OBJECTIVE To identify and characterize alterations seen on HRCT scans in nonsmoking females with COPD due to wood smoke exposure. METHODS We evaluated 42 nonsmoking females diagnosed with wood smoke-related COPD and 31 nonsmoking controls with no history of wood smoke exposure or pulmonary disease. The participants completed a questionnaire regarding demographic data, symptoms, and environmental exposure. All of the participants underwent spirometry and HRCT of the chest. The COPD and control groups were adjusted for age (23 patients each). RESULTS Most of the patients in the study group were diagnosed with mild to moderate COPD (83.3%). The most common findings on HRCT scans in the COPD group were bronchial wall thickening, bronchiectasis, mosaic perfusion pattern, parenchymal bands, tree-in-bud pattern, and laminar atelectasis (p | 0.001 vs. the control group for all). The alterations were generally mild and not extensive. There was a positive association between bronchial wall thickening and hour

Four types of wood particle (WP) with different compositions: native wood flour (WF), hemicellulose-removed wood particle (HR), lignin-removed wood particle (holocellulose, HC), and both hemicellulose and lignin removed particle (α-cellulose, αC) were prepared and compounded with HDPE using extruder, both with and without maleated polyethylene (MAPE). Results show that removal of the hemicellulose improved the thermal stability of composites, while removal of the lignin facilitated thermal decomposition. ...

The Canadian boreal forest is largely represented by mixed wood forests of white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss) and trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx). In this study, a total of 300 trees originating from three sites composed of trembling aspen and white spruce with varying compositions were investigated for wood quality traits: one site was composed mainly of aspen, one mainly of spruce and a third was a mixed site. Four wood quality traits were examined: wood density, microfibril angle (MFA), fibre characteristics, and cell wall chemistry. Social classes were also determined for each site in an attempt to provide a more in-depth comparison. Wood density showed little variation among sites for both species, with only significant differences occurring between social classes. The aspen site showed statistically lower MFAs than the aspen from the mixed site, however, no differences were observed when comparing spruce. Fibre characteristics were higher in the pure species sites for both
A large amount of poplar plywood is now being imported into Japan from China, and as a result, formaldehyde emitted from this plywood represents an undesirable chemical that must be controlled using a chemical catching agent. The aim of this study is to find an approach to reduce the formaldehyde emission of poplar plywood using thermal treatment without employing any chemicals. The experimental results obtained show that heating veneer sheets in the temperature range of 150 °C to 170 °C effectively reduced the formaldehyde emission of plywood, without diminishing the mechanical properties of the veneer. By applying Langmuirs theory and Hailwood-Horrobin theory to the adsorption isotherm obtained in this study, the relationship between the formaldehyde emission of plywood and the adsorption properties of veneer as a material is discussed. When veneer sheets were heated in the temperature range of 150 °C to 170 °C, the amount of hydrated water (monomolecular layer) decreased slightly and that of
Organic gases emitted during the flaming phase of residential wood combustion are characterized individually and by functionality using proton transfer reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The evolution of the organic gases is monitored during photochemical aging. Primary gaseous emissions are dominated by oxygenated species (e.g., acetic acid, acetaldehyde, phenol and methanol), many of which have deleterious health effects and play an important role in atmospheric processes such as secondary organic aerosol formation and ozone production. Residential wood combustion emissions differ considerably from open biomass burning in both absolute magnitude and relative composition. Ratios of acetonitrile, a potential biomass burning marker, to CO are considerably lower (∼ 0.09 pptv ppbv-1) than those observed in air masses influenced by open burning (∼ 1-2 pptv ppbv-1), which may make differentiation from background levels difficult, even in regions heavily impacted by residential wood ...

The three main components of wood, namely, cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin, can be used in various areas. However, since lignin covalently crosslinks with wood polysaccharides creating networks that is an obstacle for extraction, direct extraction of different wood components in high yield is not an easy matter. One potential approach to overcome such obstacles is to treat the wood with specific enzymes that degrade the networks by specific catalysis. However, the structure of wood is so compact that the penetration of the wood fibers by large enzyme molecules is hindered. Thus, the pretreatment of wood prior to the application of enzymes is necessary, for "opening" the structure.. One pretreatment method that was performed in this thesis is based on kraft pulping, which is a well-established and industrialized technique. For untreated wood, the wood fibers cannot be attacked by the enzymes. A relatively mild pretreatment was sufficient for wood polysaccharides hydrolyzed by a culture ...
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agencys final amended formaldehyde rules are now official. Structural plywood, oriented strand board (OSB) and other structural engineered wood products remain exempt from the EPA TSCA Title VI rules on formaldehyde emissions from composite wood products. The exemption includes all structural wood products manufactured with moisture resistant adhesives for construction and industrial applications, such as structural plywood, OSB, wood I-joists, laminated veneer lumber and glued-laminated timber. These products are manufactured using low emitting, moisture-resistant adhesives, per the applicable product standards and building codes that govern them.. Products marked with the APA Mark of Quality are exempt from the regulation because the APA trademark is used only on structural engineered wood products and not on particleboard, medium density fiberboard (MDF) or decorative hardwood plywood regulated by the EPA rules. In instances where unmarked structural ...
A wood enhancement agent treated engineered wood product. The wood enhancement agent typically includes at least one of a preservative, a water repellant, a fungicide, an insecticide, a stabilizing agent, wax, an ultra-violet light inhibitor, and combinations thereof, and may also include an antioxidant. The wood enhancement agent is incorporated into the engineered wood product during a billet making process or after forming the billet. The wood enhancement agent may be applied simultaneously with a bonding agent or at a later time, for example applied to a scrim log mat during a pre-press process or inside a steam press chamber. Alternatively, the wood enhancement agent may be applied to a warm billet after steam press, or to a reheated billet, by dipping, spraying, or flood coating the billet, or by diffusion, vacuum impregnation, pressure, or a combination thereof.
Pressure-treated wood impregnated with chromated copper arsenate (CCA) - often with a greenish tint - was widely used for decks and porches prior to its being discontinued for residential use in 2003-2004. Since treated wood has a long lifespan, there is still plenty of CCA pressure-treated wood surrounding residences, prompting caution due to its arsenic content. High tropical forests deforestation for solid wood furniture industry is among of climate change contributing agents. This pressure indirectly is caused by furniture joints failure due to poor gluing technology based on improper use of different glues to different wood species which lead to low quality and weak wood-glue joints. This study was carried in order to run performance tests of wood glues on different wood species used in wood workshops: Morogoro Tanzania whereby three popular wood species of C. lusitanica, T. glandis and E. maidenii were tested against five glues of Woodfix, Bullbond, Ponal, Fevicol and Coral found in the market. The findings were necessary on developing a guideline for proper glue selection for a particular wood species joining. Random sampling was employed to interview carpenters while conducting a survey on the background of carpenters like their education level and to determine factors that influence their glues choice. Monsanto Tensiometer was used to determine ...

Impulse-cyclone Drying Treatment of Poplar Wood Fibers and its Effect on Composite Materials Properties. Feng Chen,a,b Qingde Li,a Xun Gao,a Guangping Han a and Wanli Cheng,a,*. The fiber quality after a conventional drying treatment used for wood-plastic composites (WPCs) cannot be ascertained prior to use. Through the application of scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction, the effect of an impulse-cyclone drying (ICD) treatment on the quality of poplar wood fiber was first investigated. Subsequently, the effect of ICD conditions, such as inlet temperature, inlet wind velocity, and feed rate on the mechanical properties of WPCs and fiber dispersibility was considered. Also, the quality of fibers and WPCs was compared to those treated via an oven-drying method. Poplar wood fibers with a moisture content of 12.4% were pre-treated at different drying conditions by ICD. The obtained fibers were compounded with high-density polypropylene. The ...
Q: I dont have a fireplace, but Id like to save on my heating bill this winter by installing a wood stove. How difficult would it be to install one? Any tips on what kind I should get?. A: Believe it or not, installing a wood stove system in your house is fairly simple. In fact, you dont even have to have a brick masonry chimney to have a wood stove- it can be placed almost anywhere. If you do have an existing fireplace, there are free standing stoves that can be easily connected to your flu, as well as fireplace/stove hybrids that fit right into the fireplace opening. Depending on the size you choose, wood stoves can heat anywhere between 600 square feet and 3,000 square feet of space. While some people might want a larger stove to heat the entire house, others might want a smaller stove to keep a few rooms warm and keep their heat pump from kicking on. In choosing a stove, there are several things to consider. Heat quality depends on the quality of the stove. Cast iron and soapstone stoves ...

Wood cell walls represent highly complex biocomposites that consists of repertoires of polysaccharides and lignins integrated into a three-dimensional conglomerate [1, 2]. At the microstructural level, wood cell walls are composed of both primary- and dominating secondary cell wall layers in which the major (cellulose, lignin and hemicelluloses) and minor (pectins, proteins) chemical components are heterogeneously dispersed and integrated. Understanding the cell walls complexity is of great interest both for plant biology and for plant processing in food and pulp industry.. One of the key main challenges for an improved understanding of wood cell wall structure especially, in relation to properties, is an ability to specifically localise and visualised the spatial distribution of the major polysaccharide components (cellulose and hemicelluloses) in vivo. In lignified cell walls this is quite challenging since the hemicelluloses interface between the cellulose and lignin forming a heterogeneous ...
In attempting to purchase an affordable new bed frame made of real wood, I found that most employees dont know what their stores products are made of. More than once I would call two stores, both distributors for the exact same wood bed frame, and receive two different answers about the bed frames composition. Example: store #1: "bed X is solid wood because we would never sell a composite wood product here"; store #2: "bed X is composite wood with hardwood veneers." Often I was told a bed was all real wood, and then when I asked specifically about the slats, the employee conceded that the slats were in fact plywood. And I was only calling local furniture stores that touted themselves as "green" or "natural." This ruined my confidence in knowing what a bed frame was actually made of without first driving to the store and looking at the frame for myself. I did end up with a hardwood bed frame (including hardwood slats), but it was a major hassle that involved Sherlock Holmes-level investigative ...

All wood preservatives must contain a fungicide that is registered with the Environmental Protection Agency. A wood preservative that is factory pressure-treated is guaranteed for life and does not require subsequent brush-on treatments. Look for a water-based product that contains a fungicide such as penta or cuprinol. For farm use, a nonpaintable preservative containing wax or creosote oil is best. In wet conditions, use a preservative that includes a water repellent. Look for a waterborne preservative containing 3-iodo-2-propynyl butyl carbamate for good, environmentally responsible protection for your exterior wood.. ...

The growth in the demand for wood in various applications and increasing awareness of the benefits of wood preservative has led to an increase in the demand for wood preservative. In 2016, North America accounted for the largest share of the global wood preservative market. ...
Wood density is an important characteristic of wood and one which plays a major role in determining the strength of wood products. One quantity useful in calculating wood density is called area-increment, which is the cross-sectional area of a specific ring at a particular height. Area increment is derived from radial measures taken from X-ray scan data that extend from the pith to the inside and outside of a particular ring. The focus of this study is the modeling of area increment as a function of a scaled measurement of the tree-height at which area-increment was determined from samples taken at various heights of 60 lodgepole pine trees at BC. Lodgepole pine is an important commercial species that is highly responsive to intensive management practices and is grown for a wide variety of wood products.. The relationship between area increment and scaled tree height is modeled as a hierarchical segmented regression model. Slopes of the segments vary over trees in this mixed-effect modeling ...

INTRODUCTION. The use of micro-sized samples to determine the mechanical properties of wood is gaining in importance. However, to date, there is no standard method for employing micro-sized test samples. Sample dimensions and loading rates vary from one study to another, while micro-sized wood samples have been used for different purposes by several researchers, including to determine the mechanical properties of earlywood and latewood sections, wood strands and fibers (Jeong 2008, Jeong et al. 2009, Groom et al. 2002, Mott et al. 2002, Kretschmann et al. 2006, Hindman and Lee 2007, Deomano and Zink-Sharp 2004, Zink-Sharp and Price 2006).. Micro-sized samples can be used to determine the mechanical properties of wood when obtaining standard-sized test samples is not possible. In order to avoid damaging wood material for further use in various applications, mechanical properties can be determined by using micro-sized test samples. Moreover, test samples of structural wood material can be taken ...

A study in New York - where up to 90% of the Particulate Matter measured came from wood combustion - found 26% of the population was exposed to wood smoke, with the poorer, more crowded and less-white populations receiving the highest levels of PM. Spikes of over 100 μg/m3 per cubic meter occurred during nighttime mobile monitoring, with the report linking such peaks to heart and lung problems, including heart attacks and asthma.. 6) Smoke Enters Homes. Its a common misconception that the only exposure to wood smoke occurs outdoors. However, a substantial amount of smoke actually enters the homes of wood burners, with particulate matter levels found to be 26% higher, benzene levels 29% higher, and PAHs 300% to 500% higher in the homes of wood burners, compared to those who use other heating sources. Another study estimated 70% of outdoor smoke can re-enter a home.. Those who dont burn wood themselves, yet live in a neighborhood of wood burners, experience indoor particulate levels 50-70% of ...

Pressure-treated wood has a long history−its been around since the second half of the 19th century. Wood has been preserved with chemicals containing various pesticides as a means to protect against such intruders as termites and decay fungi. This course will provide a background on traditional CCA-treated wood, and will introduce the next-generation preservative−copper azole. We will discover how it works, why it exists, what it protects against, available types, how it is made, where it is used, and how it differs from traditional treated wood, including its key features. At the completion of this course, you will be able to describe the pressure preservative process, explain the treated wood transition that occurred in 2003, discuss the features and uses of copper azole-treated wood, and detail the many environmental benefits of treated wood ...

Wood dust is one of the oldest and one of the most common occupational exposures in the world. The present analyses examine the effect of lifetime exposure to wood dust in diverse occupational settings on lung cancer risk. We conducted two population-based case-control studies in Montreal: Study I (1979-1986) included 857 cases and two sets of controls (533 population and 1349 cancer controls), and Study II (1996-2001) comprised 736 cases and 894 population controls. Detailed job histories were obtained by interview and each job was evaluated by expert chemist-hygienists to estimate the likelihood and level of exposure to many substances, one of which was wood dust. Odds ratios (ORs) were computed in relation to different indices of exposure to wood dust, adjusting for several covariates including smoking. Three datasets were analysed: Study I with population controls, Study I with cancer controls, and Study II. The most frequently exposed occupations in our study population were in construction, timber

Because, while a little bit of wood ash on your garden can be beneficial - a lot of it generally leads to tears as it increases the alkalinity of the soil drastically, affecting the plants nutrition. Nutrients are most readily available to plants when the soil reads 7 on the pH chart and wood ash can throw this out of balance, pushing this number up towards 10.. "Since wood ash is derived from plant material, it contains most of the 13 essential nutrients the soil must supply for plant growth. When wood burns, nitrogen and sulfur are lost as gases, and calcium, potassium, magnesium and trace element compounds remain. The carbonates and oxides remaining after wood burning are valuable liming agents, raising pH, thereby helping to neutralize acid soils" (soil scientist, Dan Sullivan).. Of course, the fertilizer value of wood ash depends on the type of wood you burn. As a general rule, hardwoods (i.e. eucalyptus) yield more ash per kilogram of wood burned and contain a higher percentage of ...
Woodworkers are subject to a large number of occupational health problems resulting from exposure to woods, solvents, preservatives, adhesives, noise and vibration.. Many tropical and temperate timbers can cause skin irritation and/or allergies when they are being drilled, sawn, sanded, scraped, scored, chiselled, routed, planed, lathed, etc. The dangers are especially evident when the wood processing produces sawdust - and just about every kind of woodworking produces some dust.. Potentially hazardous tropical species include:. South American Boxwood, Cocobolo, Ebony, African Mahogany, Mansonia, Rosewood, Walnut, Satinwood, Iroko, Teak. [to be updated]. Potentially hazardous temperate species include:. Western Red Cedar, Beech, Cork Oak, Redwood. [to be updated]. ...
Very first the administration went soon after coal, now it truly is coming soon after wood heat? On my farm, wood is an considerable, renewable, (carbon neutral!) power supply that retains us heat in the winter and teaches my kids the price of hard function. And we burn it responsibly. Federal regulation of wood burning is misguided. I have seen conditions in which house proprietors abuse the assets rights of their neighbors by burning wood in a way that creates copious amounts of smoke. But these disputes should really be remaining up to states, and preferably, the states should really depart it up to the counties and metropolitan areas, mainly because a a single-measurement-fits-all tactic to wood burning is ridiculous. As the value of coal fired electricity goes up because of to the Presidents promise to bankrupt the coal industry, wood heat is a viable different for some individuals who are eager to break up wood alternatively of watching Television set. I imagine this administration would ...
If you suffer from anxiety, think about how frightened this tree must have been - it turned to stone. Use the weight of this stone to let go of your fear and to think about the process of growing stronger as a way of moving past anxiety. A few years ago a scientist at Pacific Northwest Laboratory discovered a way to make petrified wood in a kiln. First the wood is soaked in acid, then its soaked in silica solution, then its fired to over 1600C in a kiln. Dont worry, the petrified wood were selling is 100% natural. Each piece of stone wood* comes with an accompanying piece of wood wood. You can hold the stone in one hand and the wood in the other hand while you meditate on the transformation that wood underwent as it became stone.

Scientists from the Max Planck Institute have shown how sunken wood can develop into attractive habitats for a variety of microorganisms and invertebrates due to the activity of bacteria, which produce hydrogen sulfide during wood degradation.. Trees do not grow in the deep sea, nevertheless sunken pieces of wood can develop into oases for deep-sea life - at least temporarily until the wood is fully degraded. A team of Max Planck researchers from Germany now showed how sunken wood can develop into attractive habitats for a variety of microorganisms and invertebrates. By using underwater robot technology, they confirmed their hypothesis that animals from hot and cold seeps would be attracted to the wood due to the activity of bacteria, which produce hydrogen sulfide during wood degradation.. Many of the animals thriving at hydrothermal vents and cold seeps require special forms of energy such as methane and hydrogen sulfide emerging from the ocean floor. They carry bacterial symbionts in their ...
On July 7, 2010, President Barack Obama signed The Formaldehyde Standards for Composite Wood Products Act, based on the regulation developed by the California Air Resources Board (CARB). The wood industry, along with other nongovernmental organizations, supported the development of a national regulation compatible with the CARB Air Toxic Control Measure (ATCM) regulation. After several years of regulation development, including public comment periods, the national regulation took effect on June 1, 2018.. The regulation roll-out includes two phases. The first, and current phase, allows for two paths to regulation compliance: the CARB ATCM Phase II or the U.S. EPA TSCA Title VI. Beginning March 22, 2019, only one path to compliance will be allowed: the U.S. EPA TSCA Title VI.. Certification of compliance is required to be completed by a Third Party Certifier, who will verify that the regulated composite wood products manufacturer is capable of complying with the emission regulation. Quarterly ...
For their research, Gilani and her team cut 40 wood samples in the direction of the grain. 20 of these samples were taken from the young wood and the other 20 from the heartwood of a Norway spruce. Gilani and her colleagues also cut a further 20 samples from the same spruce across the grain. Based on these three types of test samples, the researchers were able to study the sound behaviour of different wood structures. Johanna Pflaum, a trained violin maker, student of environmental sciences and member of Gilanis research group, created two varnishes in the lab. The research group also received two further varnishes from German violin makers. Gilani coated the spruce samples with these four varnishes. For each type of sample, five of the twenty pieces of wood were coated with the same varnish and were dried and cured for eleven hours using UV light.. However before this, the researchers measured the stiffness and sound insulation of the wood samples in their raw state and the mass of the ...
A rather extensive degradation of cellulose and hemicelluloses was found in waterlogged oak wood samples from the ancient warship Vasa by size exclusion chromatography with the solvent system lithium chloride/N,N-dimethylacetamide (LiCl/DMAc). The degradation has mainly occurred after salvage of the wreck, probably as a consequence of keeping iron contaminated wood in contact with air. The most likely explanation is Fenton type of reactions degrading the wood polymers and oxidising reduced sulphur forms to sulphuric acid. An increased degradation rate of the Vasa wood can be anticipated in the future if the sulphuric acid cannot be neutralised and the oxidative reactions cannot be quenched.. ...
An international research group headed by Professor and Research Director Yrjö Helariutta has discovered the genetic process that controls the development of wood cells in the roots of plants. Wood is the vascular tissue that transports water and nutrients upward from the root, also contributing to the formation of the woody element in the stem. The work, published in the online version of the prestigious Current Biology journal, presents a potential method for engineering plants to produce more wood.. All multicellular organisms start life as a single cell. This cell begins to divide, and the new cells need to take on new identities. Understanding the genetic messages that control these processes helps researchers to direct the development of plants. Plant cells can be engineered to produce more or less of a certain cell or tissue, for example. More durable and faster-growing plants are particularly important in this era of climate change and energy considerations. The goal is to direct the ...
In this paper we derive typical emission factors for coarse particulate matter (PM10), oxides of nitrogen (NOx), black carbon (BC), and number particle size distributions based on a combination of measurements and air quality dispersion modeling. The advantage of this approach is that the emission factors represent integrated emissions from several vehicle types and different types of wood stoves. Normally it is very difficult to estimate the total emissions in cities on the basis of laboratory measurements on single vehicles or stoves because of the large variability in conditions. The measurements were made in Temuco, Chile, between April 18 and June 15, 2005 at two sites. The first one was located in a residential area relatively far from major roads. The second site was located in a busy street in downtown Temuco where wood consumption is low. The measurements support the assumption that the monitoring sites represent the impact of different emission sources, namely traffic and residential ...

The Environmental Protection Agency has reopened through May 8 the comment period for a proposed rule designed to ensure that imported or domestically produced composite wood products meet the formaldehyde emission standards established by Congress in 2010. The EPA will also hold a meeting on this issue April 28 in Washington, D.C.. The proposed rule would limit how much formaldehyde may be emitted from hardwood plywood, medium-density fiberboard, particleboard and finished goods that are sold, supplied, offered for sale, manufactured or imported in the U.S. The emitted formaldehyde may be left over from the resin or composite wood making process or be released when the resin degrades in the presence of heat and humidity. This proposal includes testing requirements, laminated product provisions, product labeling requirements, chain of custody documentation, recordkeeping, a stockpiling prohibition, and enforcement provisions. It also contains an exemption from some testing and recordkeeping ...

It was demonstrated that hydroxyacetone and carboxylic acids (acetic and propionic acids) in the pyroligneous acid were converted into aliphatic ketones (acetone and 2-butanone) via a ketonization reaction over the ZrO2-FeOX catalyst. However, reaction inhibition by metal impurities in the pyroligneous acid such as potassium (K) and magnesium (Mg) was also observed. ...
Wood - Wood as a material: As is indicated in the preceding sections of this article, the total number of products made from wood is enormous-as high as 10,000, by some estimates. Such wide application is made possible by the versatility of wood and its many desirable qualities, such as high strength for its weight, workability, and aesthetic appeal. But wood also has certain undesirable characteristics. It can burn and decay, for instance. It is hygroscopic (moisture-absorbing), and in gaining or losing moisture it changes dimensions. As a biological product, moreover, wood is variable in quality. In order to reduce the effects of these inherent undesirable
