we went out of budget for a cleaners treat. These occasions usually occur before unexpected houseguests, so that we can delude these friends that we are not slobs. I left the cleaners to do their thing, then returned home to the noxious scent of a cheap hooker. One in dire need of an olfactory system transplant. Seems the cleaner had used a product called Fabuloso, something that is apparently very popular amongst Latinas who clean, but the aroma of which had me running for the gas masks, if only Id stockpiled them post-911 and the anthrax-in-your-mailbox-scare. This confirmed my suspicions that cleaning a lot of houses with powerful toxins has rendered the noses of many cleaners basically dead zones. Because the smell of Fabuloso is so not fabuloso; rather it is so vile, toxic and lung-searing, that I had to fumigate my house when they left, re-cleaning with something more mainstream ...
The County Antrim land had been bought from the landlord, by virtue of the Irish Land Acts about 1900. These Acts of Parliament enabled the tenant farmers to buy their land under a 50-year annuity scheme and so become owner-occupiers. The annuity debt went with the farm in the case of the land being sold before the annuity had been repaid. The 40 acres in County Down, which adjoined the bigger County Antrim part, had been in the ownership of the McGeown family for a very long time, so long, in fact, that the Land Registry Office had no record of when it was actually acquired. The farm was mainly arable, with the addition of a few cows and beef cattle. Perhaps as many as 8 horses were used; one at least would have been a mare to breed replacements. The crops grown were potatoes, turnips, oats, wheat, Italian ryegrass and hay. Most of these were sold as cash crops. A few hens and ducks and a very few pigs were kept for domestic use, with a pig being slaughtered from time to time to supply bacon ...

Monday was a busy day in surgery. There were five GYN and seventeen general cases. The nurses in recovery stayed busy as case after case came back. The â  Georgia bellesâ  , Anora, Heather and Teahna all worked the morning shift together and did a great job as first timers looking after the recovery ward with the help of several veteran nurses. Miriam, Katie, Jordan and Charla all took turns on night shift throughout the week. We were certainly blessed to have so many nurses willing to work nights and take care of our sweet patients. They worked tirelessly and Miriam even wound up sleep walking at one point after she got off her shift. We all got a big kick out of that when she woke up and realized what was going on! I canâ  t talk about our recovery nurses without mentioning the sweet Devona who was a HUGE help to Dr. Walter and Rosario as she did her best to make sure our demerol count was correct each day. Keeping the demerol count correct can be a tough task so itâ ...
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Working long hours without an adequate amount of sleep is just one example of how farmers can increase their risk of injury during harvest, a safety expert with Ohio State Universitys College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences said.Knowing some simple safety precautions to take during harvesting is critical for farmers to reduce the potential for injuries, said Andy Bauer, an Ohio State University Extension agricultural health and safety professional. OSU Extension is the outreach arm of the college.. Harvesting is a time when farm workers are continually moving from one piece of equipment to another, Bauer said. This is a time when farmers should take extra precautions to prevent falls when working around farm equipment and in the fields, he said.. Harvest is a time that involves long hours and working with several different types of farm equipment simultaneously to achieve the same goal - completing the harvest, Bauer said. As a result, farmers put in long ...

He told me theres been a lot of changes in a very short time, and that the morning shift, who have been there the longest (some over a year now), are starting to revolt. He let slip that the hiring spree will apply to a massive overhaul of the morning crew. I felt bad for them, too. At least I got out without before being branded with a big red scarlet letter.. I broke the news to my friend at dinner break. She was hired in a couple weeks after I was. I sent her the ad for the place. *sigh*. At least I still have the day job for now.. Last night, after pondering how shitty its been for me having to work two jobs to make ends meet, and pondering how much worse off my mom was to work three jobs with two children, I began to read Nickel and Dimed: On (not) Getting By in America.. Id been resistant to read the book up til this point, because it brought up sticky memories of childhood. I just told everyone Id already lived it from the perspective of a child of a low wage parent, why should I read ...

Excerpt] This paper presents empirical estimates of the intra-industry cross-section relationship between annual overtime hours per man and the ratio of these quasi-fixed costs to the overtime wage rate. Estimates are also made of the impact of a change in the overtime premium on employment and hours; these estimates have implications for policymakers concerned with the wisdom of increasing the overtime premium as a method of job creation ...
