Richmond, Virginia -To mark its 25th anniversary, the Virginia Health Care Foundation (VHCF) will announce a new $1.5 million behavioral health initiative designed to increase access to mental health services for medically underserved and uninsured Virginians on Monday, May 22.. Both data and experience document the critical need for mental health services throughout Virginia, said Ralph Howell, the Chairman of VHCFs Board of Trustees. Recent Community Health Needs Assessments conducted by Virginia hospitals and some health departments identified access to behavioral health services as a top critical service gap. Increasing access to and/or improving behavioral health services was a priority strategy to address the gap.. These findings are affirmed by the experience of Virginias free and charitable clinics, community health centers, and other similar organizations which deliver health care to the uninsured and medically underserved. The United States District Court for the District of Virginia was one of the original 13 courts established by the Judiciary Act of 1789, 1 Stat. 73, on September 24, 1789.[1][2] On February 13, 1801, the Judiciary Act of 1801, 2 Stat. 89, divided Virginia into three judicial districts: the District of Virginia, which included the counties west of the Tidewater and south of the Rappahannock River; the District of Norfolk, which included the Tidewater counties south of the Rappahannock; and the District of Potomac, which included the counties north and east of the Rappahannock as well as Maryland counties along the Potomac.[2] Just over a year later, on March 8, 1802, the Judiciary Act of 1801 was repealed and Virginia became a single District again, 2 Stat. 132, effective July 1, 1802.[2] The District of Virginia was subdivided into Eastern and Western Districts on February 4, 1819, by 3 Stat. 478.[1][2] At that time, West Virginia, was still part of Virginia, and was encompassed in Virginias ...
Skin bacteria could be the best defense that frogs and salamanders have for protection against dangerous diseases like chytrid fungus.. By culturing and sequencing the DNA of naturally occurring bacteria living on the skin of four amphibian species in Virginia, Virginia Tech researchers found samples that could be useful for developing probiotic treatments for amphibians.. There is a lot of interest in using these beneficial bacteria as probiotics to protect amphibians from disease, said Jeni Walke, a postdoctoral researcher at Virginia Tech. As with many applications of microbiology, using probiotics requires having bacteria that can be grown in the laboratory and then, in this case, applied to amphibians.. Specifically, Walke and her team found distinct microbial communities across amphibian species with many of the dominant bacteria represented by cultures, some of which are known to contribute to disease resistance in hosts. Some species of skin bacteria produce antifungals, which, with ...

LA JOLLA, CA - Repeatedly boosting brain levels of one natural painkiller soon shuts down the brain cell receptors that respond to it, so that the painkilling effect is lost, according to a surprising new study led by Scripps Research Institute and Virginia Commonwealth University scientists. The study has important implications for drug development.. The natural painkiller, 2-AG, is one of the two major endocannabinoid neurotransmitters. The other, anandamide, can be kept at high levels in the brain without losing its therapeutic effects, and researchers had hoped that the same would be true for 2-AG.. One implication is that maximally elevating 2-AG levels in the brain might not provide a straightforward path to new pain drugs, says Benjamin F. Cravatt III, PhD, professor and chair of the Department of Chemical Physiology and member of the Skaggs Institute for Chemical Biology at Scripps Research in La Jolla, California, who led the study with Aron Lichtman, PhD, a professor of ...

Impact in Commonwealth to Begin Saturday Night, Possibly Continue Through Wednesday; Storm Will be Followed by Colder Temperatures. RICHMOND - Governor Bob McDonnell has declared a state of emergency in Virginia in preparation for Hurricane Sandy, which is anticipated to affect the Commonwealth over the weekend and early next week. There is some uncertainty with the storms final track, but all forecasts call for significant impacts to Virginia. Sandy will be transitioning to an extratropical storm as it reaches Virginia, leading to a broader wind field with a wider reach across the Commonwealth. In addition, current models predict a slower storm and therefore a longer duration event than usual.. Based on current forecasts, the eastern third of Virginia could experience tropical storm force winds for more than 48 hours, several inches of rain and coastal flooding. Even inland areas of Virginia could see strong winds and significant rainfall. There is a strong possibility of extensive power ...
Abstract BIOCHEMICAL ACTIONS OF A NOVEL CIS-TERPENONE By Lin Zhang, Ph.D. A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at Virginia Commonwealth University. Virginia Commonwealth University, 2012 Director: Qibing Zhou, Ph.D Assistant Professor Department of Chemistry Quinone methides are reactive species due to their electrophilicity, and natural quinone methide analogs have broad biological activities. Based on known actions of cytochrome P450 enzymes, we hypothesized that trans-terpenones can be metabolized in cells to form a cascade of metabolite products, which may be biologically active due to the generation of quinine and quinone methide reactive intermediates. Therefore, 3-hydroxy-cis-terpenone (HCT) and analogs were designed and synthesized in our lab to investigate this hypothesis. As a first step in testing this hypothesis, we examined effects of cis-terpenones on the viability of HepG2 cells exposed to aflatoxin B1 (AFB1). Cis
An annotated corpus with nanomedicine and pharmacokinetic parameters Nastassja A Lewinski,1 Ivan Jimenez,1 Bridget T McInnes2 1Department of Chemical and Life Science Engineering, Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, VA, 2Department of Computer Science, Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, VA, USA Abstract: A vast amount of data on nanomedicines is being generated and published, and natural language processing (NLP) approaches can automate the extraction of unstructured text-based data. Annotated corpora are a key resource for NLP and information extraction methods which employ machine learning. Although corpora are available for pharmaceuticals, resources for nanomedicines and nanotechnology are still limited. To foster nanotechnology text mining (NanoNLP) efforts, we have constructed a corpus of annotated drug product inserts taken from the US Food and Drug Administration’s [email protected] online database. In this work, we present the development of the Engineered Nanomedicine Database

In 1788 Virginias 3rd Congressional District consisted of all of modern Virginia including and west of the counties of Carroll, Floyd, Roanoke, Botetourt, Augusta and Rockingham. It also included what is today Pendleton County, West Virginia and also about the southern third of West Virginia which in 1788 was all Greenbrier County. This area that is today about 48 counties and 13 independent cities was in 1788 only nine counties.[14]. In the 1790 census this area had a population of 66,045.[15]. For the 1792 congressional elections the number of congressional districts in Virginia rose from 10 to 19. The only county that remained in the third district was Pendleton County. Harrison, Randolph, Hardy, Hampshire, Monongalia and Ohio Counties, all now in West Virginia were also in the district.[16] This was all of northern West Virginia except the far eastern panhandle area. Priscilla Hwang, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at VCU College of Engineering, is using a 3D tumor-on-a-chip model to investigate how cells in breast cancer progress.. Hwang has received an American Cancer Society Institutional Research Grant through the VCU Massey Cancer Center for her research.. Hwangs interest in cancer research led her to develop models that mimic how cells in the body behave in a more realistic way than 2D models. Her lab creates miniature 3D microphysiological systems, about the size of a quarter. These microtissues allow us to mimic different tissues in the body but on the lab bench, she said.. Her project, Cadherin-3 regulated leader cell driven collective migration, uses a tumor-on-a-chip model that mimics the breast tissue during cancer. We incorporate primary tumor cells into our tissue model, and because our model is optically clear, we can use microscopy techniques to watch real-time cancer progression, she ...

A year ago in Lubbock, Texas, West Virginia raced to a 24-7 halftime lead and forced Texas Tech to throw the ball to try to catch up. A difference in this game could be the red zone, where Texas Techs offense has surprisingly struggled, scoring on only 76 percent of their trips inside the 20, which is second worst in the Big 12 conference.. The amount of times that they are handing that thing off is more than what they have been doing, said West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen.. Underwhelming at home against Big 12: West Virginia has the talent to give teams headaches, but they arent as good as home as one might think. Texas Tech remains one of the nations best offenses but seems to be getting a bit more credit that it deserves defensively after a small subset of games.. Today we look at the tale of the tape of the positions for both West Virginia and Texas Tech to see which team in our analysis comes out on top pitted against each other. West Virginia is ninth at about 44 points and has ...

Did the Republican victories in Virginia and New Jersey reflect voter discontent with President Obamas performance-discontent that could produce Republican gains in 2010 if it persists or intensifies? Both states voted for Barack Obama in last years presidential election-Virginia by a margin of 6 points and New Jersey by a margin of 15 points. This year, however, turnout was way down, as it always is in off-year elections. The number of votes cast fell from 3.7 million to less than 2 million in Virginia and from 3.9 million to 2.3 million in New Jersey. And the evidence from exit polls in both states shows that the Republican base was more energized this year than the Democratic base. This year, 18-29 year-old voters, who played a key role in Obamas victory in 2008, made up only 10 percent of the electorate in Virginia and only 9 percent of the electorate in New Jersey compared with 21 percent and 17 percent respectively in 2008. In Virginia, African-Americans and other nonwhites made up only ...

In a recent study funded by the National Institutes of Health, West Virginia University researchers Gordon Smith, Marie Abate and Zheng Dai found that fentanyl-related deaths are on the rise in West Virginia, even as deaths related to prescription opioids decline.. By analyzing all drug-related deaths in the state from 2005 to 2017, the research team-which included medical examiners from the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources-discovered that between 2015 and 2017, deaths from fentanyl were 122 percent of what they were between 2005 and 2014.. In contrast, prescription opioids played a role in 75 percent fewer deaths between 2015 and 2017 than over the previous 10 years.. Why did fentanyl-related deaths skyrocket in 2015? One factor was a surge in illegal fentanyl imports from China. Up until then, people who were shifting from legal prescription drugs to illegal drugs were shifting to heroin and opioids coming in from Mexico and other places. But then people started ...
