TY - JOUR. T1 - Marital quality and psychological adjustment to widowhood among older adults. T2 - A longitudinal analysis. AU - Carr, Deborah. AU - House, James S.. AU - Kessler, Ronald C.. AU - Nesse, Randolph. AU - Sonnega, John. AU - Wortman, Camille. PY - 2000/7. Y1 - 2000/7. N2 - Objectives. This study examined whether psychological adjustment to widowhood is affected by three aspects of marital quality - warmth, conflict, and instrumental dependence - assessed prior to the loss. Methods. The Changing Lives of Older Couples (CLOC) is a prospective study of a two-stage area probability sample of 1,532 married individuals aged 65 and older. The CLOC includes baseline data on marital quality and mental health and data on grief, anxiety, and depression collected 6, 18, and 48 months after spousal loss. Results. Widowhood was associated with elevated anxiety among those who were highly dependent on their spouses and lower levels of anxiety among those who were not dependent on their spouses. ...
Widowhood: Hope To Cope As children we start very early trying to figure out the meaning of life and death and what it all means. It starts with the simplest of questions. What does death mean? Where is heaven; and what does God look like? it takes us a while to reconcile the reality that when the people we love die, we can no longer talk to them. It is at this moment that we lose our first little bit of innocence. Then, as we grow older, we look for meaning, anywhere we can find it. When do we die? Is there a mathematical equation that will let us know so we can prepare? Then eventually we realize we have absolutely no control over death and we soothe our fears with the probability that it wont happen to us until we are much older and in a rational order. We will lose our grandparents first, then our parents and then if we are unlucky enough to outlive our spouse, we will have to embrace widowhood. However, life doesnt always work out that way and sometimes we find ourselves faced with ...
The present thesis reports four studies, two qualitative and two quantitative. Study 1 was a longitudinal follow-up of survivors from a previous study of spousal bereavement, and investigated experiences of longer term coping and adjustment. Results identified that participants used both religious and secular resources in adjustment and that those with a strong religious belief reported adjustment marked by the least difficulties. Study 2 focused on older adults with a strong Christian belief and aimed to identify the religious content and practice most important in coping with spousal bereavement. Interpretative phenomenological analysis revealed four main themes: benevolent religious cognition, Biblical assurances, religious ritual, and spiritual capital, that in different ways were related to meaning reconstruction. As religious ritual seemed important yet is under researched, Study 3 aimed to develop the first scale of its kind to measure religious ritual. A 35-item scale was developed, ...

Loneliness is not a surprising by-product of widowhood. I mean, even for the people who have never been through it, its a no-brainer. But frankly, I think that lonely is not a strong enough word.. There is a deep silence that comes with losing your spouse. And it doesnt matter if youre standing in the middle of a crowded room, you will still notice it. Its the quiet that comes when you dont have that familiar voice whispering in your ear at a wedding, Can you believe she wore that? I mean, what was she thinking? Its the missing sound of two glasses clinking together on your anniversary. Its the absence of someone breathing soundly next to you as you go to sleep at night.. Our friends are so good about trying to make sure that we know that were not alone. And we know were not friendless. We could call up any number of people if we just wanted to hang out. But we are alone. Our marriages were amputated in the prime of our lives and, for some of us, there is no prosthesis.. A lot of us, ...
The study of spousal bereavement and mortality has long been a major topic of interest for social scientists, but much remains unknown with respect to important moderating factors, such as age, follow-up duration, and geographic region. The present study examines these factors using meta-analysis. Keyword searches were conducted in multiple electronic databases, supplemented by extensive iterative hand searches. We extracted 1,377 mortality risk estimates from 123 publications, providing data on more than 500 million persons. Compared with married people, widowers had a mean hazard ratio (HR) of 1.23 (95% confidence interval (CI), 1.19-1.28) among HRs adjusted for age and additional covariates and a high subjective quality score. The mean HR was higher for men (HR, 1.27; 95% CI, 1.19-1.35) than for women (HR, 1.15; 95% CI, 1.08-1.22). A significant interaction effect was found between gender and mean age, with HRs decreasing more rapidly for men than for women as age increased. Other significant
Objectives. Elderly widows are three times as likely to live in poverty as older married people. This study investigates the gap in poverty, income, and wealth between these groups. Focus is placed on the role played by out-of-pocket medical expenditures spent on dying spouses. Methods. A national panel survey of people age 70 and older in 1993 was used. Income, poverty, wealth, and out-of-pocket expenditures were examined before and after widowhood, with comparisons made with couples not experiencing a death. Results. Forty-four percent of the difference in economic status between widow(er)s and married elderly persons was due to disparities in economic status that existed prior to widowhood. The remaining 56 was due to factors more directly related to the death of a spouse, including the loss of income and expenses associated with dying. On average, out-of-pocket medical expenditures in the final 2 years of life were equal to 30 of the couples annual income. For couples in the bottom quarter ...
Single status was associated with a higher risk of mortality than was married status for both men and women. Divorce and widowhood were associated with elevated risk for men, but not for women. These findings suggest single, divorce and widowhood status constitute potentially adverse health effects.
I had a light bulb moment, which has resulted in giving me a great deal of peace of mind. It was prompted by my reading an editorial about Sandra Bullocks current situation. The author, praised Sandras strength and resolve and added that most other people would have collapsed under the pressure. Collapsed under the pressure? What does that mean? I wish I could collapse, tune out, take a break from all of this. Remember when it was fashionable to have a nervous breakdown? Does anyone know how you go about having one because Id like to have a rest at a sanitarium. Do those places even exist anymore? Now Im kind of kidding here and kind of not. I have through the years thought about this. If indeed, it all becomes too much to bear what do people do who cant cope anymore? Im not sure if I walked into the hospital and said, I cant take it anymore that it would amount to anything. Other than trying to kill myself, I dont know of any real way to collapse. I mean, really what would come down ...
I read this post earlier and had to think about it for awhile before commenting. After some pondering, I guess the only thing I can say is that I dont really regard grief, suffering, unfairness, or what have you, in a way that differentiates between types or levels. I have a close friend whose lungs are all but destroyed from a horrible genetic lung disorder. The drugs he takes have now destroyed most of the bones in his body. He has artificial hips, which occasionally pop out of their sockets and leave him lying in agony, helpless on the ground until an ambulance can get him to an ER. The lung drug is barely working anymore. He lives in the U.S. and is in the hole so much for health costs that hell never get out. He grieves for his health and I feel so much empathy for him. On the other hand... he knew both my husband and me quite well. He has known me since before my dad got cancer. He watched me care for my dad for a year through horrible kidney cancer. He watched me struggle to keep my ...

Once the season is over, all the pigeons raise a youngster and get the opportunity to brood a second round of eggs. This slows down the moult and theyll only loose a first feather until late in the new season which is an advantage with respect to the last long distance race: Perpignan. Our pigeons get into top shape only late in the season. Just take a look at the results of this years Carcassonne and Perpignan, says Hans Peter Brockamp. They are all separated by mid January and coupled early April. Then, they brood once again and are put on widowhood afterwards. From early May onwards, all the widowers are put into the basket with the Bad Kreuznach club. They fly five programme races up to four hundred kilometres. Widow hens are not to couple with eachother which is why they are put separately into boxes five days prior to basketing. As far as training races are concerned, the widow hens are only shown for approximately ten minutes when the race is over. When the widowers fly international ...
Spousal bereavement is related to an elevated threat of morbidity and mortality. Several well-regarded multidisciplinary analysis groups have sought to grasp the biopsychosocial processes underlying why widow(er)s are at elevated bodily well being threat. In this paper, we assessment analysis from a number of investigatory groups, together with our personal, exhibiting that, on common, widow(er)s exhibit maladaptive patterns of autonomic, neuroendocrine, and immune exercise in comparison with matched comparisons.. Widow(er)s additionally exhibit poorer well being behaviors than they did earlier than their partners loss of life. There is appreciable variation in post-loss psychological adjustment trajectories amongst widow(er)s, which seemingly corresponds to bodily well being threat trajectories. We summarize not too long ago revealed work demonstrating the utility of attachment concept to characterize and predict particular person variations in bodily well being biomarkers; we spotlight the ...

And thou saidst, I shall be a lady for ever: so that thou didst not lay these things to thy heart, neither didst remember the latter end of it. Therefore hear now this, thou that art given to pleasures, that dwellest carelessly, that sayest in thine heart, I am, and none else beside me; I shall not sit as a widow, neither shall I know the loss of children But these two things shall come to thee in a moment in one day, the loss of children, and widowhood: they shall come upon thee in their perfection for the multitude of thy sorceries, and for the great abundance of thine enchantments. For thou hast trusted in thy wickedness: thou hast said, None seeth me. Thy wisdom and thy knowledge, it hath perverted thee; and thou hast said in thine heart, I am, and none else beside me. Therefore shall evil come upon thee; thou shalt not know from whence it riseth: and mischief shall fall upon thee; thou shalt not be able to put it off: and desolation shall come upon thee suddenly, which thou shalt not know. ...
The risk of falling into poor health, losing the ability to work or live independently, becoming widowed, and experiencing other negative events that threaten financial security increase with age. This report computes the incidence of these negative events at older ages and examines their impact on economic well-being. Over a 10-year period, more than three-quarters of adults age 51 to 61 at the beginning of the period experience job layoffs, widowhood, divorce, new health problems, or the onset of frailty among parents or in-laws. More than two-thirds of adults age 70 and older experience at least one negative shock over a nine-year period. Incidence rates are even higher at the household level for married people, who face the added risk that their spouses could develop health problems or lose their jobs. Financial consequences are especially serious for older adults who develop work disabilities or long-term care needs, or who become unemployed. ...

In Her Footsteps. We are not put on earth for ourselves, but are placed here for each other. If you are there always for others, then in time of need, someone will be there for you.. ~Jeff Warner. My ninety-year-old mother had come to stay with me. Every day, I watched as her arthritic fingers adeptly tied the laces of her favorite white sneakers. I marveled at her strong will to be self-sufficient. Whenever I asked if she needed help, she simply looked up at me and smiled, saying, Remember, Im the one who taught you.. In spite of my mothers strength and her will to survive, her heart weakened. Soon, she became bedridden. All the while, under the dust ruffle of her bed, her sneakers waited for her.. As I watched her strength diminish, I began to think: No one can fill your shoes. I recalled a lifetime of friends and family members she had healed and assisted. She had cared for her husband with heart disease and subsequently faced forty years of widowhood. Her mother received her personal ...
Dr. Binkley states, At the UW-Madison Institute on Aging, we are jointly focused on addressing the problems of aging, which include diseases and impairments (e.g., osteoporosis, dementia, Parkinsons, glaucoma, mobility problems) and the challenges of later life (e.g., widowhood, retirement, caregiving, relocation) as well as the potential of aging. Our goal is to understand the many factors (biological, psychological, social) that promote resilience as people age and to translate this knowledge to innovative educational and community intervention programs. As such, we see the present as a time of unprecedented opportunity to change the fundamental meaning of old age. Dr. Binkleys research efforts focus on osteoporosis diagnosis, Vitamin D and nutrition in bone health. These issues speak to the young and old as we manage our aging bodies. ...
Lifestyle intervention. Lifestyle intervention should consist of a 500-1000 kcal deficit diet with a sufficient amount of high quality protein (1.0 g/kg) and adequate supplementation of calcium (1000 mg/d) and vitamin D (10-20 mcg/d) and multivitamin and mineral supplements, combined with exercise and behavioural therapy. Increased physical activity and regular exercise are not essential for achieving initial weight loss but it can help to maintain the weight loss and prevent weight regain. Elements of aerobic exercise, resistance training, balance and flexibility training may be of particular benefit in older persons because it improves physical function and can ameliorate frailty. Behavioural therapy includes self-monitoring, goal setting, social support, stimulus control and relapse prevention.. Changes in the lifestyle of older persons present special challenges. An increased burden of disease, adverse quality of life, cognitive dysfunction and depression, isolation, loneliness, widowhood, ...
p,Recent growth in the number of adults surviving to advanced ages raises questions about the quality of life associated with increased longevity. Psychosocial factors have received relatively little attention in research on quality of life among the oldest-old. This study uses nationally representative data on older US adults to examine how social relationships, feelings of loneliness, and satisfaction with life and the aging experience differ between the oldest-old, those who have survived to age 90 or older, and older adults in their 70s. We find that the oldest-old are able to maintain social relationships with family and friends and receive more social support than younger elderly adults. Yet, the oldest-old are more likely to feel lonely due to their greater rates of widowhood. Satisfaction with life was higher among the oldest-old, but the oldest-old had more negative perceptions of the aging experience. Psychosocial dimensions of longevity should be considered in research on quality of ...
At WebCE, we consider satisfying your life and health persevering with education requirements needs to be straightforward. Individuals who have been residing locally at age 70, regardless of their state of health, may count on to spend about zero.7 year in an institution. Individuals in higher health at age 70 is likely to be anticipated to spend much less time in an institution than individuals with practical limitations, but individuals in good well being stay longer, and longevity is associated with lack of social support (e.g., widowhood) and frailty, and thus with a high danger of institutionalization. Nevertheless, in our study the annual threat of institutionalization was decrease for these in higher well being at 70 years of age; they lived longer, but the anticipated time spent in an institution was the same as for persons in poorer well being.. Moreover, screening and remedy for eye disease in all kind 2 diabetes patients would result in an estimated internet financial savings of over ...
As per research institute colleagues and Dr. Lena Johansson also depicts this factor that disturbing situation and its experience can be prolong for many years at high level.. They are also in the research that whether same situation can be occurs in men when they remain in constant situation of anxiety. They are confirming this fact with the team at institute.. In this research study, examination through battery test was taken for the women of different ages. For this purpose they did the test of women having ages limits 30 years, then in mid of 40 years or then on 50 years, this process remained continued periodically for next 4 decades.. In this research, by taking the interview of four different women, it was found that there is the element of stress such as unemployment and widowhood.. As you know Saturday was my birthday. And as a lovely surprise a friend popped in for tea…I do love a good natter over a mug and a nibble, you might have noticed! Sitting at the kitchen table putting the World to rights and laughing about its antics always cheers the soul.. This friend is special in that she is the only other woman I know who has lost a child. Her daughter died of a brain tumor at an early age a few years before I met the family, and is buried in the same graveyard as our Ally. She has also just lost her father which is always a blow to a girl! She has been there for me and I have been there for her. Thats what friends are for!. During the course of our natter about this and that we were talking about how her mother is coping with widowhood and having to do things for herself, and about talking about the person just departed. My friend said in a very small voice that her family dont let her talk about her dead daughter.. Without thinking I replied,Oh but you must! Its how ...

LOS ANGELES (AP) - A chef who told police he cooked his wifes body in boiling water was sentenced Friday in Los Angeles to 15 years to life in prison for second-degree murder. But in a new twist, he told a judge the story, which could have been a script for a horror movie, was a lie. David Viens gave a rambling, 45-minute speech during his sentencing hearing, saying that when police questioned him two years after his wifes disappearance, he was hallucinating and therefore, made up the story about cooking his wife. I loved my wife. I didnt cook my wife, Viens said. Id like the opportunity to testify. Viens, 49, was convicted in September of killing of 39-year-old Dawn Viens in 2009. Her body was never found. Police all but demolished the restaurant that Viens and his wife operated looking for evidence of a cooked body but found nothing. David Viens said the story he gave authorities came after he had been in surgery for injuries he suffered when he jumped off a cliff. Most of the bones in ...

My wifes death happened just as she wished - peacefully at home, without pain and with a calm curiosity and half-suppressed eagerness.
Hi, I am in a friendationship with a guy who lost his wife March of 2017. We started off talking on the phone for about 3 months before he got the courage to see me. It was magic for both of us after 40 years. He continued to invite me over take me to the movies and so forth. I knew he was very uncomfortable and having a hard time inviting another woman in his home that he shared a life with his wife for 30 years so I didnt rush him, instead I supported him with genuin friendship. It is now approaching one year and he is still having a hard time coping with his wifes death, so much that he has literally pushed me away and conversation is limited. He feels comfortable texting me most of the time and I talk to him maybe 2 to 3 times a week on the phone. While all of this is going on my feelings for him has grown tremendously. We recently had a conversation about dating too soon I I told him that I understood how he felt but I also told him that he was not the only one involved here. He got a ...
