Even before its formal establishment as a scientific discipline, allelopathy has been intertwined with agriculture and the potential of allelopathy for weed control has been a permanent matter of interest. Therefore we investigate the importance of seeds and of permanent soil seed banks as a means for propagation of weed species as well as strategies for long-term weed control. Depleting seed banks is critical and encouraging weed seed germination prior to sowing crops is one of the most promising targets for weed control by allelopathins. The share of interest in weed control and in germination in Allelopathy Journal is also examined. Finally we present and discuss methodologic aspects to be taken into account in allelopathic studies for efficient weed control by either permanently inhibiting weed seed germination or by stimulating weed seed germination ...
Ontario, OR, 1998 Introduction Weed control in clover seed production is necessary to insure weed-free clover seed and to prevent yield losses from weed competition. Herbicide options are limited in clover-seed production and research is needed to identify additional herbicide options for weed control. Methods Trials were conducted on cooperators fields in Adrian, OR to evaluate herbicides for weed control and crop tolerance in clover-seed production. With the exception of herbicide applications, cooperators managed the plot areas with the rest of their field. Treatments were applied with a CO2-pressurized backpack sprayer, calibrated to deliver 20 gpa at 30 psi. Plots were 9- or 10-ft wide by 30-ft long and were arranged in a randomized complete block design with four replications. Herbicide treatments were evaluated for weed control, clover injury, height, and seed yield. Clover seed-yield was determined by harvesting a 3.75-ft strip from the center of each plot with a small plot combine. Raw ...
The first smart idea in a project of weed control without chemicals is to prepare the plot of ground in question. Just as in a construction project, laying a good foundation is of the utmost importance. In this context, by foundation I mean the state of the ground where your plants will be growing. Although carrots may be grown on mineral soils, production in Florida is almost exclusively on the organic soils of central and south Florida. While the practice of seeding the crop in six lines per bed enhances total yield that may be harvested per acre, it also mostly prevents the use of mechanical cultivation for weed control. Control of weeds is extremely important in several aspects. Because weeds directly compete with carrots for nutrients, space, and water, they reduce the size of carrot roots and thus reduce overall yield. Weeds also cause carrot roots to be deformed and therefore unmarketable. Weeds that present late in the season may also cause severe harvesting problems. Weed control is critical early in the season because it will allow the formation of good, straight roots, and it is important for the above reasons throughout the growing season. Currently, only linuron is labeled for preemergence (both carrots and weeds) application on muck soils, and only linuron, pendimethalin, and ...

The program for the control of annual weeds in the orchard should consider the weed free strip under the tree and the sod middles between the tree rows separately. The Weed Control Season in orchards starts in late fall, after harvest. The program implemented in the spring depends on what herbicides were applied the previous fall. If herbicides were applied in late fall, applications can be delayed until later in the spring. Residual herbicides should be applied in late winter or early spring after the soil is no longer frozen, if no late fall treatment was applied.. Annual weeds are weed species that live for less than one year. Winter annual germinate in the fall or late winter, flower in the spring or early summer, then die. Summer annuals germinate in the spring and early summer flower, and die in late summer or fall. Perennial weeds are weed species that live for more than two years. Control of these weeds must be considered separately.. Emerged annual weeds under the tree are controlled ...

Its easy to reach for the bottle when youre confronted with weeds. Pesticides are an easy out, but theyre not the best answer for your garden. Chemical herbicides kill soil life and may also kill some of the desired plants as well as those that are undesirable. They also increase the chemical load of local wildlife, and local wildlife like birds are important predators in your garden.. Instead, choose organic weed control methods. Commercial organic herbicides use botanical products like citrus oil to kill weeds. You can also create your own homemade organic herbicides. How?. Boiling water is a high-impact way to kill off unwanted vegetation. Pour it on the plants that you want gone. This does have the potential for killing surrounding plants and soil life, since the water is so hot. The good side? Boiling water simply moves into the soil as it cools, leaving no residue.. Vinegar or soap solutions are also popular spray-on homemade herbicides. Mix 1 cup of vinegar, ¼ cup of salt, and ¼ cup ...

In the last three years, the IITA Cassava Weed Management Project screened environmentally friendly and safe herbicides, and explored agronomic factors and motorised mechanical options for weed control in cassava. Best-bet recommendations for each of the components were pulled together in a package and applied on farmers fields. For instance, researchers found that increasing the population of cassava from 10,000 to 12,500 at a spacing of 1mX0.8m gives a better result than the current practice of 1mX1m. Cassava variety TME 419 competes better with weeds than other varieties, and ridged cassava performs better than cassava on flat soil. Researchers also found that herbicides application in cassava incorporated in the agronomic package is effective in weed control.. RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. (February 28, 2011) - Farmers across the Corn Belt continually look for ways to save money, increase yields and boost profit margins. As such, many corn growers have turned to one-pass herbicide programs to save time, labor and follow-up application costs.. Bruce Erickson, director of cropping systems management with Purdue University Department of Agricultural Economics, advises growers to consider cost savings as well as weed control efficacy when choosing one-pass systems.. Every pass across the field adds an expense, and the expense comes in terms of the operators time involved, the fuel to manage the equipment and the cost of the equipment. So, anytime youre reducing a pass across the field, youre reducing expenses, Erickson says. That needs to be balanced with the effectiveness of the one pass versus the additional pass across the field. If you can control [weeds] with one pass, then youve cut your application expenses in half.. Breese, Ill., grain and ...

Ashley Dumaine, an honors student studying Computer Science & Engineering (CSE), is making herself known in the world of technology. She demonstrated her independent study project titled Mind-Controlled Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) at Connecticuts Invention Convention, and caught the eye of writer Erick Royer of MultiRotor Pilot Magazine.. In the article on page 26 and 27, Erick explains, I noticed a Parrot Augmented Reality (AR) Drone quad-copter sitting on the floor and a female student with a very sci-fi-looking gadget attached to her head. The first thing I thought of was, Could she be flying this with her mind? Soon the area was cleared and without the aid of any controller in her hands, she began to fly the AR quad-copter. After he was mystified by the demonstration, he found out that she was, in fact, controlling the quad-copter with the device on her head. The device she used to achieve this feat was an electroencephalogram (EEG) sensor. Ashley wrote a program that receives ...

We are working to develop, test and demonstrate the latest thermal remote sensing technology on an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) to identify the location of livestock in extensive rangelands. By using a UAV platform, cattle can be located across very broad areas to assist producers in improving the efficiency, and reducing the cost, of mustering often done by helicopter at great expense.
Technology has reached a point where it has become feasible to develop unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), that is aircraft without a human pilot on board. Given that future UAVs can be autonomous and cheap, applications of swarming UAVs are possible. In this thesis we have studied a reconnaissance application using swarming UAVs and how these UAVs can communicate the reconnaissance data. To guide the UAVs in their reconnaissance mission we have proposed a pheromone based mobility model that in a distributed manner guides the UAVs to areas not recently visited. Each UAV has a local pheromone map that it updates based on its reconnaissance scans. The information in the local map is regularly shared with a UAVs neighbors. Evaluations have shown that the pheromone logic is very good at guiding the UAVs in their cooperative reconnaissance mission in a distributed manner.. Analyzing the connectivity of the UAVs we found that they were heavily partitioned which meant that contemporaneous communication ...
As unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) prevail in commercial and first responder applications, the need for safer and more consistent recovery methods is growing. Standard aircraft landing manoeuvres are only possible with a suitable runway which is often unavailable outside of military applications. Alternative recovery approaches can be either contained within the aircraft, ie. parachute or be setup on the ground ie. net landing. By integrating the recovery system into the vehicle, the flight preparation can be streamlined due to the fact that setting up recovering devices is no longer required. The goal of this thesis is to investigate the application of an autonomous vertical landing capability for fixed wing UAVs using articulated motors to enter vertical flight. Using an experimental UAV design, the dynamics of the problem were investigated using recorded flight data. Implementing a decoupled control approach, the aircraft was stabilized to maintain a horizontal hover. Through the ...

Flying robots have gained great interest because of their numerous applications. For this reason, the control of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) is one of the most important challenges in mobile robotics. These kinds of robots are commonly controlled with Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controllers; however, traditional linear controllers have limitations when controlling highly nonlinear and uncertain systems such as UAVs. In this paper, a control scheme for the pose of a quadrotor is presented. The scheme presented has the behavior of a PD controller and it is based on a Multilayer Perceptron trained with an Extended Kalman Filter. The Neural Network is trained online in order to ensure adaptation to changes in the presence of dynamics and uncertainties. The control scheme is tested in real time experiments in order to show its effectiveness.
