Vocational secondary education in Denmark (Danish: erhvervsuddannelse) takes place at special state-funded vocational schools (erhvervsskoler), most of which are either technical schools (tekniske skoler) or business colleges (handelsskoler). Through a combination of teaching in vocational schools and apprenticeship, mostly in private companies, students are trained for work as tradesmen, clerks, farmers etc. Vocational education takes 2-5 years and can be commenced after the completion of the compulsory primary folkeskole (public school), i.e. at age 15-16. Contrary to academically oriented types of secondary education such as the Gymnasium, vocational secondary education aims directly at jobs rather than higher education, although it is possible, with certain requirements, to enter a university to study for instance engineering upon completing vocational education. Students train for work in a specific profession (e.g. as an electrician or a chef), but the different education programmes are ...

The Evolution of CTE. For more than 100 years, what we now call career and technical education (CTE) courseworks main goal has been to prepare students with trade and life skills to help them become productive community members who are gainfully employed. On a national level, "vocational" education was founded on the premise that young people needed training to adapt to a newly industrialized workplace. As years passed, programs evolved to also pursue post-secondary education as part of a career continuum. When vocational education was rebranded in 2006 as "career and technical" education, the change represented a shift in career preparation philosophy. Combining technical skills and academic education strengthened CTE programming, preparing students with rigorous coursework, oftentimes allowing students to work, earn income, accumulate industry certifications and credentials, and receive college credit within the same academic year. 80% of high schoolers who took CTE and college preparation ...

Students positive emotions, such as enjoying learning activities at school, are increasingly recognized as being conducive to learning. Researchers therefore seek to understand the roles that teachers emotions and instructional behaviours play for promoting activity-related enjoyment among their students. This study is the first to investigate emotional crossover in vocational classrooms, combining Control-Value Theory and Broaden-and-Built Theory to substantiate potentially mediating teaching characteristics (clarity and support, enthusiastic teaching, application-orientation). Moreover, this study explores contextual moderators of crossover by comparing different types of training (classes in dual and in school-based training programs) as well as different domains of training (commercial, technical, and social occupations). Survey data were gathered from 77 teachers and 1522 students with a temporal distance of about 5 months, covering a considerable period of instructional interaction. Data were

Downloadable! Skill shortages are often portrayed as a major problem for the economies of many countries including the Australian economy. Yet, there is surprisingly little evidence about their prevalence, causes and consequences. This paper attempts to improve our understanding about these issues by using econometric methods to analyse the Business Longitudinal Database, an Australian panel data-set with information about skill shortages in small- and medium-sized businesses during 2004/05. We use this information to: (1) explore the incidence of skill shortages and the business attributes that are associated with them; (2) identify which businesses face more complex skill shortages, as measured by the number of different causes reported simultaneously; and, uniquely, (3) examine how this complexity affects a business response to skill shortages and aspects of their subsequent performance. We show that complex skill shortages are more likely than simpler (single-cause) skill shortages to persist and

This study investigated the post-school adjustment of mildly handicapped twelfth-grade students 2 years after they graduated or left high school. Two types of handicapped individuals were interviewed: 65 students in self-contained, vocational education programs and 46 students in resource programs. Students in both groups had unemployment rates comparable to their normal peers on the national and state level. On the local level, however, the unemployment rate of the handicapped individuals was almost twice as high as their nonhandicapped peers. Handicapped males were more likely to be employed than their female counterparts. Respondents who had summer jobs or other work experiences during the year were more likely to be employed than those who did not have these work experiences. Most handicapped individuals in both groups were satisfied with their jobs and relied heavily upon a
