This updated and spatially extensive frost-ring study involves the systematic identification of frost rings in high-elevation pines located in 16 western USA tree-ring sites whose chronologies range from 1692 BC to AD 2000. Several notable frost events were identified, based on the criteria of frost damage occurring in greater than 25% of trees at a given site and in two or more sites. The spatial variations between frost events indicate regional variations based on differences in elevation, latitude, and the location of polar outbreaks and their associated upper-level atmosphere circulation patterns. Stop me if youve heard this before. A powerful volcanic eruption in Iceland disrupts air travel across Europe. If it sounds like 2010 all over again, thats because it is. However, theres a small difference in that a different volcano is causing travel problems. This time, the culprit is Icelands Grimsvoetn Volcano, which erupted over the weekend. British officials fear that ash from Grimsvoetn may disrupt air travel. However, officials say a Europe-wide air travel shutdownprobably isnt going to happen.. Then again, didnt they say that last time? I think they did. Abstract: The effects of NaOAc removal of carbonates, H2O2 removal of organic materials, and sodium citrate-bicarbonate-dithionite (SCBD) removal of iron oxides upon the X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) characteristics of clay minerals present within weathered volcanic ash deposits were examined. All pretreatments of samples derived from the Ae and Bhf horizons containing volcanic ash resulted in dramatic increases in XRD peak intensities, while the treatment of IIC-horizon samples resulted in subdued XRD peak intensities. Also, the chemical treatments produced an apparent increase in the amount of expandable clay minerals within the Ae horizon, due probably to the hydrolysis and removal of interlayer Al3+ when H2O2 and SCBD were used.
