Abstract: Wood specific gravity (WSG) is an important biometric variable for aboveground biomass calculations in tropical forests. Sampling a sufficient number of trees in remote tropical forests to represent the species and size distribution of a forest to generate information on WSG can be logistically challenging. Several thousands of wood samples exist in xylaria around the world that are easily accessible to researchers. We propose the use of wood samples held in xylaria as a valid and overlooked option. Due to the nature of xylarium samples, determining wood volume to calculate WSG presents several challenges. A description and assessment is provided of five different methods to measure wood sample volume: two solid displacement methods and three liquid displacement methods (hydrostatic methods). Two methods were specifically developed for this paper: the use of laboratory parafilm to wrap the wood samples for the hydrostatic method and two glass microbeads devices for the solid displacement

Id say the most intimidating thing about working with plywood is knowing how to cut it. You want to be very careful, because plywood has a wood grain, and if your pieces arent cut correctly, youll end up with mis matched wood grains. And then of course theres taking into account the width of a saw blade, and understanding that a saw blade doesnt cut corners . . .. So follow this plywood cutout as shown above. You can ask your Home Depot to make the rip cuts and then take the strips home - thats what I do to fit everything in my car. Start by ripping 22 off of the plywood. From this piece, you will cut yoru top, bottom and sides. Then from the remaining piece, cut 15 1/4 off of it, approximately 26 wide, as shown in the diagram. You will cut your drawer faces from these pieces. Finally, rip the remaining plywood piece into one 11 1/2 wide strip and two 6 wide strips. If you are using plywood for the footer and not 1x2s, rip the remaining scrap into a 1 1/2 wide strip.. Cut out all ...

BACKGROUND: Household air pollution from burning biomass fuel is increasingly recognised as a major global health concern. Biomass smoke is associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in Asian and Central American countries, but there are few data from Africa. METHODS: We hypothesised that reported wood smoke as compared to charcoal smoke exposure would be associated with a reduction in forced expiratory volume in 1 second in Malawian adults. Volunteers from urban and rural locations performed spirometry and completed a questionnaire assessing lifestyle, including smoke exposure and symptoms. RESULTS: In total, 374 adults were recruited; 61% were female; 160 cooked using charcoal and 174 used wood. Individuals who used wood as their main domestic fuel had significantly worse lung function than those who used charcoal. Significant factors associated with impaired lung function in the multivariate model were age, sex, height, wood smoke exposure, poverty, smoking and previous ...
An assessment of the regional physical availability of woody biomass as an energy feedstock in the U.S. Northern Region conducted by MU Department of Forestry and US Forest Service researchers is the central article featured in the May issue of the Journal of Forestry. The article highlights the potential of woody biomass to produce power in combination with conservation goals. It also stresses the limitations of woody biomass energy utilization stemming from its spatial dispersion and low energy density. Wood energy currently accounts for about 22% of the renewable energy generated in the US. Findings from this assessment indicate that a maximum of 19% of current coal-based electricity consumption in the Northern Region could potentially be produced with woody biomass from timberland without jeopardizing the forest resource.. The article titled Regional Assessment of Woody Biomass Physical Availability as an Energy Feedstock for Combined Combustion in the US Northern Region authored by ...

Last week, EPA released two new proposed rules to set and certify formaldehyde emissions standards in wood products. EPA developed the rules to implement the Formaldehyde Standards for Composite Wood Products Act (the Act), which added Title VI to the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). The proposed rules would apply to domestic and imported hardwood plywood, medium-density fiberboard, particleboard, and finished goods - such as furniture - containing such products.. The emissions standards are established by the Act and match the limits already in place in California for wood products sold in the state. EPAs proposed rules are designed to align with Californias program, but differ in how laminated products are defined and regulated. The proposal exempts laminated products in which a wood veneer is attached to a compliant and certified platform using a [no-added formaldehyde-based] resin.. The first proposed rule [PDF] requires that all wood products made in or imported into the U.S. be ...

The Canadian boreal forest is largely represented by mixed wood forests of white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss) and trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx). In this study, a total of 300 trees originating from three sites composed of trembling aspen and white spruce with varying compositions were investigated for wood quality traits: one site was composed mainly of aspen, one mainly of spruce and a third was a mixed site. Four wood quality traits were examined: wood density, microfibril angle (MFA), fibre characteristics, and cell wall chemistry. Social classes were also determined for each site in an attempt to provide a more in-depth comparison. Wood density showed little variation among sites for both species, with only significant differences occurring between social classes. The aspen site showed statistically lower MFAs than the aspen from the mixed site, however, no differences were observed when comparing spruce. Fibre characteristics were higher in the pure species sites for both
A large amount of poplar plywood is now being imported into Japan from China, and as a result, formaldehyde emitted from this plywood represents an undesirable chemical that must be controlled using a chemical catching agent. The aim of this study is to find an approach to reduce the formaldehyde emission of poplar plywood using thermal treatment without employing any chemicals. The experimental results obtained show that heating veneer sheets in the temperature range of 150 °C to 170 °C effectively reduced the formaldehyde emission of plywood, without diminishing the mechanical properties of the veneer. By applying Langmuirs theory and Hailwood-Horrobin theory to the adsorption isotherm obtained in this study, the relationship between the formaldehyde emission of plywood and the adsorption properties of veneer as a material is discussed. When veneer sheets were heated in the temperature range of 150 °C to 170 °C, the amount of hydrated water (monomolecular layer) decreased slightly and that of
Organic gases emitted during the flaming phase of residential wood combustion are characterized individually and by functionality using proton transfer reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The evolution of the organic gases is monitored during photochemical aging. Primary gaseous emissions are dominated by oxygenated species (e.g., acetic acid, acetaldehyde, phenol and methanol), many of which have deleterious health effects and play an important role in atmospheric processes such as secondary organic aerosol formation and ozone production. Residential wood combustion emissions differ considerably from open biomass burning in both absolute magnitude and relative composition. Ratios of acetonitrile, a potential biomass burning marker, to CO are considerably lower (∼ 0.09 pptv ppbv-1) than those observed in air masses influenced by open burning (∼ 1-2 pptv ppbv-1), which may make differentiation from background levels difficult, even in regions heavily impacted by residential wood ...

The three main components of wood, namely, cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin, can be used in various areas. However, since lignin covalently crosslinks with wood polysaccharides creating networks that is an obstacle for extraction, direct extraction of different wood components in high yield is not an easy matter. One potential approach to overcome such obstacles is to treat the wood with specific enzymes that degrade the networks by specific catalysis. However, the structure of wood is so compact that the penetration of the wood fibers by large enzyme molecules is hindered. Thus, the pretreatment of wood prior to the application of enzymes is necessary, for opening the structure.. One pretreatment method that was performed in this thesis is based on kraft pulping, which is a well-established and industrialized technique. For untreated wood, the wood fibers cannot be attacked by the enzymes. A relatively mild pretreatment was sufficient for wood polysaccharides hydrolyzed by a culture ...
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agencys final amended formaldehyde rules are now official. Structural plywood, oriented strand board (OSB) and other structural engineered wood products remain exempt from the EPA TSCA Title VI rules on formaldehyde emissions from composite wood products. The exemption includes all structural wood products manufactured with moisture resistant adhesives for construction and industrial applications, such as structural plywood, OSB, wood I-joists, laminated veneer lumber and glued-laminated timber. These products are manufactured using low emitting, moisture-resistant adhesives, per the applicable product standards and building codes that govern them.. Products marked with the APA Mark of Quality are exempt from the regulation because the APA trademark is used only on structural engineered wood products and not on particleboard, medium density fiberboard (MDF) or decorative hardwood plywood regulated by the EPA rules. In instances where unmarked structural ...
A wood enhancement agent treated engineered wood product. The wood enhancement agent typically includes at least one of a preservative, a water repellant, a fungicide, an insecticide, a stabilizing agent, wax, an ultra-violet light inhibitor, and combinations thereof, and may also include an antioxidant. The wood enhancement agent is incorporated into the engineered wood product during a billet making process or after forming the billet. The wood enhancement agent may be applied simultaneously with a bonding agent or at a later time, for example applied to a scrim log mat during a pre-press process or inside a steam press chamber. Alternatively, the wood enhancement agent may be applied to a warm billet after steam press, or to a reheated billet, by dipping, spraying, or flood coating the billet, or by diffusion, vacuum impregnation, pressure, or a combination thereof.
Pressure-treated wood impregnated with chromated copper arsenate (CCA) - often with a greenish tint - was widely used for decks and porches prior to its being discontinued for residential use in 2003-2004. Since treated wood has a long lifespan, there is still plenty of CCA pressure-treated wood surrounding residences, prompting caution due to its arsenic content. Three species of true firs in the Pacific Northwest--Abies gran-dis, grand fir; A. amabilis, Pacific silver fir; and A. lasiocarpa, subalpine fir--are severely damaged or killed by an imported insect pest, the balsam woolly aphid (Chermes (Adelges) piceae Ratz.), Infestations of this insect cause abnormalities in the wood and, in some cases, result in death of the tree. Wood samples were collected from five infested and five noninfested trees of each of the three species. Cross, radial, and tangential sections were taken from the wood samples, and samples were also macerated to separate the cells. Measurements were made of four anatomical characteristics: cell wall thickness, cell width, fibril angle, and tracheid length. Measurements were made of wood that was produced before infestation of the tree, wood of the same tree that was produced after infestation, and wood of noninfested trees. Wood produced after infestation in all three species is like compression wood in that the percentage of ...
Termites. They are every homeowners biggest fear. While subterranean termites can cause more damage to a structure more quickly, drywood termites can be just as dangerous to a building. These little insects can do some serious harm to a building before you are even aware that you have an infestation. So, when you discover a drywood termite infestation, take immediate extermination measures.. All About Drywood Termites. Drywood termites distinguish themselves from subterranean termites in quite a few ways. The most obvious is that they do not need moisture and soil to survive. Instead of making their nests in the ground, drywood termites prefer structural wood found above ground. They love to attack wooden fences, window frames, outdoor furniture, and door frames. Drywood termites are also only found in the hottest climates in the most southern part of the United States, while subterranean termites can be found in most US states.. Since drywood termite nests are built completely inside wood, it ...

Genetic variation in wood density, microfibril angle (MFA), wood stiffness (MOE), height, diameter and volume was investigated in a 26-year-old Norway spruce [(Picea abies (L.) Karst.] clonal trial in southern Sweden. Wood quality measurements were performed on 10 mm increment cores using SilviScan. For MFA, mean values of annual rings showed the highest value (30°) at ring 2 counting from the pith, followed by a steep decrease and a gradual stabilization around ring 12 at approximately 14°. MOE showed a monotonic increase from 5 GPa to 14 GPa when moving from pith to bark. High broad-sense heritability values were found for wood density (0.48), MFA (0.41) and MOE (0.50). All growth traits displayed heritability values of similar magnitudes as reported in earlier studies. The generally high age-age correlations between different sections of the wood cores suggested that early selection for wood quality traits would be successful. Owing to unfavorable genetic correlations between volume and ...

The use of renewable biomass for production of heat and electricity plays an important role in the circular economy. Degradation of wood biomass to produce heat is a clean and novel process proposed as an alternative to wood burning, and could be used for various heating applications. So far, wood degradation has mostly been studied at ambient temperatures. However, the process needs to occur at elevated temperatures (40-55 °C) to produce useable heat. Our objective was to study wood degradation at elevated temperatures for its potential application on heat production. Two (a thermotolerant and a thermophilic) fungi with different degradation strategies were chosen: lignin-degrading Phanerochaete chrysosporium and cellulose-degrading Chaetomium thermophilum. Each fungus was inoculated on nonsterile and sterile birch woodblocks to, respectively, study their wood degradation activity with and without natural biota (i.e., microorganisms naturally present in wood). The highest wood decay rates were ...

The white-rot Agaricomycetes species Phlebia radiata is an efficient wood-decaying fungus degrading all wood components, including cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. We cultivated P. radiata in solid state cultures on spruce wood, and extended the experiment to 6 weeks to gain more knowledge on the time-scale dynamics of protein expression upon growth and wood decay. Total proteome and transcriptome of P. radiata were analyzed by peptide LC-MS/MS and RNA sequencing at specific time points to study the enzymatic machinery on the fungus natural growth substrate. According to proteomics analyses, several CAZy oxidoreductase class-II peroxidases with glyoxal and alcohol oxidases were the most abundant proteins produced on wood together with enzymes important for cellulose utilization, such as GH7 and GH6 cellobiohydrolases. Transcriptome additionally displayed expression of multiple AA9 lytic polysaccharide monooxygenases indicative of oxidative cleavage of wood carbohydrate polymers. Large differences
Scientists test how well a piece of plywood or product will perform in a real-life situation by putting the product through several wet-dry cycles to mimic outdoor conditions. Wood swells when wet and contracts when dry, testing the strength of the wood-adhesive bond. While changes like these are visible to the naked eye, observing these changes at smaller scales requires advanced imaging tools, such as X-ray computed tomography, X-ray fluorescence microscopy, and small angle neutron scattering to study the way the adhesive flows into air spaces in the wood structure, then enters cell walls, especially beneath the woods surface.. Researchers found that smaller adhesive molecules are more effective than larger molecules at entering the cell walls and minimizing the effects of moisture on the properties of the wood nearest the bond line. Press Release issued Apr 25, 2019: Glycerol ester of wood rosin forms with complex mixture of tri- and diglycerol esters of resin acids extracted from wood rosin. Glycerol ester of wood rosin manifest with esterification of pale wood rosin with food grade glycerol. The only rosin is processed by the solvent extraction of aged pine stumps and subsequent a liquid-liquid solvent refining process. The solvent is composed of approximately 90% resin acids and 10% neutrals (non-acidic compounds). Apart from being stabilizer, glycerol ester of wood rosin also helps oil to remain in suspension when blended with water. With increase in usage of glycerol ester of wood rosin in various commodities will eventually fuel the demand of glycerol ester of wood rosin and thus glycerol ester of wood rosin market can be expected to grow with a healthy CAGR over the forecast period.
Structural Changes to Aspen Wood Lignin during Autohydrolysis Pretreatment. Peng Wang,a Yingjuan Fu,a,* Zhiyong Shao,a Fengshan Zhang,b and Menghua Qin a,b,c,*. Aspen wood was subjected to autohydrolysis as a pre-treatment to characterize the structural changes occurring in lignin fractions during the pre-treatment process. Milled wood lignin (MWL) was isolated from both the native aspen wood and hydrolyzed wood chips, and its structural features were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), quantitative 13C, two-dimensional heteronuclear single quantum coherence (2D HSQC), and 31P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopies, gel permeation chromatography/multi-angle laser light scattering (GPC-MALLS), and thermal analysis. The lignin remaining in the hydrolyzed wood chips revealed more phenolic OH groups, fewer aliphatic OH groups, higher syringyl/guaiacyl ratios (S/G), higher molecular weights, and narrower polydispersities than the native lignin of aspen wood. The inter-unit ...

Big Wood is coming. Dont say we didnt warn you.. There is no secret that we are utterly obsessed with Brouwers Cafes Big Wood beer festival. Last year, we launched this site in the midst of Big Wood 2009. This year, we are giving you a 3 week heads up.. Big Wood will be held on December 2, 2010. If I remember correctly (but I might stand corrected), Big Wood begins in the afternoon, sometime around 4 PM. The event is officially one day, but the beers will pour for several days afterwards.. What is Big Wood? Guess. Big Wood showcases wood-aged beers on more than 40 taps. Typically, you will see a plethora of massive scale beers pouring, including some of the most complex beers you will ever taste.. Last year - Hair of the Dog dominated. From beer nerds to beer newbs, Hair of the Dog shocked and awed the crowd. This is a male Wood Cockroach, and it will not infest your home, but they are attracted to lights. We suspect it is a Pennsylvania Wood Cockroach, Parcoblatta pennsylvanica, based on this BugGuide image. According to the Colonial Pest Control Blog: You may have already figured out that you are more likely to be visited by wood roaches if you live in a wooded area. These cockroaches are common in woods where they feed on decaying organic matter. Around homes, wood roaches can sometimes be found in gutters, potted plants, under cedar shake or other wood siding, or in firewood. Wood cockroaches are seldom seen except during their mating season which lasts from late May into June in our area. ...
Responding to growing interest in the use of woody biomass as a clean, carbon-neutral and renewable energy source, SFR last year produced a policy report for the Washington State Legislature, Wood to Energy in Washington: Imperatives, opportunities and obstacles to progress. The report indentified three imperatives driving energy policy decisions: climate change mitigation, energy independence and sustainability. Now Washingtons resource-dependent communities are eying woody biomass as a means to improve the economics of managing forestlands and to help revive the areas forest products industry. Green energy production from woody biomass-is it the answer? Well, maybe, says John Calhoun, Director of the Olympic Natural Resources Center (ONRC) in Forks, Wash., one of SFRs interdisciplinary research and education centers. ONRC is currently devoting a considerable portion of its research resources to help answer this question. In January 2009, ONRC was asked by the Clallam County Economic ...
Genotypical effects on wood formation in aspen (Populus tremula x tremuloides) have been studied at morphological, ultrastructural and micro-distributional levels. To characterize transgenically in-duced modifications, light-, fluorescence-, UV-, scanning- and transmission electron microscopy have been applied complement-ed by immunolabeling, histochemistry, multivariate statistics and image analysis. Tension wood formation in aspen has also been studied with a focus on xyloglucan micro-distribution. To perform quantitative screeing of wood immunofluorescenc, a novel image analysis protocol was developed and applied. The protocol performs immuno-signal isolation to calculate labeling ra-tio, termed coverage. Coverage is proportional to epitope avail-ability, in relation to immunoprobe performance. The protocol was shown to perform favorably compared to operator supervised analysis and quantification. Morphological characterization of the twelve genotypes showed significant modifications only for ...

The composition and structure of beetle clusters living in rotting birch wood in Kampinos National Park was investigated. Photoeclectors were used to remove beetles from collected wood samples. Ten different research plots, each corresponding to a different forest type, were sampled every month over a 1-year period. A collection of 3256 beetles from 37 families comprising 206 species was amassed during the study. The collected beetles were divided into trophic families, species rareness, and constancy and site fidelity classes. At the more fertile sites, species only able to live on highly-decayed wood were collected (F3), also species facultatively able to live on either dying trees or decaying wood (F1), species that do not live on decayed wood (F0) and other rare species. Trophic group of carnivores (Z) provided most species on more fertile sites. At coniferous forest sites, as well as mixed deciduous forest sites, most individuals collected belonged to mycophagous and myxomycophagous trophic ...
Chapter 2: Structure of Wood== [[Image:Cross section white oak tree trunk.png, thumb,Fig 1: Cross section of a white oak tree trunk]] The fibrous nature of wood strongly influences how it is used. Specifically, wood is composed mostly of hollow, elongate, spindle-shaped cells that are arranged parallel to each other along the trunk of a tree. When lumber is cut from the tree, the characteristics of these fibrous cells and their arrangement affects such properties as strength and shrinkage, as well as grain and pattern of wood. ,br> A brief description of some elements of anatomical structure are given in this chapter. ,br> Figure 1 shows the cross section of a white oak tree trunk. The labels represent: A, Cambium layer Imicroscopic) is inside inner bark and forms wood and bark cells. B, Inner bark is moist. soft, and contains living tissue. Carries prepared food from leaves to all growing parts of tree. C, Outer bark containing corky layers is composed of dry dead tissue. Gives general ...

At follow-up, workers in intervention relative to comparison businesses reported greater awareness, increases in stage of readiness, and ...
The objective of this research was to improve the fire-retardant properties of wood in one treatment using a phosphorus pentoxide-amine system. Phosphorus pentoxide and 16 amines including alkyl, halophenyl, and phenyl amines were compounded in N,N-dimethylformamide and the resulting solutions containing phosphoramides were reacted with wood. The characteristics of phosphoramide-reacted wood were analyzed by FTIR, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, and elemental analysis. Fire retardancy of phosphoramide-reacted woods was evaluated by DSC and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). DSC demonstrated that the modification can lower the onset of an endotherm and decrease the heat of combustion and heat flow. TGA showed that most of the phosphoramide-reacted woods had higher char yields than that of wood impregnated with diammonium phosphate. ...
Wood storks feed on small to medium-sized fish, crayfish, amphibians, and reptiles. Their hunting technique is unique as they will move their partially opened bill through water, snapping up prey when the prey comes in contact with the bill.. The wood stork is the only species of stork that breeds in the U.S. Wood storks are very social in nesting habitats, as they are often seen nesting in large colonies of 100-500 nests. Colonies in South Florida form late November to early March, while wood storks in Central and North Florida form colonies from February to March (Florida Natural Areas Inventory 2001). After copulation, males begin gathering twigs for constructing nests (Coulter et al. 1999). Wood stork nests are primarily built in trees that stand in water (U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service 1999). In Florida, wood storks are capable of laying eggs from October to June (Rodgers 1990). Females lay a single clutch of two to five eggs per season (U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service 1999). The average ...

The information on this site is taken from the bookWoods Prairie Cemetery. The history of Woods Prairie Cemetery goes back to the very beginning of the settlement of Texas. Zadock Woods came to Texas in 1823 and went back to Tray Missouri in 1824 and brought his family back to what would become Fayette County, Texas. He was married to Minerva Cottle and they had 5 children who came to Texas with them. Minerva, Montreville, Norman B., Henry Gonzales and Leander. He built a fort at Woods Prairie in 1828 on his son Montrevilles land. It was the settlers protection against the still marauding Indians. The last Indian threat was the Battle of Plum Creek in 1840. The next threat was from Mexico. Many of the men from Woods Prairie joined a company to fight the Mexicans had invaded Texas. Zadock Woods was an old man but joined anyway. He and 35 others were killed in the Dawson Creek Massacre. They were later buried on Monument Hill. Orbital hand sanders are extensively used in woodworking processes. The dust from these sanders is generally not controlled although some are equipped with dust removal capabilities. However, even the sanders having dust removal do not effectively control the wood dust generated by the sanding operation. Therefore, a new control approach was developed. A Dust Control Plenum was designed and tested on an orbital sander.(See ILLUSTRATION) The plenum fits between the sanding pad and the sander body and has a series of exhaust slots along its edges. An exhaust connection on the top of the sander pad connects the plenum with a vacuum source. Laboratory tests show that the plenum reduces wood dust emissions by approximately 90 percent. The plenum does not interfere with the operators activities, requires no special maintenance, is inexpensive to operate, and can be used on any sander, pneumatically or electrically powered. This dust control device is not currently commercially available. Call NIOSH ...
