Richmond, Virginia -To mark its 25th anniversary, the Virginia Health Care Foundation (VHCF) will announce a new $1.5 million behavioral health initiative designed to increase access to mental health services for medically underserved and uninsured Virginians on Monday, May 22.. "Both data and experience document the critical need for mental health services throughout Virginia," said Ralph Howell, the Chairman of VHCFs Board of Trustees. "Recent Community Health Needs Assessments conducted by Virginia hospitals and some health departments identified access to behavioral health services as a top critical service gap. Increasing access to and/or improving behavioral health services was a priority strategy to address the gap.. These findings are affirmed by the experience of Virginias free and charitable clinics, community health centers, and other similar organizations which deliver health care to the uninsured and medically underserved. Behavioral health is one of the top three conditions with ...

Sixteen Virginia Tech faculty members were awarded resources to advance team research projects this summer, as part of Virginia Techs Institute for Society, Culture and Environments Summer Scholars Program. Teams of faculty members received between $15,000 and $30,000 to tackle interdisciplinary topics-based projects, with the expectation that their efforts will lead to a major externally funded research grant. Of that group, one team received a summer scholars in-residence award, which means they received funding to spend focused time together as they refine their proposal ideas.. The intent of the summer scholars in-residence program is for faculty to spend a significant amount of concentrated time together, without the interruptions of classes, professional travel, and vacations, said Karen Roberto, director of the Institute for Society, Culture and Environment, one of Virginia Techs seven research institutes. As a group, they generate and discuss ideas, work through the methodology, ...

The United States District Court for the District of Virginia was one of the original 13 courts established by the Judiciary Act of 1789, 1 Stat. 73, on September 24, 1789.[1][2] On February 13, 1801, the Judiciary Act of 1801, 2 Stat. 89, divided Virginia into three judicial districts: the District of Virginia, which included the counties west of the Tidewater and south of the Rappahannock River; the District of Norfolk, which included the Tidewater counties south of the Rappahannock; and the District of Potomac, which included the counties north and east of the Rappahannock as well as Maryland counties along the Potomac.[2] Just over a year later, on March 8, 1802, the Judiciary Act of 1801 was repealed and Virginia became a single District again, 2 Stat. 132, effective July 1, 1802.[2] The District of Virginia was subdivided into Eastern and Western Districts on February 4, 1819, by 3 Stat. 478.[1][2] At that time, West Virginia, was still part of Virginia, and was encompassed in Virginias ...
Skin bacteria could be the best defense that frogs and salamanders have for protection against dangerous diseases like chytrid fungus.. By culturing and sequencing the DNA of naturally occurring bacteria living on the skin of four amphibian species in Virginia, Virginia Tech researchers found samples that could be useful for developing probiotic treatments for amphibians.. "There is a lot of interest in using these beneficial bacteria as probiotics to protect amphibians from disease," said Jeni Walke, a postdoctoral researcher at Virginia Tech. "As with many applications of microbiology, using probiotics requires having bacteria that can be grown in the laboratory and then, in this case, applied to amphibians.". Specifically, Walke and her team found distinct microbial communities across amphibian species with many of the dominant bacteria represented by cultures, some of which are known to contribute to disease resistance in hosts. Some species of skin bacteria produce antifungals, which, with ...

LA JOLLA, CA - Repeatedly boosting brain levels of one natural painkiller soon shuts down the brain cell receptors that respond to it, so that the painkilling effect is lost, according to a surprising new study led by Scripps Research Institute and Virginia Commonwealth University scientists. The study has important implications for drug development.. The natural painkiller, 2-AG, is one of the two major "endocannabinoid" neurotransmitters. The other, anandamide, can be kept at high levels in the brain without losing its therapeutic effects, and researchers had hoped that the same would be true for 2-AG.. "One implication is that maximally elevating 2-AG levels in the brain might not provide a straightforward path to new pain drugs," says Benjamin F. Cravatt III, PhD, professor and chair of the Department of Chemical Physiology and member of the Skaggs Institute for Chemical Biology at Scripps Research in La Jolla, California, who led the study with Aron Lichtman, PhD, a professor of ...

Impact in Commonwealth to Begin Saturday Night, Possibly Continue Through Wednesday; Storm Will be Followed by Colder Temperatures. RICHMOND - Governor Bob McDonnell has declared a state of emergency in Virginia in preparation for Hurricane Sandy, which is anticipated to affect the Commonwealth over the weekend and early next week. There is some uncertainty with the storms final track, but all forecasts call for significant impacts to Virginia. Sandy will be transitioning to an extratropical storm as it reaches Virginia, leading to a broader wind field with a wider reach across the Commonwealth. In addition, current models predict a slower storm and therefore a longer duration event than usual.. Based on current forecasts, the eastern third of Virginia could experience tropical storm force winds for more than 48 hours, several inches of rain and coastal flooding. Even inland areas of Virginia could see strong winds and significant rainfall. There is a strong possibility of extensive power ...
Abstract BIOCHEMICAL ACTIONS OF A NOVEL CIS-TERPENONE By Lin Zhang, Ph.D. A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at Virginia Commonwealth University. Virginia Commonwealth University, 2012 Director: Qibing Zhou, Ph.D Assistant Professor Department of Chemistry Quinone methides are reactive species due to their electrophilicity, and natural quinone methide analogs have broad biological activities. Based on known actions of cytochrome P450 enzymes, we hypothesized that trans-terpenones can be metabolized in cells to form a cascade of metabolite products, which may be biologically active due to the generation of quinine and quinone methide reactive intermediates. Therefore, 3-hydroxy-cis-terpenone (HCT) and analogs were designed and synthesized in our lab to investigate this hypothesis. As a first step in testing this hypothesis, we examined effects of cis-terpenones on the viability of HepG2 cells exposed to aflatoxin B1 (AFB1). Cis
An annotated corpus with nanomedicine and pharmacokinetic parameters Nastassja A Lewinski,1 Ivan Jimenez,1 Bridget T McInnes2 1Department of Chemical and Life Science Engineering, Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, VA, 2Department of Computer Science, Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, VA, USA Abstract: A vast amount of data on nanomedicines is being generated and published, and natural language processing (NLP) approaches can automate the extraction of unstructured text-based data. Annotated corpora are a key resource for NLP and information extraction methods which employ machine learning. Although corpora are available for pharmaceuticals, resources for nanomedicines and nanotechnology are still limited. To foster nanotechnology text mining (NanoNLP) efforts, we have constructed a corpus of annotated drug product inserts taken from the US Food and Drug Administration’s [email protected] online database. In this work, we present the development of the Engineered Nanomedicine Database

Although Northern Virginia rebounded quickly after the recession and regained the jobs it lost, "right now theyre dead in the water," Chmura says. "Employment is not growing, and thats whats driving Virginias economy to be so weak." In September (the last available statistic), employment in Virginia had grown by three-tenths of a percentage point since September 2013. The national job-growth rate, however, increased by 1.9 percent during the same time period. BirchGrove Consulting, a Potomac, Md.-market research firm, predicts the commonwealth stands to lose approximately $13.5 billion of its defense funding from fiscal year 2013 to FY2018. Northern Virginia and Hampton Roads will be the hardest hit by sequestration. They stand to lose 35 percent and 23 percent of their defense funds, respectively. Virginia has not been guaranteed a certain amount of defense dollars, but "it is fair to say, all-things-equal, the commonwealth is facing reductions of that magnitude in the future years," ...

Principal Investigator: April D. Kimmel, Ph.D.. Funding Source: National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities. Project Summary:. While clinical care for HIV has made tremendous advances, the majority of persons living with HIV in the US do not receive the evidence-based care that will allow them to fully extend life and improve health. Lack of effective HIV care is particularly problematic in the Southern region, the epicenter of the US HIV epidemic and where poverty, uninsurance, rurality, and a constrained health workforce further threaten effective care. Research suggests that system-level factors, or the structural and policy-related aspects of health care delivery, have the potential to improve quality of care and health outcomes. But little is known about their role in the context of HIV care delivery, quality of care, and health outcomes. The proposed research will study how two modifiable system-level factors-geographic accessibility to care and physician payment ...
There is an urgent need for innovative approaches to obesity prevention and treatment, particularly among African Americans (AA), a population at increased risk of obesity and its associated morbidity and mortality. Research and clinical practice guidelines consistently recommend that parents should be included in their childrens obesity treatment, yet the most effective strategy to engage parents in adolescent obesity treatment is unclear. The adolescent period presents substantial challenges to family-based care, as youth experience increased desire for independence and autonomy, contributing to resistance to authority figures; yet they still rely on parents for many needs. Given these challenges, it is not surprising that research investigating specific clinical paradigms for involving parents in adolescent obesity treatments is inconsistent. To that end, the current application pilots two distinct approaches for involving parents in their adolescents obesity treatment. TEENS (Teaching, ...
Barker, S.B., Barker, R.T., McCain, N.L, and Schubert, C.M. (2016). A randomized crossover exploratory study of the effect of visiting therapy dogs on college student stress before final exams. Anthrozoos, 29 (1), 35-46.. This exploratory study investigated the effect of visiting therapy dogs on college student perceived and physiological stress the week prior to final exams. Students (n=78) were randomly assigned to order of a therapy dog intervention and attention-control condition, each 15 minutes long. Students completed the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), a stress visual analog scale (SVAS), and provided saliva for measuring nerve growth factor (sNGF) and alpha amylase (sAA) prior to randomization. Saliva samples and SVAS were again collected after each condition. There was no effect of group order on demographics, PSS, or initial SVAS. Repeated measures models were used to analyze the complete data sets of 57 students. There were no significant differences in sAA between or within students ...

(Virginia Commonwealth University) Researchers from Virginia Commonwealth University Massey Cancer Center have discovered a new signaling pathway in sterile inflammation that could impact the treatment of diseases such as cancer, multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis. Their findings offer insight into the role that activation of interferon-regulatory factor 1, a protein that functions as a transcriptional activator of a variety of target genes, plays in the production of chemokines and the recruitment of mononuclear cells to sites of sterile inflammation. We describe a new type of collective behavior in C. elegans nematodes, aggregation of starved L1 larvae. Shortly after hatching in the absence of food, L1 larvae arrest their development and disperse in search for food. In contrast, after two or more days without food, the worms change their behavior-they start to aggregate. The aggregation requires a small amount of ethanol or acetate in the environment. In the case of ethanol, it has to be metabolized, which requires functional alcohol dehydrogenase sodh-1. The resulting acetate is used in de novo fatty acid synthesis, and some of the newly made fatty acids are then derivatized to glycerophosphoethanolamides and released into the surrounding medium. We examined several other Caenorhabditis species and found an apparent correlation between propensity of starved L1s to aggregate and density dependence of their survival in starvation. Aggregation locally concentrates worms and may help the larvae to survive long starvation. This work demonstrates how

Its hard to believe that this past weekend, Easter Sunday - April 16th, marked the 10-year anniversary of the largest school shooting in the U.S. and second deadliest shooting spree (to that of the tragic 2016 Orlando, FL nightclub shooting) in U.S. history. The Virginia Tech tragedy of April 16, 2007 has been referred to by many as the "9/11 for Institutes of Higher Education" (IHEs) - drawing parallels to the legal and operational change in requirements to prepare for and respond to acts of violence on campuses as those national homeland security measures resulting from 9/11. To this day, universities and campuses look to the lessons learned from this tragic event and best practices implemented by Virginia Techs now robust emergency management program which has, in some ways, become a "gold standard" in higher education emergency preparedness.. The following article does an excellent job capturing the events that unfolded that day, summarizing the State and Federal legislative actions taken ...
