Like sea lions, walruses can turn their hind flippers forward for walking on land; their foreflippers are weaker than those of sea lions and they are not as strong swimmers. They live in shallow water and spend much of the time on ice floes and beaches, where they congregate in herds of about 100 animals of both sexes. They can dive to a depth of 240 ft (70 m) to find food, relying primarily on touch; their diet consists chiefly of shellfish, especially mollusks. The cheek teeth are rounded and are used for crushing shells. Walruses use their tusks for prying shellfish from the ocean floor, as well as for pulling themselves up onto ice floes. The herds tend to follow the ice line, moving south in winter and north in summer. Walruses mate in the water and give birth on land or ice floes. Male walruses compete for territory, often fighting each other; the winners in these fights breed with large numbers of females. Older male walruses frequently bear large scars from these bloody but rarely fatal ...

Atlantic walruses (Odobenus rosmarus rosmarus). Two female walruses on an ice floe. This large, gregarious relative of the seal has tusks that can reach a metre in length. Both the male (bulls) and female (cows) have tusks; the bulls use them in displays and fights when competing for dominance and access to cows. Both males and females use tusks to haul themselves onto ice or to create breathing holes. The walrus has inflatable pockets on either side of its oesophagus which it can fill with up to 50 litres of air for buoyancy. It dives to the ocean floor to feed on mussels, crabs, snails and starfish. The Atlantic walrus is found in two separate areas to the east and west of Greenland. Photographed on Baffin Island, Canada. - Stock Image Z936/0302
Laboratory of Mammals, Zoological Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences, Saint Petersburg, Russia. The walrus (Odobenus rosmarus) is in some current systematic schemes divided into three subspecies: O. r. rosmarus in the North Atlantic, O. r. divergens in the North Pacific, and O. r. laptevi in the Laptev Sea. These three subspecies have been described as differing in body size, but the taxonomic status of O. r. laptevi is disputed because only few specimens were used for its description and no proper comparative assessment of its phenotypic variation has been conducted. In this study we apply molecular and morphometric methods to assess the taxonomic status of O. r. laptevi and to analyze the systematic and phylogeographic relationships between the purported three walrus subspecies.. Mitochondrial sequence data support the recognition of only two walrus subspecies O. r. rosmarus and O. r. divergens, the latter including individuals from the Laptev Sea. Accordingly, we suggest the subspecies ...

Update 1 July: The Obama administration has ruled wildlife protections for walruses and polar bears bar Shell from drilling two wells simultaneously in the Chukchi Sea this summer. The firm will be able to move its two contracted rigs to the waters off the Alaskan coast, but only bore wells with one at any given time. This is because the wells are only 9 miles apart, not the 15 miles required.. A little known, but important, permitting rule, designed to protect walruses and other marine mammals from disturbance, may be the spanner in the works for oil giant Shell as they await approval for the final few permits needed to drill in the Arctics Chukchi Sea this summer.. The restrictions could see Shell barred from operating both of its Arctic drill rigs at the same time this summer, which environmental groups say will be situated too close together. This might cause delays as the issue is sorted out.. Shells fleet is already heading north to Alaska, even though the firm still needs to obtain two ...

Statistics applies to everything. Today I was looking up examples of the Satterthwaite alternative to the pooled variance t-test.. In short, a t-test is used when one wants to answer the question, "Is the difference between these two groups greater than one would expect to find by chance?". Any time you measure two groups, whether it is the number of walruses on two beaches or the number of live births in a sample of 400 women, you are not going to get the exact same number twice. Just by chance, one of the walruses could have swam out to sea, or one of the women could have given birth to triplets. Random events happen. A t-test compares the difference between two groups to the differences that could be attributable just random events.. The denominator used to calculate the t-test is based on the variance. If the population differs a lot, you wouldnt be surprised to find a fair amount of difference between two groups. For example, lets say you take two groups of 100 people each. You measure ...

I argue that Marvel became more style than substance abuse… excuse me, substance, and thus we have the one millimeter close to copyright infringement, The Walrus.. But, who cares? It puts the comic in "comic book", right? And also, with hellacious deadlines, even I would come up with asinine things like that. For example: I bought a Wolverine issue from the 90s only because someone at Marvel thought he could be sneaky and have Logan fight the bad guys from the (anime/manga and two american version movies) series "Guyver". Lack of imagination and storytelling ability? True. Did it look cool enough for a sale? Absolutely.. Tusk em hard, Walrus. Woo - Woo.. ...

An in person meeting of WALRUS happened on 14 July 2012 at an Italian restaurant in Dupont Circle area of Washington DC. About 30 people attended from the two chapters in the United States (WM-NYC & WM-DC), the proposed New England Chapter and other groupings of Wikimedians around the country (Pittsburgh, California, the Midwest, the South East, and Cascadia). Outside of introductions, all discussion was informal and did not follow a set outline. People wondered how to break up the US into "areas," "regions," or "metro areas." It was suggested to follow the census areas or the areas that the regional ambassadors are tied to. There was discussion of why a Federation of United States Chapters may be needed to clear up voting power at ChapterCom. Some were less than pleased with the idea of a national and regional system with a power structure. They would rather go with a grassroots effort. All agreed that some sort of support system needs to be in place to support educational and GLAM activities. ...

By training the animals to vocalize on cue, the trainers can demonstrate these sounds to guests and other people who may otherwise never hear such sounds. In addition, scientists can reliably record and analyze the different vocal patterns. Vocalizations from this group of walruses were recorded and used for some of the dinosaur sounds in the Jurassic Park movies. This young male walrus starred as Jocko in the movie 50 First Dates. At home, Townsends meltdowns were becoming more violent. Hed spend hours on online forums dedicated to anime. He hated being disagreed with, online or off. When it happened, hed smash something. His laptop was often the first victim. Other times, hed throw things at his sisters and at his mother. She was working at Sears while trying to go to various meetings with Community Living Algoma (CLA), an -organization designed to help guide autistic youth through the school system, and -Algoma Family Services (AFS), which offered specialized programs dealing with mental health. Neither agency, Upper claims, had much experience with Aspergers. (Both agencies declined to comment.) One CLA case worker told her that she was learning about the disorder by watching The Big Bang Theory, a sitcom about a group of nerdy oddballs living in Pasadena, California. (This also happened to be Townsends favourite show.). As Townsends behaviour got worse, his mother was forced into retreat. At one point, he set ...

Il testo infatti, una tipica burla alla John Lennon, è frutto della sua tendenza a costellare le proprie canzoni di falsi riferimenti per prendersi gioco dei fan più inclini a cercare significati nascosti nelle parole dei brani rock in voga in quel periodo[1], fa ampio riferimento diretto ad altri lavori dei Beatles: Strawberry Fields Forever («I told you about strawberry fields»), The Fool on the Hill («I told you about the fool on the hill»), Lady Madonna («Lady Madonna trying to make ends meet»), I Am the Walrus («The walrus was Paul») e Fixing a Hole («Fixing a hole in the ocean»), e altri, più criptici, ad altri brani, come Theres a Place, Im ...

So it goes without saying that life is a shit-ton better when Im not dying of some flesh-eating virus cousin or whatever. The Cat & Co. visit over Memorial Day was a great time-spent a lot of time in the city learning ... stuff, like at the Field Museum, for instance: We were walking through the Animals of Africa and Antarctica and whatever when we came upon a walrus skeleton. I dont know if yall have ever SEEN a walrus skeleton, but as I was looking at it I notice theres a rather large bone situated between its legs, and not like a tail. I pondered this for a moment before I whispered to Cat "Cat, are you seeing what Im seeing here?" to which she was all, "Yeeeeeah, I see it." So we pondered it a bit longer before sharing our findings with Mr. Rags (her ex-husband with whom shes reconciled, huzzah!) out of earshot of T-man, whos at that age where anything scat-related is the greatest thing ever. Well, later at dinner (and I gotta interject here for a moment that for those of you who ...

Well, thats a sure fire way to set oneself up for disappointment. As a retreat leader, I used to ask that question to help determine which kids were really ready for the retreat experience. Nine times out of ten, the ones who said they were looking forward to "the crying part" or were expecting a profound spriritual experience were the ones who left slightly to strongly disappointed at the end. I remember one such student angrily berating me and the entire retreat staff at the end because she didnt think she or her classmates cried enough or that the experience went deep enough. The ones who answered by saying they honestly didnt know what to expect were the ones who were most likely to have a genuinely moving experience. The same goes for pretty much every adventure we go into. When we enter with specific expectations rather than general hopes, we are setting ourselves up to be let down, putting unrealistic responsibilities on all the people we interact with - whether or not they are aware ...
My younger daughter is all about outer space. She loves everything about it - both the NASA and the sci-fi. Her absolute favorite sci-fi show is hands down "Star Trek". She is totally obsessed! Her every day hat is a knit beanie with Spock ears. She regularly wears her Spock uniform as clothes. She sleeps with her stuffed Spock and Kirk dolls every night. She has the opening memorized and giggles every time I put an episode on for her (she even knows the names of her favorite episodes and asks for them specifically). She was a Tribble for Halloween. So it was only logical that she should have a shuttlecraft for a bed. Now, to buy one would cost money - lots of money. We dont have lots of money. The solution: make one! She and her sister were already sharing an inexpensive bunk bed we picked up at Ikea. To turn it into a shuttlecraft, my husband and I simply painted the bed with leftover gray paint from another project, and added sheets with logos (photo transfer paper run through a regular ...

Walt Disney tortured his animators to the point where they didnt even realize that their jobs could be fun. So, since they hated their lives and jobs so much, they realized it wouldnt even be worth the effort to draw full, well-thought out animation if it was going to turn out as boring as Disney wanted it. And UPA was born. The animators thought it was a big "fuck you" to Walt, but really it was just a big "fuck you" to the audience. They thought it was more "experimental" and "creative," but without basic construction neither terms can even apply. It was just an exercise in stupidity. Now some people go around calling it "real art" as though everything that was done before it was just some kind of money making perversion for children ...
