We have been intrigued by the parallels between PRD1 and adenovirus since we discovered striking similarities in their overall structure in earlier studies, says structural biologist Roger M. Burnett, Ph.D., a professor at The Wistar Institute and senior author on the Nature Structural Biology study. Our results reveal that PRD1 also has similarities to simpler viruses and reinforce the idea that there is a continuum of viral architectures running through viruses that infect such different hosts as bacteria, plants, and animals, including humans. An appreciation of these parallels is important, as findings in one viral system may provide valuable insights into another. We have also learned more about membranes, which are very hard to study with conventional techniques, and see now how they can be involved in packaging viral DNA ...
A team of German scientists has been credited with the discovery of the new super-heavy element 112 more than ten years after intensive laboratory work first yielded a single atom of the novel form of matter.. But before the element can be officially added to the periodic table, Sigurd Hofmann and his team of researchers at the Center for Heavy Ion Research in Darmstadt, Germany have to think of a name for their discovery. Professor Hofmanns pursuit to expand the periodic table first started in 1976. Now, the fusion experiments that he and his colleagues used to create the new element have also uncovered the existence of five additional undiscovered elements with atomic numbers 107-111. Among scientist, these rare atoms are known as super-heavy elements a reference to the large number of protons and neutrons located in the nucleus of the atom where the overwhelming majority of every elements mass is located. To create element 112, Professor Hofmanns group used a 1.2 meter-long particle ...

This one is easy, it is sulfur. Z, the atomic number is the number of protons, positively charged nuclear particles. But Z defines the identity of the element, If Z=1, the element is hydrogen, Z=2, the element is helium, .............Z=16, the element is sulfur. How did I know this? Well, I have access to a Periodic Table which lists all known elements according to atomic number. There should be a Periodic Table beside you now! Which element has a total of 19 protons?

Move over, Roentgenium. Theres a new super-heavy chemical element joining the periodic table.. The yet-to-be-named element 112 has been officially recognized by the tables governing body, the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry.. A team of scientists, lead by Sigurd Hofmann at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung (Centre for Heavy Ion Research) in Darmstadt, Germany are credited with its discovery.. The new element is approximately 277 times heavier than hydrogen, making it the heaviest element in the periodic table, the scientists said in a statement.. Hofmann and his team first synthesized the element in 1996 by firing charged zinc atoms through a 120 meter-long particle accelerator into a lead target. The zinc and lead nuclei were fused to form the new element.. An elements atomic number indicates the number of protons in the nucleus. Element 112 is the sum of the atomic numbers of the two initial elements, zinc having the atomic number 30 and lead the ...

One way to teach the periodic table is to make it into a table-setting exercise; this is perhaps best for children ages 8 to about 10. Make a grid for the periodic table with about half-inch squares, and put it on the wall, ideally over a sheet of ferrous metal. Then, using blank refrigerator magnet material (available at most craft stores), or commercial magnetic elements kits, challenge your students to put the elements in their proper places. This can utilize the color coding and numbers to help them-and its the kind of sorting fun that children (and adults) enjoy.. ...

We see that H3 is an asymmetric structure. One electron, one proton and two neutrons, brought together by attractive forces, cannot combine volumetrically to form a symmetrically stable structure, and as a result, it is unstable and there are very few H3 atoms. Looking at the TRUE unit structure for H1, H2 and H3, we see that all three are bonded by electrical charge, but H1 has volumetric stability and 150 ג units holding it together; H2 has volumetric stability, more mass/energy units and fewer ג units than H1; and H3 has more mass/energy units and ג units, but no volumetric stability. This explains why H1 is the most abundant, H2 less abundant, and H3 correspondingly less stable. The atomic weights of the elements of the periodic table, in amu (atomic mass units), are actually the mean values of atomic masses calculated from a great number of samples. The accepted mean atomic weight for Hydrogen to four significant figures is 1.008. This includes H1 and all isotopes of Hydrogen. If all ...

Unlabelled: Giant viruses able to replicate in Acanthamoeba castellanii penetrate their host through phagocytosis. After capsid opening, a fusion between the internal membranes of the virion and the phagocytic vacuole triggers the transfer in the cytoplasm of the viral DNA together with the DNA repair enzymes and the transcription machinery present in the particles. In addition, the proteome analysis of purified mimivirus virions revealed the presence of many enzymes meant to resist oxidative stress and conserved in the Mimiviridae. Megavirus chilensis encodes a predicted copper, zinc superoxide dismutase (Cu,Zn-SOD), an enzyme known to detoxify reactive oxygen species released in the course of host defense reactions. While it was thought that the metal ions are required for the formation of the active-site lid and dimer stabilization, megavirus chilensis SOD forms a very stable metal-free dimer. We used electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis and activity measurements to show that the

0086] The barrier layer is not particularly limited to a specific one as far as the barrier layer contains a metal or a metal compound. Preferably the metal or the metal compound is capable of forming a thin film (in particular, a transparent thin film). The metal may include, for example, a group 2A element of the Periodic Table (such as beryllium, magnesium, calcium, strontium, or barium); a transition element of the Periodic Table (such as titanium, zirconium, ruthenium, hafnium, tantalum, or copper); a group 2B element of the Periodic Table (such as zinc); a group 3B element of the Periodic Table (such as aluminum, gallium, indium, or thallium); a group 4B element of the Periodic Table (such as silicon, germanium, or tin); and a group 6B element of the Periodic Table (such as selenium or tellurium). Moreover, as the metal compound, there may be mentioned an oxide of the metal, a nitride of the metal, an oxynitride of the metal, a halide of the metal, a carbide of the metal, and others. These ...
In the centre of the Periodic Table there is a large block of metallic elements. We call these the transition metals or transition elements.. Many of the transition elements have similar properties, but they are also different from the other elements in the Periodic Table.. The Transition metals have a typical metallic structure which explains most of their properties The metals atoms exist in a giant structure held together by metallic bonds, and the outer electrons of each atom can move about freely within the metal.. Like all metals, transition metals are very good conductors of electricity and heat because delocalised electrons carry the electrical current or the heat energy through the metal. The transition metals are also hard, tough and strong, yet we can bend or hammer them into useful shapes.. With the exception of mecury, which is liquid at room temperature, the Transition metals have very high melting points. Many properties of the Transition elements are due to the arrangement of ...
Elements Ending with s2p5 = Halogens The halogens are an interesting group. Halogens are members of Group 7A, which is also referred to as 17. It is the only group in the Periodic Table that contains all of the states of matter at room temperature. Fluorine, F2, is a gas, as is chlorine, Cl2. Bromine, Br2, is a liquid and iodine, I2, and astatine, At2, are both solids. What else is neat about Group 7A is that it houses four (4) of the seven (7) diatomic compounds. Remember the diatomics are H2, N2, O2, F2, Cl2, Br2, and I2. Notice that the latter four are Group 17 elements. The word halogen comes from the Greek meaning salt forming. French chemists discovered that the majority of halogen ions will form salts when combined with metals. We all know some of these already: LiF, NaCl, KBr, and NaI. Taking a look at Group 7A in the figure, we can find the same pattern of similar electron configurations as found with group 1A, 2A, and 8A. It is the 17th group in the Periodic Table and it contains only ...

The Ebola virus is the causative agent for Ebola hemorrhagic disease in humans and in other mammals. Since 1976 there have been approximately 35 outbreaks of the Ebola virus with the most recent outbreak infecting more than 24,000 people and causing nearly 10,000 deaths. Although there has been a large effort to develop treatments or vaccines against the Ebola virus, there are currently no known cures for Ebola hemorrhagic disease. Of the five known strains, the Sudan Ebolavirus (SUDV) has caused five different outbreaks including the second largest outbreak between 2000 and 2001. The genome of SUDV is made up of seven genes, including the viral matrix which plays an essential role in virus assembly and packaging. Understanding the specific viral structure of the matrix protein from SUDV will be crucial to learning the mechanism of the disease.

But in a recent letter to the universitys president, Robert H. Bruininks, the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education argued that the education school had signaled its intent to adopt the proposal in a recent application for grant money and was already advising applicants that such changes may be under way.. The letter from Adam Kissel, director of the groups Individual Rights Defense Program, called the proposed requirements for prospective teachers unconstitutional and morally unconscionable and a severe affront to liberty.. Ms. Quam said the education-school panel had come back with some pretty strong language about what it wanted to see. She added, however, that she supported its underlying goal of preparing prospective teachers to deal with students from diverse backgrounds, and noted that about 70 languages and dialects are spoken by students in the Saint Paul school system alone.. The controversy over the Minnesota proposal echoes a recent debate over whether it is ...

Fractional distillation works by using a tall tower of gaps and surfaces, which gradually get colder towards the top. the liquid mixture is heated at the bottom and the liquids boil together to amke a mixture of gases. as each gas reaches a surface at the same temperature as its boiling point (or condensing point) that gas will condense and the condensed liquid will run off. the other gases continue up through the gaps until they reach nthe surface at their condensing temperature. eventually nearly all the gases in the mixture will condens and be collected as separated liquids. the final gas is left at the top of the tower and is collected as a gas ...
