Womens earnings are essential to economic security for the majority of families in Washington State, where women comprise about half of all workers. But over the past two decades, forward progress for women in the workforce has largely stalled. Women continue to earn far less than men. And workplace standards remain mired in outdated assumptions that most workers are men and most families have a full-time caregiver at home. Our children, families, businesses, and communities all pay the price for our failure to step up to the public policy needs of todays working women.
A study funded by the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR).. Working women with disabilities (WWD) face disadvantages compared to working men with and without disabilities. Studies show the average WWD is paid only 83% as much as a working man with a disability and 67% as much as a working man without a disability. Negative attitudes and stereotypes about WWD may contribute to these disadvantages. Past research has found that both women and people with disabilities may be judged as weak, dependent, or incapable by others. WWD may find it challenging to prove their capabilities to coworkers and supervisors, as a result of being both female and people with disabilities. Because of this, they may struggle with decisions regarding whether, and when, to disclose their disability or request accommodations in the workplace. In a recent NIDILRR-funded study, researchers asked WWD to describe their experiences in disclosing disabilities and receiving ...

My testimony starts way back in the 80s when I was drinking and drugging and living on the streets. I went to jail was led to Jesus through a prison ministry missionary and my life has never been the same since. I almost went to prison for a minimum of 5 years. Instead I coppped to a drug court program for a year. I did very well with Jesus on my side! I am NOT a recovering addict! I am a Delivered addict! Once I gave my life to Jesus He took all desires for drugs and alcohol away from me! Serious! There is no other way I could of gotten off the crack by myself!! I subscribed to Christian Working Woman when I got a job and it has helped me out tremendously. I especially love the Jesus at work articles. I have actually used a few of the suggestions! What to do at work. I proclaim at work that I am a Christian and that helps me to be accountable. Someone is always watching to see if I act like a Christian. I dont always but Jesus knows my heart and I do try. The above picture is of me and ...

August is breastfeeding month, with the first week bringing awareness to the importance of breastfeeding for child development worldwide. I wanted to take this opportunity to highlight the choices around breastfeeding as well as all the other changes and adaptations working moms must make. The Today Show wrote a great article about mothers who have chosen to and chosen not to breastfeed.. Working mothers returning to the office after birth face some unique challenges. Office buildings are often out of date and do not include spaces designed for pumping. In addition to finding time to breastfeed, they must also work with child care hours, requiring a more flexible work schedule. Whatever your unique challenges, know that you are not alone.. Breast Feeding. Before returning to work, check out his helpful guide from Working Mother. They outline the need to plan ahead by building your milk supply, getting your baby used to feeding from the bottle, speaking with your employer about your needs, ...
Abstract When parents divorce, children are not always understand it. In addition, the children said they were proud of their working mothers, who provided positive role models, taught them problem-solving and continued to be mentors long into adulthood. Nearly three-quarters of mothers work outside the home. Parents argue that the media repetitively advertises junk food and things that may damage a childs health; and they are forced to counter the culture, which means to stop the messages that the media is trying to deliver to their children. Furthermore, the television advertisements can bring positive effects on the kids knowledge about everyday lives, and different aspects of such influence children positively. This omission can lead to problems with the childs perception of daily life. As times change, families do as well. Working mothers have negative effects on their young children. There are often cases when the child needs the protection of the parents and both of them are ...
Background: Research has suggested that gender is related to perceptions of work-family conflict (WFC) and an underlying assumption is that interference of paid work with family life will burden women more than men. There is, however, mixed evidence as to whether men and women report different levels of WFC. Even less studies investigate gender differences in health outcomes of WFC. Also the number of longitudinal studies in this field is low. METHODS: Based on the Swedish Longitudinal Occupational Survey of Health, we prospectively examined the effects of WFC on three different health measures representing a wide spectrum off ill health (i.e. self-rated health, emotional exhaustion and problem drinking). Logistic regression analyses were used to analyse multivariate associations between WFC in 2008 and health 2 years later. RESULTS: The results show that WFC was associated with an increased risk of emotional exhaustion among both men and women. Gender differences are suggested as WFC was ...
it is misleading to talk of womens entry into the workforce. Besides formal employment, women have always worked in the home, looking after children, cleaning or cooking, but because this is unpaid, it is not counted in the official statistics. To some extent, the increase in female paid employment has meant fewer hours of unpaid housework. However, the value of housework has fallen by much less than the time spent on it, because of the increased productivity afforded by dishwashers, washing machines and so forth. Paid nannies and cleaners employed by working women now also do some work that used to belong in the non-market economy.. Nevertheless, most working women are still responsible for the bulk of chores in their homes. In developed economies, women produce just under 40% of official GDP. But if the worth of housework is added (valuing the hours worked at the average wage rates of a home help or a nanny) then women probably produce slightly more than half of total output.. The increase ...

Working women whose jobs require more than forty hours a week take longer to conceive a child even when they are trying hard to do so. There is nothing ethically wrong with a woman working at a job for more than forty hours a week. Many women have no real choice. We all need income in order to live. But our society has tried to pretend that there are no costs to any choice that makes a woman more empowered. And while there is nothing wrong with working women, that doesnt mean there arent Read more […]. ...
Objective: To know the status of gender discrimination at work place against employed women, if any. Pay equity and transparency are bread and butter issues for working women; when they come together to negotiate collectively for fair wages and important benefits, like access to health insurance and paid leave, they can better support their families. (Indeed, women in unions experience a smaller wage gap than women without a union voice).. Since the passage of the EPA, the gender wage gap has narrowed, but it persists. Women overall typically are paid 80 cents for every dollar paid to their male counterparts, and that number has barely changed in the past 10 years. And the gap is even larger when you compare the earnings of women of color to white men.. Clearly, we still have much to do to ensure pay equity, and theres been some progress, thanks to tireless working women and their allies across the country. For instance, in the past two years, more than half the states have introduced or passed their own remedies to increase pay transparency, strengthen employer accountability and empower ...

Women love shopping especially those working women who need to have their things stylish and fashionable even at work. I have observed this thing as when theres a mall wide sale you can see a lot of them coming from the office dropping by the malls to buy their working accessories like shoes, bags and other needed things. My Mom used to tell us that working womens investment in working are shoes, bags and clothes so we must not deprive ourselves from buying those things when we need them though we must also consider a justifiable budget because if you splurge on a shopping spree its not anymore a necessity but a luxury. ...

The findings were strongest among sixth graders, the oldest children for whom data was studied. Sixth graders are typically 11 years old.. Changes in the childrens physical activity, time spent unsupervised or watching television did not explain the link between maternal employment and childrens BMI, the study says.. Moreover, a mother working odd hours or overnight was not significantly associated with their childrens BMI.. The researchers were unable to clearly explain the findings but theorized that because working mothers have little time to shop for healthy food and prepare meals, they and their children eat more fast- and packaged foods, which tend to be high in fat and calories.. Childhood obesity in the United States has tripled in 30 years.. Today, one in three US kids is overweight or obese, meaning they are more likely than their normal-weight counterparts to grow up to be obese adults and suffer from obesity-related conditions including diabetes, cardiovascular disease and fatty ...

With Mothers Day having just passed, we thought it was timely (and somewhat interesting) to consider how countries around the world deal with maternity leave. More specifically, this Fridays data viz describes the duration of maternity leave granted to new moms, the proportion of their wages covered during this period, and the full wage coverage equivalent for countries around the world (the latter measure is calculated by multiplying the number of weeks of maternity leave permitted by the percentage of wages that are covered during that period).. Perhaps not surprisingly, Sweden tops the list, with 55 weeks of full wage coverage for new mothers. Close behind Sweden were a number of countries that did surprise us, including Croatia, Serbia, and Cambodia. Canada ranks toward the bottom end of the spectrum, at 9 weeks, with the United States bringing up the rear with no coverage.. We hope you enjoy poking around in this latest viz. ...

Deeply involved in social justice work, Eleanor Roosevelt believed strongly that women deserved a place at the table when it came to politics. Prior to her husbands presidency, she worked with and helped lead a number of womens groups, including the International Congress of Working Women, the Womans Trade Union League and the Womens International League of Peace and Freedom. After the League of Women Voters was founded in 1920 - the same year that Franklin D. Roosevelt ran for Vice President - she helped establish its policy agenda. As the Leagues Vice President of Legislative Affairs, she lobbied for reforms in Congress and worked tirelessly to strengthen womens role in politics, helping mobilize women voters through the Leagues nonpartisan training and lobbying work. Forget the fancy brunches, chocolates and flowers for a moment. Mothers Day is the perfect time to call attention to a persistent workplace issue: pregnancy discrimination.. In this country, anchored by adoration for Mom and apple pie, its almost unfathomable that discrimination against expectant mothers even exists. It is illegal under federal and state laws to discriminate against a working woman because shes pregnant or has just given birth. Still, of the various types of workplace discrimination, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission reports the largest rate of increase is in pregnancy discrimination charges.. While youre out perusing the Mothers Day cards, consider this: The number of pregnancy discrimination charges received by the EEOC increased from 3,387 cases in 1992 to 5,587 cases in 2007 - a jump of 65 percent. According to figures released in March, the EEOC received a record 6,285 complaints of pregnancy discrimination in 2008 and officials say they expect pregnancy ...

Bristol-based mutual insurer National Friendly has seen a lot of change in its 150 year history. Originally it provided sickness benefits to working men, but also, uniquely among friendly societies at the time, it welcomed working women and children too.. This pioneering stance - when poverty, poor education, poor working conditions, inequality and poor health were huge social issues of the day - was long before any State provision. Today National Friendly is as enthusiastic about getting involved in projects which help Bristols community. The organisation has stayed close to its roots, something embraced with passion by the current management.. As a result, it has a unique insight and view into the pressures facing local people, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic, which has ripped through education, the disadvantaged, the vulnerable and the charities which exist to try and help these groups.. National Friendly has been a long-term partner of Ablaze, a charity which exists to tackle ...
The only way to end prostitution, Kollontai argued, was to struggle against the conditions that compelled women to find prostitution a necessary means of subsistence. Kollontai put forth a complex, materialist understanding of this struggle. The workers revolution in Russia, she argued, had shattered the basis of capitalism and with it the main sources of prostitution-private property and the policy of strengthening of the family (at least in its first few years), but this was not enough. Other factors she insisted, were still in force. Homelessness, neglect, bad housing conditions, loneliness and low wages for women are still with us...These and other economic and social conditions lead women to prostitute their bodies (265). Thus, as Kollontai made very clear, to struggle against prostitution chiefly means to struggle against these conditions (266). For as the first All-Russian Congress of Peasant and Working Woman stated, A woman of the Soviet labour republic is a free citizen ...
These findings appear in the September 1 issue of the journal SLEEP.. The results were computed from a national sampling of 7,428 employees, part of the larger American Insomnia Study, which was led by Kessler and funded by Sanofi-Aventis Groupe. Participants were asked about sleep habits and work performance, among other things. Previous estimates have relied on smaller consumer panels and on medical and pharmacy databases focused on treated insomnia patients, the study said.. The estimated prevalence of insomnia in the AIS sample was 23.2 percent among employees. Insomnia also was found to be significantly lower (14.3 percent) among workers age 65 and older, and higher among working women (27.1 percent) than working men (19.7 percent). Clinical sleep medicine experts independently evaluated a subsample of AIS respondents and confirmed the accuracy of those estimates.. Kessler said accurate estimates on the costs of insomnia in the workplace might justify the implementation of screening and ...

Rising health awareness among the parents about the development of the baby and rising instances of malnutrition are the major growth-inducing factors for the market. An increase in the number of working women and the growing need for portable nutritious food for their babies has further encouraged the market growth. Further, several mothers are unable to breastfeed their baby due to insufficient production of milk resulting from breast reduction surgery, having multiple kids or giving birth at a later age. This has facilitated the demand for baby food and infant formula. Moreover, organic baby foods have garnered much attention in recent years as they are free from pesticides and chemicals. Owing to this, parents are ready to spend more for the wellbeing of their baby, thereby increasing the demand for the products globally. According to the report, the market is expected to reach a value of around US$ 65 Billion by 2022, exhibiting a CAGR of more than 5% during 2017-2022.. Request a free ...
Coming back to Everything and Nothing, what makes the book great is the fact most people can relate to it, which makes the characters believable. I dont have a husband and two kids, but I can understand the frustration depicted excellently throughout of working so hard you feel like everything else in your life is out of control. And thats ok for a while because you ride on the wave of euphoria your job brings you (hopefully, as long as youre doing something you like!) but pretty soon the cracks start to show. You miss an event. You forget a birthday, or an anniversary. You have to cancel a holiday because youre just too busy... In essence, you start sacrificing the bits of your life that are real and tangible, yet you have no time to step back and take a long, hard look at yourself from the outside looking in. Reminds me of the Adam Sandler movie Click. Also the dilemma every working woman faces when theyve had a child - to go back to work or not. The guilt, the shame, the unknown. The ...
Infant formula is one of the fastest growing markets in the dairy sector, particularly China (with the largest growth rate), Eastern Europe, Middle East and Latin America. The development of the market is linked with the economic growth of those countries and the growing number of working women.. Although it is known and accepted that the ideal food for new born infants is their mothers milk, due to the fact it enhances the immune system and is hypoallergenic, it is sometimes not possible to provide this and infant formula has to be used. However, this is sometimes not as simple as it first sounds…. The main allergen in cows milk protein is beta-lactoglobulin. Beta-lactoglobulin is the most abundant protein in whey accounting for 50% of the total protein. Although the incidence of allergies to cows milk protein are low, many infant formula manufacturers are increasingly adding whey proteins to infant formula which could potentially increase problems such as severe life threatening allergies ...
Rise in disposable income of middle class consumers and the demand for quick bites in emerging economies such as China and India are expected to drive the demand for fast food. In addition, increasing number of working women and their changing lifestyles is another factor contributing to the growth of this market. However, fast food contains high amounts of trans-fats and saturated fats which consequently hamper human health as they lack nutritional value. This factor is expected to have an adverse effect on the growth of the market. Thus, an amplifying demand for healthy fast food such as salads is expected to open the new opportunities for the fast food market. Fast food is expected to rapidly gain market in Asia Pacific and Europe due to its affordability, easy accessibility and huge investment in promotional activities by leading players of the industry. Currently, burgers constitute the largest fast food segment and are expected to maintain their escalation in the upcoming years ...

Over the past two decades, breast conserving therapy (BCT) has become a major treatment modality for Stage I and II breast carcinoma. The major advantages of breast conserving therapy are superior cosmetic outcome and the reduced emotional and psychological trauma afforded by this procedure compared with conventional mastectomy. The principal disadvantage of BCT is its more complex and prolonged treatment regimen requiring approximately 6 weeks of external beam radiation therapy that poses problems for some patients such as the working woman, elderly patients, and those who live at a significant distance from a treatment center. These factors, along with the patients geographic location, result in a smaller fraction of the patients who currently meet eligibility criteria for BCT actually receiving it, despite its cosmetic and probable psychological advantages. The logistical problems of BCT are primarily related to the protracted course of external beam radiation therapy to the whole breast. ...

This is based on the fact that the child should be able to control bowel and bladder muscles - an ability that is a result of proper growth and development. ... On the other hand, a Palestinian working woman may start toilet training later, maybe around age 2. In general, children have daytime bladder control by about age 4. But by the turn of the millennium, the number of toddlers who were potty trained at age two-that is, 6 months later than those kids in the 1957 statistic-was only 4 percent. Remember that potty-training is an important phase for your little one and he needs to be prepared both physically and emotionally for it. Finally, Jensen finds that the ideal age to potty train is 22 months. Some are concerned that they have started too early, others are afraid that they are too late and are wondering what the effects may be. However, I am a working woman with a busy life and so, especially in the mornings, I have to use stuff that is already packaged. To wit, bread and sardines have become one of my favourite breakfast items. Ever since growing up in Jamaica, I have always loved bread and so as I was now deprived from eating white hardough bread hot from the ovens of Captains Bakery slathered with lots of butter, I had to find a bread that would not only fill me up but be healthy as well. Enter Rudis whole range of breads. They are not the fanciest and they are certainly not the cheapest but they taste good and they do what they are supposed to do. My favourite from this line is their Honey Sweet Whole Wheat, their Seeded bread as well as the regular Whole Wheat bread. I have also tried their gluten free burger buns which are absolutely delicious. You can find them in the frozen food aisle in the supermarkets. ...
Drinking With MenA MemoirBy Rosie Schaap(Riverhead; 272 pages; $26.95)As the writer of the New York Times Drink column, Rosie Schaap has a voice thats authoritative and smooth; it goes down like your better whiskey (for Schaap, this would be Jameson). Launched in October 2011, the column is a curious one, both firmly of the moment - specifically the New York moment - and retro in tone, speaking to that Mad Men era when cocktails and cigarettes were the acceptable norm and the words bottled and water had not yet become joined at the hip and lip. Schaap, 42, reveals her credentials in her new memoir, Drinking With Men; she estimates she has spent a staggering 13,000 hours swilling and socializing as a regular in bars in locations that range from Dublin to Vermont but are (or were) mostly in Manhattan. In college, she had Grogans, the Pig and the Man of Kent; as a young working woman in New York she fell in with the artsy crowd at Puffys, eventually grew bored and moved on to a place called
A haircut is definitely a big deal for working women like me especially because it is a statement by itself. For example, short hair may imply a more active and adventurous personality whereas a long and well maintained hair suggests a more demure aura fit for a lady. I personally differentiate haircut from hair trim. The former is a rather radical change in the styling of the hair whether from a straight cut into layers while the latter is more maintaining the current look and concerns the removal of split ends of the hair. I do not usually get a haircut but the haircut trend 2017 has convinced me just recently. The trends include but not limited to the following styles: short or medium beach waves, shoulder-length layers, medium length highlights and wavy bob. As my aesthetics change as the trends do, I wanted to have my haircut. Besides, I have noticed numerous split ends on the tips on my hair.. Before I decided to search for the best hairdressers in Melbourne CBD area, I took time to search ...
Ann Robinson, uSwitch Director of Consumer Policy, commented: The high cost of living coupled with the often crippling cost of a mortgage means that many households today need two incomes to get by.. Unfortunately many new mothers are paying the price for this by seeing their choices taken away by the financial realities of modern life.. Sadly, very few mums have the luxury of being able to stay at home for the whole of their maternity leave and even fewer have the choice to be a stay at home mum.. Preparation is key for those planning a family - check your companys maternity policy, calculate how much you will need to survive, save money in readiness and cut down on household bills and unnecessary expenses.. By keeping a tight lid on your household budget hopefully you will remember your maternity leave for the right reasons and not for the financial headache and debt it can bring.. ...
Hey lovely ladies, Anyone else planning to start maternity leave earlier than they expected? I work in a busy primary school with children who have SEN/ behavioural difficulties. At 24 weeks, I am still suffering from severe sickness, low bp and now unmanagable pelvic/ back pain. I was origionally hoping to go 34/36 weeks, but with a 2 hour round commute and a physically demanding role, am debating going between 31/32 weeks? Anyone feel like they are letting their employer down or that this is too early? I dont plan on returning to work after maternity leave. Katie
I remembered how I felt when I had to return to work after a full and fun year with my son. I had feelings of guilt and sadness as I kissed and hugged him goodbye to spend the day with grandma and grandpa, before running to the bus stop for my first day of work after maternity leave. While I was on the bus, I looked at my watch and thought about what he was doing at that very moment and what his day would be like without me there. When I got to work I called home to ask how he was doing, and grandma said he is playing and having fun with grandpa. They are going to have lunch soon and then heading out to the playground afterwards. I remember asking if he cried when I left and grandma said no.. I realized at that very moment that my son was going to be fine today and all of the other days when I had to go to work.. Feelings of guilt and sadness are very common for mothers who return to work after maternity leave and these feelings are perfectly normal. Be assured that the little human being that ...

A Mothers Choice or Necessity. Never before in history have women had so many choices. One of these choices is whether to stay home with their children, or to work outside of the home. Although some mothers feel a necessity to work; others make the choice to gain employment.. This is a highly debated topic with strong opinions and emotions on both sides of the coin. To have the mother work or not work is really a personal choice that should be made by the individual family according to their own unique situations and needs.. Possible Solutions and Resources. Lead author Taryn Morrissey, an assistant professor in public administration from American University points out, The implication is not that moms leave the workforce. If that were to happen, childhood obesity would not go away at all. Morrissey also says that there are steps working parents can take to ensure their children eat properly, such as ensuring that there are always regular meal times and skipping the fast food when they ...

Maintenance Choice is a program that provides CVS Caremark PBM clients and their members the flexibility to select the most convenient way to receive maintenance medications. Regardless of whether members choose to receive their 90-day prescriptions via mail or in the store, they pay the typically lower mail co-pay, while the plan sponsor receives the typically lower mail rate.. The Maintenance Choice program is a great fit for our organization, stated Pam Weier, director of benefits for US Airways. Not only does this program allow the company to get the benefit of mail-order rates on 90-day prescriptions at a retail drug store, but, more importantly, it [also] provides a local venue for our members to pick up their medications at their convenience. Historically, members of our team who travel frequently were reluctant to use mail service for their prescriptions when their schedule didnt allow them to be home to receive it. Now that we have implemented Maintenance Choice, those same members ...

The first International Womens Day commemorated a demonstration by women workers in New York in 1857. But what established the modern celebration of International Womens Day in history, was the fire at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory in New York on 25 March 1911 that killed 146 young women workers, most of whom were immigrants. From the ashes of that tragic event, the pursuit of social justice for women and men ignited that day continues be felt around the world 100 years on. From New York, ILO On-line reports on the fire that changed everything.
The Women and Global Migration Working Group denounces violence against women in all its forms. However, we also strongly condemn the othering of perpetrators of gender-based violence, such as happened in the reporting of widespread sexual attacks and harassment of women in central Cologne, Germany, on New Years Eve 2015. In the immediate aftermath we witnessed a frighteningly xenophobic and racist reaction in the media and political commentary that led to physical attacks on migrant and refugee men in the name of protecting women.. We loudly reject racist tropes about black and Muslim men. Stereotyping, racial and religious profiling of their sexual behaviour and/or misogyny, with absolutely no evidence to suggest that migrant men are more likely than other men to commit sexually aggressive acts, is both racist and xenophobic. In Europe, the rush to protect women is being used to feed anti-immigrant and refugee sentiment and a backlash against newcomers desperately seeking refuge from war ...
Having been out of town lately, I was unable to see the Hon. Mrs. Alfred Lytteltons play, Warp and Woof, dealing with the conditions of dressmaking life in the West End shops of London; but I have hopes, judging from what I have read of it in the daily Press, that it will have served the useful purpose of making many think about a subject on which, apparently, they have never thought before. Those who have thought about it, and who have endeavoured to put their thoughts into action, have been striving for years to get more women inspectors appointed to keep a watchful eye on dressmaking establishments and on sweaters dens, have done their best to get the women workers themselves to complain (if only anonymously), and have made various attempts to organise sempstresses and dressmaking hands so as to give individuals the united strength of organised labour. An immense help and backing would be given to these efforts if the women public who employ these women workers would make a point of ...
