P2X2 Receptor Expression Differs in Primates and Rodents. Alexandre Serrano, Gary Mo, Rebecca Grant, Michel Paré, Dajan ODonnell, et al.. (see pages 11890-11896). ATP released by distension of the bladder, gut, and other visceral tissues activates homomeric P2X3 and heteromeric P2X2/3 receptors on mechanosensory and nociceptive neurons. ATP is also released in the spinal cord, where it acts on glia and neurons involved in pain pathways. All this is true in rodents, at least; Serrano et al. now suggest that primates are somewhat different. Although expression of P2X3 was similar in dorsal root ganglion (DRG) of rats, monkeys, and humans, the P2X2 subunit was expressed at very low levels in primates. Furthermore, monkey DRG neurons did not exhibit slowly desensitizing responses-characteristic of P2X2/3 currents-to agonist in vitro. More importantly, the potency of P2X2 and P2X2/3 antagonists was greatly reduced in monkey DRG neurons, as well as in HEK cells expressing human P2X3. These results ...
In the United States and the United Kingdom, it is estimated that 16 to 40% of people are infected with T. gondii, whereas in Central and South America and continental Europe, estimates of infection range from 50 to 80%. Most infections in humans are asymptomatic, but at times the parasite can produce devastating disease. Infection may be congenitally or postnatally acquired. Congenital infection occurs only when a woman becomes infected during pregnancy. Congenital infections acquired during the first trimester are more severe than those acquired in the second and third trimester. While the mother rarely has symptoms of infection, she does have a temporary parasitemia. Focal lesions develop in the placenta and the fetus may become infected. At first there is generalized infection in the fetus. Later, infection is cleared from the visceral tissues and may localize in the central nervous system. A wide spectrum of clinical diseases occur in congenitally infected children. Mild disease may consist ...

A 12-month study (January to December 2015) focused on the effects of tidal forcing on nutrient fluxes in the tidal, freshwater segment of the James River Estuary (JRE). Discrete sampling of nutrient chemistry and continuous monitoring of tidal discharge were used to determine the volume and timing of the tides, and differences in nutrient concentrations between incoming and outgoing tides. The goal of this study was to improve understanding of tidal influence on nutrient fluxes and their role in nutrient transport to the lower estuary. Results suggested that differences in nutrient concentrations between incoming and outgoing tides were small throughout the year. This finding suggests that nutrient fluxes at the study site, near the tidal fresh-oligohaline boundary of the James, are largely determined by tidal volume owing to weak concentrations gradients. Changes in water quality during seaward and landward tidal excursions into deeper versus shallower segments were analyzed to infer biogeochemical

Visceral Manipulation was developed by world-renowned French Osteopath & Physical Therapist, Jean-Pierre Barral. At optimal health, the relationship between the organs (viscera) and structures of the body (muscles, membranes, fasciae and bones) remains stable despite the bodys endless range of movements. But when one organ cant move in synchronization with its neighbouring viscera due to abnormal tone, adhesions or displacement, it works in opposition to all the bodys organs and structures. This discord creates fixed, abnormal points of tension that the body is forced to navigate which, in turn, paves the way for disease and dysfunction.. Visceral Manipulation is a gentle hands-on therapy that works through the bodys visceral system (the heart, liver, intestines and other internal organs) to identify and improve these irregularities throughout the body. It utilizes specifically placed manual forces that endeavour to promote the normal mobility, tone and motion of the viscera and their ...

Abstract. Traumatic injury of the spinal cord affects the entire organism directly and indirectly. Primary injury destroys neurons and severs axons which participate in neural circuits. Secondary injuries and pathologies arise from numerous sources including systemic inflammation, consequential damage of cutaneous, muscular, and visceral tissues, and dysregulation of autonomic, endocrine and sensory- motor functions. Evidence is mounting that spinal cord injury (SCI) affects regions of the nervous system spatially remote from the injury site, as well as peripheral tissues, and alters some basic characteristics of primary afferent cell biology and physiology (cell number, size/frequency, electrophysiology, other). The degree of afferent input and processing above the lesion is generally intact, while that in the peri-lesion area is highly variable, though pathologies emerge in both regions, including a variety of pain syndromes. Primary afferent input to spinal regions below the injury and the ...
Based on deep feeling and emotional reactions rather than on reason or thought. Visceral hypersensitivity is a term used to describe an increase in pain sensation which is more than the normal within the internal organs. Referring to the viscera the internal organs of the body specifically those within the chest as the heart or lungs or abdomen as the liver pancreas or intestines. But strong emotions do affect body systems and where we feel it most is the gut viscera. Something visceral has to do with the viscera. Visceral hypersensitivity visceral hyperalgesia is the term used to describe the experience of pain within the inner organs viscera at a level that is more intense than normal. Unlike belly fat visceral fat is metabolically active says endocrinologist Reshmi Srinath director of the Weight and Metabolism Management Program at Mount Sinai Hospital. Even though its estimated that 40 percent of the population experiences visceral pain at some time or another a lot less is known about it ...
Splanchnology is the study of the visceral organs, i.e. digestive, urinary, reproductive and respiratory systems. The term derives from the Neo-Latin splancho-, from the Greek σπλάγχνα, meaning viscera. More broadly, splanchnology includes all the components of the Neuro-Endo-Immune (NEI) Supersystem. An organ (or viscus) is a collection of tissues joined in a structural unit to serve a common function. In anatomy, a viscus is an internal organ, and viscera is the plural form. Organs consist of different tissues, one or more of which prevail and determine its specific structure and function. Functionally related organs often cooperate to form whole organ systems. Viscera are the soft organs of the body. There are organs and systems of organs that differ in structure and development but they are united for the performance of a common function. Such functional collection of mixed organs, form an organ system. These organs are always made up of special cells that support its specific ...

His recognized that the heart and other organs which lie far forward on the ventral side of the embryo at a very early period are at first pushed backward (eaudad) by the ventral flexure of the body axis in the head region. Up to the third week in the human embryo, while the body axis remains comparatively straight, the heart lies chiefly ventral to the head region. During the third and fourth weeks, owing to the flexures in the head region, - the primary cephalic flexure opposite the midbrain, and the cervical flexure at the junction of the head and neck - the heart and adjacent organs are pushed backward farther and farther. In the fifth week (Fig. 1), at the close of the period of greatest flexure of the body axis, the heart lies entirely opposite the cervical region of the vertebral column. It is difiicult to determine with certainty the exact vertebral level of the various organs at this period, on account of the extreme flexure of the body. The cause of this flexure ventralward of the body ...

The observations proved that the adhesive lays well on tissues and forms a polymer film. The film stops local bleeding and joins the slit parts hermetically. The zone of mortifing tissue, which always occurs in the area of the wound, was small and well-defined. Sulfacrylate contributed to formation of this zone, however its local toxic effect was over soon. In a month the wound closed up completely and the adhesive dissolved. Inflammation inevitably accompanies cicatrization, but the adhesive allowed to avoid festering. The animals from the background group had tissues injured not only during the operation, but also during suture, therefore the necrotic zone and local hemorrhages were much more extensive than in case of utilizing the adhesive, and cicatrization went through a stage of suppurative inflammation with microabscesses ...

Visceral adipose tissue is harmful to metabolic health. Exercise training reduces visceral adipose tissue mass, but the underlying mechanisms are not known. Interleukin-6 (IL-6) stimulates lipolysis and is released from skeletal muscle during exercise. We hypothesized that exercise-induced reductions in visceral adipose tissue mass are mediated by IL-6. In this randomized placebo-controlled trial, we assigned abdominally obese adults to tocilizumab (IL-6 receptor antibody) or placebo during a 12-week intervention with either bicycle exercise or no exercise. While exercise reduced visceral adipose tissue mass, this effect of exercise was abolished in the presence of IL-6 blockade. Changes in body weight and total adipose tissue mass showed similar tendencies, whereas lean body mass did not differ between groups. Also, IL-6 blockade increased cholesterol levels, an effect not reversed by exercise. Thus, IL-6 is required for exercise to reduce visceral adipose tissue mass and emphasizes a ...

There are two pancreatic organs, an upper and a lower. The upper pancreas lies obliquely across the vertebral column passing from above downwards and to the left in the epigastric region. Its upper end is on the right side of the body of the 10th thoracic vertebra and its lower end is on the left side of the body of the 11th thoracic vertebra, where it lies in apposition with the head of the lower pancreas. Title: Metabolic Obesity: The Paradox Between Visceral and Subcutaneous Fat. VOLUME: 2 ISSUE: 4. Author(s):. Keywords:Cardiovascular Disease, Abdominal Obesity, anthropometric measurement, Abdominal ultrasonography, Peripheral Fat. Abstract: In contrast to the accumulation of fat in the gluteo-femoral region, the accumulation of fat around abdominal viscera and inside intraabdominal solid organs is strongly associated with obesity-related complications like Type 2 diabetes and coronary artery disease. The association between visceral adiposity and accelerated atherosclerosis was shown to be independent of age, overall obesity or the amount of subcutaneous fat. Recent evidence revealed several biological and genetic differences between intraabdominal visceral-fat and peripheral subcutaneous-fat. Such differences are also reflected in their contrasting roles in the pathogenesis of obesity-related cardiometabolic problems, in either lean or obese individuals. The functional differences between ...

After implantation, the embryonic portion of a mouse embryo consists of two monolayer sheets, the epiblast and the visceral endoderm, in a cup-shape structure. The embryos are radially symmetric, with the distal-proximal axis. Cell thickening occurs in the distal visceral endoderm (DVE) at E5.5. The DVE cells express a unique set of genes (AVE genes) encoding transcriptional factors such as Otx2 and Hhex, and signaling antagonists such as Dkk1, Cerl and Lefty1. The expression of AVE genes shifts to the anterior visceral endoderm (AVE) by E6.0, and then the anterior-posterior axis is formed. The shift of the AVE gene expression from DVE to AVE is not due to a change in the cells that express these genes, but due to the movement of the DVE cells. However, it is only DVE cells or part of the visceral endoderm cells that have been analyzed in previous studies. It has remained unclear how other visceral endoderm cells respond to or influence DVE cell movement. Here we have analyzed the behavior of ...
