This is an oral history of Aubrey Davis, a member of Group Health Cooperatives Board of Trustees for 38 years, President of the Cooperative for seven terms (1953, 1963, 1964, 1968, 1969, 1984, 1985), Chair of the Cooperative for one term (1986), president and CEO for three years (1988-1991). The interview was conducted by Karen Lynn Maher in Kirkland, Washington, on February 15, 2002.. Maher: How did you become involved with Group Health?. Davis: My wife and I had belonged to Group Health Cooperative in Washington, D.C. before World War II and our first child was born in a hospital in D.C. I remember that she [my wife] was in a ward with twelve people in it. The first day we went in, the baby wasnt ready to come and she went home. We had to come back that night and at that time, there was no bed available in a ward; she was in a hospital bed in a corridor. Our daughter Judy was born successfully. When I came back from the war and we moved to Seattle, we learned there was talk about forming one ...

Given that the Washington State Department of Healths mission statement includes:. "Leading changes in policies, systems and environments to prevent illness and injury". And considering that all pertussis-containing (whooping cough) vaccines including the DPT, DTaP, and TdaP vaccines have been found to create asymptomatic carriers, increase strain mutation and strain replacement, and effectiveness is decreased with subsequent vaccinations (see http://informedchoicewa.com/ for an in-depth video and links to all references cited ),. And considering that every day that passes in which the general public is unaware of these facts, and every day that vaccine providers, clinics, and hospitals require or recommend "cocooning" puts vulnerable populations at risk,. We, the undersigned, respectfully request that the DOH immediately:. 1. Form a Special Advisory Committee to examine in-depth the pertussis dilemma.. 2. Inform the public and all vaccination providers of the risk of asymptomatic transmission, ...
In addition to the increase in overdoses cited above, Banta-Green said researchers also see signs that heroin use is increasing among young adults and across the state. More specifically, prescription-type opiate-involved deaths continued to increase in King County in 2009, accounting for 160 out of 253 drug overdoses. This compares with 21 prescription-type opiate deaths in 1997. • 83 percent of these deaths in 2009 involved another substance, most often prescription-type anti-anxiety medicines (e.g. Valium, Xanax). • One in four of the deaths also involved an illegal drug; almost half of those who died were women. • Other indicators in the report show the impact of prescription-type opiates in both King County and throughout the rest of the state. More than half of those entering treatment for addiction to prescription-type opiates are between the ages of 18 to 29, for example, with 440 young adults entering treatment in King County alone in 2009. Researchers also found that young adult ...

"Count Us In," is the King County Committee to End Homelessness annual effort to gather information about the number of local 12- to 25-years-olds who cant count on steady housing. This years 777 total includes young people who are in danger of losing their place to stay, as well as those living in transitional housing, sleeping in shelter beds, or places like cars, parks or abandoned buidlings.. King County Executive Dow Constantine: Tell Sister City, Hwaseong, South Korea, That Were Opposed to the Torture and Consumption of Dogs and Cats.. King County, we need to make you aware of the illegal and immoral dog and cat meat trade operating within the boundaries of your Sister city, Hwaseong, South Korea. We urge you to take action, set the right example and work with us to change this.. South Korea is the home to global companies, such as Hyundai, Kia, Samsung, LG, Daewoo, SK and POSCO, which is why it is so shocking that an estimated 2.5 million dogs are tortured and slaughtered every year within South Korea, because of the greed of dog eaters and the dog meat industry; while the majority of those Koreans, who dont actually participate in this offensive trade, show a profound indifference by doing nothing at all to stop it.. We know how loyal and faithful our dogs across the world are; and we all ask a lot of them - they serve us in innumerable ways: farm work, war work, police and ...

by Connie Sullivan, Soundkeeper Science and Education Coordinator. Have you ever seen a fishing vessel going by you while youre on the ferry in Puget Sound? Have you ever wondered what they were doing, or how they were doing it? Well contrary to what you might be thinking, they may not even be fishing-at least not with the classical endpoint in mind! They could actually be out there doing critical research to track the health and recovery of Puget Sound.. And that ferry wake behind you? Makes for a rocking good time while doing all that work!. In 1989, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife began a sampling program for English sole as an indicator of toxics in Puget Sound. These data are used by the Puget Sound Partnership to track the recovery of Puget Sound via their Vital Signs Indicators. English sole are bottom-dwelling fish that dont migrate too far from one spot, so they are ideal study organisms to get a handle on localized pollution. And because the sole live close to ...

Epidemiologic studies suggest that occupational exposure to pesticides might increase Parkinson disease risk. Some pesticides, such as the organophosphorus insecticide chlorpyrifos, appear to increase the expression of α-synuclein, a protein critically involved in Parkinson disease. Therefore, we assessed total blood cell α-synuclein in 90 specimens from 63 agricultural pesticide handlers, mainly Hispanic men from central Washington State, who participated in the state's cholinesterase monitoring program in 2007-2010. Additionally, in age-adjusted linear regression models for repeated measures, we assessed whether α-synuclein levels were associated with butyrylcholinesterase-chlorpyrifos adducts or cholinesterase inhibition measured in peripheral blood, or with self-reported pesticide exposure or paraoxonase (PON1) genotype. There was no evidence by any of those indicators that exposure to chlorpyrifos was associated with greater blood α-synuclein. We observed somewhat greater ...

Acrolein is an aquatic herbicide used in the western United States to prevent impaired water flow in irrigation canals. Despite its toxicity, few cases of acrolein-related illness have been reported in the literature. On August 15, 2012, an irrigation district notified the Washington State Department of Labor & Industries (L&I) of acrolein-related illness in one of its pesticide applicators. L&I inspected the site and interviewed the exposed worker, coworkers, and employer. The Washington State Department of Health assisted by obtaining medical records, interviewing the patient and hospital staff, and reviewing information obtained from L&I. To look for additional cases, CDC reviewed data from the SENSOR-Pesticides program* and the California Department of Pesticide Regulation for 1993-2009, the most recent years of data availability, and identified seven additional cases of acute acrolein-related illness.

PORT GAMBLE - Equipment is rolling in by land and water this week as workers prepare to remove decades-old contaminated sediments and other materials from Port Gamble Bay. Contractor Orion Marine Group will launch a major cleanup project Monday by starting to pull old, creosote-treated pilings out of the water. Pope Resources is responsible for the cleanup under the Washington Department of Ecologys oversight. Cleanup work is scheduled to continue into early 2017. The project will remove about 6,000 pilings from water and land, and demolish piers, docks and other structures. About 70,000 cubic yards of wood waste and contaminated sediments will be either dug up and removed, or capped with clean material. Marine habitat impacted by the cleanup will be restored. For more than 140 years, the now-defunct Pope & Talbot Inc. used the site to manufacture wood products. Pope Resources was created in 1985 when Pope & Talbot spun off its timberland and development properties in Washington. Pope Resources ...
EVERETT - A proposed legal agreement is designed to shape a major cleanup project that will address decades-old contamination in Everetts East Waterway, part of Port Gardner Bay. Historical industrial activities deposited contamination - including various chemicals and metals - into and near the waterway.. The public can comment on the legal agreement that includes Kimberly-Clark Corp., which operated a now-closed pulp-and-paper mill adjacent to the East Waterway; the Port of Everett, which owns tidelands in the waterway; the Washington Department of Natural Resources, which also owns tidelands; and the Washington Department of Ecology. A public comment period runs through July 30. Ecology also will hold a public meeting on July 14 at Everett Station so people can learn more and ask questions about eventual waterway cleanup. Comments are also invited on a draft public participation plan that explains how people can learn about steps in the cleanup process and how to participate.. The draft ...

Several areas affected by the wildfires are experiencing electrical outages that may cause water systems to lose pressure and may allow harmful contaminants into water lines, said the Washington State Department of Health. Residents who have lost water pressure should boil their tap water when service is restored. Guidance for customers of affected water systems can be found online.. In order to kill germs, water should be heated to a brisk boil for one minute and allowed to cool before use, the department advises. The boil-water advisory remains in effect until tests show the water is safe to drink. People who are unsure about whether their water is safe to drink should contact their water system.. The department said its also important that people in wildfire areas pay attention to current air quality information, which can be found on the Washington State Department of Ecologys website. Breathing smoke from wildfires can make anyone cough or wheeze, and people who have asthma or another ...

The executive said he has directed elections director Dean Logan to prepare by Jan. 31 a comprehensive plan and timetable for an all-mail ballot system for King Countys 1.2 million registered voters. Sims said election officials are looking at incorporating in the balloting a signature-verification system like that used by banks as well as a tracking system to enable voters to monitor ballots as they move through the mail and confirm when they have been received and counted. [...] Sims and Patterson said the investment would be offset by savings from the current system, which requires staffing 515 polling places and training nearly 4,000 election workers. State Republican Party Chairman Chris Vance, who like other GOP leaders has harshly criticized King Countys mistakes in the 2004 general election, issued a statement saying, Republicans oppose an all-mail ballot system in King County. Vance said King County has not demonstrated it can accurately account for all absentee ballots, its signature

King Countys program to employ people with disabilities in county jobs was one example of how the three key factors -- leadership, relationships, and advocacy -- worked together to increase opportunities for integrated employment. It is also an example of the level of information diffusion across the state. At the time of the research, similar initiatives were active in other counties and within state government positions.. Inspired by a Larry Rhodes article that noted that over 10% of non-agriculture jobs were in the public sector, in 1989 ONeill and Associates submitted a grant application to the Rehabilitation Services Administration to develop public sector jobs for people with significant disabilities. These jobs were to be concentrated in King County government because of the availability of high-paying jobs with benefits. With the political assistance of a King County Councilor, the County approved a resolution to encourage county departments to hire people with developmental ...

Seattle has a warm-temperate climate.[87][88][89], [90][91] It has mild, wet winters and mild, relatively dry summers.[92][93] The city and environs are part of USDA hardiness zone 8b, with isolated coastal pockets falling under 9a.[94]. Temperature extremes are moderated by the adjacent Puget Sound, greater Pacific Ocean, and Lake Washington. Thus extreme heat waves are rare in the Seattle area, as are very cold temperatures (below about 15 °F (−9 °C)). The Seattle area is the most cloudy region of the United States, due in part to frequent storms and lows moving in from the adjacent Pacific Ocean. Despite having a reputation for frequent rain, Seattle receives less precipitation than many other U.S. cities like Chicago or New York City. However, unlike many other U.S. cities, Seattle has many more "rain days", when a very light drizzle falls from the sky for many days.[95] In an average year, at least 0.01 inches (0.25 mm) of precipitation falls on 150 days, more than nearly all U.S. ...

Opioids like heroin, fentanyl and oxycodone account for six of 10 drug overdose deaths in America, according to the National Conference of State Legislators. From 2012-16, 995 people in King County died from opioid overdoses, according to the Washington State Department of Health.. RELATED: WSU needs pot-smoking volunteers for breathalyzer study. At a summit discussing the states opioid epidemic last week, experts made sure to emphasize that while naloxone isnt a silver bullet to combat opioid addiction, it can save lives -- at least in the short run.. "Its a great intervention," said Caleb Banta-Green of the University of Washingtons School of Public Health. "But its not a complete intervention.". The drugs generally kill by slowing the bodys breathing, which can lead to a fatal heart arrhythmia. Naloxone attaches to the same brain receptors as opioids, usually restoring normal breathing within minutes. The effects can last for more than an hour, giving first responders valuable time to ...
By Kim Krisberg. In Washington state, its not entirely unusual for tiny clusters of foodborne illness to pop up throughout a given year. But in mid-2015, when reports of Salmonella clusters began popping up one right after another across multiple counties, public health workers knew they had a bigger problem on their hands.. Eventually, with the help of the nationwide lab network known as PulseNet, state and local public health investigators were able to connect the nearly two-dozen Salmonella clusters and trace the source to contaminated pork from Washington-based Kapowsin Meats, which ended up recalling more than 116,000 pounds of whole pigs and more than 523,000 pounds of pork products. But solving this outbreak came with a number of twists and turns, with public health workers first suspecting an entirely different culprit - beef.. "At the beginning, we werent sure what was making people sick," said Ailyn Pérez-Osorio, PhD, molecular epidemiologist in the Washington State Department of ...
Slip and fall accidents are commonplace, but the injuries can be devastating, particularly for older adults.. The Washington State Department of Social & Health Services recommends, "If you do fall, try to land on your buttocks to prevent more serious injuries. Try not to land on a hip. Stay calm. Take a few deep breaths and see if you have been hurt at all...If you are concerned that you may not have the ability to get yourself up from a fall, talk with your doctor.". Under Washington State personal injury laws, both the property owner and the person who is walking on the property have an obligation to avoid situations that might lead to an accident. For the property owner, this means that hazards, such as spilled liquids, an icy sidewalk or stairs in need of repair, should be remedied as quickly as possible. For you, this means paying attention to where you are walking and avoiding spots that look like they might potential prove dangerous.. ...

Estimating a populations growth rate and year-to-year variance is a key component of population viability analysis (PVA). However, standard PVA methods require time series of counts obtained using consistent survey methods over many years. The authors of this study used REEF data along with two other fisheries datasets to evaluate the long-term trends of rockfish in Puget Sound, Washington State. The time-series analysis was performed with a multivariate autoregressive state-space (MARSS) model. The authors show that using a MARSS modeling approach can provide a rigorous statistical framework for solving some of the challenges associated with using multiple, sometimes inconsistent datasets, and can reduce the proportion of fisheries assessment cases that are assigned a designation of "data deficient.". The analysis of the paper was part of the 5-year review of the Endangered Species Act (ESA) listing of Puget Sound populations of three rockfish species (Bocaccio, Canary Rockfish, and Yelloweye ...

The University of Washington - Beyond High School (UW-BHS) project surveyed students in Washington State to examine factors impacting educational attainment and the transition to adulthood among high school seniors. The project began in 1999 in an effort to assess the impact of I-200 (the referendum that ended Affirmative Action) on minority enrollment in higher education in Washington. The research objectives of the project were: (1) to describe and explain differences in the transition from high school to college by race and ethnicity, socioeconomic origins, and other characteristics, (2) to evaluate the impact of the Washington State Achievers Program, and (3) to explore the implications of multiple race and ethnic identities. Following a successful pilot survey in the spring of 2000, the project eventually included baseline and one-year follow-up surveys (conducted in 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2005) of almost 10,000 high school seniors in five cohorts across several Washington school districts. ...

DEERFIELD, Ill., May 06, 2015 - Walgreens continues to offer vaccinations that provide protection against pertussis (whooping cough) at all of its more than 130 pharmacies throughout the state, as the Washington State Department of Health is urging vaccination with the state reaching more than four times the number of reported whooping cough cases compared to the same time last year. Vaccinations are available daily during all pharmacy hours with no appointment necessary and are covered by most insurance plans.. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), whooping cough is a highly contagious respiratory tract infection primarily affecting young children. Teens and adults whose immunity has faded are also at risk. The Department of Health says there have been more than 380 cases of whooping cough reported compared to 85 reported cases during the same time in 20141.. "We support the recommendations of health officials and stress that vaccination is the best protection ...
Spokane County was created by legislative act four times. Twice it was not organized by the agents appointed for that purpose. Once it had, after organization, a short and precarious existance, and was merged into Stevens county. From a manuscript by W.P. Winans, who served two terms, beginning in 1862, as auditor of the original county of Spokane, when the county seat was Pinkney City. With free-handed disregard of actual needs and conditions, the early legislatures of Washington territory parceled out the interior in county forms long before towns or even crossroad settlements had come into existence, A number of these counties never had other than mere legal or fictional being, and in that class for several years, belonged the first county of Spokane, that was attempted to be set up by the legislative session of 1857-8, when a bill was enacted January 29, "to create and organize Spokane county, as follows:" "Be it enacted, That all that portion of the county of Walla Walla embraced within the ...
Just because its a little cloudy doesnt mean you dont need sun block! Heres a link to some good information from the Washington State Department of Health.. Puget Sound, if it were a state by itself, would rank fourth in the nation for skin cancer rates. Thats because of a misconception that cloudy weather means people dont have to protect themselves from the sun.The state Department of Health advises that protecting you and your family from skin cancer is something that must be done all year, regardless of whether its sunny or cloudy. Ultra Violet (UV) light exposure, the most preventable cause of skin cancer, occurs even on cloudy days.Although children are rarely diagnosed with skin cancer, sunburns in childhood are associated with melanoma later in life. So, its important to protect children from UV light and establish healthy behaviors early. Reducing exposure to UV at early ages is among the reasons for a new law that went into effect this month banning kids under 18 from using ...
This list shows all peaks in Washington State that are high points of primary drainage basins with an area of over 200 square miles. A primary basin is that of a river that reaches the sea, so high points of basins of tributary rivers are excluded.. Over half of Washington is part of the vast Columbia River Basin, but the well-watered western part of the state has a healthy collection of smaller rivers that drain the Olympic Peninsula and the western slopes of the Cascades. Many of these high points are well-known peaks that many Washington climbers normally ascend in the course of their careers, so it is likely that many peakbaggers already have a head-start on this list even if they are seeing it for the first time.. ...

6.3.16. Chronic health advocates and patients scored a victory in Washington state this week, when a federal judge ordered the Washington Health Authority to cover hepatitis C prescription medications regardless of the severity of their liver damage.. The state Medicaid agency began limiting hepatitis C coverage in February 2015. Patients, along with Harvard Law School, filed a class action lawsuit challenging the policy, which bases whether patients were covered or denied on how damaged their liver is.. They argued that "waiting until that "waiting until a Medicaid enrollees liver is damaged before providing treatment is harmful to his/her health and significantly increases the risk of both morbidity and mortality," the Puget Sound Business Journal reported.. According to the article, "the judge agreed, ruling that the Washington State Health Care Authoritys violated the federal Medicaid Act, which allows for low-income patients on the program to have access to medically necessary ...
For over five years, activists in SW Washington have taken a stand against a proposal for the worlds largest fracked gas-to-methanol refinery. Proposed in Kalama, Washington, the refinery would use a staggering quantity of fracked gas. If built, it would quickly become one of Washingtons largest sources of climate-changing pollution. We wanted to acknowledge the tremendous effort that the Kalama team and allies from all over the region put forward in the past several weeks. Each Monday, on "No Methanol Mondays," a team from Kalama and other communities in SW Washington have traveled to Lacey, Washington, to encourage the Washington Department of Ecology (Ecology) to deny a key Shoreline Permit for the proposed refinery. Meanwhile, their friends and allies have submitted thousands of email comments and made hundreds of phone calls in opposition to the mega-refinery proposal. The commitment of these volunteer activists, who have spent hundreds of hours researching, writing, and taking creative ...
