Rapid economic growth, urbanisation and increasing population have caused (materially intensive) resource consumption to increase, and consequently the release of large amounts of waste to the environment. Numerous technological and operational approaches to resource management have been introduced throughout the system of production, consumption and waste management. This thesis concludes that the current, rather isolated, efforts to influence different systems for waste management, waste reduction and resource management are indeed not sufficient from a long-term sustainability perspective. To manage resources and waste sustainably, resource management requires a more systems-oriented approach, which addresses the root causes of the problems.. This thesis identifies and discusses different sustainability challenges facing the global waste management system. To address these challenges a broader systems approach to waste management is proposed. The thesis argues that there is a need to ...

Assessment of waste management technology using BATNEEC options, technology quality method and multi-criteria analysis: ". http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.jenvman.2010.12.016. Abstract: Best Available Techniques Not Entailing Excessive Costs (BATNEEC) options, technology quality method and multi-criteria analysis were proposed as means of developing indices for evaluating municipal waste management systems. The proposed indices can be treated as a tool for ranking the system taking into account technical, environmental, economic, social and other objectives, bearing in mind specific features of the area involved. The analysis was made for three different incineration plants (Spittelau in Vienna, Warsaw and Tarnobrzeg) together with alternative waste disposal versions (with or without biogas burning and with MBP Mechanical-Biological Process) and the waste management infrastructure. The results showed that incineration of waste is much more beneficial than disposal. These results conform to the waste ...

There is a growing understanding, at the global level, about the negative impacts that waste can have on the local environment (air, water, land) and human health etc. The increasing complexity, costs, and coordination implied by proper waste management require multi-stakeholder involvement at every stage of the process. Waste management is usually one of the most complex and cost-intensive public services, even when well organized and operated properly. In developing countries, waste management has the highest share in municipalities׳ budgets, spending from 20% to 50% of their available budget on solid waste management. A significant part (up to 80-90%) of the solid waste management budget is used for waste collection. Services typically cover, however, only about 40-70% of all urban solid wastes, with the remainder being uncollected and less than 50% of the population being served.. Population growth, urbanization, and economic development are expected to produce increasing quantities of ...

A lot has been said, written, and demonstrated about the inadequacies in solid waste management and its associated problems. According to a United Nations Conference on Human Settlement report, one third to one-half of solid waste generated within most cities in low- and middle-income countries, of which Ghana is no exception, are not collected. They usually end up as illegal dumps on streets, open spaces, and waste lands (UNCHS 1996).. Despite the importance of adequate solid waste management to the urban environment, the performance of many city authorities in this respect leaves much to be desired. According to Malombe (1993), irregular services rendered to producers of refuse by municipal councils compel them to find ways of disposing of refuse. He observed that the main methods adopted by the producers are burning, composting, or indiscriminate dumping.. This is very pertinent in Ghana where waste management services are largely inefficient and ineffective. It is estimated that about 83% of ...
In the north Front Range region, responsible solid waste management has long been a shared goal of the governing agencies within Larimer County. The sister cities of Loveland and Fort Collins collaborated with the County to open a jointly owned landfill (5887 N. Taft Hill Rd) in 1972 to ensure environmental regulations can be met for trash disposal in our region. With a closure date for the Larimer County landfill approaching (2025), these partners plus the neighboring community of Estes Park are once again working together, to evaluate waste management needs and develop guidance plans into the next 50-100 years.. The Coalition was formed in 2015 to address the future of solid waste management in light of the upcoming Larimer County landfill closure. The Coalition includes a Policy Advisory Committee (PAC) made up of elected officials from Fort Collins, Loveland, Estes Park, and Larimer County, and a Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) made up of staff members from the same entities.. The current ...
I worked in a wastewater treatment plant (Jan. 2000 until Feb. 2002) that processed class A (alkaline stabilization) and class B (lime addition but no heat treatment) sludge and occasionally processed sludge as controlled waste (no lime or heat) in a poorly ventilated facility. There were 5 operators running the sewage processing, two of the 5 operators have become chronically ill (myself and my co-worker, Mr. Dean Richardsen) with very serious symptoms. Mr. Richardsen and I have ongoing claims with the Workers Compensation Board, both of us have very similar health complaints including but not limited to the following symptoms reported to my physician Dr. Julianna Losier MD CCFP in late 2002. Here is a quote from a letter written by her to the compensation board.. Mr. Bruce was in extremely good health prior to working at the Saanich Peninsula Wastewater Treatment Plant. He has developed a number of serious symptoms since starting work at the plant. His major predominant symptoms were ...
By Adnan Prekic - Podgorica Waste management is one of the biggest environmental problems in Montenegro. Apart from the capital Podgorica, almost every other city in Montenegro is having problems with the storage of waste. Therefore, the recycling industry is one of the very few that has great potential. Montenegro is recycling only 5% of the waste, while the European average is above 50%. The problem of solid waste management has been recognized in the EU accession process. The Montenegrin Government therefore prepared an action plan, acconrding to which, by 2020 it plans to fulfill the obligations of recycling 50 percent of the total amount of paper and cardboard, plastic, metal and glass from waste and other sources that generate wastes similar to municipal waste. Part of European legislation defining the responsibilities when it comes to the amount of waste that needs to be recycled is fully transferred to the Montenegrin Law on Waste Management and the relevant laws. For the implementation of the
The past five years have witnessed a remarkable transition in the pace and scope of waste management activities at SRS. At the start of the new M&O contract in 1996, little was being done with the waste generated at the site apart from storing it in readiness for future treatment and disposal. Large volumes of legacy waste, particularly TRU and Low Level Waste, had accumulated over many years of operation of the sites nuclear facilities, and the backlog was increasing. WSRC proposed the use of the talents of the best in class partners for the new contract which, together with a more commercial approach, was expected to deliver more results without a concomitant increase in cost. This paper charts the successes in the Solid Waste arena and analyzes the basis for success.

There seems to be progress in the program kickstarted by the Badung government that aims to have each district manage their own waste. Through the Environment and Sanitation Agency (DLHK), the local government has created a waste management pilot project which will then be implemented by all village-owned enterprises (BUMDes).. Putu Eka Merthawan, Head of DLHK, said that the project has been implemented in Seminyak and Kuta, and in fact, the effort is already part of the local law. "We have collaborated with people from the village of Seminyak to implement the pilot project," said Merthawan, as quoted by Bali Post. "All the waste produced by hotels, restaurants, and residents must be managed by the newly formed final waste disposal facility, TPST Seminyak Clean.". Seminyak Clean is run professionally by people from Seminyak village. "The trash is managed by the village. And residents of the village, as well as hotels, restaurants, and other business must adhere to the new rule," Merthawan ...

This research seeks to provide a characterization of catalytic gasification reaction mechanisms for different polymers and catalyst types. While catalytic gasification of waste polymers has significance in a variety of engineering applications, it is of particular relevance to in-situ resource utilization (ISRU) and waste management in space exploration beyond low earth orbit (LEO).. NASA Glenn Research Center seeks solutions to the logistical costs of transporting waste back to Earth as well as the need for propellant generation technologies that can be operated on the lunar surface, an asteroid, or on the International Space Station. Low-to-mid temperature catalytic gasification presents a potential solution to both of these challenges. The carbon content of the plastics, paper, and nylon often disposed of on the ISS can serve as the raw material for the generation of fuel (methane). Long missions beyond LEO will not be possible without technologies that can reduce the dependence on logistic ...

Waste costs the National Health Service (NHS) £71.2 million in 2007/2008; recycling all papers, newspapers and cardboard produced by the NHS in England and Wales could save up to 42,000 tonnes of CO2. As the largest employer in the UK, the NHS is in a prime position to both lead the way towards a sustainable future, but also act as a test bed for organizational change and provide evidence of what works at an individual level to change attitudes and behavior. However these require changes in mindset, including values, attitudes, norms and behaviors which are required along with clear definitions of the problems faced in terms of economics, society and culture. Initial investigations of the literature indicate that behavior change theory may provide a feasible means of achieving constructive changes in clinical waste management; such approaches require further investigation. This paper describes a feasibility study designed to examine issues that might affect the introduction of a behavior change

In this lecture, Dr Matthias Franke will discuss the global challenges and opportunities of waste management, and its growing role as a supplier of raw materials for industry and energy production. He will also discuss the development of a national waste management strategy for the Gulf region, a technical solution for recovery of critical elements, and solutions for powder recycling from Additive Manufacturing.. The global practice of waste management varies significantly between countries. On one hand, many countries in Europe and beyond still have high volumes of waste that are dumped untreated. On the other, progressive industrial nations, with an advanced waste management infrastructure, try to cover their demand for critical elements and materials by recovery from waste. However, the growing complexity of modern high-tech products and composite materials requires innovative concepts, and technical solutions for a sufficient recycling.. Major pollution problem being faced by small scale process industries is the treatment solid and sludge waste. The use of waste as brick material would be a solution to solid waste management, alternative raw material and an additional source of revenue. The raw materials used here are otherwise land filled and thus add to ever escalating cost of land. In India annual production of cellulosic product recycle industry is 2.345 Million tons and waste generated thereof is 15%. The annual consumption of fibrous cellulosic product is 6 million tons and waste generated thereof is 2%. The bricks thus manufactured using these wastes are lightweight with presence of tiny air pockets inside to help in thermal insulation and shock absorption. The buildings made from such bric-ks would thus be resistant to earthquakes and can be used in earthquake-prone regions. The present invention therefore describes manufacture of high strength building, bricks and blocks of precise dimensions and desired properties ...
