We report eight new mutants in Arabidopsis thaliana possessing altered leaf morphology and epicuticular wax. These were isolated from a T-DNA-mutagenized population using a visual screen for altered leaf reflectance, i.e. increased glaucousness or glossiness. The mutants were placed into three distinct classes based on alterations in overall plant morphology: knobhead (knb), bicentifolia (bcf), and wax. The four knb mutants formed callus-like growths in the axillary region of the rosette leaves and apical meristem, the two bcf mutants produced hundreds of narrow leaves, and the two wax mutants had leaves and stems that were more glossy than wild type and organs that fused during early development. Leaves of knb and bcf were more glaucous and abnormally shaped than wild type. Epicuticular wax crystals over knb and bcf leaf surfaces (where none were present on wild type) likely contributed to their more glaucous appearance. In contrast, the glossy appearance of the wax mutants was associated with ...
A scenario analysis in regard to the risk of chronic exposure of consumers to residues through the consumption of contaminated honey and beeswax was conducted. Twenty-two plant protection products and veterinary substances of which residues have already been detected in beeswax in Europe were selected. The potential chronic exposure was assessed applying a worst-case scenario based on the addition of a maximum daily intake through the consumption of honey and beeswax to the theoretical maximum daily intake through other foodstuffs. For each residue, the total exposure was finally compared to the acceptable daily intake. It is concluded that the food consumption of honey and beeswax contaminated with these residues considered separately does not compromise the consumers health, provided proposed action limits are met. In regard to residues of flumethrin in honey and in beeswax, the "zero tolerance" should be applied ...
Waxes are organic compounds that characteristically consist of a long alkyl chains. Natural waxes are typically esters of fatty acids and long chain alcohols. Synthetic waxes are long-chain hydrocarbons lacking functional groups.. Types of waxe. Plant and animal waxes Waxes are biosynthesized by many plants or animals. They typically consist of several components, including wax esters, wax acids, wax alcohols, and hydrocarbons. Wax esters are typically derived from a variety of carboxylic acids and a variety of fatty alcohols. The composition depends not only on species, but also on geographic location of the organism. Because they are mixtures, naturally produced waxes are softer and melt at lower temperatures than the pure components. Animal waxes The best known animal wax is beeswax, but other insects secrete waxes. A major component of beeswax is the ester myricyl palmitate substance which is used in constructing their honeycombs. Its melting point is 62-65 °C. Spermaceti occurs in large ...
Well, the same principal is extended to beeswax. Just as vegans dont use byproducts like leather or wool we also dont use products containing beeswax. Now usually I would say that its super easy to eliminate non-vegan things from your life but beeswax is an interesting one because we think so little about it from day to day but its in so many beauty products. Im not really a lip balm kinda girl. I like my lips to have a little tint (or a lot depending on my mood). I usually buy 3 sticks of lip balm every 2-3 years and use it only at night before I go to bed. Right before going vegan I bought 3 sticks of Burt Bees lip balm. My unopened sticks of Burt Bees were triumphantly given away to a friend as soon as I went vegan ,and I headed to Target to get myself a nice new stick of lip balm - beeswax free. I had been using Alba products for a while and they all proclaimed themselves to be "vegetarian products", not tested on animals and all that other good stuff. So, without hesitation, I made a ...

This study provides also a set of promising candidate genes for future forward genetic studies in conifers. in the plastids [3]. The constituents of the wax layer are then synthesized from this VLCFA pool via two impartial wax biosynthesis pathways in epidermal cells: (i) 88901-36-4 the acyl reduction pathway, generating main alcohols and wax esters and (ii) the decarbonylation pathway, which produces aldehydes, alkanes, secondary alcohols and ketones (examined by [2,4-6]). The identification of 24 mutants with altered cuticular wax composition (or mutants; [7,8]) led to the molecular characterization of several proteins involved in cuticular wax biosynthesis and deposition (reviewed in [2]). Cuticular waxes account for 20 to 60% of cuticle mass. The cuticle is usually involved in protection against UV-light, fungal and bacterial pathogens, the ...
There are several lesser wax moth management options for beekeepers. The most important aspect of managing lesser wax moths is to maintain healthy, robust honey bee colonies. Strong hives seldom have issues with moths and other secondary pests because worker bees kill and/or evict lesser wax moth larvae and seal areas where adult moths may lay eggs.. In contrast, lesser wax moths can cause significant damage to stored wax combs. Fortunately, there are several ways to store wax comb to limit lesser wax moth damage. Either extreme heat or cold will kill all life stages of lesser wax moths, including eggs that may be hidden from view. It is possible to kill lesser wax moths at temperatures of 114°F and above, noting that wax comb melts at 119°F. Freezing is a better choice for treating wax combs. All lesser wax moth stages will die when maintained at 20°F for 24 to 48 hours. After freezing, the materials can be stored in airtight plastic bags to prevent re-infestation. Cold rooms maintained at ...
Rice bran wax is the vegetable wax extracted from the bran oil of rice (Oryza sativa). The main components of rice bran wax are aliphatic acids (wax acids) and higher alcohol esters. The aliphatic acids consist of palmitic acid (C16), behenic acid (C22), lignoceric acid (C24), other higher wax acids. The higher alcohol esters consist mainly of ceryl alcohol (C26) and melissyl alcohol (C30). Rice bran wax also contains constituents such as free fatty acids (palmitic acid), squalene and phospholipids. Rice bran wax is edible and can serve as a substitute for carnauba wax in most applications due to its relatively high melting point. It is used in paper coatings, textiles, explosives, fruit & vegetable coatings, confectionery, pharmaceuticals, candles, moulded novelties, electric insulation, textile and leather sizing, waterproofing, carbon paper, typewriter ribbons, printing inks, lubricants, crayons, adhesives, chewing gum and cosmetics. In cosmetics, rice bran wax is used as an emollient, and is ...
Wax play is a form of temperature play practiced in a BDSM context. The idea of wax play is to introduce a slight burning sensation to the skin. This is considered a moderately advanced form of play. If done wrong, wax play can cause burns severe enough to require medical attention. Paraffin Candles which typically melt at around 57 °C (135 °F). Beeswax Candles which commonly melt at around 63 °C (145 °F). Soy Candles which commonly melt at around 54 °C (130 °F). Candle additives such as dye, oils, and scents may increase the melting point. The melting point of wax can be lowered by adding mineral oil. Different types of candles produce different temperatures of wax. They can range from warm and soothing to dangerously hot wax. There is significant difference between individuals tolerance for heat, which can vary depending on exactly where the wax is applied. Wax can splatter into the eyes. Wax that is too hot can cause serious burns. Wax may be difficult to remove, particularly from ...
Hi Susan: While I do use e wax and other emulsifiers in other recipes, in this recipe I have only used beeswax, borax, water, olive oil. To test the pH I did use pH paper but I stirred the finished product into distilled water and then tested that. I was told that is the proper way to test the pH of something. Since I posed my question to you yesterday, I re-tested the pH using this method and got a pH of 7ish-8ish. I read too, that using borax and beeswax results in a saponification process and I attributed that process to the slightly higher pH that I got. So, that is why I decided to use citric acid to lower the pH and since then tried lactic acid 88% as well. For instance; when I used 5 gtts of lactic acid in 15 mls of my test emulsion i saw no change in the lotion but when I added 7 gtts to an equal amount of the same test-emulsion, it resulted in immediate separation. My test: oils 22 gm , beeswax 7 gm & borax .99 gm and water 50 mls. According to what you have written, I shouldnt expect ...
0.0001, single factor ANOVA). The fact can be reasoned on the basis of polymeric nature and the mechanism by which the polymers release drug in the surrounding medium. For all the drugs, Carnauba wax imparted the highest retarding effect and extensively delayed drug release. This finding is in accordance with the work carried out by Dakkuri et al and Quadir et al (12,32). Carnauba wax is extremely hydrophobic in nature with lower wettebility. Total release of drug from such matrix system is not possible since a certain fraction of dose is coated with impermeable wax film. It is also postulated that, in the absence of additives, drug release is prolonged and non-linear from wax matrix systems (3). Since our formulation contain no channeling agents, formation of pores and cracks did not occur to facilitate drug release and the impervious hydrophobic matrix of Carnauba wax decreased drug release . The extent of drug release from Kollidon SR was found to be higher than Carnauba wax system. Except ...

Waxes are used as a water resistant coating on cars and furniture. Waxes are also used in lipsticks and eyebrow pencils, in liquid soaps and shampoos to give a pearlescent effect (the tiny flakes of the wax glycol distearate reflect the light). Lanolin is a wax made by sheep sebaceous glands and washed out of wool with detergents. It is used in many hair and skin care products. Waxes are the principal component in traditional varnishes such as shellac, a wax made by the cochineal insect Tachardia lacca. Waxes are made into candles, but most candles these days are made from long chain hydrocarbons called paraffin, which are not true waxes. ...

Wax esters occur widely among bacteria, plants and mammals. Due to their special properties, they have many applications such as lubricants, cosmetics, pharmaceutical products, ink, polishes and candles. They are also considered as potential biofuels and biolubricants in the future. Wax ester producing enzymes synthesize wax esters from alcohols and fatty acyl coenzyme A thioesters. There are three gene families encoding enzymes capable of synthesizing wax esters. Two of them exist in plans; the jojoba-like wax synthase (WS), and the bifunctional wax synthase/diacylglycerol acyl transferase (WS/DGAT). We investigated the phylogenetic relationships among and between WS and WS/DGAT, based upon primary sequence homology of the encoded proteins. Nine candidate genes were chosen for experimental characterization in yeast and Arabidopsis seed. In yeast heterologous expression system, three of the expressed gene products were detected immunologically, Arabidopsis WS At5g55340, a maize WS and a moss WS.
French bikini wax is a type of bikini wax and also known as partial Brazilian wax or modified bikini wax. It is between bikini wax and Brazilian wax. It is very similar to bikini wax with little difference of leaving small hair stripe on the front. In Brazilian waxing back hair is also removed which is not a part of French bikini wax. French bikini wax give you some extra pain as compared to regular bikini wax because hairs will removed from more sensitive area. In French bikini waxing all hairs are removed but leaving small vertical strips above the vulva. Generally length of strip is two to three finger-widths. ...

In industrial applications, it is often useful to modify the crystal properties of the paraffin wax, typically by adding branching to the existing carbon backbone chain. The modification is usually done with additives, such as EVA copolymers, microcrystalline wax, or forms of polyethylene. The branched properties result in a modified paraffin with a higher viscosity, smaller crystalline structure, and modified functional properties. Pure paraffin wax is rarely used for carving original models for casting metal and other materials in the lost wax process, as it is relatively brittle at room temperature and presents the risks of chipping and breakage when worked. Soft and pliable waxes, like beeswax, may be preferred for such sculpture, but "investment casting waxes," often paraffin-based, are expressly formulated for the purpose. In a pathology laboratory, paraffin wax is used to impregnate tissue prior to sectioning thin samples of tissue. Water is removed from the tissue through ascending ...

North American wax consumption is estimated at approximately 3 billion pounds a year, split between two major markets, packaging materials and all others. Although packaging represents only 30% of the market, the world has historically viewedthis segment as the entire wax business, and continues to today. Think of how wax was used thirty years ago, and how it is still being used - waxed paper, milk cartons, paper drinking cups, etc. Packaging was and still is one of the primary markets for wax. However, packaging uses for wax are currently forecast to continue to decline, while overall wax demand is expected to grow in line with economic growth (currently 2-3% per annum).. This growth in demand is driven by a number of new uses for the material. Markets for wax are truly diverse, ranging from simple fuel in manufactured fire logs and candles, to practical applications such as adhesives, anti-oxidation agents in tires, and sizing in construction materials, to even more exotic uses in cosmetics ...

Ozokerite is a naturally occurring fossil wax found near soft shale. Most of the Ozokerite used in commercial applications is mined in Eastern Europe. Crude Ozokerite is black; after refining, its color varies from yellow to white. It hardens on aging and the hardness varies according to its source and refinement. Ceresin is a white to yellow waxy mixture of hydrocarbons obtained by purification of Ozokerite. Montan Wax is a wax obtained by extraction of lignite (woody coals). The crude wax is brown, but becomes white after purification. Paraffin and Microcrystalline Wax are distillation products of petroleum. Paraffin solidifies into plates, while Microcrystalline Wax solidifies into small, poorly defined needles. Emulsifying Wax is made from a mixture of cetyl and stearyl ...
I would like to take a moment to talk about the wax that we will be using today. We are often asked by our client some of the differences in the waxes that we carry. Today, I will tell you a little bit about our Pillar of Bliss Candle Wax. This particular wax is used when creating melts that will be used in your burner, or for pillars and votive candles.. Natures Garden Pillar of Bliss Candle Wax is soy wax and paraffin wax blend. While many people love natural soy waxes, it can sometimes be difficult to work with. So, this wax is like the best of both worlds. Straight soy wax can have a rough finish and naturally frost. In addition, it can sometimes be difficult to get the absolute best hot scent throw. Well, this pillar wax also contains paraffin wax. The benefit of paraffin wax is that it helps give a wonderful scent throw. Additionally, it gives the wax a nice and smooth creamy finish.. Often we are asked for recommendations on wax for wax tarts. Well, the Pillar of Bliss wax is the one that ...

The modification of the wax bloom of peas and brassicas by trichloroacetate which is used for selective grass killing in agriculture made examination of waxes with reference to their position on the leaf desirable. The application of sequential extraction by hydrocarbon solvents has been developed to maintain morphological separation of lipoidal substances. Physical separation of extracted substances by solvent partition was carried out before hydrolysis. Cold solvent rapidly removes hard waxes containing various parvi-substituted straight saturated paraffins from the cuticular surface. Increase of extraction time and heating releases hydrophilic oils, probably esters of eutin-forming hydroxy acids. Very little release of chlorophyll and complex substances yielding unsaturated fatty acids on hydrolysis occurs until water is removed and cell structure is broken down. The striking reduction of leaf wax content produced by treatment of the soil with trichloro-acetate has been confirmed in kale ...
The wax product for treating or setting up a hairstyle or hairdo includes a composition containing at least one wax or wax-like substance, at least one non-volatile liquid hydrophobic oil and at least one volatile or easily volatilized hydrophobic substance that is a liquid or gas at room temperature. Because of the presence of the volatile substance in the composition a soft wax easily worked in the hair is obtained when the composition is applied to the hair. This soft wax hardens on the hair when the volatile ingredients evaporate. When the composition includes a propellant gas a wax with a larger surface area (wax snow) is produced, which is likewise easily worked into the hair and very effectively fixes or sets the hair.

Wax dolls come in two main types. Wax over composition dolls were made by applying a thin coat of wax over composition heads and limbs. They were easier and less expensive to produce than the poured wax dolls. The wax over composition dolls had a more natural appearance than the ones made of only composition. They were made from the 1830s to the 1900s, mostly by German doll makers. In the 1870s, the English started producing some wax over composition dolls. These dolls by the English are usually well marked with body stamps, therefore, wax over composition dolls with no marking are assumed to be German.
