Richmond, Virginia -To mark its 25th anniversary, the Virginia Health Care Foundation (VHCF) will announce a new $1.5 million behavioral health initiative designed to increase access to mental health services for medically underserved and uninsured Virginians on Monday, May 22.. Both data and experience document the critical need for mental health services throughout Virginia, said Ralph Howell, the Chairman of VHCFs Board of Trustees. Despite being one of the most affluent regions in the U.S., homelessness is a serious issue in Northern Virginia. A recent census conducted by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments found that there are about 2,000 homeless individuals living in Northern Virginia. Nearly half of that number are individuals in families with children. Even more families and individuals live in unstable housing-doubled or tripled up with other families, couch-surfing, or spending nights in the car or motels. This instability has a significant impact on children, often beginning the cycle of poverty and homelessness that is difficult to break.. And its not just the unemployed who are at-risk of homelessness. With such a high cost of living, low- and even middle-income families may struggle to pay rent when facing a medical emergency or other unexpected expense or life event. According to the National Low Income Housing Coalition, rent for a two-bedroom apartment in Northern Virginia is nearly $1,800 per ...

The United States District Court for the District of Virginia was one of the original 13 courts established by the Judiciary Act of 1789, 1 Stat. 73, on September 24, 1789.[1][2] On February 13, 1801, the Judiciary Act of 1801, 2 Stat. 89, divided Virginia into three judicial districts: the District of Virginia, which included the counties west of the Tidewater and south of the Rappahannock River; the District of Norfolk, which included the Tidewater counties south of the Rappahannock; and the District of Potomac, which included the counties north and east of the Rappahannock as well as Maryland counties along the Potomac.[2] Just over a year later, on March 8, 1802, the Judiciary Act of 1801 was repealed and Virginia became a single District again, 2 Stat. 132, effective July 1, 1802.[2] The District of Virginia was subdivided into Eastern and Western Districts on February 4, 1819, by 3 Stat. 478.[1][2] At that time, West Virginia, was still part of Virginia, and was encompassed in Virginias ...
Skin bacteria could be the best defense that frogs and salamanders have for protection against dangerous diseases like chytrid fungus.. By culturing and sequencing the DNA of naturally occurring bacteria living on the skin of four amphibian species in Virginia, Virginia Tech researchers found samples that could be useful for developing probiotic treatments for amphibians.. There is a lot of interest in using these beneficial bacteria as probiotics to protect amphibians from disease, said Jeni Walke, a postdoctoral researcher at Virginia Tech. As with many applications of microbiology, using probiotics requires having bacteria that can be grown in the laboratory and then, in this case, applied to amphibians.. Specifically, Walke and her team found distinct microbial communities across amphibian species with many of the dominant bacteria represented by cultures, some of which are known to contribute to disease resistance in hosts. Some species of skin bacteria produce antifungals, which, with ...

The Virginia Tech Review Panels August 2007 report (Massengill Report) devoted more than 20 pages to Chos troubled history.[3]:21[83]:31-53 At three years of age, Cho was described as shy, frail, and wary of physical contact.[84] In eighth grade, Cho was diagnosed with severe depression as well as selective mutism, an anxiety disorder that inhibited him from speaking in certain situations and/or to specific people.[85][86] While early media reports carried reports by South Korean relatives that Cho had autism,[87][88] the Massengill Report stated that the relationship between selective mutism and autism was unclear.[83]:34-35 Chos family sought therapy for him, and he received help periodically throughout middle school and high school.[83]:34-39 Early reports also indicated Cho was bullied for speech difficulties ...

A year ago in Lubbock, Texas, West Virginia raced to a 24-7 halftime lead and forced Texas Tech to throw the ball to try to catch up. A difference in this game could be the red zone, where Texas Techs offense has surprisingly struggled, scoring on only 76 percent of their trips inside the 20, which is second worst in the Big 12 conference.. The amount of times that they are handing that thing off is more than what they have been doing, said West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen.. Underwhelming at home against Big 12: West Virginia has the talent to give teams headaches, but they arent as good as home as one might think. Texas Tech remains one of the nations best offenses but seems to be getting a bit more credit that it deserves defensively after a small subset of games.. Today we look at the tale of the tape of the positions for both West Virginia and Texas Tech to see which team in our analysis comes out on top pitted against each other. West Virginia is ninth at about 44 points and has ...

Did the Republican victories in Virginia and New Jersey reflect voter discontent with President Obamas performance-discontent that could produce Republican gains in 2010 if it persists or intensifies? Both states voted for Barack Obama in last years presidential election-Virginia by a margin of 6 points and New Jersey by a margin of 15 points. This year, however, turnout was way down, as it always is in off-year elections. The number of votes cast fell from 3.7 million to less than 2 million in Virginia and from 3.9 million to 2.3 million in New Jersey. And the evidence from exit polls in both states shows that the Republican base was more energized this year than the Democratic base. This year, 18-29 year-old voters, who played a key role in Obamas victory in 2008, made up only 10 percent of the electorate in Virginia and only 9 percent of the electorate in New Jersey compared with 21 percent and 17 percent respectively in 2008. In Virginia, African-Americans and other nonwhites made up only ...
