The size and national reach of the MINAP registry underpin its value as an audit and research tool. The representativeness to the whole of England and Wales is a key strength owing to the willing collaboration of cardiac units across England and Wales in submitting their data, but this is also MINAPs greatest challenge (see below). In auditing hospital performance against national guidelines, MINAP has been the driver for substantial improvements in ACS care and outcomes, longitudinal analyses after its inception demonstrating year by year increases in use of evidence-based treatments and decreasing 30-day mortality rates.16 With over 735 000 ACS admissions recorded, and with every acute hospital in England and Wales submitting data, MINAP has the power to answer research questions relevant to small subsets and to provide comparative analyses at hospital, regional and international levels. However, MINAP shares the weaknesses of most other large data collections, particularly in the compromise ...

BACKGROUND: Vascular disease is associated with increased risk of dementia. Vascular health worsens with age. We investigated the relationship between self-reported vascular disease and brain pathology. METHODS: Brain donations to the population-based MRC Cognitive Function and Ageing Study (n=456, age range 66-103 years) were assessed using a standard protocol for Alzheimers disease (AD) and cerebrovascular pathology. History of stroke, angina, diabetes, medicated hypertension and heart attack were identified from self- and proxy-report interviews, retrospective informant interviews and death certificates. Logistic regression was used to estimate associations between each health condition and dichotomised neuropathological variables adjusted for age and sex. RESULTS: Stroke (36%), angina (23%), diabetes (12%), medicated hypertension (35%) and heart attack (22%) were frequently reported. Self-reported stroke was strongly associated with vascular, but not AD pathology. Medicated hypertension was

Published: 28 Feb 2012. St Georges Hospital, Tooting, has the best response rate for treating heart attack patients in London, according to the latest Myocardial Ischaemia National Audit Project (MINAP) which was discussed at the MINAP London Roadshow in November 2011.. The annual study looked at data from April 2010 - March 2011 and found that St Georges had the best call to balloon rate; treating 90% of patients in under 150 minutes.. The call-to-balloon time is from when the patient makes the emergency call, to the time that their emergency surgery is completed in hospital. The current standard for this is 150 minutes.. St Georges is one of the biggest and busiest of the eight specialist heart attack centres in the Capital, serving the southwest London population and, since March 2011, patients from across east Surrey.. Dr Pitt Lim, consultant cardiologist and clinical lead for cardiac intervention, said: "A heart attack occurs when a coronary artery is blocked by clots. Time to ...
The linkage of Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD) to the national registry of acute coronary syndromes (the Myocardial Ischaemia National Audit Project, MINAP), Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) and Office for National Statistics (ONS) available through CALIBER (Cardiovascular disease research using linked bespoke studies and electronic records), offers an opportunity to investigate the association between autoimmune disorders and the initial presentation of non-fatal and fatal specific cardiovascular phenotypes. The use of a systematic approach to investigate whether a range of commonly diagnosed autoimmune disorders are independent risk factors for several specific and well defined arterial and venous diseases will help to improve the investigators understanding of the role of autoimmune disorders in development of specific types of CVD in both men and women and in different age groups. It will also provide useful information to improve existing cardiovascular risk prediction methods ...

This national observational study included 693,388 patients (median age 70.7 years, 452,896 [65.5%] male) from the Myocardial Ischaemia National Audit Project (England and Wales) who were admitted with AMI between 1 January 2003 and 30 June 2013. There were 412,809 (59.5%) patients with multimorbidity at the time of admission with AMI, i.e., having at least 1 of the following long-term health conditions: diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or asthma, heart failure, renal failure, cerebrovascular disease, peripheral vascular disease, or hypertension. Those with heart failure, renal failure, or cerebrovascular disease had the worst outcomes (39.5 [95% CI 39.0-40.0], 38.2 [27.7-26.8], and 26.6 [25.2-26.4] deaths per 100 person-years, respectively). Latent class analysis revealed 3 multimorbidity phenotype clusters: (1) a high multimorbidity class, with concomitant heart failure, peripheral vascular disease, and hypertension, (2) a medium multimorbidity class, with peripheral vascular ...

BACKGROUND A national survey of tuberculosis was conducted in England and Wales in 1998 to obtain detailed information on the occurrence of the disease and recent trends. This survey also piloted the methodology for enhanced tuberculosis surveillance in England and Wales and investigated the prevalence of HIV infection in adults with tuberculosis.. METHODS Clinical and demographic data for all cases diagnosed during 1998 were obtained, together with microbiological data where available. Annual incidence rates in the population were estimated by age, sex, ethnic group, and geographical region using denominators from the 1998 Labour Force Survey. Incidence rates in different subgroups of the population were compared with the rates observed in previous surveys. The tuberculosis survey database for 1998 was matched against the Communicable Disease Surveillance Centre HIV/AIDS database to estimate the prevalence of HIV co-infection in adult patients with tuberculosis.. RESULTS A total of 5658 ...

It had rained all the previous night, which had probably enhanced the colour of the plant and it might have been more difficult to spot in dry conditions. Much of the crag is mildly calcareous, with Neckera crispa growing on the most calcareous parts. In his Flora, Ray mentions that there were two patches, so if it is the same face, then possibly it has spread slightly, or the original patches have fragmented resulting in several smaller patches. The face is well out of reach of sheep and it is not a place someone is likely to climb, so the population will hopefully continue to thrive. This is the only known south Wales population - the RDB indicates 8 extant (post 1970) sites in Wales, but it looks like only three or four of the north Wales records are post 2000 ...
John Henry Patrick Pat Brain (17 March 1896 - 11 December 1945) was a Welsh cricketer. Brain was a right-handed batsman who played primarily as a wicketkeeper. He was born at Caerau, Glamorgan. Brain made his debut for Glamorgan in the 1920 Minor Counties Championship against Devon. He represented the county in 3 further Minor Counties fixtures in 1920. Following Glamorgans elevation to first-class status, he represented the club in 6 matches between 1921 and 1928, making his debut against Derbyshire and playing his final first-class match for the county in 1928 against Oxford University. In his 7 first-class matches he scored 86 runs at a batting average of 8.60 and a high score of 19*. Behind the stumps he took 3 catches and made 2 stumpings. Brain also made a single first-class appearance for a combined Oxford and Cambridge Universities team against Glamorgan in 1922 at Cardiff Arms Park. Outside of playing cricket, Pat Brain worked for the family brewery, Brains Brewery. In the 1920s he ...

The low number of training courses delivered through the language to Welsh Government staff are revealing in a number of ways. First, it suggests there is a need for new legal standards for the use of Welsh by public and some private bodies if the government does not look at its own practices. The proposed standards are meant to promote the Welsh language. However, in practice it turns out that the Welsh Government itself is unable to train sufficient numbers of its own staff to speak Welsh.. Can we blame NHS Direct Wales for having a substandard Welsh language option in which call handlers cannot speak Welsh or are not confident in answering queries when Carwyn Joness government does not provide sufficient opportunities for its staff to practice their Welsh speaking skills? If less than 27 members of staff out of 5,000 attend training courses in the Welsh language in two years, can we expect them to answer calls from members of the public/ converse confidently in the language?. Second, efforts ...

Functional disability, the loss of ability to carry out daily tasks unaided, is a major adverse outcome more common with increasing age. The potential contribution of neuropathological changes in subcortical areas of the brain associated with normal ageing may be a contributing factor to this loss of function. This study investigates the clinicopathological relationship between functional ability during life and pathological correlates identified at post mortem in an UK population of older people (66-102 years). The aim is to examine the clinicopathological correlates of functional disability in subcortical neuronal populations of non-demented elderly individuals. 156 non-demented participants in the brain donation programme of the Medical Research Council Cognitive Function and Ageing Study (MRC-CFAS) were included in this study. Neuropathological examination was based on the CERAD protocol; pathologies of interest were amyloid plaques, neurofibrillary tangles, Lewy bodies, vascular disease and
Mutation in the triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells (TREM) 2 gene has been identified as a risk factor for several neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimers disease (AD). Experimental studies using animal models of AD have highlighted a number of functions associated with TREM2 and its expression by microglial cells. It has therefore been assumed that this is also the case in humans. However, there is very limited information concerning the cellular expression of TREM2 in the human brain. As part of investigations of microglia using post-mortem resources provided by the Medical Research Council Cognitive Function and Ageing Studies (MRC-CFAS), we immunostained the cerebral cortex of 299 participants for TREM2 using the Sigma antibody HPA010917 and compared with the macrophage/microglial markers Iba1 and CD68 ...
We ask the National Assembly for Wales to ensure that schools are free to exercise their statutory powers under regulation 7 of The Education (Pupil Registration) (Wales) Regulations 2010 without interference from bodies such as regional educational consortia and local authorities and without threat of penalisation through school inspection, performance judgement and banding processes.. Local authorities in Wales and their consortia are recommending that schools do not exercise their statutory powers under the above legislation leaving more families exposed to the threat of penalty notices under the Education (Penalty Notices) (Wales) Regulations 2013 than would have been otherwise. These recommendations are made on the basis that they can improve attainment despite the lack of evidence that absence of the type allowed under regulation 7 of The Education (Pupil Registration) (Wales) Regulations 2010 results in poorer attainment.. Currently schools in Wales can be penalised through inspection, ...

Cardiff Today. Cardiff is a green city. It is well served by green and blue spaces, with areas such as Bute Park in the heart of Cardiff recognised for their outstanding beauty. Residents also have easy access to the Brecon Beacons national park and coastlines in the wider city-region.. Cardiffs recycling rates perform strongly compared to other Core Cities. The household waste recycling rate has risen from 4% to 58% since the recycling and composting targets were put in place. However, street cleanliness is consistently seen as a priority for residents.. Levels of car use are amongst the highest of the Core Cities and use of public transport in the city is comparatively low, although levels of walking and cycling compare well and are growing. Over 60% of residents now think that transport in the city is a serious or very serious problem. The citys reliance on cars also contributes to Cardiffs carbon emissions being high compared to many other British cities, with some city centre wards ...

In view of the recent intense media attention given to necrotising fasciitis it may be opportune to examine the facts. Perhaps the most important, given the current hysteria, is that the number of laboratory reports of systemic infection with group A streptococci in England and Wales made to the Communicable Disease Surveillance Centre has not changed over the past three years. In the first 16 weeks of this year 200 blood isolates were reported, compared with 212 and 200 in the first 16 weeks of 1993 and 1992, respectively.1. The condition was first described … ...

The germ of ISORA started after the war when Irish Sea racing was at an extremely low ebb, although there was a tradition of such races such as the Tranmere Sailing Clubs Midnight Race, run since 1907, and the Llandudno Race run by the Royal Mersey Yacht Club as a feeder race for the Menai Straits Regatta. In order to revive interest in offshore racing, Peter Brett and Mostyn Vicars formed the Merseyside and North Wales Joint Offshore Co-ordinating Committee which laid the foundations of our present organisation. The following extract from the minutes defines its activities and make-up:- The purpose of the committee is to assist and encourage clubs in the Merseyside and North Wales area in the sponsoring of offshore races in the Irish Sea under the RORC rating and time scale. The Committee, which is composed of representatives of the RORC and certain local clubs, does not sponsor races itself. On the 27th May 2015 the Shared Regulatory Services Communicable Disease Team (Cardiff) identified two cases of Campylobacter (one in Cardiff and the other in the Vale of Glamorgan) that were linked to the same premises (Premises A) in Cardiff.. This triggered an immediate investigation and an Outbreak Control Team was subsequently convened, declaring a formal outbreak on 4th June 2015.. In total there were 33 cases meeting the case definition of which 11 were microbiologically confirmed as Campylobacter jejuni. No cases were hospitalised. 24 cases ate at Premises A on 17th May. The investigation of these outbreaks of syphilis highlighted a number of methods of identification, investigation, and control specific to an outbreak of sexually transmitted infection. These have informed the development by the Communicable Disease Surveillance Centre of an outline plan for outbreaks of sexually transmitted infections; this has been consulted upon and is currently being updated.23. Outbreaks of sexually transmitted disease are difficult to detect, and the genitourinary medicine consultant may be the first to recognise the problem. The timescales within which such outbreaks may be detected, investigated, and controlled may be longer than those for other outbreaks. Investigations of outbreaks of infectious disease are usually led by the local consultant in communicable disease control, but outbreaks of sexually transmitted disease may require different ways of working. Each of the outbreaks of syphilis to which we refer involved a collaborative approach between local ...

Statutory Instruments made by the Assembly are numbered in the main United Kingdom series with their own sub-series. The Welsh language has official equal status with the English language in Wales so every Statutory Instrument made by the Assembly is officially published in both English and Welsh. Only the titles of the English-language version are reproduced here. The Statutory Instruments are secondary legislation, deriving their power from the Acts of Parliament establishing and transferring functions and powers to the Welsh Assembly. LLMF (originally LLF) was formed in 1997 but the story began some three years earlier. Marilyn Jones, LLFs former Chairperson explains:. In 1994 my husband needed stem cell treatment for his relapsed Hodgkins Lymphoma. This had to be carried out in Cardiff, because back then no similar facilities were available in Swansea. Already feeling very weak, the constant travelling was just exhausting. He felt so isolated during his 6 week stay at Cardiffs Bone Marrow Transplant Unit (BMTU) and that combined with the familys constant travelling from Swansea, placed an enormous strain on all of us.. At the same time, also in Cardiff, the young wife of a fellow patient was distressed because their car had broken down, they simply couldnt afford to have it repaired. To reach Cardiff she needed to catch 3 buses, greatly increasing her time away from their children, and significantly reducing time she could spend with her husband. All in all this seemed to us a terrible burden on top of the existing ...

In 2015, Cycling UK convinced the Welsh Government that responsible off-road cycling is possible and should be encouraged. The Government listened to over 4,000 cyclists and are now consulting on how to make this a reality.. Cycling UK and Open MTB think this is a great opportunity to open up Wales, for more people to enjoy cycling while benefiting the rural economy, and we need your support to make it happen.. This isnt just about cycling. Weve been working with the wider alliance of Outdoor Access Wales, which includes groups like the Ramblers and the British Horse Society, to make sure everyone can enjoy the countryside equally.. You dont have to live in Wales to take part - you just have to agree that you should be able to cycle legally on more than 21% of the Rights of Way network. This principle works in Scotland, and if were successful theres no reason it cant work in other parts of the UK.. Fill in the short form, click "next" and youll be sent to an editable letter supporting ...

I am very proud of what we do at Rhug. I have a great team, and I often wonder when I am abroad why our meat is being bought, by some of the most important and well known accounts in these far off places. They could be buying Welsh lamb, but they are buying Rhug lamb. The one thing I think which makes a big point of difference is the way we produce these animals. Using the highest animal welfare standards, enforced upon us by The Soil Association, our governing body, we cut out all stress, and by cutting out stress you end up with something, that is so much better. I am Robert Newborough, I am the 8th Baron Newborough. The family name is Wynn, and we have resided in Wales since the 9th century. Up until 1938 we owned a large proportion of North Wales. Glynllifon was the family home until 1948, and was by far the largest estate that the family owned. Rhug came into the family in 1637 by marriage. The previous house was burned down, and the house that exists at the moment was built in about 1810. ...
There are 13,480 people registered in Wales as having a hearing impairment and in 2015-16, 65 people had cochlear implant surgery. The new 26 week target, announced by the Welsh Government on Friday, includes a 36-week aim for the most complex cases. Over the next three years, the Welsh health specialist services committee will work with health boards to achieve this. Specialist cochlear implant service providers are based at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff and Ysbyty Glan Clwyd in Denbighshire. Health secretary Vaughan Gething said quicker surgery for those who are deaf or hard of hearing will allow them to lead more-normal lives again. For many people, deafness can have a significant impact on their quality of life, affecting employment, recreation and relationships, he added ...

Today is my birthday and I dont think Ive ever felt as lonely as I do right now. I went out for drinks on Saturday and hardly anyone bothered to turn up, and the ones that did all left early for really shitty reasons, and now today only two friends have wished me a happy birthday. I appreciate theyre all probably in work, but theyve all been active on Facebook etc. It makes me feel really childish saying that sort of thing, but its actually quite upsetting. Im seeing a girl whos currently living in North Wales until she starts work in Cardiff next month. She knows when my birthday is, but I even had to remind her last night that it was today. She sent me a happy birthday text this morning, but shes just been on her lunch break for the past hour and I didnt get a quick phone call to say hello or anything, and now shes got plans all evening so Im unlikely to speak to her all day. I realise how whiny and childish this all sounds, and Im not posting this to look for sympathy, but its ...

The policies implemented in London of slashing the Higher Education budget in England, which will result in less money being transferred over to the Welsh Assembly Government, and opening up Higher Education to the market further by significantly raising fees, threatens to damage Welsh universities. Injecting drug use is a key risk factor, for several infections of public health importance, especially hepatitis B (HBV) and hepatitis C (HCV). In England and Wales, where less than 1% of the population are likely to be injecting drug users (IDUs), approximately 38% of laboratory reports of HBV, and 95% of HCV reports are attributed to injecting drug use. Voluntary unlinked anonymous surveys have been performed on IDUs in contact with specialist agencies throughout England and Wales. Since 1990 more than 20,000 saliva samples from current IDUs have been tested for markers of infection for HBV, HCV testing has been included since 1998. The analysis here considers those IDUs tested for HBV and HCV (n = 5,682) from 1998-2003. This study derives maximum likelihood estimates of the force of infection (the rate at which susceptible IDUs acquire infection) for HBV and HCV in the IDU population and their trends over time and injecting career length. The presence of individual heterogeneity of risk behaviour

There is a massive research establishment at Cardiff and the Vale where they have been searching for the genes for schizophrenia for decades. What service users need are properly funded humane services. Cardiff is notorious for its use of ECT as highlighted by a programme of Radio Wales recently. A lady who suffered post partum psychosis was given 10 treatments. She thought it helped.....what would have helped was access to a mother and baby unit..there is not one in the whole of Wales. Mike Owen claimed that things have improved Really? He seemed to be more concerned not to upset the Welsh government than speak honestly about the state of services in Wales. That lady and her partner found the experience of admission to a psychiatric hospital in Wales distressing and frighning.so she ended up having ECT-after a Skype consultation with the team. It is also the case that there are no services for youngsters, including those who self harm or have eating problems.they get shunted all over the ...
