Microbial communities of activated sludge (AS) play a key role in the performance of wastewater treatment processes. However, seasonal variability of microbial population in varying AS-based processes has been poorly correlated with operation of full-scale wastewater treatment systems (WWTSs). In this paper, significant seasonal variability of AS microbial communities in eight WWTSs located in the city of Guangzhou were revealed in terms of 16S rRNA-based Miseq sequencing. Furthermore, variation redundancy analysis (RDA) demonstrated that the microbial community compositions closely correlated with WWTS operation parameters such as temperature, BOD, NH4+-N and TN. Consequently, support vector regression models which reasonably predicted effluent BOD, SS and TN in WWTSs were established based on microbial community compositions. This work provided an alternative tool for rapid assessment on performance of full-scale wastewater treatment plants.

Climate change is affecting the world's natural ecosystems, according to the Fourth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. In Latin America, researchers have observed substantial changes in precipitation, temperature, climate variability, and the number and severity of extreme events. This project aims to assess population vulnerability and climate change impacts on waterborne and water-related diseases in Bolivia and Colombia. It will use a participatory, multistakeholder, and transdisciplinary research approach in two Andean Region watersheds, the Lauca River Basin in Bolivia and the Cauca River Basin in Colombia, to develop ecosystem and human health policy adaptation strategies. These river basins are home to indigenous communities and large urban centres, such as Cali. Although on different development paths, communities in both regions are dealing with changes in water availability and quality due to climate change. This affects commercial and subsistence ...
The lower critical solution temperature (LCST) or lower consolute temperature is the critical temperature below which the components of a mixture are miscible for all compositions. The word lower indicates that the LCST is a lower bound to a temperature interval of partial miscibility, or miscibility for certain compositions only. The phase behavior of polymer solutions is an important property involved in the development and design of most polymer-related processes. Partially miscible polymer solutions often exhibit two solubility boundaries, the upper critical solution temperature (UCST) and the lower critical solution temperature (LCST), which both depend on the molar mass and the pressure. At temperatures below LCST, the system is completely miscible in all proportions, whereas above LCST partial liquid miscibility occurs. In the phase diagram of the mixture components, the LCST is the shared minimum of the concave up spinodal and binodal (or coexistence) curves. It is in general pressure ...
The incubator's promotion of entrepreneurial development and the help of N.E. growth make its research have a strong practical significance. At the same time, concern for the sustainability of incubator development, the core of the problem lies in the ability to configure their incubator resources, that is, the level of incubating-efficiency. By DEA, HAC, In-depth interviews to discuss the situation in Zhejiang Province incubators, as well as influencing factors on incubating-efficiency and the improving path of the sample derived from the incubator in Zhejiang Province, which proposed a new hierarchical model and incubation Strategies for improving of incubating-efficiency.

There is a risk that increasing atmospheric greenhouse gas levels could trigger abrupt changes in the climate system - that is, changes so abrupt that they could seriously challenge the ability of humans, plants and animals to adapt. Ice core records can help us better understand this risk: they notably show that, during the last glacial period (around 100 000 to 20 000 years ago), temperature over the Greenland ice sheet could change by up to 16°C within a few decades.. With his INTERCLIMA (Inter-hemispheric Coupling of Abrupt Climate Change) project, Dr Joel Pedro of the University of Copenhagen has been trying to advance understanding of the governing mechanisms and inter-hemispheric coupling involved in abrupt climate change. By doing so, he hopes to help scientists trying to understand the extent and nature of the anthropogenic climate change we are witnessing to improve their climate predictions.. How can past climate change events inform us on future risks?. The Ice Age temperature ...
Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) and leptospirosis are seasonal rodent-borne infections in the Republic of Korea (Korea). The occurrences of HFRS and leptospirosis are influenced by climatic variability. However, few studies have examined the effects of local climatic variables on the development of these infections. The purpose of this study was to estimate the effect of climatic factors on the occurrence of HFRS and leptospirosis in Korea. Daily records on human cases of HFRS and leptospirosis between January 2001 to December 2009 were analyzed. The associations of climatic factors with these cases in high incidence provinces were estimated using the time-series method and multivariate generalized linear Poisson models with a maximal lag of 12 weeks. From 2001 to 2009, a total of 2912 HFRS and 889 leptospirosis cases were reported, with overall incidences of 0.67 and 0.21 cases per 100,000, respectively, in the study areas. The increase in minimum temperature (1 °C) at a lag of 11 weeks
The effect of growth temperature on the virulence of a strain of broth-grown serogroup 1 Legionella pneumophila (Wadsworth F889) was examined by growing the bacterium at different temperatures and then infecting guinea pigs (by intratracheal injection) and guinea pig alveolar macrophages. The 50% lethal dose for guinea pigs infected with 25 degrees C-grown F889 was log10 5.0 CFU and that for 41 degrees C-grown F889 was log10 5.7 CFU, or a fivefold difference. Guinea pig alveolar macrophages were infected in quadruplicate with log10 3.8 CFU of F889 cells grown at either 25 or 41 degrees C. Counts of F889 in the alveolar macrophages infected with 25 degrees C-grown bacteria were 40% greater after 1 day of incubation (P = 2 X 10(-4)) than were counts in the alveolar macrophage suspensions inoculated with 41 degrees C-grown bacteria. However, the counts were not significantly different after 3 days of incubation. Examination of cover slip cultures of guinea pig alveolar macrophages infected with 25 ...

Written by, Jesica Tairoski. On Saturday, February 1st the Markham Community Wellness Group held their first seminar at the Markham Village Library. The seminar was regarding Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and how it affects us Canadians during the wintertime. January and February are the prime months where Seasonal Affective Disorder affects many Canadians. During these months, we typically experience extremely cold weather and an abundance of snow, which can affect our daily schedules and ultimately affect our mood. In this article I will be going over the signs, symptoms and treatment of Seasonal Affective Disorder. Disclaimer: I am not a medical professional. All information is sourced from a web article that is referenced at the end. Seasonal affective disorder is a type of depression that is related to changes in seasons - SAD begins and ends at about the same times every year. Generally, seasonal affective disorder starts in fall or winter and ends in spring or early summer. Causes ...
The Greenland ice sheet has been one of the largest contributors to global sea-level rise over the past 20 years, accounting for 0.5 mm yr−1 of a total of 3.2 mm yr−1. A significant portion of this contribution is associated with the speed-up of an increased number of glaciers in southeast and northwest Greenland. Here, we show that the northeast Greenland ice stream, which extends more than 600 km into the interior of the ice sheet, is now undergoing sustained dynamic thinning, linked to regional warming, after more than a quarter of a century of stability. This sector of the Greenland ice sheet is of particular interest, because the drainage basin area covers 16% of the ice sheet (twice that of Jakobshavn Isbræ) and numerical model predictions suggest no significant mass loss for this sector, leading to an under-estimation of future global sea-level rise. The geometry of the bedrock and monotonic trend in glacier speed-up and mass loss suggests that dynamic drawdown of ice in this region ...
US and Swiss researchers have, for the first time, modelled a climate system with extremely high carbon emissions in an attempt to test the boundaries of the current computer simulation programs that inform us.. Published today, Tuesday 5 July, in IOP Publishing's journal Environmental Research Letters, the study has revealed the potentially devastating effects that high carbon emissions could have on our climate.. Little attention has previously been paid to the upper bound range of future emissions which, as the researchers state, is imperative when testing the outcomes of climate change simulations.. The A1FI scenario, considered in the most recent report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), represents the upper bound of predicted carbon emissions.. The researchers, from the National Centre for Atmospheric Research, Colorado, and the Institute for Atmospheric and Climate Science, Zurich, created two hypothetical high carbon emission scenarios and compared their effects ...
Routine influenza vaccination of health-care personnel (HCP) every influenza season can reduce influenza-related illness and its potentially serious consequences among HCP and their patients (1-5). To protect HCP and their patients, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommends that all HCP be vaccinated against influenza during each influenza season (5). To estimate influenza vaccination coverage among HCP during the 2012-13 season, CDC conducted an opt-in Internet panel survey of 1,944 self-selected HCP during April 1-16, 2013. This report summarizes the results of that survey, which found that, overall, 72.0% of HCP reported having had an influenza vaccination for the 2012-13 season, an increase from 66.9% vaccination coverage during the 2011-12 season (6). By occupation type, coverage was 92.3% among physicians, 89.1% among pharmacists, 88.5% among nurse practitioners/physician assistants, and 84.8% among nurses. By occupational setting, vaccination coverage was highest ...

Abstract Studies were conducted to determine the effect of environmental temperature on the susceptibility of Aedes taeniorhynchus mosquitoes for Venezuelan equine encephalitis (VEE) and Rift Valley fever (RVF) viruses. Mosquitoes reared at low temperature (19°C) were significantly more susceptible to infection with RVF virus (infection rate = 70%, 158 of 226) than were those mosquitoes reared at 26°C (infection rate = 48%, 135 of 280), regardless of the temperature at which mosquitoes were held after exposure to virus (19 or 26°C). Likewise, for Ae. taeniorhynchus exposed to VEE virus, the infection rate in mosquitoes reared at low temperature (97%, 236 of 243) was significantly greater than was that for mosquitoes reared at 26°C (78%, 217 of 280), regardless of the temperature at which mosquitoes were held after exposure to virus (19 or 26°C). Conversely, in mosquitoes infected with either RVF or VEE virus, virus disseminated from the midgut to the hemocoel more rapidly in mosquitoes held at 26
Core and skin temperature were measured by radiotelemetry in starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) during 30 min flights in a wind tunnel. Core temperature was independent of ambient temperature from 0 to 28 degrees C. The temporal mean of the monitored core temperature during flight was 42-7 degrees C in one bird and 44-0 degrees C in another. These temperatures are 2-4 degrees C higher than the resting temperature in starlings, and are among the highest steady-state temperatures observed in any animal. Skin temperature on the breast was within a few degrees of core temperature. In some locations skin temperature was higher at low ambient temperatures than at intermediate ambient temperatures. An analysis of the data shows that a high core temperature does not function as an aid to head dissipation. On the contrary, insulation is adjusted to maintain a high temperature, presumably because it is necessary for flight. The increase in skin temperature at low ambient temperatures is believed to be a result ...
White trillium, Trillium grandiflorum , blooms snowy white, but the flowers turn pink as they fade with age. (NPS Photo) Great Smoky Mountains National Park is a world-renowned preserve of wildflower diversity-some 1,500 kinds of flowering plants are found in the park, more than in any other North American national park. In fact, the park is sometimes referred to as the 'Wildflower National Park.' From the earliest hepaticas and spring-beauties in the late winter to the last asters in the late fall, blooming flowers can be found year-round in the park. A group of flowers known as spring ephemerals begins the yearly show. Ephemerals are so named because they appear above ground only in late winter and early spring, then flower, fruit, and die back within a short two month period. They emerge from February through April, and are gone (dormant) by May or June. This remarkable group of plants is adapted to the rhythm of the overstory trees. Ephemerals appear before deciduous trees leaf out, when ...

During the 2009--10 influenza season, the second wave of influenza activity from 2009 pandemic influenza A (H1N1) occurred in the United States; few seasonal influenza viruses were detected. Influenza activity* peaked in late-October and was associated with higher pediatric mortality and higher rates of hospitalizations in children and young adults than in previous seasons. The proportion of visits to health-care providers for influenza-like illness (ILI), as reported in the U.S. Outpatient Influenza-like Illness Surveillance Network (ILINet), was among the highest since ILI surveillance began in 1997 in its current form. This report summarizes influenza activity in the United States during the 2009--10 influenza season (August 30, 2009--June 12, 2010).. U.S. Viral Surveillance. Since April 2009, the beginning of the 2009 H1N1 pandemic, through June 12, 2010, approximately 740,000 influenza specimens were tested for influenza, and the number of laboratory-confirmed positives was approximately ...
Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua L.), acclimated to 5 °C, were equipped with ultrasonic transmitters which allowed the continuous monitoring of their vertical movements and heart rate. Fish were then placed in a 125 m3 tower tank in which the various thermal conditions they encounter in their natural environment were reproduced. Physiological and behavioural responses of cod were followed in parallel to the induced environmental changes. The experimental conditions studied in the tower tank were also reproduced in a swimming respirometer, where oxygen consumption and heart rate could be monitored within the activity range of a free-swimming animal. In a homogeneous water column, a rise in temperature induced marked increases in fish swimming activity, heart rate and heart beat-to-beat variability. In a thermally stratified environment, voluntary activity also increased when the thermal structure of the water column was altered, though no temperature-dependent changes in heart rate were observed. ...
Abstract Background: Globally, indoor air pollution from various forms of pollutants is an increasing problem. The most common form of indoor air pollution is that caused by inefficient burning of solid and fossil fuels like wood, charcoal and kerosene in indoor environments. Indoor air pollution is therefore a significant problem particularly in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) including Uganda where use of such solid fuels is most common. There is however little attention drawn to understanding the problem specifically in Uganda to come up with tailor-made solutions. Objectives: To assess risk factors for indoor air pollution exposure in households in Bulamu ward, Kasangati town council, Wakiso district so as to provide information that could be used to make proper decisions and design measures to reduce indoor air pollution. Methodology: A cross sectional study was carried out among 96 households in Bulamu ward, Kasangati town council, Wakiso district. From the 5 villages within the ward, 1 was ...
Seasonal influenza vaccination is the most important way of preventing seasonal influenza virus infections and potentially severe complications, including death. Seasonal influenza vaccination reduces the likelihood of becoming ill with influenza or transmitting influenza to others.•Seasonal influenza vaccines do not contain the 2009 H1N1 strain and are not expected to provide significant cross-protection against pandemic (H1N1) 2009 influenza.² Influenza A (H1N1) 2009 monovalent vaccines to prevent the 2009 H1N1 virus have been licensed; initial doses of licensed vaccine are expected to be available by mid-October 2009.•Two types of seasonal influenza vaccine are licensed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in the United States: trivalent influenza vaccine (TIV) and live, attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV).•TIV is injected into the muscle of the upper arm or thigh. It can be used for people 6 months of age or older, including those with chronic medical conditions, pregnant ...
By Nic Maclellan. "Marshall Islands was always a climate leader. The responsibility to raise awareness about the impact of climate change on our islands and our livelihoods is a responsibility we own. We have to be part of the solution and show other countries that if we can do it, so can they.". That's Hilda C. Heine, the former President of the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI).. In recent years, warming climate and increased fire activity have raised concern about post-fire recovery of western U.S. forests. We assessed relationships between climate variability and tree establishment after fire in dry ponderosa pine forests of the Colorado Front Range. We harvested and aged over 400 post-fire juvenile ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) and Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) trees using an improved tree-ring based approach that yielded annually-resolved dates and then assessed relationships between climate variability and pulses of tree establishment. We found that tree establishment was largely concentrated in years of above-average moisture availability in the growing season, including higher amounts of precipitation and more positive values of the Palmer Drought Severity Index. Under continued climate change, drier conditions associated with warming temperatures may limit forest recovery after fire, which could result in lower stand densities or shifts to non-forested

Dmrt1 has been implicated as an important factor in sex determination in all classes of vertebrates, including reptiles with temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD). Specifically, early embryonic expression of Dmrt1 appears to be an integral part of normal testicular development in vertebrates. Recently, a number of TSD studies have placed Dmrt1 expression at the top of a short list of putative temperature-sensitive events for TSD. Dmrt1 expression has been shown to be up-regulated at male-producing temperatures during the thermosensitive period (TSP) of several TSD reptile species. An interesting finding in Dmrt1 studies of fish and amphibians has been that in species where exogenous steroids can stimulate sex reversal, Dmrt1 expression can also be manipulated by these steroid treatments. In the current study, we examine the effects of exogenous 17β-estradiol treatment on Dmrt1 expression at male-producing temperature (26°C) in a reptile with TSD, the red-eared slider turtle,Trachemys ...

Politico reports that more than 40 progressive activist organizations sent a letter to the president and lawmakers on Wednesday "urging them to prioritize cooperation with China on climate change and curb its confrontational approach over issues like Beijing's crackdown on Hong Kong and forced detention of Uyghur Muslims.". The letter, which was written by groups including the Sunrise Movement, which devised the environmental action program known as the Green New Deal, is calling on the Biden administration and members of Congress to "eschew the dominant antagonistic approach to U.S.-China relations and instead prioritize multilateralism, diplomacy, and cooperation with China to address the existential threat that is the climate crisis.". As previously reported by Rebel News, China is accused of human rights violations against minority ...

The logarithmic mean temperature difference (also known as log mean temperature difference or simply by its initialism LMTD) is used to determine the temperature driving force for heat transfer in flow systems, most notably in heat exchangers. The LMTD is a logarithmic average of the temperature difference between the hot and cold feeds at each end of the double pipe exchanger. The larger the LMTD, the more heat is transferred. The use of the LMTD arises straightforwardly from the analysis of a heat exchanger with constant flow rate and fluid thermalhot We assume that a generic heat exchanger has two ends (which we call "A" and "B") at which the hot and cold streams enter or exit on either side; then, the LMTD is defined by the logarithmic mean as follows: L M T D = Δ T A − Δ T B ln ⁡ ( Δ T A Δ T B ) = Δ T A − Δ T B ln ⁡ Δ T A − ln ⁡ Δ T B {\displaystyle LMTD={\frac {\Delta T_{A}-\Delta T_{B}}{\ln \left({\frac {\Delta T_{A}}{\Delta T_{B}}}\right)}}={\frac {\Delta T_{A}-\Delta ...

The major environmental issues in Kyrgyzstan are summarized in the 2007 Concept of Ecological Security of Kyrgyz Republic and discussed in other environmental and environmental policy documents such as National Environmental Action Plan (1995), Country Development Strategy for 2009-2011, Strategy on Biological Diversity (2002), 2nd Environmental Performance Review of Kyrgyzstan (2008), etc. The Concept of Ecological Security considers environmental issues in Kyrgyzstan within the global, regional and national spheres of influence. Global climate change, ozone layer depletion, desertification, and biodiversity loss are among global environmental issues presently on the agenda in Kyrgyzstan. Global Climate Change. Kyrgyzstan acknowledged the problem of global climate change and in 2003 ratified the Kyoto Protocol to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. It is estimated that the energy sector of the country is responsible for emissions of approximately two third of total carbon ...
TY - JOUR. T1 - Nasal AMP and histamine challenge within and outside the pollen season in patients with seasonal allergic rhinitis. AU - Vaidyanathan,Sriram. AU - Williamson,Peter. AU - Clearie,Karine. AU - Morrison,Ashley. AU - Lipworth,Brian. PY - 2011/1. Y1 - 2011/1. N2 - Background: Nasal hyperreactivity is a prominent feature of allergic rhinitis. Variation in nasal hyperreactivity with different challenge agents in and out of the pollen season has not been examined. Objective: We sought to compare nasal hyperreactivity with different challenge agents before, during, and after the pollen season. Methods: Grass pollen-monosensitized patients performed cumulative-dose challenges with nasal AMP (25-800 mg . mL(-1)) and histamine (0.25-8 mg . mL(-1)) before, during, and after the grass pollen season. Outcomes included the provocative concentration of agent causing a 30% decrease in the peak nasal inspiratory flow (PNIF) (PC30), recovery profile, and diary cards. Results: Nineteen participants ...
As rising temperatures threaten to reduce the area in the tropics suitable for growing coffee, scientists work to engineer more resilient coffee plants.
A kitchen air conditioning system, comprising an air conditioning assembly (1) and an oil smoke sucking assembly (2), wherein the air conditioning assembly (1) comprises a compressor (11), a first heat exchanger (12), and a second heat exchanger (13); a third heat exchanger (3) is mounted on the oil smoke sucking assembly (2); the third heat exchanger (3) is in communication with the second heat exchanger (13) by means of a refrigeration channel (4); the air conditioning assembly (1) has a fresh air inlet (16) and a fresh air outlet (17), and fresh air entering from the fresh air inlet (16) is divided into two paths. According to the kitchen air conditioning system, fresh air entering the first heat exchanger (12) is supplemented to inside of a kitchen by means of the fresh air outlet (17); fresh air entering an air inlet area (21) is discharged to outdoors by means of an oil smoke sucking fan after cooling the third heat exchanger (3); and the cooling of the third heat exchanger (3) facilitates
Shortly after President Obama was first elected, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for his "extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between people." He would find himself in good company, since over 70 Nobel laureates endorsed him for the presidency the year before. However, one of those Nobel Prize winners is now standing against Obama, and it's not the first time.. Nobel winner Dr. Ivar Giaever was one of over a hundred co-signers of a message given to the president in 2009, that criticized his stance on climate change. Now he's returned to reiterate his position on Obama's environmental policies. At a recent Nobel laureate meeting, he claimed that Obama's latest statements on the matter were "ridiculous" and that he's receiving "bad advice" on global warming. "I say this to Obama: Excuse me, Mr. President, but you're wrong. Dead wrong."He further added that "Global warming really has become a new religion. Because you cannot discuss it. It's not proper. It is ...
