The King County Wastewater Treatment Division protects public health and our regional waterways by safely transporting and treating wastewater from much of King, south Snohomish, and parts of Pierce counties. Over 350 miles of pipes carry wastewater from areas as far north as Mill Creek, east as Black Diamond, west as Vashon Island, and south as Lake Tapps. Thirty-four local sewer districts within the wastewater service area own and operate local collection systems and send wastewater to King Countys larger pipelines. Local agencies are responsible for billing residents for wastewater collection and treatment.. Sometimes, sewer odors may come from your local system not the King County system. Each district is responsible for maintaining its system and controlling odors. Many King County sewer maintenance holes have METRO on the lid. If you wish to identify which sewer agency serves you, look on your sewer bill. Call your agency if there are odors near your house.. ...

The interview was conducted by Karen Lynn Maher in Kirkland, Washington, on February 15, 2002.. Maher: How did you become involved with Group Health?. Davis: My wife and I had belonged to Group Health Cooperative in Washington, D.C. before World War II and our first child was born in a hospital in D.C. I remember that she [my wife] was in a ward with twelve people in it. The first day we went in, the baby wasnt ready to come and she went home. We had to come back that night and at that time, there was no bed available in a ward; she was in a hospital bed in a corridor. Our daughter Judy was born successfully. When I came back from the war and we moved to Seattle, we learned there was talk about forming one ...

Given that the Washington State Department of Healths mission statement includes:. Leading changes in policies, systems and environments to prevent illness and injury. And considering that all pertussis-containing (whooping cough) vaccines including the DPT, DTaP, and TdaP vaccines have been found to create asymptomatic carriers, increase strain mutation and strain replacement, and effectiveness is decreased with subsequent vaccinations (see http://informedchoicewa.com/ for an in-depth video and links to all references cited ),. And considering that every day that passes in which the general public is unaware of these facts, and every day that vaccine providers, clinics, and hospitals require or recommend cocooning puts vulnerable populations at risk,. We, the undersigned, respectfully request that the DOH immediately:. 1. Form a Special Advisory Committee to examine in-depth the pertussis dilemma.. 2. Inform the public and all vaccination providers of the risk of asymptomatic transmission, ...
Olympia - In light of some concerns from the public regarding two recent job postings by the Washington State Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF), the agency would like to clarify the intent of these job listings and address misinformation spreading as a result of the job description.
A newborn baby in King County died last week from pertussis, the infection commonly known as whooping cough.. King County Public Health reports the infant died on Dec. 13, though further details have not been released to protect the familys privacy. This is the first person in King County to die from pertussis in 2012. To date, there have been 752 reported cases of the infection since Jan. 1.. The health department is urging residents, especially pregnant mothers, to get the pertussis vaccine. For healthy adults, the infection most typically results in cold- or flu-like symptoms without serious side effects. But for infants, pertussis can be fatal. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends that pregnant women get the Tdap vaccine between their 27th and 36th weeks to protect their babies. The vaccine provides a temporary immunity for infants until they are old enough to be vaccinated themselves, typically at 2 months of age. Still, only 5 percent of pregnant women in the country get the ...

In addition to the increase in overdoses cited above, Banta-Green said researchers also see signs that heroin use is increasing among young adults and across the state. More specifically, prescription-type opiate-involved deaths continued to increase in King County in 2009, accounting for 160 out of 253 drug overdoses. This compares with 21 prescription-type opiate deaths in 1997. • 83 percent of these deaths in 2009 involved another substance, most often prescription-type anti-anxiety medicines (e.g. Valium, Xanax). • One in four of the deaths also involved an illegal drug; almost half of those who died were women. • Other indicators in the report show the impact of prescription-type opiates in both King County and throughout the rest of the state. More than half of those entering treatment for addiction to prescription-type opiates are between the ages of 18 to 29, for example, with 440 young adults entering treatment in King County alone in 2009. Researchers also found that young adult ...

King County Executive Dow Constantine: Tell Sister City, Hwaseong, South Korea, That Were Opposed to the Torture and Consumption of Dogs and Cats.. King County, we need to make you aware of the illegal and immoral dog and cat meat trade operating within the boundaries of your Sister city, Hwaseong, South Korea. We urge you to take action, set the right example and work with us to change this.. South Korea is the home to global companies, such as Hyundai, Kia, Samsung, LG, Daewoo, SK and POSCO, which is why it is so shocking that an estimated 2.5 million dogs are tortured and slaughtered every year within South Korea, because of the greed of dog eaters and the dog meat industry; while the majority of those Koreans, who dont actually participate in this offensive trade, show a profound indifference by doing nothing at all to stop it.. We know how loyal and faithful our dogs across the world are; and we all ask a lot of them - they serve us in innumerable ways: farm work, war work, police and ...

by Connie Sullivan, Soundkeeper Science and Education Coordinator. Have you ever seen a fishing vessel going by you while youre on the ferry in Puget Sound? Have you ever wondered what they were doing, or how they were doing it? Well contrary to what you might be thinking, they may not even be fishing-at least not with the classical endpoint in mind! They could actually be out there doing critical research to track the health and recovery of Puget Sound.. And that ferry wake behind you? Makes for a rocking good time while doing all that work!. In 1989, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife began a sampling program for English sole as an indicator of toxics in Puget Sound. These data are used by the Puget Sound Partnership to track the recovery of Puget Sound via their Vital Signs Indicators. English sole are bottom-dwelling fish that dont migrate too far from one spot, so they are ideal study organisms to get a handle on localized pollution. And because the sole live close to ...

Epidemiologic studies suggest that occupational exposure to pesticides might increase Parkinson disease risk. Some pesticides, such as the organophosphorus insecticide chlorpyrifos, appear to increase the expression of α-synuclein, a protein critically involved in Parkinson disease. Therefore, we assessed total blood cell α-synuclein in 90 specimens from 63 agricultural pesticide handlers, mainly Hispanic men from central Washington State, who participated in the state's cholinesterase monitoring program in 2007-2010. Additionally, in age-adjusted linear regression models for repeated measures, we assessed whether α-synuclein levels were associated with butyrylcholinesterase-chlorpyrifos adducts or cholinesterase inhibition measured in peripheral blood, or with self-reported pesticide exposure or paraoxonase (PON1) genotype. There was no evidence by any of those indicators that exposure to chlorpyrifos was associated with greater blood α-synuclein. We observed somewhat greater ...
Applicability/Scope House Bill 2426 increases the DOHs oversight and enforcement tools over psychiatric hospitals. However, both the legislature and the DOH intend to expand oversight and enforcement tools to other health care facilities, including acute care hospitals (those licensed under chapter 70.41 RCW).. Recommendation. Review the bulletin and share with appropriate staff. Please engage with WSHA once the DOH begins its rulemaking process regarding civil fines.. Overview - Key Elements of New Law Background. In 2019, the Seattle Times published a series of articles highlighting patient safety and quality of care issues at psychiatric hospitals licensed under chapter 71.12 RCW. In response, the DOH cited a lack of oversight and enforcement tools over the hospitals. As a result, Governor Inslee requested that the legislature address this in the 2020 legislative session. With legislative interest in the House and the Senate, a bill was introduced in each chamber, which called for expanding ...

The Home Safety Project was a population-based case control study of homicide in the home with control households matched to cases by victim age range, race, gender, and neighborhood (a proxy for socioeconomic status). The study was conducted in the following locations: Shelby County, Tennessee (August 23, 1987-August 23, 1992), King County, Washington (August 23, 1987-August 23, 1992), and Cuyahoga County, Ohio (January 1, 1990-August 23, 1992). The purpose of the data collection was to study risk and protective factors for homicide in the home and to identify individual and household factors associated with homicide (both behavioral and environmental). Respondents were asked a series of questions related to alcohol consumption, such as whether drinking ever created problems between household members, whether any household members had had trouble at work because of drinking, whether any physical fights or other violence had occurred in the home or outside the home due to drinking, and whether ...

The Central Washington Recovery Coalition is open to anyone who has struggled with addiction or has a family member who has struggled with addiction. The 1988 United States presidential election in Washington took place on November 8, 1988. All fifty states and the District of Columbia, were part of the 1988 United States presidential election. Washington voters chose ten electors to the Electoral College, which selected the president and vice president. Washington State was won by Democratic Massachusetts Governor Michael Dukakis, who was running against incumbent Republican Vice President George H. W. Bush of Texas. Dukakis ran with Texas Senator Lloyd Bentsen, and Bush ran with Indiana Senator Dan Quayle. Dukakis carried Washington state with 50.05 percent of the vote to Bushs 48.46 percent, a margin of 1.59%. This made Washington one of ten states (along with the District of Columbia) to vote for Dukakis, even as Bush won a convincing victory nationally. Washington weighed in for this election as over 9 percent more Democratic than the national average. For decades prior to 1988, Washington had been a swing state, and it had gone ...
On Tuesday, Backus said she hoped that there wouldnt be an excessive number of sub-regional plans, but argued that relatively affordable cities in South King County require a different approach than a large, expensive city like Seattle, particularly when it comes to keep people from becoming homeless in the first place.. Ive often said that what works in Auburn wont work in Seattle, and what works in Seattle wont work in Bellevue, Backus said. Those differences, she said, include things like the new criminal penalty for sleeping in public spaces-a proposal that likely wouldnt fly in Seattle, and was controversial even in Auburn. Backus said members of the Puyallup Tribe have complained that garbage from encampments in wetlands are getting caught in their fish traps, for example. Its not OK. We are damaging the land, Backus said.. The hotels, which will eventually increase the countys shelter capacity by 1,600 rooms, arent going to provide enough rooms to bring the 7,000 or so ...

In June 2012, the Oregon Health Authority and the Washington State Department of Health noted an increase in the number of Salmonella enterica serotype Heidelberg clinical isolates sharing an identical pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) pattern. In 2004, this pattern had been linked to chicken from Foster Farms by the Washington State Department of Health; preliminary 2012 interviews with infected persons also indicated exposure to Foster Farms chicken. On August 2, 2012, CDCs PulseNet* detected a cluster of 19 Salmonella Heidelberg clinical isolates matching the outbreak pattern. This report summarizes the investigation by CDC, state and local health departments, the U.S. Department of Agricultures Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA-FSIS), and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and reinforces the importance of safe food handling to prevent illness. A total of 134 cases from 13 states were identified, including 33 patients who were hospitalized. This multifaceted investigation ...

PURPOSE: To analyze genetic clinic utilization in Washington State and to explore factors associated with utilization. METHODS: Our analysis included data from the 9 of 15 genetic clinics that consistently reported to the Washington State Minimum Data Set between 1995 and 2004. Prenatal genetics services were excluded. We described utilization with yearly counts of patients and analyze patient volume according to age, sex, and residence. RESULTS: The total number of patients at nine genetic clinics in Washington increased from 1804 patients in 1995 to 3536 patients in 2004 with growth increasing at an average 8% each year. Although adults aged 35 years and over comprised 14% of all patients in 1995, they comprised almost 28% in 2004. The number of females aged 35 years and older increased markedly during this time frame. CONCLUSION: Nine genetic clinics in Washington experienced growth in utilization and changes in the mix of patients served between 1995 and 2004. We suggest further study of how ...
SEATTLE (AP) - The first word Seattle political consultant Dayna Lurie had that someone filed for unemployment benefits in her name was when her boss called.. Did you quit without telling me? he asked. We got an unemployment form from the state of Washington saying you dont work here anymore.. It turned out that, like thousands of Washington state residents, Luries identity was used by criminals seeking to capitalize on a flood of legitimate unemployment claims by sneaking in fraudulent ones.. Washingtons race to help newly laid-off residents as the coronavirus pandemic ravaged the economy left it vulnerable to such scams, and last week officials hinted at the scope of the damage done: hundreds of millions of dollars paid out in fake claims. Much of it apparently went to a West African fraud ring using identities stolen in prior data breaches, such as the massive 2017 Equifax breach.. State and federal authorities have tried to claw back as much money as possible and say they have blocked ...
