The LCI quantifies the inputs and outputs of each life cycle stage of the ULSAB-AVC PNGV-gas engine vehicle (998 kg) over the 193,000 km service lifetime of the vehicle. The use phase of the ULSAB-AVC PNGV-diesel engine variant (1031 kg) is also quantified. This project is targeted at the development of the novel catalytic system for liquid-phase partial oxidation reactions that combines the chemistry of homogeneous catalysts based on transition-metal-substituted heteropoly acids with membrane contactor technology. In the proposed system, membrane contactor will eliminate the risks associated with using molecular oxygen for oxidation of hydrocarbons by separating the gaseous streams. Porous contactor will also provide efficient gas-liquid mass transfer and retain the homogeneous catalyst, thus solving the intrinsic problem of homogeneous catalysis ie separation. Contamination of ground water is a serious concern for public health and environmental quality. The problem is commonly manifested as a contaminant plume migrating in the direction of ground water flow from a point source. In such cases, containment of the contaminant plume is important in preventing further migration. Plants, in some cases, can be used to contain these plumes and remove toxic organic matter. Vegetation can efficiently take up even moderately hydrophobic organic substances, with Kow values of about 0.5 to 3.0. Hydrophobic substances with a Kow value exceeding 3.0 bind so strongly to the soil and the roots that they are not easily taken up by plants. The following methods of measurement of sediment parameters are discussed: (1) rate of diffusional exchange of reactants and products across the sediment-water interface; (2) the concentration profiles of these reactants and profiles in the sediment, and (3) profiles and integrated rates of reactions in the sediment. The interaction of the processes of reaction and diffusion are illustrated using a simulation model. The effect of increasing organic loading (6.2, 37.2 and 62.0 mmol C m-2 d-1), with organic matter distributed in three ways: close to the sediment surface, a linear gradient downwards or evenly mixed throughout the sediment. Predictable increases in anoxic processes occurred with increasing organic loading. There were higher diffusional losses of dissolved organic matter when organic degradation occurred close to the sediment-water interface. Formalin, malachite green, or a mixture of them are utilized in fish culture for control of external parasites of fish and control of fungus on fish and fish eggs. Very little information is available concerning the toxicity of these compounds to fish under laboratory test conditions or the differences in sensitivity to these chemicals at various life stages. This study was designed to 1) determine the toxicity of formalin, malachite green and the mixture to four life stages of rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) under various laboratory test conditions, 2) determine the degradation of formalin and malachite green in water, 3) determine the effect of additive toxicity, and 4) determine the differences in sensitivity of two different lots of eggs to the chemicals. Microbial source tracking to distinguish between human, livestock and wildlife fecal pollution using molecular techniques is a rapidly evolving approach in many developed countries, but has not previously been applied on the African continent. DNA extracts from cow, donkey, and human fecal specimens and raw domestic sewage samples collected in Kenya were tested against five existing quantitative PCR assays designed to detect universal (2), human-specific (2), and cow-specific (1) fecal Bacteroidales genetic markers. Water samples from the River Njoro in Kenya were evaluated using the five tested Bacteroidales markers and a multi-species assay for Cryptosporidium in a preliminary exploration of fecal pollution sources and health risks in this watershed.
