During vitreoretinal surgery, the surgeon manipulates retinal tissue with tool-to-tissue interaction forces below the human sensory threshold. A force sensor (FS) integrated with conventional surgical tools may significantly improve the surgery outcome by providing tactile feedback to the surgeon. We designed and built a surgical tool integrated with a miniature FS with an outer diameter smaller than 1 mm for vitreoretinal surgery based on low-coherence Fabry-Pérot (FP) interferometry. The force sensing elements are located at the tool tip which is in direct contact with tissue during surgery and the FP cavity length is interrogated by a fiber-optic common-path phase-sensitive optical coherence tomography (OCT) system. We have calibrated the FSs response to axial and lateral forces and conducted experiments to verify that our FS can simultaneously measure both axial and lateral force components.. ©2012 Optical Society of America. We report on an implementation of coherence revival-based heterodyne swept source optical coherence tomography that is capable of simultaneously imaging the anterior and posterior eye. A polarization-encoded sample arm was used to efficiently focus orthogonal polarizations on the anterior segment and retina. Depth encoding was achieved using coherence revival, which allows for multiple depths within a sample to be simultaneously imaged and frequency encoded by carefully controlling the optical pathlength of each sample path. This design is a significant step toward whole-eye optical coherence tomography (OCT), which would enable customized ray-traced modeling of patient eyes to improve refractive surgical interventions and eliminate optical artifacts in retinal OCT diagnostics. We demonstrated the feasibility of this system for in vivo imaging by simultaneously acquiring images of the anterior segments and retinas in healthy human volunteers.. ©2012 Optical Society of America. Purpose: It is difficult to observe the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and choroid in eyes with macular hemorrhage because these have been hidden behind the hematoma. To evaluate the RPE and choroidal condition under macular hemorrhage using swept source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT).. Methods: The appearance of RPE and choroid at the foveal area (within 500μm) were evaluated using SS-OCT (DRI-OCT, Topcon) with 1060 nm light source. We also compared with the results using enhanced depth imaging (EDI) OCT (Spectralis OCT, Heidelberg) in the same cases. Subfoveal choroidal thickness was measured.. Results: Twenty-six eyes of 26 patients (13 men and 13 women) with macular hemorrhage were examined using SS-OCT and EDI-OCT. Sixteen eyes of 16 patients (mean age 74.1-year-old) in macroaneurysms rupture (MA) and ten eyes of 10 patients (mean age 70.2-year-old) in age-related macular degeneration (AMD). SS-OCT can visualize RPE in 23 eyes (88%) and choroid in 21 eyes (81%). EDI-OCT can ...
Standard optical systems in ophthalmology are strictly dedicated either to retinal or to anterior segment imaging due to the refractive properties of the eye. We demonstrate a swept source optical coherence tomography platform with an electrically tunable lens (ETL) for versatile 3D in vivo imaging of both the eyes anterior segment and the retina. The optimized optical setup with adaptive operational states of the ETL permits focusing on the retina and on the anterior segment. Dynamic control of the optical beam focus allows for OCT image enhancement, leading to the visualization of the vitreous details at both the vitreo-lenticular and vitreo-retinal attachment sites in an unprecedented manner. ETL tuning enables sequential visualization of the anterior and posterior segment of the eye, and such whole eye imaging can be also used to perform quantitative ocular biometry.. © 2018 Optical Society of America. https://doi.org/10.1364/OPTICA.5.000052. ...
Purpose : We present a new instrument that we call clinical-grade adaptive optics swept source optical coherence tomography (CAOSS-OCT) that is compact and capable of visualizing 3D human retinal structure with a high resolution in real-time. To demonstrate its functionality and clinical utility, in vivo retina images of research subjects are presented. Methods : CAOSS-OCT is capable of depth-resolved high resolution retinal imaging by incorporating an AO system with a high speed OCT engine. A wavelength swept laser with a center wavelength of 1060 nm was used as the OCT light source. In the CAOSS-OCT, two deformable optical elements were employed: a Multi-actuator Adaptive Lens (MAL) for optical aberration correction, and a Variable Focus Lens (VFL) for dynamic focusing. A series of photoreceptor images were acquired with the CAOSS-OCT at different retinal eccentricities with the focus set to the outer retina, and then images of nerve fiber layer were also obtained by interactively adjusting ...

The fitting of Antoine equation (Equation 1) to experimental data of perfluor-n-octane,22 allows to obtain A = 18.92, B = 5892, and C = 36.7. Experimental data points and the fitting curve are plotted in Figure 1 that shows that the vapor pressure increases with temperature (i.e., decreases with increasing cohesion forces between the particles of the liquid). With increased temperature, the increasing number of particles on the surface of the liquid has a sufficient kinetic energy to overcome the cohesion forces to pass vapor state. The partial pressure (or the fugacity) of perfluor-n-octane in the gas phase, PPC, is an index showing how much the liquid-vapor system is away from equilibrium. Indeed, if we assume that the vapor phase is ideal, the partial pressure takes the form where CPC (Equation 2) is the molar density of perfluor-n-octane in vapor phase. Generally, the vitrectomy surgery experiences a limited range of temperatures (T1, T2). Therefore, as a first approximation, one can assume ...

Heterogeneity in cardiac tissue microstructure is a potential mechanism for the generation and maintenance of arrhythmias. Abnormal changes in fiber orientation increase the likelihood of arrhythmia. We present optical coherence tomography (OCT) as a method to image myofibers in excised intact heart preparations. Three-dimensional (3-D) image sets were gathered from the rabbit right ventricular free wall (RVFW) using a microscope-integrated OCT system. An automated algorithm for fiber orientation quantification in the plane parallel to the wall surface was developed. The algorithm was validated by comparison with manual measurements. Quantifying fiber orientation in the plane parallel to the wall surface from OCT images can be used to help understand the conduction system of the specific sample being imaged ...

Near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence-based imaging has the potential to detect tumors with high sensitivity and high specificity in real time. Current approaches employ fluorescent dyes and operate mostly in the first NIR window (NIR-I, 700 - 900 nm) for image-guided use. To image tissue, visible light and fluorescence images are either taken with the same detector or with multiple cameras in different spectral ranges simultaneously or sequentially. Systems that can detect both visible and fluorescent imaging simultaneously use silicon-based detectors that are sensitive to visible and NIR-I spectral bands. However, to properly separate these narrowly-spaced passbands, expensive spectral filters with narrow fields-of-view are required. Other systems which instead use multiple cameras to detect visible light, NIR-I, and/or the second NIR window (NIR-II, 1000 - 1700 nm), must fuse the images from all these detectors to create the combined image via post processing. This image fusion requires precise ...

In those patients requiring vitreoretinal surgery and presenting opacity or corneal irregularity that prevents proper display, the use of a temporary keratoprostheses (QPT) is currently the best option. The QPT, implemented after trepanation of the opaque cornea, vitreoretinal surgery allows a correct visualization of intraocular structures. Once the vitreo-retinal surgery has been completed, the keratoprosthesis is removed and placed suture and corneal graft. In this way you can perform both procedures in a single surgical time, optimizing maneuvers in the vitreous space. The indication of this complex procedure is any vitreoretinal pathology whose surgery can not be performed by corneal opacity which is not medically treatable and prevents sufficient preoperative visualization. The vast majority of candidates for this surgery are from ocular trauma but I will present these cases that had severe endophthalmitis with severe infection and corneal opacity not permitting vitreoretinal surgery ...

0015] Before a surgeon performs a vitreoretinal surgery, a scrub nurse preferably fluidly couples luer lock fitting 12 to syringe 24. The scrub nurse places piston 28 into internal bore 29 of syringe 24 and uses a push rod (not shown) to slide piston 28 toward distal end 26 of syringe 24. The nurse fluidly couples a vacuum source 40 to a proximal end of syringe 24. During the vitreoretinal surgery, a surgeon inserts several trocar cannula 30 into scleratomies, as is described hereinabove. During the later stages of the surgery, the surgeon must extract the viscous fluid retinal tamponade, such as silicone oil, that was injected into the posterior segment of the eye. To perform such extraction, the surgeon first slides portion A of extraction sleeve 14 over the exterior surface of hub 34 of trocar cannula 30. The surgeon then activates vacuum source 40. Vacuum source 40 fluidly couples hub 34 within portion A of extraction sleeve 14, and a fluid tight seal is created between an exterior surface ...

Blindness is a devastating consequence of PVDs such as PDR and PVR. Currently, the progression of these diseases cannot be effectively prevented, and the treatment options are limited to vitreoretinal surgery. An effective pharmacological treatment is thus urgently needed to complement or potentially replace the surgical intervention. In the current study, we show statins novel function in inhibiting the Rho/Rho-kinase pathway, the contraction of collagen gel, and the progression of experimental PVR, suggesting the therapeutic potential of these compounds for the treatment of PVDs.. Various cytokines, such as TGF-β, connective tissue growth factor, interleukin-6, and platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), are overexpressed in the vitreous and membranes associated with PDR and PVR, and they contribute to the pathogenesis of these diseases (15,37-40). Among these cytokines, TGF-β2 induces the transformation of retinal pigment epithelial cells or hyalocytes to myofibroblastic cells (18,41) and ...
A holographic filter comprises a volume hologram recorded with Bragg surfaces for use in spectroscopic and spectral splitting applications. The Bragg planes in the holographic filter can be recorded to satisfy virtually any design constraint imposed upon the filter such as Raman, Lippmann, non-Snellian (slanted), curved, and multiplexed spectral filters. The holographic filter achieves maximal reduction of secondary maxima and sidelobes and obtains large wavelength selectivities, and varied grating constants.
We present an investigation into the characteristics of a normal dispersion mode-locked Yb-doped fiber laser using a birefringent plate as a spectral filter. Before implementing mode locking using a birefringent plate, the transmission characteristics of the birefringent plate were analyzed. It was observed that the center wavelength and the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the transmitted light varied according to the azimuthal angle and optical axis of the birefringent plate. The total dispersion value of the laser cavity was 0.04673 ps2 at a center wavelength of 1.03 μm. The mode locking was therefore achieved in the normal-dispersion region. The total cavity length of the Yb-doped fiber laser was about 1.9 m including free space, and the repetition rate of the mode-locked pulse was ∼104.2 MHz. The FWHM of the optical spectrum was ∼18.09 nm, and the pulse width measured by an autocorrelator was ∼1.71 ps assuming a Gaussian pulse shape. To obtain the transform limited pulse, a pulse ...

Later on, your sight will begin to return. The timing depends on the type of gas used: short-acting gas (SF6) takes 2 to 3 weeks to disappear; long-acting gas (C3F8) takes about 2 months. When the gas bubble is down to half size, you will see a horizontal line across your vision, bobbing up and down with head movement. This is where the gas meets the fluid which is gradually replacing it. It is just like a spirit level. You will have sight above this line, and blackness below it. Day by day the line will move lower down; the seeing area will get bigger, and the black area will get smaller until it is just a circle at the bottom of your vision, and then it disappears.. ...
