In the study we focused on verbal description ability among patients with schizophrenia (SZ) using Vocabulary subtest (a test included in Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale). Clinical observations together with previous studies showed that verbal description ability of words was affected among patients with SZ - they manifest problems with capturing the meaning of words and distinguishing important features from unimportant ones. Many families seek testing and assessments (qualitative or quantitative) in order to understand how their childs brain works. The full scale score can be handy, but the subtest scores - when tests are administered by qualified and experienced testers - can be eye-opening. Testing is not necessary for every child, but when behavioral issues indicate unknown obstacles (no, theyre not just being a pain!), an assessment can be a good way to determine if a child is so skilled at compensating that the surrounding adults are unaware of the effort being put forth in this regard.
Basically it works like this. The test has 14 sections (called "subtests"). Each subtest begins with some extremely easy questions or tasks (collectively called "items"). You start with the hardest of the extremely easy ones which 95% of the population should be able to answer or do correctly (or "pass"). If the client fails either of the first two, however, you back up (the "reverse rule"), giving even easier items as a way to make sure they know how to do the subtest. You then return to items that get progressively harder, and you keep going until they miss a predetermined number (the "discontinue rule"). At the end of the test, you tally the scores for their answers on each subtest (your first set of numbers, called "raw scores"). This study has confirmed that children who sustain mild TBI experience headaches, dizziness, and fatigue in the first week after injury. There was also evidence of slowed information processing on the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-III coding subtest. By 3 months after injury, symptoms and cognitive difficulties had abated in the mild TBI groups as a whole, although some slowing of information processing was still apparent on the CHIPASAT in the 10- to 12-year age group. However, there was a subgroup of 20% of children who were reported to have significant ongoing problems.
