Voice rest is often prescribed after the surgical removal of benign vocal fold lesions. Adherence to voice rest recommendations and recovery from phonomicrosurgery present unique challenges to patients and clinicians. The purpose of this article was to summarize what is currently known about adherence to voice rest, the impact of voice rest on patient-reported quality of life, and the potential role of personality in adherence to treatment recommendations.. Voice rest is a form of vocal hygiene treatment that is aimed at improving laryngeal health and function (Thomas & Stemple, 2007). There are primarily two types of voice rest protocols used in the postoperative management of patients. Absolute voice rest involves the complete cessation of voice use for a specified time period. In contrast, relative voice rest involves a significant decrease and/or modification in the habitual pattern of voice use (Thomas & Stemple, 2007; van der Merwe, 2004). Otolaryngologists frequently recommend voice rest ...
Apparatus, computer-readable storage medium, and method associated with orienting a display image are described. In embodiments, a computing device may include a speech recognition module to process and recognize a voice command and a voice command module coupled with the speech recognition module. The voice command module may be configured to select, in response to recognition of an initial portion of the voice command, a plurality of voice commands having the same initial portion. The voice recognition module may be further configured to initiate execution of or stage for execution individual voice commands of the plurality of voice commands. On recognition of the entire voice command, the voice command module may be configured to select a result of the execution of an individual voice command or initiate execution of a staged for execution voice command.
Voice and tone. Tone and voice. Though the words voice and tone are often used interchangeably, theyre not synonyms. Our voice makes us unique, and our tone makes us sound like humans. Establishing a likable voice is critical for brands, but theres more to it. Companies that acknowledge the distinction-maintaining a consistent voice and paying careful attention to their tone-publish more meaningful web content and build better relationships with their users.. Whats the bigger difference between voice and tone? Our companys voice is an expression of personality, and its ingrained in every piece of content we publish. Our voice is who we are. Our brands voice naturally grows over time, but it generally stays the same from day to day. Our brands tone, on the other hand, should change often. Tone of voice is an adaptive reflection of feelings. Think of it in terms of your own voice and tone: You have only one voice, but you probably use a certain tone when youre talking to friends or ...
Below are my conclusions about my own voice hearing experience and I believe that drawing these conclusions has helped me silence my voice.. 1. Anti-Psychotics can quieten or silence my voice (this seems to vary from person to person). My problem was that my anti-psychotic seemed to block out my voice but made me very tired and down even on a low dose. This is why I kept trying to come off it and why I felt I had to face up to my voice.. 2. If my voice kept me awake at night, I found it best to take a sleeping pill every few nights to get a really good sleep (Consult your GP about this). When I was tired and demoralised I didnt think straight and I needed a good nights sleep.. 3. My Voice fed off my desire to experience something mystical in life. My voice used this desire to draw me in. My voice promised secret knowledge, sometimes described a frightening world or said I was a special person. I ended up concluding that my voice was just a voice and thats all it would ever be.. 4. My voice was ...
We have talked about voice before in this column in connection with slipstream, especially reader perception of voice. (1) This time were going to tackle the authors use of voice, the elements that contribute to voice and how it is created. Every work of fiction has a voice, be it the voice of the fictional first-person narrator, or the voice of the implied author-the controlling presence or authorial voice behind the characters of the story. The distinctive qualities of the authors voice are manifested by his or her method of expression (for example, an ironic narrator or a lyric persona), specific language, and so forth. So-called transparent narrative is just as much a form of voice as fiction which explicitly calls attention to its own language and plot devices-the difference is more like that between those who stand in a corner at parties observing, and those who make sure that people notice what they are up to. Voice when understood in this way has also been referred to as the ...

Individuals may abuse the voice continually talking in noisy situations, such as around machinery, in buses or cars, at parties, at sports events, over the sound of television, record players, or radios. This vocal abuse is intensified when the voice is misused in pitch, tone focus, or breath support.. Other factors that can cause vocal misuse and abuse and contribute to spastic dysphonia are an inappropriate vocal image and a wrong vocal identity. A vocal image is the sound or type of voice which appeals to you and which you try to use, as well as a sound of voice which you do not like and try to avoid using. The vocal image creates the vocal identity or the way you want to sound.. For example, if Philip, who has a natural tenor voice, thinks that a bass voice sounds more authoritarian and masculine, he tries to project a wrong vocal image. If he uses the phony bass voice, he is misusing his natural voice, thereby establishing a wrong vocal identity. Sues natural voice would sound something ...
In my early work, I used aerodynamic measures to study articulatory and suprasegmental differences between young children and adults (Stathopoulos & Weismer, 1983, 1985a, 1985b). Later, I became interested in the respiratory and laryngeal physiologic events that contribute to childrens voice production and how these functional events help to differentiate a child voice from an adult voice. I used as my examples some important work on childrens speech and voice (Crystal & House, 1988; Smith, 1991; Smith&McClean-Muse, 1987). One of the early implicit, and later, explicit questions I asked was based on this previous work. The question was: When do childrens voices and speech become adult-like? This question is still being asked in even the most recent articles about childrens voice and speech production (Fitch & Giedd, 1999; Lee, Potamianos, & Narayanan, 1999; Smith & Goffman, 1998). The inconsistency in researchers conclusions about when childrens voices become adult-like is striking. Many of ...

The voice is an important determinant factor that reveals whether an individual is male or female.. Hoarseness of Voice. May result from overuse or misuse of the voice, infection of the vocal cords, or any accident resulting to the malfunction of the vocal cords and larynx. Thus, a thorough examination is required for accurate diagnosis and treatment.. Laryngoplasty. Advancement in medical science with the advent of modern technology has greatly enhanced the performance of surgery for correcting or improving the quality of voice. Voice patterns can now be altered depending on the desired voice pitch either from female to male or vice versa as the cause may be.. Laryngoplasty also attains the desired result of reducing of the prominence of the Adams apple, a male characteristic.. The alteration of the voice pitch frequency is an important step in the transsexual change of an individual to make a person blend in the gender of his or her preference.. Corrections of low voice pitch pattern. ...
A system and method for providing voice authentication during a sale transaction through a telephone system or other communication means, wherein users to the service may require voice authentication as a prerequisite to conduct a conventional credit card or debit transaction. The voice authentication step is performed based on a comparison between a previously recorded voice message and the voice message inserted through the system using the voice browser and the voice recognition technology.
Disclosed are an alarm method and system based on voice events, and a building method on behavior trajectory thereof. The system comprises a signal sensor, a voice-event detector and notice and alarm element. In the method, voice signals are captured from a remote unit in an environment. The captured voice signals are classified into at least a voice event. As such, an emergent-event notice is automatically transmitted out if one of predefined emergent events is detected. In the building method on behavior trajectory, messages on voice events are continuously recorded. When the number of the recorded voice events reaches a threshold, a behavior trajectory is constructed, in which a behavior consists of two or more voice events or a single voice event.
PurposeInterrater disagreements in ratings of quality plague the study of voice. This study compared 2 methods for handling this variability.. MethodListeners provided multiple breathiness ratings for 2 sets of pathological voices, one including 20 male and 20 female voices unselected for quality and one including 20 breathy female voices. Ratings for each listener were averaged together, mean ratings were z transformed, and the likelihood that 2 listeners would agree exactly in their ratings was calculated as a function of averaging and standardizing condition. Data were also multidimensionally scaled to examine similarities among listeners in perceptual strategy. Results were compared with parallel analyses of existing breathiness ratings of the same voices gathered using a method-of-adjustment task.. ResultsThree-way interactions between the mean rating for a voice, standardization condition, and the number of voices averaged together were observed, but no main effect of averaging condition ...
Excellent Voice Recovering from surgery to remove a tumor from the thyroid gland, Dr. R. found his voice was hoarse, lacked carrying power, and faded or failed within a few minutes of conversation. Rather than have a teflon injection into the paralyzed vocal cord, Dr. R. elected to try direct voice rehabilitation. His surgeon, William Longmire, M.D., UCLA Medical Center, referred him to me. I realized, from what Dr. R. told me, he had been having voice trouble before his surgery without knowing it. His voice had been failing and fading, but he assumed this was normal. I concluded it would take a year for him to regain his voice-a better voice than he had ever had. It took him one year, almost to the day. That was twenty years ago. Recently, Dr. R. was on my television show, speaking with the excellent voice he worked for and obtained many years ago. He said he never gets hoarse or loses his voice anymore. His voice is clear and efficient, yet he still has a paralyzed vocal cord. Not too long ...
The most important element in the process of positively changing your childs relationship with their voice is the support they got from the family. Unfortunately, our research has shown that being in the mental health care system had no positive effect on the voices, although we did find that being referred to a psychotherapist who accepted the reality of the voices and were prepared to discuss their meaning with the child did have a positive influence on how the child coped with their voices.. We also saw that normalising the experience can help parents to deal with the voices - try not to think of it as a terrible disaster, but as a signal for something that is troubling your child and that can be resolved. On the other hand, if parents cannot accept that voice hearing in itself is normal, but believe the voices to be an illness and are afraid of the voices, then the child naturally picks up this feeling. Imagine for a moment if you were the child and were afraid of the voices and when you ...
Hello, i read all what was written by you, and it helped its not the first time that i made a research about hearing a voice or voices, i did it if i recall a year ago or maybe more any way thats not importand the important thing that made me do a research again and this site came up is that 2 days ago i was at work and i started to hear… i call it my consciousness because from my expiriance with this voice or voices that i hear did some experiments and from experimenting i came up with somethings this voice or voices sometimes is me but i the past when i used to use some words to explane or make a conversation but me when i did not hear a voice or voices (or maybe i heard but did not notice them) anyway thats the reason i call it a consciousness because its a part of me and has nothing to do with something super natural but is a plane and simple my foult that i hear even tho i think we shuld change this hearing into producing because its all in our heads we dont have a tiny persons or ...
As my fellow Fictorians are showing you so far this month, there are many ways to set yourself apart as a writer. In my mind, the most memorable way to set yourself apart is voice, to the surprise of no one. In past posts, Ive highlighted how you might create tension with narrative voice, and used well-known authors with distinct voices as examples. In this post, Id like to dive into what voice is, the many ways one can use it, and highlight some examples that will hopefully give you plenty of ideas.. First, what is voice? Voice goes by many names. Style. Point of View. Vernacular. Narrative voice. Language. It is all of these things. For the sake of clarity, I defer to my friend Mignon, whom many of you may know as Grammar Girl. Julie Wildhaber writes on the Grammar Girl website:. Voice is the distinct personality, style, or point of view of a piece of writing or any other creative work. Voice is what Simon Cowell is talking about when he tells American Idol contestants to make a song their ...
My main concern is I dont know since when (but since more than 7 years), but my voice pitch is usually under a very short range and sounds as if something isnt letting my voice out completely. My voice wasnt originally this way. On a social gathering or any sort of place that isnt silent, im barely audible. What I mean is, the voice range is fine if someone is besides me (in an silent room), otherwise, I have to stress and talk more louder to be heard. Yet, the voice quality is unpleasant I could say my throat is easily stressed, not sure if that is the case. I can also feel some noticeable roughness persistently on my throat while speaking and while idle. I cant talk more than 2 minutes continuously, if I do, my voice gets worse and the audibility decreases even further. When I wake up, the voice is usually much better, but very quickly, its begins to worsen. It might happen that sometimes during the day, my voice gets better, but thats very short lived ...

Im just going to also note that trying to deepen your voice may be the totally, totally, totally wrong thing to do for you. TOTALLY. Depending on your individual vocal range and your vocal technique, trying to deepen can actually make the volume problem worse. Because a deeper voice is often associated with authority, people with naturally lighter voices can often strain and strangle themselves in an attempt to reach a range that is just not right for them. I cant tell you where your voice should naturally fall (a voice teacher can help you with this), but I will say that if you feel like your voice is at all strained or caught in your throat while youre trying to sound deeper, then deeper is probably not right for you. You can also try paying attention to what happens to your voice after youve been doing vocal warmups for ten or twenty minutes. Does your voice sound a little lighter than usual after warming up? If so, its probably sitting more appropriately in your natural range ...
Creating a better understanding of how humans use and control their voice is the focus of a five-year study being led by a University of Maine researcher.. Xudong Zheng, an assistant professor of mechanical engineering, is leading the project that will use computer models to look at the role of mucosal wave propagation in sound production during phonation. His long-term goal is to understand the mechanism that is responsible for the range, complexity and uniqueness of the human voice in order to provide personalized voice care.. The National Science Foundation recently awarded Zheng a $513,523 CAREER grant for his project, Sound Production by Flow Induced Elastic Wave with Application to Human Phonation.. Mammal vocalization is characterized by mucosal wave propagation of the vocal folds that generate an alternative shape of the glottis, the part of the larynx that contains the vocal cords and the opening between them. The movement of the mucous membrane is the flow-induced elastic wave that ...
Many are understandably wary of biomedical treatments of voice-hearing, as they believe such approaches firstly, needlessly pathologise the experience of voice hearing and, secondly, resort to what are seen as extreme measures to simply get rid of voices. I am sympathetic to these arguments. I agree that there is no need to pathologise the voice hearing experience itself, and in many cases we should be trying to get at other underlying problems, such as appraisals of the voices and the subsequent distress caused. However, the fact remains that we are not always capable of helping people as we would like to. Although many voice hearers say that they would prefer to keep their voices, a sizable proportion would prefer not to, according to a study conducted with members of the Dutch Resonance Foundation and members of a Voice Clinic. I would argue that the more potential ways of helping people, the better. As Nev Jones eloquently put it in a blog post earlier this year:. ...
Many people in the world want an attractive, deeper, louder and sexier voice. But many of you dont know the fact that everyone is not born with special voice, but I can tell you the secret about the voice. You have seen many public figures or celebrities with very good voice, but some of them are not born with special voice. They just know the fact that if we are not born with attractive voice but we can make it better with a few tips and techniques and can use our voice to its full potential. So yes, anyone can make his or her voice attractive and deeper...
Mothers voice is a foundational stimulus and is one of the most salient vocal sources in a childs life. Here we have identified the brain structures and network that are sensitive to brief (,1 s) samples of pseudoword speech sounds produced by each childs mother compared to female control voices. We observed distinct representations of mothers voice in a wide range of brain structures, encompassing not only auditory and voice-selective structures in the temporal cortex but also structures of the reward circuit including the NAc, OFC, and vmPFC, structures implicated in affective processes, including the amygdala, and regions associated with visual face processing, including fusiform cortex. Importantly, connectivity analyses revealed that coordinated neural activity between voice-selective regions and structures serving reward, affective, face processing, salience detection, and mnemonic functions predicts social communication abilities. Our results suggest that hearing mothers voice, a ...

Same goes for those things some brilliant marketing creep has decided to make female; like cell phones and GPS units for the car. Their synthetic voices, if not tired and meaningless are none the less dispassionate and unsympathetic while telling you to make the next legal U turn. We seem to take it for granted that this sort of robot should sound aristocratically female. I mean Americans when I say we, of course. I read this morning that BMW had to recall a female GPS system in their domestic versions, German males being reluctant to following orders from female cars. I admit I did contact General Motors about converting my cars female navigation voice to a German male voice as Id be more likely to do what it said. Ive been conditioned to ignoring female voices in my car for a long time -- safety reasons, of course. The voice from the passenger seat being so likely to shout things like Right Here! meaning turn left here. I have to point out that the GPS and other things in the car are ...
The syllables ah, au, and the vowels oo and o, will be found to be the most favorable for the culture for the female voice. The process of cultivating the female voice is quite different from that of the male voice, from the fact that three registers are to be considered, and if either are exaggerated ruination of the voice will be inevitable. On the lowest tones the ah will be found to be preferable, the chin being allowed to fall downward and backward. If a full, sombre tone is desired, the syllable au or the vowels oo, with a vertical position of the lips, will be found favorable for the production of this quality of tone. On the high tones of the voice it will be found beneficial to allow the e to approach the sound of ah, with the chin well back, and the upper lip sufficiently raised to show the upper teeth as in smiling; by this mode the highest and best tones can be produced in the clear timbre. If the ah, as produced on the low, and sometimes on the middle tones of the voice, should be ...
Voice use. Voice ability will be variable after surgery depending on the procedure. Do not be alarmed if the voice is better right after the surgery than 24 hours after surgery, since swelling from the surgery may take 24 hours before becoming maximal. If you are a voice professional, voice rest for 4 days is usually necessary before trying to speak. With the doctors permission on follow up, you may have enough voice to go onto modified voice rest for one week. To check if you are ready for modified voice use, you can do a sigh or gentle hum…. If there is an easily produced sound, you may use it at that pitch for speaking in a quiet room. Loud or stage whisper is not to be used. DO NOT force the voice. If you are a singer or voice professional, you must be checked at one week after surgery to determine if you are ready to go back to work. If you are on voice rest, carry an index card that says: Voice rest. Doctors orders. Thank you. ...

As a voice teacher, I was drawn to fitness to develop a sports-specific training protocol for singers. Corrective exercise techniques are often just as important as vocalises for helping my students to become the best singers they can be. Excellent alignment is vital for breath management, volume and resonance when performing an opera aria, but resolving postural distortions can offer great benefits for voices of all kinds. Whether you use your voice for singing, public speaking, leading a group training class, or just in the course of normal conversation, a well-balanced musculature is the foundation for a well-projected, resonant voice, whereas postural distortions will lead to compromised vocal production (1,2).. People often believe that great singing voices are purely the result of genetics. In fact, a great deal can be done to free and enhance anyones natural voice through cultivating balance in the musculature that governs breathing and laryngeal function. This post will examine the ways ...
I can understand finding a voice irritating, but some of these comments are extremely close-minded. I happen to be a young woman, 21 years old, and have a creaky voice. (For reference, I live in the Ohio River Valley region, not that it makes a difference.) In fact, thats how I tumbled upon this article (although it was not what I was looking for, I read it anyway). I have always had this annoying inflection in my voice (ever since I was a child, and there were times I didnt like my voice). Some people commenting make it seem that the majority of girls try to sound this way? While the voices may irritate you, do you honestly think the majority of women in their twenties are thinking about how, and attempting, to make their voices creak? Perhaps it was the voice they were born with and learned language with. Perhaps it stems from when they learned their first words, their dialect, their vocal capabilities, and perhaps subconsciously, the voices that theyve heard growing up. I honestly ...
The significant aim of this article is to know about voice recognition technology. Speech recognition is a broader explanation which refers to technology
The error rate using voice recognition with correctionists was slightly better than the pre-voice recognition rate, according to the researchers; however when the correctionist was removed, the error rate rose to 2.5 times higher in reports generated by voice recognition with self-correction.. The rate of errors after two years of using voice recognition rose to 1.5 times higher than three months after implementation of voice recognition. Fortunately, only two reports in the third category and one report in the fourth category contained major errors, Momenin said.. Using voice recognition technology results in a high frequency of transcription errors compared to traditional transcription method, jeopardizing the quality of radiology reports, he added. Most of the errors did not affect the core meaning of the report and are unlikely to alter patient management; however many made strangely worded reports.. Comparing reports made after two years using voice recognition with those generated ...
The term Phonosurgery denotes restoration of Voice by using various surgical techniques. The melody of human voice depends on the vocal ligament an elastic structure of the vocal folds, which is not present in any other species. So there is no experimental model for human voice.. Human voice acts as a primary instrument to project our personalities in the society. Voice problems may arise from laryngeal or systemic disease or trauma or misuse. The result of voice dysfunction is sometimes dewasting, endanger the life of professional voice users like singers, actors, politicians, educators etc.. Many people, suffering from voice disorders live desperately in society with the opinion that no proper treatment is available for their problems. In fact invention of phonosurgical techniques has created a ray of hope for such victims of voice disorders.. Voice problems may be of congenital, traumatic, inflammatory, neoplastic, neurological or functional origin. The diagnosis of voice disorders starts ...
The researchers analyzed changes in voice quality in 27 patients undergoing rhinoplasty at two hospitals in Iran, where rhinoplasty is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures. The patients were 22 women and five men, average age 24 years. Twenty-two percent of the patients used their voice professionally.. After rhinoplasty, patients completed a standard questionnaire to rate perceived problems with their voice. In addition, recordings of the patients voices made before and after rhinoplasty were compared by trained listeners, who were unaware of whether they were hearing the before or after recordings.. The questionnaire responses showed worsening in some areas of voice quality: particularly in the physical and emotional subscales, reflecting patients perceptions of their voice and their emotional responses to it. There was no change on the functional subscale, reflecting the effects of voice on daily activities.. The trained listeners also perceived changes in voice quality, including ...
Did you ever have experienced voice related problems during your daily life, your work as a singer or teacher? Symptoms like hoarseness, difficulties producing a strong or normal voice, difficulties reaching that high pitch or discomfort or pain in the laryngeal region? Seeking help, where do you go?. The General Practitioner (GP), Ear, nose and throat (ENT) specialist or laryngologist, speech therapist are mainly professions of first choice. But what role can a specialized physical therapist like a CRAFTA® therapist play for you?. Voice problems (Dysphonia) are prevalent in all ages.. Prevalence of voice disorders is variable. Amongst the most reported disorders are Laryngitis (8%), vocal fold nodules (VFN) and functional voice disorder (FVD) both about 20% and vocal fold paralyses (VFP) about 14%. Nodules are mostly seen in young people, both VFP and FVD in the elderly. In adults FVD was the most prevalent disorder (De Bodt et. al. 2015). Different types of dysphonia are described but an ...
TY - JOUR. T1 - Effects of perturbation magnitude and voice F0 level on the pitch-shift reflex. AU - Liu, Hanjun. AU - Larson, Chuck. PY - 2007/12/1. Y1 - 2007/12/1. N2 - The purpose of the present study was to investigate the responsiveness of the pitch-shift reflex to small magnitude stimuli and voice fundamental frequency (F0) level. English speakers received pitch-shifted voice feedback (±10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 cents, 200 ms duration) during vowel phonations at a high and a low F0 level. Mean pitch-shift response magnitude increased as a function of pitch-shift stimulus magnitude, but when expressed as a percent of stimulus magnitude, declined from 100% with ±10 cents to 37% with ±50 cents stimuli. Response magnitudes were larger and latencies were shorter with a high F0 level (16 cents;130 ms) compared to a low F0 level (13 cents;152 ms). Data from the present study demonstrate that vocal response magnitudes are equal to small perturbation magnitudes, and they are larger and faster with ...

The vocal folds, groups of muscle tissue in the larynx, are normally open to allow breathing. When you speak, they close, and air from the lungs makes them vibrate. This produces sound. The size and shape of the vocal folds and surrounding cavities (throat, mouth and nose) help determine the pitch, volume and tone of your voice. This is what makes it unique. When illness or disease affects your voice, it can change the pitch, volume and quality of sound. Symptoms of a voice disorder include a hoarse, raspy or weak voice; decreased range in pitch, volume and projection; vocal fatigue; shortness of breath; coughing; sore throat; chronic throat clearing and voice loss. If these symptoms last longer than two weeks, seek the attention of a doctor. An otolaryngologist is the most qualified medical professional for diagnosing voice problems. ...
A method and apparatus utilizes a personal speech recognition system to enable data retrieval assistance operators to retrieve customer requested information from an information database based upon a voiced inquiry by the operator. Instead of requiring an operator to interpret a calling customers request and communicate the same to a computer via a number of keyboard strokes, the live operator may submit the same or equivalent inquiry via a voice utterance that is recognized by the searching computer as a searchable inquiry by a speech recognition system, which is preferably trained to recognize the particular voice of the live operator. Only the voice of the live operator needs to be identified by the voice recognition unit, and the incorporation of the voice recognition technology into the system is thus transparent to the requesting customer. Once the appropriate data is found, the information is released to the requester in a conventional manner, automatically, or after a particular voice
XMOS is one of the many companies that has ventured in voice recognition technology. They created the VocalFusion XVF3500 device, the first voice processor to have true stereo-AEC support in a far-field linear microphone array solution. Voice recognition is a relatively new technology for consumers which we came to know with Siri, google home, Alexa etc. However, this technology has been developed since 1950s with a very limited understanding of numbers. Nowadays, voice recognition software can answer all kind of questions, perform activities (such as calls, notes and web searches), and even answer to sarcastic questions. Experts predict that 50 % of all web searches will be made using voice by 2020.. Voice recognition is not only about not using keyboards, but also about security and usability. Thanks to software such as Siri people can now make phone calls in the car without even looking at their phone, play music and send messages. The biggest problem is accuracy specially when dealing with ...
The Hearing Voices Movement is the name used by organizations and individuals advocating the hearing voices approach, an alternative way of understanding the experience of those people who hear voices. In the medical professional literature, voices are most often referred to as auditory hallucinations or verbal hallucinations. The movement uses the term voices, which it feels is a more accurate and user-friendly term. The movement was instigated by Marius Romme, Sandra Escher and Patsy Hage in 1987. It challenges the notion that to hear voices is necessarily a characteristic of mental illness. Instead it regards hearing voices as a meaningful and understandable, although unusual, human variation. It therefore rejects the stigma and pathologisation of hearing voices and advocates human rights, social justice and support for people who hear voices that is empowering and recovery focused. The movement thus challenges the medical model of mental illness, specifically the validity of the ...
Whiny - high in pitch - nasal - hoarse - throaty - gravelly - scratchy - whispery - soft - loud - shrill - strident - thick - thin - childlike - old - muddy - chirpy - sharp - raspy - tight - wispy - wimpy - shaky - heavy accent.. If just one of those descriptions is typical of how you sound, you should think about a course in voice improvement because the words that describe a dynamic speaking voice are not found in that list.. Those descriptions would be rich - warm - deep - and full of resonance.. You may have noticed that the monotone voice and mumbling were not included in the above example because neither of those characteristics describe the actual quality of the voice. They describe what you are doing (or not doing) with the voice and will need additional work.. Should you be displeased with how you sound, do some research and find someone who will teach you how to use your chest as your primary sounding board. This is a priority because all of those adjectives, whatever they may be, ...

The objective of this investigation is to explore the interaction of water and caffeine on voice performance through (a) acoustic measures of voice, and (b) aerodynamic measurements (minimum lung pressure required to initiate phonation. The acoustic and aerodynamic measurements were selected for this study in an effort to demonstrate the effects of four levels of hydration and caffeine status on voice quality: 1) caffeine and water1 (i.e.., Experimental Group 1 - ingestion of 200 mg of caffeine in conjunction with 500 ml of water), 2) caffeine and water2 (i.e., Experimental Group 2 - ingestion of 200 mg of caffeine in conjunction with 1.0 liter of water), 3)caffeine only (i.e., Experimental Group 3: ingestion of 200 mg of caffeine and no water), and 4) control (i.e. no ingestion of caffeine or water). The research question involves whether systemic hydration may reduce degradation on voice performance caused by caffeine ingestion. It is hypothesized that the hydration conditions will result in a ...

By the common opinion, they hardly, if at all, can restore a speaking voice, let alone a singing voice. And thus, the voice, (speaking and…

TY - JOUR. T1 - Breathy voice and low-register. T2 - A case of trading relation in Shanghai Chinese tone perception?. AU - Gao, Jiayin. AU - Hallé, Pierre. AU - Draxler, Christoph. PY - 2019/9. Y1 - 2019/9. N2 - In Shanghai Chinese as well as many other Wu dialects, breathy voice is a well-documented accompaniment of the low-register tone syllables with obstruent as well as sonorant onsets. But Shanghai Chinese is rapidly changing and the breathy voice associated with low-register tones tends to disappear in young speakers productions. In this study, we asked whether breathy voice is nevertheless still perceived and whether it pushes tone identification toward low-register tones. We conducted forced-choice tone identification tests on young native listeners of Shanghai Chinese, using low-high register tone continua-from tone T3 (23) to tone T2 (34)-imposed on base syllables with either modal or breathy voice quality, and beginning with various onset consonants. We used continua constructed ...

This paper explores the experiences of women who hear voices (auditory verbal hallucinations). We begin by examining historical understandings of women hearing voices, showing these have been driven by androcentric theories of how womens bodies functioned, leading to women being viewed as requiring their voices be interpreted by men. We show the twentieth-century was associated with recognition that the mental violation of womens minds (represented by some voice-hearing) was often a consequence of the physical violation of womens bodies. We next report the results of a qualitative study into voice-hearing womens experiences (N=8). This found similarities between womens relationships with their voices and their relationships with others and the wider social context. Finally, we present results from a quantitative study comparing voice-hearing in women (n=65) and men (n=132) in a psychiatric setting. Women were more likely than men to have certain forms of voice-hearing (voices conversing) and to

Purpose: The study aims to observe whether any systematic change in vocal fold configuration occurs during and after phonation into a tube using computerized tomography (CT). Materials and Methods: Ten participants diagnosed with functional dysphonia were included in the study. CT was performed when participants produced the sound (a:), phonated into a drinking straw and when repeating (a:) after the exercise. Similar procedure was performed with a stirring straw after 20 min of vocal rest. Anatomic variables included: (1) glottal area, (2) glottal width, (3) vertical vocal fold thickness, (4) vocal fold area, and (5) vocal fold length. Each vocal fold was separately analyzed. Results: Only glottal area for stirring straw was statistically different throughout the three time points. This variable increased during tube phonation compared to conditions pre- and post-tube. Discussion: Since vocal fold length did not change during tube phonation, the increment in glottal area was likely due to ...
My fellow Debs have all written wonderful posts about voice this week. Voice in the authorial sense-that certain something that permeates a writers literary works. The cachet attached to the words. The white on the snow, the melody in the birdsong, the stink on the skunk … okay, you get the drift. Everyone seems to agree that its difficult to define voice, but that its easy to recognize it.. So I wont be going there.. Well, except to reiterate that its something that develops with practice. The more you write, the more defined-recognizable-your unique voice will become. (So get cracking!). Today, however, Im going to take the topic literally rather than literarily, and tell you about a time my voice failed me. Big-time.. It was early in my post-college theater days. My day job was teaching at a private Catholic high school. (No, Im not Catholic. But thats not really relevant, so never mind.) But my evenings were spent indulging in my lust for the stage.. This particular acting job ...
