The Visible Human Project® is an outgrowth of the NLMs 1986 Long-Range Plan. It is the creation of complete, anatomically detailed, three-dimensional representations of the normal male human body. Cryosection images of representative male cadaver has been completed. The male was sectioned at one millimeter intervals,
The CT images used in the app come from nonpathological CT scans. At first we thought of using images from the [U.S. National Library of Medicine] Visible Human Project, and we acquired the relevant permission to do so. However, we soon realized that the Visible Human Project did not contain all parts of the human anatomy, and we wanted our images to have a consistency and continuity. So we decided to go with the option of using real patient scans. Obviously, we were very careful in obtaining copyright and ethical clearance from the patients and the hospital we worked with. Who is the target audience for CT Anatomy, and how do you envision it will be used?. Our primary target, of course, is medical professionals -- especially radiologists and radiologic technologists -- but anyone with an interest in cross-sectional anatomy can use and benefit from the CT Anatomy app. The volume of information in regards to the anatomical structures described and the ease of use in the app goes beyond the strict ...
Terry Yoo was awarded the Hubert H. Humphrey Award for Service to America by U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius at the June 5, 2014, HHS Departmental Awards Ceremony. Sebelius cited his leadership in open science through ITK [the Insight Toolkit] as the public software standard for 3-dimensional biomedical image analysis and for all the patients who have benefited. This is one of the highest awards given annually to select individuals within HHS who contribute to the common good and well-being of our nations citizens through leadership and service.. When NLM sponsored its Visible Human Project (VHP) in the 1990s, it was the most comprehensive study of human anatomy ever attempted. The analysis of its inordinately large data sets far exceeded the software and computing capabilities of the time. In response, Yoo proposed the creation of a public software resource for performing registration (image alignment) and segmentation (image partitioning) of ...
For most doctors, any mention of preclinical anatomy teaching evokes memories of the smell of formalin. Medical students in the future, however, are just as likely to use a computer as a scalpel to explore human anatomy, thanks to the Visible Human Project: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/research/visible/visible_human.html. This project, initiated by the US National Library of Medicine, aims to create complete, anatomically detailed, three dimensional representations of male and female human bodies. Transverse computed tomographic, magnetic resonance imaging, and cryosection images have already been collected at 1 mm intervals from a male and a female cadaver-sample images and animations are available on the projects web site ...
Dear Colleague, As you may know we are organising the Special Session SS5 on "The Virtual Physiological Human (VPH) project and Imaging in Biomechanics" as part of the 9th International Symposium on Computer Methods in Biomechanics and Biomedical Engineering (http://www.cmbbe2010.cf.ac.uk), to be held in Valencia on the 24th-27th February 2010. This session will focus on patient-specific modeling and simulation of various body systems functioning in the framework of the Virtual Physiological Human (VPH) calls of EU FP7 (http://vphop.eu/) and on image processing and analysis in biomechanics. Nowadays, multistage investigations aim at tackling time and length scales involved in the behaviour of biological and biomechanical systems (e.g., blood circulation, ventilation, digestion, renal purification, musculoskeletal apparatus, tumour growth, etc.) that sense, react, and adapt to environmental loadings, and in the study of that behavior from images. Topics include (but not limited to) enhanced bio ...
A method and apparatus for optimizing information-retrieval related system performance based on users communication relationships. Users interactions and relationships with each other are tracked by a relationship analyzer that queries multiple heterogeneous information sources, such as e-mail logs, organization charts, calendar entries, phone logs, etc. A data structure is created for each user reflecting the intensity of communication relationship with other users, and modified over time as the data in the information sources change. A relationship group is defined based on the data structure and preference or importance ratings for each type of communication relationship that includes each users group of highest-priority other users. A derived relationship group may also be defined based on high-priority users of a users highest-intensity relationships. The relationship analyzer then acts as a proxy for user queries, and may modify queries and create persistent data stores or store the results

Argues that there is a human vocation, a human project to be pursued by humanity as a whole. Physical cosmology tells us that the universe has a history, a history that arguably seems to be a preparation for intelligent life. As we seem to have been expected by the universe, there must be something we are expected to do. If there is a collective purpose for humanity, it must involve a better world, the

The widespread use of mouse models in developmental, behavioural and genetic studies has sparked wider interest in rodent biology as a whole. This book brings together the latest research on rodents to better understand the evolution of both living and extinct members of this fascinating group. Topics analysed include the role of molecular techniques in the determination of robust phylogenetic frameworks; how geometric morphometric methods help quantify and analyse variation in shape; and the role of developmental biology in elucidating the origins of skeletal elements and the teeth. The editors unite these disciplines to present the current state of knowledge in rodent biology, whilst setting the landscape for future research. This book highlights interdisciplinary links across palaeontology, developmental biology, functional morphology, phylogenetics and biomechanics, making it a valuable resource for evolutionary biologists in all fields. ...
Sabertooths exhibit one of the most extreme feeding adaptations seen in mammals. The functional consequences of accommodating extremely elongate upper canine teeth are severe, resulting in a well-documented suite of cranial modifications. We used geometric morphometric methods to study the evolution of overall shape in the skulls of extant and extinct feline and machairodontine felids, as well as extinct nimravids. Trends in skull evolution were evaluated by using relative warps analysis and tested for association with body size and canine tooth length. Primitive sabertooths from all lineages exhibit cranial shapes more similar to conical-toothed cats, despite the presence of moderately developed saberteeth. More-derived forms in both nimravids and felids diverge in skull morphospace to form two distinct sabertooth types (dirk-toothed and scimitar-toothed) that differ in canine shape. Skull shape in conical-toothed cats is strongly associated with body size, but not canine length. However, ...

In the Visible Korean project, serially sectioned images of the pelvis were made from a female cadaver. Outlines of significant structures in the sectioned images were drawn and stacked to build surface models. To improve the accessibility and informational content of these data, a five-step process was designed and implemented. First, 154 pelvic structures were outlined with additional surface reconstruction to prepare the image data. Second, the sectioned and outlined images (in a browsing software) as well as the surface models (in a PDF file) were placed on the Visible Korean homepage in a readily-accessible format. Third, all image data were visualized with interactive elements to stimulate creative learning. Fourth, two-dimensional (2D) images and three-dimensional (3D) models were superimposed on one another to provide context and spatial information for students viewing these data. Fifth, images were designed such that structure names would be shown when the mouse pointer hovered over ...
The objective of the current study was to provide a comprehensive characterization of human biomechanical response to whole-body, lateral impact. Three approximately 50th-percentile adult male PMHS were subjected to right-side pure lateral impacts at 4.3 ± 0.1 m/s using a rigid wall mounted to a rail-mounted sled. Each subject was positioned on a rigid seat and held stationary by a system of tethers until immediately prior to being impacted by the moving wall with 100 mm pelvic offset. Displacement data were obtained using an optoelectronic stereophotogrammetric system that was used to track the 3D motions of the impacting wall sled; seat sled, and reflective targets secured to the head, spine, extremities, ribcage, and shoulder complex of each subject. Kinematic data were also recorded using 3-axis accelerometer cubes secured to the head, pelvis, and spine at the levels of T1, T6, T11, and L3. Chest deformation in the transverse plane was recorded using a single chestband ...
The non-invasive quantitative estimation of regional cardiac deformation has important clinical implications for the assessment of viability in the heart wall. In this work we describe a general framework for estimating soft tissue deformation from sequences of three-dimensional medical images. We also explore some of their theoretical constraints which can be used to guide the selection of an appropriate model for the displacement field. We then apply this framework to the problem of estimating left ventricular deformations from sequences of 3D image sequences. The images are segmented interactively to extract the endocardial and epicardial surfaces. Then, initial frame-to-frame correspondences are established between points on the surfaces using a shape-tracking approach. The myocardium is modeled using a transversely isotropic linear elastic model, which accounts for the preferential stiffness of the left ventricular myocardium along its fiber directions. The measurements and the model are ...
Residual stress is the stress which remains in a deformable body in the absence of external forces. Due to the release of residual stress after cutting, soft tissues will shrink and the wound will open. Thus, to realistically simulate soft tissue deformations due to cutting, a model for the residual stress in a patient body is needed. In this paper we present an interactive method to compute a physically meaningful patient-specific residual stress distribution. With our method, by using their experience doctors can sketch directional stress strokes and specify stress magnitudes at a few control points on the body surface. The residual stress is then immediately computed from these inputs and visualized by displaying the deformations of a set of control cuts on the body. In a visually guided session, the user can further modify the initial strokes and magnitudes until a satisfactory result is obtained. We demonstrate the potential of the proposed method for virtual cut simulation by showing the ...
When the first images of the Visible Human male were presented, the regents of the NLM broke out in spontaneous applause, prompting a comment by project director Ackerman quoted by the Denver Post: It was sort of like applauding at the end of a movement in a concert. It was inappropriate, and the decorum is not that way. But it was a clear indication of how excited people are. Given the excitement generated by this biotechnological juggernaut, let us pose the following question: what is the relation between Joseph Jernigan, the housewife from Maryland, and the datasets they have become? In other words, what constitutes their cultural status (being) as shades? For a preliminary answer I take as data representations of the event in newsletters of the National Library of Medicine and approximately 55 articles from the popular media.. One way of thinking about the change in cultural status is most evident with Jernigan, whose fate was the more public. Here there is a sense of through the looking ...

The quantification of disparity is an important aspect of recent macroevolutionary studies, and it is usually motivated by theoretical considerations about the pace of innovation and the filling of morphospace. In practice, varying protocols of data collection and analysis have rendered comparisons among studies difficult. The basic question remains, How sensitive is any given disparity signal to different aspects of sampling and data analysis? Here we explore this issue in the context of the radiation of the echinoid order Spatangoida during the Cretaceous. We compare patterns at the genus and species levels, with time subdivision into subepochs and into stages, and with morphological sampling based on landmarks, traditional morphometrics, and discrete characters. In terms of temporal scale, similarity of disparity pattern accrues despite a change in temporal resolution, and a general deceleration in morphological diversification is apparent. Different morphometric methods also produce similar ...
The main challenge in CLEM workflows appears during the sample preparation and image acquisition step, when microscopists are transferring the sample from a physiological state to a cryo-sample for electron microscopy. Once this experimental challenge has been overcome, the next difficulty is finding a good solution to fuse the multi-channel time series data from the light microscope with the structural still image from the electron microscope. To support this image processing workflow, the software tools need to support handling of multiple volumes, registering these volumes, correlating measurements, and visualizing the multi-modal data in the same 3D space for image fusion.. With its long-standing applications in multi-modality imaging techniques, Amira Software is the tool of choice for many researchers working with data from different imaging modalities. Amira architecture supports multi-volume data processing and visualization from the ground up. The automatic registration tools integrated ...

The process of selecting a column for a particular analysis is quite complex and requires a good knowledge of HPLC method development. I recommend the book Practical HPLC Method Development by Lloyd Snyder, Joseph Kirkland and Joseph Glajch or, if you can, attend a good training course on HPLC method development such as those offered by MTS. As a general rule the type of column that you select will depend on the type of HPLC that you are using and the selection of the type of HPLC is based on the polarity and molecular weight of the molecule you wish to analyse. Types of HPLC include: partition, adsorption, size exclusion chromatography (SEC) and ion exchange chromatography (IC). Of these partition in the reversed phase (polar mobile phase) is the most commonly used. Acidic, basic and neutral molecules may be analysed using all these types of HPLC and so many columns can be used. Sorry that my answer cannot be more precise but the fact is that it is not just the acidic or basic nature of the ...

In the latter option, my approach would be to develop a master design concept for the entire property, then develop more detailed plans for the areas that are most important to you now. So if you know youll want an outdoor dining room for entertaining, well focus on that area and its related spaces first - but we wont lose sight of the bigger picture in the meantime, and can pick up where we left off when you have the budget to develop your second most important area. Whats more, this gives your contractor a sense of the ultimate plan for the landscape as well, which may allow them to help you realize some efficiencies in construction (e.g. placing conduit beneath hardscaping for future landscape lighting, or installing capped irrigation lines for future planting areas). Its been my experience that most contractors are also happy to discuss the potential costs and phasing of master concepts, and to offer ideas to make sure youll actually be able to afford those brilliant ideas ...

Because the result of ∂E/∂r = 0 in equation 21 approximates that of ∂C/∂r = 0 in equation 7 under the condition of UK ≪ ΔUP and Re becomes sufficiently low as shown in equation 36, x reaches 3.00, which Murrays (1926) law eventually advocates. Moreover, Uylings (1977) theory is another particular solution of ∂E/∂r = 0 under Re → ∞. E in equation 21 appears similar to equation 20 under the inverse condition of ΔUP ≪ UK, where Re rises sufficiently high as in equation 36, and x approaches 2.33, which is compatible with what Uylings model relates. The complete turbulence in equation 21 means that blood flow closely mimics the ideal fluid with Bernoullis principle.. However, our model does not explain the actual morphometric data of x , 2 or , 3 observed in some particular states of normal mammalian vasculatures (Woldenberg 1983; LaBarbera 1995; Dawson et al. 1999; Bennett et al. 2000). Furthermore, our theoretical results do not necessarily account for radius exponents ...

Dear Cecil:. Without gravity, how do female astronauts menstruate while in space?. - Gayle, Ventura, CA. Cecil replies:. For a while there, Gayle, the question wasnt how women would menstruate in space but whether it was too risky to find out.. Although the first female cosmonaut, Valentina Tereshkova, had flown in Vostok 6 in 1963, women were excluded from the U.S. space program during its early years. The official reason for this was that, as a matter of policy, U.S. astronauts were drawn from the ranks of military test pilots, and all the test pilots were men. If you ask me, though, the real reason was American male panic about women and their mysterious inner workings. Several plane crashes in the 1930s had involved menstruating female pilots, and experts - male experts, of course - suggested that putting a woman with "menstrual disturbances" in the cockpit was an invitation to disaster. Eventually the more hysterical fears receded, but some space medics still harbored serious concerns ...
The concept of man as microcosm is thought to originate with the ancient Babylonians. The Egyptians [image 1; image 2; image 3] and the Mayans [image] had analogues, and ancient Mithraic [image 1; image 2], Hebrew [image 1; image 2], Chinese, and Vedic traditions also contain similar concepts. Microcosmic ideas are fleshed out in the works of Plato (4th-c. BCE), but the first use of the term "microcosmos" in Western philosophy appears later, briefly, in Aristotles Physics.2 In the first century A.D. the Roman writer Manilius stated in his Astronomicon that man contained a world in himself, being created in the image of God.3 Numerous writers, including Firmicus (4th-c.) and Macrobius (5th-c.), to name a few, followed along the same lines. The first modern use of the terms macrocosmos and microcosmos, shortened to macrocosm/microcosm, was by Pico della Mirandola in his Heptaplus in 1490.4 ...
Pressure Ulcer (PU) prevention remains a main public health issue. The physio-pathology of this injury is not fully understood, and a satisfactory therapy is currently not available. Recently, several works suggested that mechanical strains are responsible of deformation-induced damage involved in the initiation of Deep Tissue Injury (DTI). A better assessment of the internal behavior could allow to enhance the modeling of the transmission of loads into the different structures composing the buttock. A few studies focused on the experimental in vivo buttock deformation quantification using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), but its use has important drawbacks. In clinical practice, ultrasound imaging is an accessible, low cost, and real-time technic to study the soft tissue. The objective of the present work was to show the feasibility of using B-mode ultrasound imaging for the quantification of localised soft-tissue strains of buttock tissues during sitting. An original protocol was designed, ...

0042]While the discussion above relates to the functional aspects and communication relationships established between the barrier operators 30A-C, the local transmitters 50A-C,60,62, and the various network devices 270 maintained by the communication network 70, it should be appreciated that certain configuration steps are initially required before the aforementioned components comprising the control system 10 are made fully operational so as to enable simultaneous control of each of the access barriers 40A-C. Thus, to enable the local transmitters 50A-C,60,62 and the network devices 270 to simultaneously open, close, and stop the movement of each of the access barriers 40A-C, a learn process is required to be initially invoked. This learn process takes place between a selected local transmitter 50A-C,60,62 or network device 270, and each barrier operator 30A-C of which simultaneous control is desired. Specifically, the operational steps for learning a desired local transmitter 50A-C,60,62 with ...
James Duncan, the Ebenezer K. Hunt Professor of Biomedical Engineering, has focused his research and teaching in the areas of biomedical image processing and analysis.. Duncan, who holds joint appointments in diagnostic radiology and electrical engineering, is the associate chair and director of undergraduate studies in the Department of Biomedical Engineering as well as the vice-chair for bioimaging sciences research in diagnostic radiology. He is particularly interested in the use of model-based mathematical strategies for the analysis of biomedical images. He helped pioneer the use of geometrical models for segmenting deformable (typically anatomical) objects of approximately known shape and for tracking certain forms of non-rigid object motion, and later soft tissue deformation, most notably that of the heart.. Professor; Internal Medicine; University of Texas Sw Med Ctr/Dallas Dallas, TX 753909105 Timing: Fiscal Year 2001; Project Start 16-AUG-1999; Project End 30-JUN-2003 Summary: Our previous studies have shown by physiologic and morphometric methods that new alveolar and acinar airway growth occurs in the remaining lung after pneumonectomy (PNX) in adult dogs. Regenerative lung growth did not occur after left PNX (45% resection); physiologic compensation was by recruitment of existing capillary reserves functionally significant growth occurred after right PNX (55% resection) but was incomplete, so that abnormalities in exercise capacity, gas exchange and mechanical function persisted. For this purpose, the PET/CT scanner is equipped with collimated cesium point sources operating in singles mode. Further improvement in SNR can also be achieved by implementing continuous bed motion acquisition for the PET emission scan. Such an approach obviates the need to acquire overlapping bed positions that lead ...

While numerous studies have been conducted to determine side impact responses of Post Mortem Human Surrogates (PMHS) using sled and other equipment, experiments using the biological surrogate in modern full-scale vehicles are not available. The present study investigated the presence of oblique loading in moving deformable barrier and pole tests. Three-point belt restrained PMHS were positioned in the left front and left rear seats in the former and left front seat in the latter condition and tested according to consumer testing protocols. Three chestbands were used in each specimen (upper, middle and lower thorax). Accelerometers were secured to the skull, shoulder, upper, middle and lower thoracic vertebrae, sternum, and sacrum. Chestband signals were processed to determine magnitudes and angulations of peak deflections. The magnitude and timing of various signal peaks are given. Vehicle accelerations, door velocities, and seat belt loads are also given. Analysis of deformation contours, peak ...

A reliable knowledge of the thickness of the alveolo-capillary "membrane" or air-blood barrier is of physiologic interest since it is intimately related to a quantitative estimation of such functional events as gas diffusion or tissue metabolism in the lung. The characteristic thickness of the air-blood barrier with respect to gas diffusion is its harmonic mean thickness, while the arithmetic mean thickness is related to the mass of tissue building the barrier and consuming oxygen in the lung. Two morphometric methods are proposed by which these two dimensions can be estimated from random measurements in the electron microscope in a reliable, simple, and efficient manner. By applying these methods to three rat lungs the arithmetic mean thickness of the barrier was found to measure 1.25 µ, the harmonic mean thickness, 0.57 µ. On the basis of these measurements a geometric model of the barrier in the form of a corrugated membrane was derived. Its dimensions showed close similarity to those of ...
The aging in men is accompanied by an increase in the presence of connective tissue in all the organs and tissues, and with increase of corticotrophs and folliculostellate cells in adenohypophysis, which can affect the function of the HPA axis in healthy elderly individuals. Objective of the research was to perform quantification of structural changes during aging (cellularity, presence of the connective tissue and blood flow), collagen type IV, corticotrophs and folliculostellate cells on the pituitary tissue, obtained at autopsy, using histochemical, immunohistochemical and morphometric methods. Histochemical part of the research showed an increase of the cell size that occured during normal aging in the adenohypophysis. The analyzed cells of the adenohypophysis were significantly larger and, at the same time, they were characterized by a substantially more regular shape in female in comparison to the male patients cases. Differences in the cellular composition of the pituitary ...
