This text provides an illuminating and unique insight into the entoptic phenomena induced by the development of age related macular degeneration. Written primarily by a distinguished ophthalmic artist and photographer, it records his visual impressions of the development of age related macular degeneration in his own retinas during a 10 year period. His method of inducing and illustrating his entoptic phenomena is fascinating and the correlation with the clinical fundus findings of his attending ophthalmologists quite remarkable. The effect of laser photocoagulation is clearly described from a patients perspective.. This book is written in large print for the lay sufferer and ophthalmic professional alike. It is an easy read with plentiful illustrations and should occupy the bookshelf of all concerned with this potentially blinding disorder. Profits derived from the sale of this book will be used to support age related macular degeneration research.. ...
Wilhelm Von Haidinger discovered a quirky entoptic phenomenon in 1844. Like many other animals (insects, cephalopods) some humans can see the polarization of light. If you stare at the blue sky in the opposite direction from the sun, or at a white space on an LCD and notice some small blue and yellow artifacts, chances are you may have this extra perception. Anyone whos into photography or fishing will know that polarized lenses can help you for example, exclude reflection from the surface of water, allowing you to see what is happening underwater with greater clarity. Those 3D movies that are all the rage these days also use this property by giving you glasses with a different angle of polarization in each eye. It is thought that the underlying reason for this perception may be circular deposition of pigments in the macula. The pigment in question is lutein which is anisotropic and sensitive to the polarization of light. Lutein is also a strong anti-oxidant which gives the yellow colour to egg ...
Patients with visual snow suffer from pan-field, dynamic visual disturbance. Proposed diagnostic criteria require at least two additional visual symptoms from: palinopsia, entoptic phenomena, photophobia and nyctalopia. We characterised patients clinical symptoms with regard to the current criteria. An online survey was prepared in collaboration with the patient group Eye-on-Vision. Patients were directed to the site after they contacted us by email asking to be involved in research. The study was approved by the KCL Research Ethics Panel. Of patients (n=514) replying, 280 were male, with a mean cohort age of 29±10 years. They presented with black and white (n=287), coloured (n=222), flashing (n=227) and transparent (n=272) static, with an average of two types of static reported per patient. Floaters (n=446) were the most common associated symptom, followed by afterimages (n=428) and photophobia (n=405). The data confirm earlier work and extend the analysis of the overlapping symptoms. Visual ...

We report the fundus autofluorescence (FAF), spectral-domain optical coherence tomographic (SD-OCT), microperimetric, and multifocal electroretinographic (mfERG) findings before, during, and after successful treatment of a primary intraocular lymphoma (PIOL). A 57-year-old man had biopsy-proven PIOL in his left eye, and he was treated with intravitreal methotrexate injections for 8 months. Before treatment, fundus examination disclosed many small, yellow lesions with distinct boundaries in the posterior fundus which became atrophic 9 months after the initial treatment. FAF showed a pattern of granular hypoautofluorescence and hyperautofluorescence before the treatments and patchy hypoautofluorescence corresponding to retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) atrophy after the treatments. SD-OCT showed increased nodularity at the level of and above the RPE, a separation of Bruch membrane from the RPE, partial damage of the RPE, disruption of the photoreceptor inner segment/outer segment (IS/OS) junction, multiple
This book is a systematic introduction to a new and exciting field of patterns in granular matter. Granular materials are collections of discrete macroscopic solid grains with a typical size large enough that thermal fluctuations are negligible. Despite this seeming simplicity, properties of granular materials are different from conventional solids, liquids and gases due to the dissipative and highly nonlinear nature of forces among grains.

The retina is a highly metabolically active tissue with large demands on the supply of nutrients. Disorders affecting the retina often include some vasculopathy with an impact on retinal circulation. Studies of retinal haemodynamics could thus help to detect, differentiate and diagnose diseases, to monitor changes in disease as well as progression and efficiency of the therapy.. The present studies were an attempt to validate and determine the clinical usefulness of a newly developed technique for studying the retinal circulation in human eyes.. We used different techniques to evaluate different parameters of retinal circulation. We examined how leukocyte velocity determined with Blue Field Simulation and transit times, mean transite time (MTT) and arterio-venous passage (AVP), and vessel diameter, determined from fluorescein angiograms, together reflects the retinal circulation. MTT was determined with a method based on an Impulse-Response technique, MTTIR.. In a study on monkeys we compared ...

Beta amyloid (Aβ) deposits are seen in aged individuals in many of the mammalian species that possess the same Aβ amino acid sequence as humans. Conversely, neurofibrillary tangles (NFT), the other hallmark lesion of Alzheimers disease (AD), are extremely rare in these animals. We detected Aβ deposits in the brains of Tsushima leopard cats (Prionailurus bengalensis euptilurus) that live exclusively on Tsushima Island, Japan. Aβ42 was deposited in a granular pattern in the neuropil of the pyramidal cell layer, but did not form argyrophilic senile plaques. These Aβ deposits were not immunolabeled with antibodies to the N-terminal of human Aβ. Sequence analysis of the amyloid precursor protein revealed an amino acid substitution at the 7th residue of the Aβ peptide. In a comparison with other mammalian animals that do develop argyrophilic senile plaques, we concluded that the alternative Aβ amino acid sequence displayed by leopard cats is likely to be related to its distinctive deposition pattern.

A posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) is a common age-related condition in the eye. When we are young, the vitreous gel in the middle of the eye is firmly attached to the retina. As we age, the vitreous gel liquifies, and as it liquifies, it also contracts and pulls away from the retina. When the vitreous has detached from the retina, a posterior vitreous detachment is said to have occurred. Once the vitreous has pulled away, it poses no threat to the retina. However, while the vitreous detachment is occurring, it has potential to "tug too hard" on the retina and cause a retinal tear. Around 15% of the time, a PVD will cause a retinal tear. Therefore, patients having an acute PVD should undergo a dilated retinal exam.. When a PVD begins, a patient typically notices a large "cobweb" or "string-like" or "blob" floater in their vision. The patient may also complain of light flashes or a curtain-like shade over their vision. Patients experiencing these symptoms should contact their eye provider, and ...
As you get older the vitreous in your eye becomes more watery, less gel-like and isnt able to keep its usual shape. This causes it to move away from the retina at the back of the eye towards the centre of the eye.. Because these changes to the vitreous are natural over 75 per cent of people over 65 develop PVD. Its not a sign of disease or eye health problem and any symptoms usually get better with time. ...

A posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) is a condition of the eye in which the vitreous membrane separates from the retina. It refers to the separation of the posterior hyaloid membrane from the retina anywhere posterior to the vitreous base (a 3-4 mm wide attachment to the ora serrata). The condition is common for older adults; over 75% of those over the age of 65 develop it. Although less common among people in their 40s or 50s, the condition is not rare for those individuals. Some research has found that the condition is more common among women. When this occurs there is a characteristic pattern of symptoms: Flashes of light (photopsia) A sudden dramatic increase in the number of floaters A ring of floaters or hairs just to the temporal side of the central vision As a posterior vitreous detachment proceeds, adherent vitreous membrane may pull on the retina. While there are no pain fibers in the retina, vitreous traction may stimulate the retina, with resultant flashes that can look like a ...

The chicken retina is an established animal model for myopia and light-associated growth studies. It has a unique morphology: it is afoveate and avascular; oxygen and nutrition to the inner retina is delivered by a vascular tissue (pecten) that protrudes into the vitreous. Here we present, to the best of our knowledge, the first in vivo, volumetric high-resolution images of the chicken retina. Images were acquired with an ultrahigh-resolution optical coherence tomography (UHROCT) system with 3.5 µm axial resolution in the retina, at the rate of 47,000 A-scans/s. Spatial variations in the thickness of the nerve fiber and ganglion cell layers were mapped by segmenting and measuring the layer thickness with a semi-automatic segmentation algorithm. Volumetric visualization of the morphology and morphometric analysis of the chicken retina could aid significantly studies with chicken retinal models of ophthalmic diseases.. ©2011 Optical Society of America. Posterior Vitreous Detachments, or floaters, occur as a natural part of aging. They can also occur earlier in life if you are nearsighted or have blunt trauma to an eye or head. Initially the floater may appear as a black dot or tadpole in your vision. A dilated eye examination should be performed to check the entire retina to insure there is not a retinal hole or a retinal tear. Failure to diagnose a retinal tear and treat it early can lead to a retinal detachment and a bigger surgery.. Please visit our dedicated website on the possibility of treating floaters and Weiss Rings. ...
Floaters look like small specks, dots, circles, lines or cobwebs in the field of vision. They move as your eyes move and seem to dart away when you try to look at them directly. Floaters are tiny clumps of gel or cells inside the vitreous that fills eye. What you see are the shadows these clumps cast on the retina. They do not follow your eye movements accurately and normally drift when your eyes stop moving.. At a young age, the vitreous is transparent, As we age, our vitreous starts to thicken or shrink. The common type of floater, which is present in most persons eyes, is due to degenerative changes in the vitreous humour. If the vitreous pulls away from the back of the eye, then it is designated, posterior vitreous detachment. Floaters ordinarily occur with posterior vitreous detachment. They are not serious, and they tend to fade or go away over time. Severe floaters can be eliminated by surgery, but this is rarely necessary.. ...

Couch potato, thats me! My retina is still attached, thats the good news. But I am still seeing those darn floaters. Flashing lights have greatly reduced. I was reading more about the condition today and it can take months before all that activity settles down. Boo. I also read that most (not all) detached retinas follow PVD (Posterior Vitreous Detachment). However, if retina is in good shape at the time of a PVD there is only a 2-5% chance of a retinal detachment occurring. Thats pretty good news. Except that it could happen within days or weeks or months ...

Purpose: To evaluate relationships between acute onset posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) symptoms, stages of PVD, and retinal complications in a prospective bicenter trial.. Methods: Patients presenting with acute onset of PVD symptoms like "floaters" (group1), "flashes of light" (group 2), or "floaters and flashes of light" (group 3), who were examined at one of the two study centers [Rudolf Foundation Clinic, Vienna (center 1) and the Weill Cornell Medical College, New York City (center2)] were included in the study. The condition of the posterior hyaloid face was assessed using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). Co-factors analyzed included best-corrected distance and near visual acuity (BCVA), sex, age, status of the lens (phakic, pseudophakic), refractive status (emmetropic, hyperopic, myopic), previous cataract and refractive surgery, the presence of vitreous pigment, vitreous hemorrhage, lattice degeneration, retinal tears and/or retinal detachment, positive family ...
Floaters, also referred to as spots, are small, cloudy particles within the vitreous, the gel-like fluid that fills the inside of your eyes. They appear as small specs, clouds or thread-like strands in your field of vision and are frequently visible when you look at a bright, even background like white paper or blue sky. They usually move as your eyes move and dart away when you try to look directly at them.. What causes them?. Sometimes small flecks of protein or other matter become trapped in the vitreous as the eye is developing. They remain in the vitreous after birth, resulting in floaters in your line of sight.. Floaters can also be related to aging. As you get older, the vitreous may start to thicken or shrink, forming clumps or strands inside the eye. The vitreous then pulls away from the back wall of the eye in a condition called posterior vitreous detachment - a common cause of floaters.. The most worrisome cause for floaters is the result of certain eye disease or injuries. These must ...
