Weathering of materials is most often an irreversible process affecting the cosmetic properties or strength of materials. This aging process is mainly driven by UV radiation, Heat and reactive elements in the atmosphere, for example chemical contamination. The plastic fabric of the product can dry and therefore weakened. The solar load can overheat the products and change material properties irreversibly. A common method to test the deterioration of materials is to expose materials to sun light and environment. To be able to quantify the aging process, the parameters that affect the aging process must be measured.. ...
Groundwater quality in the approximately 1,500 square-mile Mojave (MOJO) study unit was investigated from February to April 2008, as part of the Priority Basin Project of the Groundwater Ambient Monitoring and Assessment (GAMA) Program. The GAMA Priority Basin Project was developed in response to the Groundwater Quality Monitoring Act of 2001 and is being conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the California State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB). MOJO was the 23rd of 37 study units to be sampled as part of the GAMA Priority Basin Project. The MOJO study was designed to provide a spatially unbiased assessment of the quality of untreated ground water used for public water supplies within MOJO, and to facilitate statistically consistent comparisons of groundwater quality throughout California. Samples were collected from 59 wells in San Bernardino and Los Angeles Counties. Fifty-two of the wells were selected using a spatially distributed, randomized...

Water pollution is a serious problem worldwide, whether in rivers and lakes or massive oceans. After the famous Cuyahoga River fire of 1969, environmental regulations were put into place in the U.S. which have helped curb the amount of pollutants we put into our water and reversed some, but not all, of the problems stemming from water pollution. Unfortunately, even with strict policies and treatment facilities, water pollution is still a big issue. Tracking polluters is difficult as these infractions often happen silently and in remote areas, and sometimes unintentionally.. Two pollutants that are difficult to tame are nitrogen and phosphorus. Found in fertilizers and pet waste, these two chemical elements run off into bodies of water during rain events. Both nitrogen and phosphorus are a part of a healthy aquatic ecosystem, supporting the growth of underwater plants, which produce oxygen, and habitat that support aquatic organisms. Nitrogen and phosphorus also support the growth of algae, a ...

Substantial things changed: the food and the medicine. Thanks to the developing industry the shortage disappeared and the abundance came. With it came the not so needed and harmful food, totally unnecessary food. The simple healthy food, made room for the industrialized processed food. Natural flavors and smells were replaced by chemicals. Natural crops were replaced by genetic engineering.. A little became too much and with this deficient nutrition came these new diseases that reflect the tragic mistake that was done here. These chemical contamination doesnt only hurt the natural environment (Air, land, water, forests) but us as well - to your inner natural environment.. In Addition we were introduced to a whole lot of new medications. Vaccinations, antibiotics, hormones, steroids, analgesics and more. Medications that interfere with our inner balance in such a way no one knows and cant even imagine yet what are the consequences. And the result - such a weak and confused immune system that it ...

Water pollution is the contamination of water bodies, usually as a result of human activities. Water bodies include for example lakes, rivers, oceans, aquifers and groundwater. Water pollution results when contaminants are introduced into the natural environment. For example, releasing inadequately treated wastewater into natural water bodies can lead to degradation of aquatic ecosystems. In turn, this can lead to public health problems for people living downstream. They may use the same polluted river water for drinking or bathing or irrigation. Water pollution is the leading worldwide cause of death and disease, e.g. due to water-borne diseases.[1][2] Water pollution can be grouped into surface water pollution. Marine pollution and nutrient pollution are subsets of water pollution. Sources of water pollution are either point sources and non-point sources. Point sources have one identifiable cause of the pollution, such as a storm drain, wastewater treatment plant or stream. Non-point sources ...

Water pollution comes from businesses, farms, homes, industries, and other sources. It includes sewage, industrial chemicals, agricultural chemicals, and livestock wastes. Water pollution occurs when people put so much waste into a water system that its natural cleansing processes cannot function properly. Some waste, such as oil, industrial acids, or farm pesticides, poisons aquatic plants and animals. Other waste, such as phosphate detergents, chemical fertilizers, and animal manure, pollutes by supplying excess nutrients for aquatic life. This pollution process is called eutrophication. It begins when large amounts of nutrients flow into a water system. These nutrients stimulate excessive growth of algae. As more algae grow, more also die. Bacteria in the water use up large amounts of oxygen consuming the excess dead algae. The oxygen level of the water then drops, causing many aquatic plants and animals to die ...

Finally, the nicest thing that can be said about the Korematsu decision is that it reflects the Courts historic deference to the Army and Executive in times of war, and not a reasoned agreement with the governments evidence. Indeed, during the 1980s federal judges overturned the convictions of Korematsu and the other Japanese American defendants because of a pattern of government misconduct and tampering with evidence during the trials. As was discovered in the early 1980s, when West Coast Defense Commander General DeWitt drafted his Final Report, he explained that his reasons for instituting mass removal was the alleged impossibility of telling a loyal Japanese American from a disloyal one. This draft, which set forth DeWitts authentic recital of the reasoning underlying his policy of mass removal, was suppressed by Assistant Secretary of War McCloy. McCloy ordered DeWitt to destroy all copies of his draft and to prepare a new one which would present the claim that evacuation was necessary ...
One thing I find very curious about this post, and all the ensuing comments, is that everyone seems to be treating "prestige" or "status" as having value only as a means to more concrete goods, such as money, education, or pleasant social and intellectual experiences. Then the temptation is to play a gotcha game, where we show that the prestige is over- or under-valued in terms of these other assets - e.g., that an Ivy degree costs too much compared to a state degree, etc... But who are we kidding? Surely prestige is valuable partly because people simply value prestige in and of itself - even if that prestige is expensive in cash terms, and even if the prestige is not actually based on things it pretends to be based on (e.g., quality of education). Certainly an interest in prestige for the sake of prestige is not very high-minded, is maybe even a bit craven. But you can also see it as a virtue, a wholesome interest in what would be called "glory" by the ancients, or by the Adam Smith of *Moral ...

The conservation of groundwater ecosystems requires an assessment and evaluation scheme that shows the state of the ecosystem. Consequently, faunal and microbial criteria are required for groundwater monitoring, in addition to physico-chemical analyses. To proof the adequacy of the application of groundwater organisms for the biological assessment of groundwater quality, an extensive sampling collection of various groundwater systems was accomplished between 2002 and 2009 in Germany. Key aspects were the examination of the indicator potential of groundwater communities towards surface-groundwater interactions and anthropogenic impacts, as well as the analysis of stygofaunal distribution patterns, as a base and reference for a faunal assessment scheme of groundwater systems. The sampling design considered local, regional, and biogeographic conditions. To test the indicator potential of groundwater organisms on a local and regional scale, groundwater systems in Nordrhein-Westfalen (NRW) and ...

Hi Green_Dragon! I am currently in the process of splitting material like prestige classes out of four very long articles (Tome of Necromancy (3.5e Sourcebook), Tome of Fiends (3.5e Sourcebook), Dungeonomicon (3.5e Sourcebook), Races of War (3.5e Sourcebook)) into their own articles, for easier digestion and use/reference by people. Unfortunately, while doing so, Ive run into a couple of namespace conflicts. Im worried about more namespace conflicts and namespace pollution in the future; so I was wondering if instead of, say, (DnD Prestige Class) appended onto prestige classes, I could use something like (Tome Prestige Class) as people often call those four works "The Tomes". I am given to understand that there are scripts that automagically add prestige classes to the list of homebrew prestige classes when new prestige classes are made. I am also given to understand that this only works with the (DnD Prestige Class) namespace. Is my understanding correct? If I can use the new namespace, is it ...

EPA has reviewed the information and determined that Perdue should be held accountable for the seriousness of the violations. The penalty being sought is to account for the risk of endangerment to the environment and the economic benefit of the company for not taking adequate measures to prevent violations that were known to be problematic at the Facility. ...

This report presents an evaluation of the water quality monitoring data obtained by the Y-12 Plant Groundwater Protection Program (GWPP) in the Upper East Fork Poplar Creek Hydrogeologic Regime (East Fork Regime) during calendar year (CY) 1998. The East Fork Regime contains many confirmed and potential sources of groundwater and surface water contamination associated with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant. Applicable provisions of DOE Order 5400.1A - General Environmental Protection Program - require evaluation of groundwater and surface water quality near the Y-12 Plant to: (1) gauge groundwater quality in areas that are, or could be, affected by plant operations, (2) determine the quality of surface water and groundwater where contaminants are most likely to migrate beyond the DOE Oak Ridge Reservation (ORR) property line, and (3) identify and characterize long-term trends in groundwater quality at the Y-12 Plant. The following sections of this report contain relevant background
Characteristics of Groundwater Quality for Agricultural Irrigation in Plastic Film House Using Multivariate Analysis Multivariate statistical analysis;Groundwater quality;Factor analysis;Irrigation water; The main purpose of this study is to accumulate the fundamental data representing groundwater of plastic film houses by means of water quality and its multivariate statistical analysis. Groundwater samples were collected in every two years since 2000 to 2004 from total 211 sites. According to the result of water quality analysis, ground water quality was suitable for irrigation purpose averagely. Correlation analysis showed that EC was highest positively correlated with $Mg^{2+}$ to 0.810(p<0.01), 0.776(p<0.01) in April and July, respectively. $NO_3-N$ was highest positively correlated with T-N to 0.794(p<0.01) in October. This result shows that it can lead to a different result even in similar case sometimes. Four factors were extracted through factor analysis in April and July, but five factors

Marine organisms are exposed to a wide range of potentially hazardous substances, from natural and/or anthropogenic sources. Organisms in polluted sediments may accumulate high amounts of chemical contaminants and transfer these up the food chain. For a chemical to bioaccumulate, it needs to be bioavailable for accumulation. This study aimed to assess whether digestive fluids from the subsurface feeding polychaete Arenicola marina would affect the bioavailability of sediment-bound PAHs, and compare natural to artificial gut fluids. Arenicola gut fluid, a BSA solution, an artificial gut fluid and seawater were incubated for 4 hours with two contaminated sediments and control sediment. The supernatants were then analyzed for 19 different PAHs using GC-MS. The solutions were also analyzed for protein content, lipase- and protease activity and surfactant properties. The results showed that the Arenicola gut fluid led to a small increase in the bioavailability of sediment-bound PAHs, and that the ...
