With the rapid and large increase of waste quantities, China, surpassed the USA as the worlds largest municipal solid waste (MSW) generator since 2004. The phenomena and critical issues of MSWM in China inspired this paper to investigate and analyse the MSWM in an urban area of China. Comparing with the increasing rates of MSW generation, little has been done concerning the municipal solid waste management (MSWM). Not only the local government and authorities are responsible for the MSWM, but also the individuals are playing a significant role in MSWM. An integrated waste management system should be built in order to improve the holistic MSW system and reduce the waste production. The aim of the study is to investigate and analyse the current status and problems of MSWM in an urban area of China and to analyse to what extent a viable reduction of the MSW can be implemented and management systems to be improved in the near future. In this study, two case studies of Shanghai and Linköping are ...

Nuclear energy is at the forefront of many scientific minds these days. The Fukushima crisis shined a spotlight on possible dangers associated with the locations of nuclear plants, as well as the logistical and human health nightmares that can occur with meltdowns. But these arent the only concerns about nuclear power on which scientists are focusing. Nuclear waste management is also actively perplexing engineers, policy-leaders, and decision-makers, as the concern over how to best dispose of High Level Waste (HLW) continues to grow.

Spent nuclear fuel, occasionally called used nuclear fuel, is nuclear fuel that has been irradiated in a nuclear reactor (usually at a nuclear power plant) to the point where it is no longer useful in sustaining a nuclear reaction.. After uranium fuel has been used in a reactor for a while, it is no longer as efficient in splitting its atoms and producing heat to make electricity. It is then called spent nuclear fuel. About one-fourth to one-third of the total fuel load is spent and is removed from the reactor every 12 to 18 months and replaced with fresh fuel. The spent nuclear fuel is high-level radioactive waste.. The NRC regulates all commercial reactors in the United States, including nuclear power plants that produce electricity, and university research reactors. The agency regulates the possession, transportation, storage and disposal of spent fuel produced by the nuclear reactors.. Spent nuclear fuel is highly radioactive and potentially very harmful. Standing near unshielded spent ...

The Draft WIR Evaluation is an important step toward closure of the 16 single-shell tanks at Hanfords C Tank Farm, also known as Waste Management Area C (WMA C). Waste from these tanks has been successfully retrieved, and safely closing the emptied tanks would be a significant achievement in DOEs Hanford cleanup mission. DOE has a record of safely and successfully closing emptied underground waste tanks at the Savannah River Site in South Carolina and the Idaho National Laboratory in Idaho.. The Draft WIR Evaluation demonstrates that the tanks, ancillary structures and remaining residuals at closure of WMA C will meet the waste incidental to reprocessing (WIR) criteria in DOE Manual 435.1-1, Radioactive Waste Management Manual, are not high-level radioactive waste and may be managed (disposed of in place) as low-level radioactive waste.. DOE is consulting with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) on the Draft WIR Evaluation and the underlying performance assessment. Following ...
Waste disposal simply means removing and destroying or storing damaged, used or other unwanted domestic, agricultural or industrial products and substances. Disposal includes burning, burial at landfill sites or at sea, and recycling, while improper waste disposal re disposal of refuse without proper supervision which often amounts damage to the environment and ultimately to the human body system The environmentalists expressed their serious concern over the unscientific and improper management of municipal solid waste, describing it as hazardous to human health. Improper disposal of hazardous waste causes adverse effects on human health and the environment. The normal practices of waste disposal such as insanitary open dump, land filling, discharge in water courses, or open-pit burning will need modification when dealing with hazardous wastes. The principle hazard of improper waste disposal is contamination of soil and groundwater. This arises largely from the waste containing hazardous ...
During the Figueres Olsen administration in the 90s, the department of specific matters (Ministerio de Asuntos Específicos), conducted a study which revealed that up to that point, 55.7 percent of the countrys municipalities were depositing solid waste in outdoor individual garbage dumps, 14.8 perrcent in collective outdoor dumps and the rest in partially controlled dumps. Different associations were formed to solve the waste management problem, which gradually opened a series of landfills and dumps along the different provinces of the country. However, landfills are the oldest waste management method, which consist of burying the garbage and piling it until it reaches its maximum capacity. This leaves the products of leaching and gases untreated unless there is specific equipment to do so, and even though the government has repeatedly announced initiatives to use the energy of leach products and gases, there are still reports that those pollutants are running out of control in the dumps, ...

The garbage situation in the U.S. has changed considerably during the past two years. The new situation offers opportunities to grass-roots activists seeking to discourage waste. THE BASIC FACT IS, THE PRICE OF TRASH DISPOSAL IS DROPPING. Philadelphia and Cleveland recently hammered out new long-term garbage contracts that lower their costs 20%.[5] Philadelphias 1988 garbage contract with Waste Management, Inc. locked the city into $67 per ton through 1994. But in March, 1992, Philly signed new contracts for the years 1995-2001 at $50 per ton.[5] Boston recently received bids for the citys garbage disposal at $50 per ton instead of the previous years $70 per ton, a 28% price drop.[5] Pittsburghs contract with Chambers Development is up at the end of 1993 and Pittsburgh officials expect to get a new contract at a price the same or better then the 1993 price of $38.17 per ton.[5] BUT COMMUNITIES WITH INCINERATORS ARE LOCKED INTO HIGH PRICES THEY OFTEN CANT AFFORD. Two Long Island ...

Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Thirty-six states could start shipping loads of radioactive waste through Texas for more than a decade - likely crisscrossing the Metroplex on major highways and train tracks - if they get approval this summer to send their contaminated materials to a West Texas disposal site.. The proposal to allow the states to send low-level waste to a site in Andrews County has prompted concern from some state lawmakers, who worry about the safety of communities along travel routes - including the Interstate 20 corridor through North Texas - and from environmentalists, who worry about radioactive leakage and contamination at the site.. An eight-member commission is expected to take up the issue in coming weeks, considering rules that would govern what materials are accepted and whether dozens of states should be allowed to send radioactive waste to the Waste Control Specialists Texas site owned by Dallas billionaire Harold Simmons.. This could open [Texas] up to not only become ...
Texas Capitol, Extension Auditorium, E1.004. You are invited to attend the press conference as well, held by the SEED Coalition, Public Citizen, and Sierra Club, on stopping Texas from becoming the nations radioactive waste dump, the inadequacies of the west Texas dump site and the corruption surrounding the permitting process.. Thursday, Dec. 10th at 12:30 pm - Texas Capitol, Speakers Committee Room, 2W.6.. * Show your presence and that the public interest matters.. * Tell the Compact Commission not to allow import of radioactive waste into Texas from the rest of the country!. All of the State TCEQ scientists who worked on the permit for the West Texas dump site, owned by Waste Control Specialists (WCS), determined the site to be inadequate because of the possible radioactive contamination of our aquifers and groundwater. Corruption and politics led to the permitting of the site anyways, ignoring the entire TCEQ technical teams recommendation against issuing the permit. 3 TCEQ employees quit ...
As part of an agreement signed by Russia, Norway and the U.S., known as the Arctic Military Environmental Cooperation, Brookhaven engineers are helping Russians to manage low-level radioactive waste that was generated by their program to dismantle nuclear-powered submarines. In the city of Murmansk in northwestern Russia, they recently demonstrated that a polymer sealant, Polihybrid 705, could be used to line a low-level radioactive waste storage facility, preventing radioactive contents from leaching into the ground. Brookhavens collaborator on the project, the Interbranch Coordination Center Nuclide, is collecting and analyzing data on how well the sealant is withstanding arctic and radioactive conditions. Brookhaven and Nuclide engineers will also conduct radiation-protection training sessions for the Russian shipyard workers and Navy personnel engaged in submarine dismantlement activities. This effort will lead to safer radioactive waste management practices in Russia and protect the ...
Electronic waste is a significant part of todays global, post-consumer waste stream. Efforts are being made to recycle and reduce this waste. The Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and Their Disposal, usually known simply as the Basel Convention, is an international treaty that was designed to reduce the movements of hazardous waste between nations, and specifically to prevent transfer of hazardous waste from developed to less developed countries. Of the 172 parties to the Convention, Afghanistan, Haiti, and the United States have signed the Convention but have not yet ratified it. The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) tends to support the repair and recycling trade. Mining to produce the same metals, to meet demand for finished products in the west, also occurs in the same countries, and UNCTAD has recommended that restrictions against recycling exports be balanced against the environmental costs of recovering those ...

Yucca Mountain, Nevada, was designated in 2002 to be the site for the nations first permanent geological repository for spent nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive waste. The process of selecting a site for the repository began nearly 25 years ago with passage of the Nuclear Waste Policy Act in 1982. The Department of Energy (DOE) is responsible for submitting a license application to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for constructing and operating the repository, and DOEs Office of Civilian Radioactive Waste Management (OCRWM) is charged with carrying out this action. The use of multiple natural and engineered barriers in the current repository design are considered by OCRWM to be sufficiently robust to warrant license approval; however, potential design enhancements and increased understanding of both natural and engineered barriers, especially over the long time frames during which the waste is to remain isolated from human contact continue to be examined. The Office of Science and Technology and
Easily track the collection schedule using the Recycle Coach app or the waste collection calendar.. During weeks when leaf and yard waste is not collected, residents should not set their leaf bags to the curb - they will not be collected with regular garbage pickup. Leaf bags should be in paper bags or reusable containers. Leaf and yard waste will not be picked up if its in plastic bags.. This past year, weve asked Cornwallites to be more careful about their waste. The landfill will be full in a little over a decade, said Dave Kuhn, Waste Management Supervisor. We can no longer accept leaf and yard waste in the landfill. This is a reusable material and it needs to be separated.. Leaf and yard waste decomposes at the landfill site (separate from the tipping face, where garbage is dumped). After a year, it turns into rich compost. Residents can pick up the compost for free and use it in their home gardens.. If you havent tried grasscycling yet, this is the year to start, encouraged Kuhn. ...

This document contains the Technical Safety Requirements (TSR) for the Radioactive and Hazardous Waste Management (RHWM) WASTE STORAGE FACILITIES, which include Area 625 (A625) and the Building 693 (B693) Yard Area of the Decontamination and Waste Treatment Facility (DWTF) at LLNL. The TSRs constitute requirements for safe operation of the WASTE STORAGE FACILITIES. These TSRs are derived from the Documented Safety Analyses for the Waste Storage Facilities (DSA) (LLNL 2011). The analysis presented therein concluded that the WASTE STORAGE FACILITIES are low-chemical hazard, Hazard Category 2 non-reactor nuclear facilities. The TSRs consist primarily of inventory limits and controls to preserve the underlying assumptions in the hazard and accident analyses. Further, appropriate commitments to safety programs are presented in the administrative controls sections of the TSRs. The WASTE STORAGE FACILITIES are used by RHWM to handle and store hazardous waste, TRANSURANIC (TRU) WASTE, LOW-LEVEL WASTE ...

a. Disposition of Solid Wastes.. Solid radioactive wastes may be disposed of by burial in the ground, or at sea. In addition, certain items which contain radium such as luminous instrument dials, may be returned to a radium refining company such as the Canadian Uranium and Radium Corporation or the U. S. Radium Corporation, however, if the amounts of such dials do not justify disposition in this manner, they will be disposed of as indicated in the following paragraphs. Waste must be packaged to comply with the regulations of port authorities concerned when moved by water transportation. Personnel transporting waste materials on land and disposing of them at sea must be instructed as to the proper protective measures.. (1) Burial in the Ground.. Burial sites will be located in isolated areas of the installation and in a location identified on appropriate maps. Selection of such sites should be based upon composition of soil, absence of ground water, and the unlikelihood of erosion exposing the ...
Guiyu in the Shantou region of China is a huge electronic waste processing area.[15][20][21] It is often referred to as the e-waste capital of the world. The city employs over 150,000 e-waste workers that work through 16-hour days disassembling old computers and recapturing whatever metals and parts they can reuse or sell. The thousands of individual workshops employ laborers to snip cables, pry chips from circuit boards, grind plastic computer cases into particles, and dip circuit boards in acid baths to dissolve the lead, cadmium, and other toxic metals. Others work to strip insulation from all wiring in an attempt to salvage tiny amounts of copper wire.[22] Uncontrolled burning, disassembly, and disposal causes a variety of environmental problems such as groundwater contamination, atmospheric pollution, or even water pollution either by immediate discharge or due to surface runoff (especially near coastal areas), as well as health problems including occupational safety and health effects ...

Apart from this here are a few tips that people could utilize to assist them with waste around their homes or businesses.. People could create a few individual receptacles to place waste items in according to their nature. A bin for metal, one for boxes another for backyard waste and one more for kitchen waste. This will help to keep waste well organized eliminating bulk and overload. It will also make it easier in terms of collection where waste management personnel can remove trash in an efficient manner.. People should ensure yard waste is free of items such as metal, garbage, soil and stones. Yard waste should really consist of items such as leaves, hedge and tree trimmings, branches, grass clippings house and garden plants. If you have a garden yard waste can be recycled to make mulch or fertilizer.. As for construction and renovation waste these materials require special handling as they can cause injury or serious harm to health if handled incorrectly. They are also not permitted to be ...
JANESVILLE Last weeks holiday garbage collection schedule that included Saturday pickup will be the norm now that the city has an automated trash system.. The overtime pay for Saturdays during holiday weeks totals about $760, said John Whitcomb, city operations director.. Residents have contacted Janesville City Council members with concerns about the new schedule and the overtime, council members said at a recent meeting.. Whitcomb said the decision to extend garbage collection into Saturdays was made to provide consistent service regardless of holidays.. In the past, the city used extra equipment and pulled workers from other jobs during holiday weeks to complete two routes in one day and put collection back on the regular, weekday pickup schedule.. The city was able to do that because it used extra rear-load vehicles normally deployed during loose-leaf collection and bagged yard waste collection. Playing catch-up sometimes resulted in overtime but sometime did not, Whitcomb said.. That ...
Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions represent the single most significant contributing factor to global climate change.* As such, substantial reduction of GHG emissions is crucial to address this challenge. For over a decade, Clorox has made meaningful, significant strides in this area, and we are committed to doing much more.. Between 2007† and 2019, we reduced our GHG emissions by 56% on an intensity basis (per case of product sold) and 46% on an absolute basis. This represents a reduction of 450,000 metric tons of GHG emissions.. For our 2020 goal period, we targeted a reduction of our GHG emissions by 20% (per case of product sold), using 2011 as our baseline. We achieved this goal ahead of target, reducing our GHG emissions by 33% on an intensity basis (per case of product sold), and by 25% on an absolute basis, all by 2018. This represents a reduction of 189,000 metric tons of GHG emissions between 2011 and 2018.. ...
Many times, when someone is involved in a terrible workplace accident and is seriously injured or sees another coworker become injured or killed, the effect of the accident will remain with them for years. Many of the men and women who are involved in a workplace accident do not realize that beyond physical damages, they may be able to file a claim for their PTSD as well.. If you have witnessed or have been a part of a tragic work accident, you may want to speak to your doctor about possible PTSD. PTSD can manifest in harmful physical symptoms over time, and the mental anguish can often rob a person of their ability to work. PTSD is a condition that requires care and treatment just as a burn or broken bone would, and if your PTSD is the result of a work accident, you deserve to receive benefits that allow you to seek help.. If you are concerned that you may be suffering from PTSD, you must act quickly to ensure that you do not miss any workers compensation claim filing deadlines. While PTSD can ...
