OPTOMETRY STUDENTS FROM PHAM NGOC THACH UNIVERSITY IN HO CHI MINH CITY (VN) PARTICIPATE IN A VISION SCREENING FOR THE ELDERLY -...
The presence of trainees and established professionals together at the screening had many benefits. The optometry students were able to master their skills by watching the eye specialists in practice and by working on real cases. They learnt from experience how to manage a big flow of patients in a short time and how to communicate with the elderly who often require more personal attention.. Another important outcome of a joined screening was the formation of the network of refractionists and optometrists in the region. By working together, the future generations of eye care professionals in Vietnam will be able to sustain the quality of eye care services in their country and will be able to work independently of external support.. After two days of screening, the students were very enthusiastic about this activity. They were happy that they managed to stay focused and help as many people as possible.. --. ICEM - Natural solutions to erosion control in Viet Nam - Case Studies from the Northern Mountainous Region
The impact of natural events such as floods, droughts and coastal storms will become more severe as populations grow and the landscape is increasingly modified, especially as climate change is projected to increase the severity of extreme events. In northern Viet Nam in particular, this change puts infrastructure like roads and irrigation schemes at greater risks from impacts of flash floods and landslides. The cost of building new infrastructure and repairing existing infrastructure will be high.. In many parts of the world, vegetation has been incorporated in engineering design to protect natural terrain and man-made structures from the problems associated with land degradation, but bioengineering has seen little uptake in Viet Nam.. The objective of the Promoting Climate Resilient Rural Infrastructure in Northern Viet Nam project was to demonstrate and promote the application of effective bioengineering measures in road and riverbank slope protection, and to initiate the development of a ...

With its 93,421,835 people, Vietnam is the 14th largest country in the world by population. It is the 66th largest country in the world by area with 331,210 square kilometers. The conquest of Vietnam by France began in 1858 and was completed by 1884. It became part of French Indochina in 1887. Vietnam declared independence after World War II, but France continued to rule until its 1954 defeat by communist forces under Ho Chi MINH. Under the Geneva Accords of 1954, Vietnam was divided into the communist North and anti-communist South. US economic and military aid to South Vietnam grew through the 1960s in an attempt to bolster the government, but US armed forces were withdrawn following a cease-fire agreement in 1973. Two years later, North Vietnamese forces overran the South reuniting the country under communist rule. Despite the return of peace, for over a decade the country experienced little economic growth because of conservative leadership policies, the persecution and mass exodus of ...
Coronavirus Quarantine in Vietnam - World Wide Winther
First a little back story. Im currently employed in my home country, Denmark, and as luck would have it my company has offered me to be an expat in Vietnam. Due to this, I am right now sitting in a hotel near Tan Son Nhat Airport in Ho Chi Minh City with my wife and daughter of 8 months. We have no windows to open, we are not allowed to leave our room and well be here for 22 nights followed by a strict 7 day home quarantine. It is, in all effect, a prison - a luxury prison but a prison none the less.. Why? Quarantine due to Covid-19. Since Im an expat I fit in one of the very few groups that are still allowed to enter Vietnam: Foreign experts and specialists. Even Vietnamese citizens have to wait months perhaps indefinitely to get in.. Its so strict that only a few flights per week are allowed in the country, when you get there the airport is closed, as in you are the only people there when you land. We flew from Dubai and in the plane where a whopping 35 people, including first class. ...

Regarding solar power, more than 100 projects have signed power purchase agreements (PPAs) with Vietnam Electricity (EVN). Wind power potential Vietnam is located in the tropical monsoon area and owns a coastline of more than 3,200 km. Moreover, the average wind speed from the East Sea of Vietnam is quite strong. Therefore, the potential of wind energy in Vietnam is very promising. Thirty-nine percent of Vietnams territory has ...
Supporting SALT Education Programs in Vietnam | Trinh Foundation Australia
Since 2009 Trinh Foundation Australia (TFA) has responded to several requests to support Speech and Language Therapy education programs in Vietnam, beginning when the ENT Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) asked us to run a short course on aspects of speech therapy for doctors and nurses. In 2010, University of Medicine Pham Ngoc Thach (UPNT) in HCMC sought our support in running a 2-year postgraduate certificate course. This course saw the commencement of an enduring partnership with Australian Volunteers International (AVI) which placed six full time Australian speech and language therapists at UPNT to support the rollout of training courses over the next 7 years. During that time, two 2-year postgraduate certificate courses in all aspects of speech and language therapy for children and adults were run (2010-2012 and 2012-2014) and two 1-year postgraduate certificate courses for speech and language therapy for children only (2016 and 2017). These courses trained 65 SLTs. UPNT now ...

Charity cycle events - Tag - Talk Vietnam
A run through the south-western countryside and a cycling adventure in the central mountainous region are among charity events held by expats in the next two months to raise funds for disadvantaged children in Vietnam. The Saigon Hash House Harriers will hold the Red Dress Fun Run on October 3 in the southern Binh Duong Province - some 30 kilometers from Ho Chi Minh City - to raise donations for Operation Smile. Operation Smile is a childrens charity treating facial deformities such as cleft lips and cleft palates for free around the world. Participants attending the Sunday event, held every year, are required to wear a red dress for the run or walk. After a one hour journey out of town, those on board will set off on a 90-minute run or power-walk through the countryside following a trail of shredded paper laid the previous day. After that, its time to socialize with a snack and a few beers before the group heads back to town arriving at about 8 p.m., the Saigon Hash … [Read more...] ...

Litchi-associated Acute Encephalitis in Children, Northern Vietnam, 2004-2009 - Volume 18, Number 11-November 2012 - Emerging...
Since the end of the 1990s, unexplained outbreaks of acute encephalitis in children coinciding with litchi harvesting (May-July) have been documented in the Bac Giang Province in northern Vietnam. A retrospective ecologic analysis of data for 2004-2009 involving environmental, agronomic, and climatic factors was conducted to investigate the suspected association between the outbreaks and litchi harvesting. The clinical, biological, and immunologic characteristics of the patients suggested a viral etiology. The ecologic study revealed an independent association between litchi plantation surface proportion and acute encephalitis incidence: Incidence rate ratios were 1.52 (95% CI 0.90-2.57), 2.94 (95% CI 1.88-4.60), and 2.76 (95% CI 1.76-4.32) for second, third, and fourth quartiles, respectively, compared with the lowest quartile. This ecologic study confirmed the suspected association between incidence of acute encephalitis and litchi plantations and should be followed by other studies to identify the

Six new species of Begonia (Begoniaceae) from limestone areas in Northern Vietnam | Botanical Studies | Full Text
Species of Begonia are richly represented in limestone karst areas across the Sino-Vietnamese border. More than one hundred species were known, many of which were documented recently. In continuation of our systematic studies of Asian Begonia, we report six species of Begonia that are unknown to science, namely B. caobangensis [sect. Platycentrum], B. circularis, B. melanobullata, B. langsonensis, B.locii and B. montaniformis [sect. Coelocentrum] from Northern Vietnam. Diagnostic features that separate them from morphologically allied species are provided. Somatic chromosome numbers were determined, which supports their placement in the respective sections. Foliar SEM microphotographs were taken and described. A careful study of the literature, herbarium specimens and living plants, both in the wild and in cultivation in the experimental greenhouse, supports the recognition of the six new species, which are described and illustrated.

Effects of Air Pollution on Childhood Tuberculosis in Viet Nam | Global Research Projects
Air pollution and tuberculosis (TB) are public health threats of global proportion, with one-third f people worldwide infected with TB and nearly 90% of the global population living in areas where pollution exceeds safe standards set by the World Health Organization. Children in Viet Nam are exposed to concerning levels of secondhand smoke, cooking smoke, and traffic emissions, yet little is known about the effects of these pollutants on childhood TB. We therefore propose to study the clinical and immunologic effects of air pollutants on childhood TB in Viet Nam. Our overall hypothesis is that air pollution exposures will be associated with increased risk for TB infection and altered immunologic responses to Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb). To test this hypothesis, we will first develop and validate a questionnaire and air pollution models that accurately predict air pollution exposures in children at risk for TB living in Viet Nam (Aim 1). I Aim 2, to evaluate air pollution exposures as risk ...
Herbicide used in Vietnam War has lingering effect on vets | South Florida Times
Enid News & Eagle. ENID, Okla. (AP) _ The effects of the Vietnam War still are reaching Enid in 2015.. During the Vietnam War, United States military forces encountered an enemy that didnt march in formation and meet on a battlefield; they fought Viet Cong soldiers who took cover in the thick forests and vegetation that grew in rural areas of South Vietnam, making it almost impossible to see where troops were moving, the Enid News & Eagle (http://bit.ly/1ApBPjH ) reported.. One answer to this problem was a mass defoliation project from 1961 to 1971 to remove the tree cover and deprive the Viet Cong soldiers of food using several herbicides, including a mixture of two phenoxyl herbicides: Agent Orange.. Agent Orange, or Herbicide Orange, got its name from the orange markings on the storage barrels, and was manufactured primarily by Monsanto Corp. and Dow Chemical.. Nearly 20 million gallons of herbicides, including about 12 million gallons of Agent Orange, were sprayed over Vietnam, eastern Laos ...

Two SEAFDEC/AQD scientists attended the 9th Symposium on Diseases in Asian Aquaculture (DAA9) from 24 to 28 November 2014 held at Ho Chi Minh City, Viet Nam.. During the conference, Dr. Rolando Pakingking Jr talked about his study on the Load and composition of the bacterial microbiota of tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) cultured in earthen ponds in the Philippines. He reported that a total of 20 bacterial genera and 31 species were identified, majority of which were gram-negative bacteria constituting 84% of the overall bacterial isolates examined. Dominant bacteria identified in the gills and intestine of tilapia were Aeromonas hydrophila, Bacillus spp., Plesiomonas shigelloides, Shewanella putrefaciens, Pseudomonas fluorescens, Staphylococcus spp., and Vibrio cholerae. These bacteria were also dominant in the pond sediment and rearing water, except S. putrefaciens and V. cholerae which are not present in the water samples examined. According to Dr. Pakingking, this only indicates that ...
Cardio-haemodynamic assessment and venous lactate in severe dengue: Relationship with recurrent shock and respiratory distress....
Dengue can cause plasma leakage that may lead to dengue shock syndrome (DSS). In approximately 30% of DSS cases, recurrent episodes of shock occur. These patients have a higher risk of fluid overload, respiratory distress and poor outcomes. We investigated the association of echocardiographically-derived cardiac function and intravascular volume parameters plus lactate levels, with the outcomes of recurrent shock and respiratory distress in severe dengue. We performed a prospective observational study in Paediatric and adult ICU, at the Hospital for Tropical Diseases (HTD), Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Patients with dengue were enrolled within 12 hours of admission to paediatric or adult ICU. A haemodynamic assessment and portable echocardiograms were carried out daily for 5 days from enrolment and all interventions recorded. 102 patients were enrolled; 22 patients did not develop DSS, 48 had a single episode of shock and 32 had recurrent shock. Patients with recurrent shock had a higher enrolment pulse

East Asia/Southeast Asia :: Vietnam - The World Factbook - Central Intelligence Agency
Vietnam is a densely populated developing country that has been transitioning since 1986 from the rigidities of a centrally planned, highly agrarian economy to a more industrial and market based economy, and it has raised incomes substantially. Vietnam exceeded its 2017 GDP growth target of 6.7% with growth of 6.8%, primarily due to unexpected increases in domestic demand, and strong manufacturing exports.. Vietnam has a young population, stable political system, commitment to sustainable growth, relatively low inflation, stable currency, strong FDI inflows, and strong manufacturing sector. In addition, the country is committed to continuing its global economic integration. Vietnam joined the WTO in January 2007 and concluded several free trade agreements in 2015-16, including the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (which the EU has not yet ratified), the Korean Free Trade Agreement, and the Eurasian Economic Union Free Trade Agreement. In 2017, Vietnam successfully chaired the Asia-Pacific ...

U.S. prisoners of war during the Vietnam War - Wikipedia
Members of the United States armed forces were held as prisoners of war (POWs) in significant numbers during the Vietnam War from 1964 to 1973. Unlike U.S. service members captured in World War II and the Korean War, who were mostly enlisted troops, the overwhelming majority of Vietnam-era POWs were officers, most of them Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps airmen; a relatively small number of Army enlisted personnel were also captured, as well as one enlisted Navy seaman who fell overboard from a naval vessel. Most U.S. prisoners were captured and held in North Vietnam by the North Vietnamese Army; a much smaller number were captured in the south and held by the National Liberation Front (Việt Cộng). A handful of U.S. civilians were also held captive during the war. As many as 13 prisons and prison camps were used to house U.S. prisoners in North Vietnam, the most widely known of which was Hỏa Lò Prison (nicknamed the Hanoi Hilton). The treatment and ultimate fate of U.S. prisoners of ...
HCV Research and News: Risk Factors for Hepatitis C Infection Among Vietnam Era Veterans Versus Nonveterans: Results from the...
Joseph A. Boscarino, Alexandra Sitarik, Stuart C. Gordon, Loralee B. Rupp, David R. Nerenz, Vinutha Vijayadeva, Mark A. Schmidt, Emily Henkle, Mei Lu. Abstract. Research suggests that Vietnam era veterans have a higher prevalence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) than other veterans and nonveterans. However, the reasons for this are unclear, since this research has been conducted among Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) patients and most veterans do not use the VA. The current study compares HCV risk factors between the Vietnam era veterans and nonveterans seen in 4 large non-VA systems to explain this disparity. A total of 4,636 HCV patients completed surveys in 2011-2012. Vietnam era veterans were defined as those who served in the military any time between 1964 and 1975. Bivariate tests followed by logistic regressions, and multivariable modeling were conducted to study risk factors among Vietnam era veterans and nonveterans. Since few veterans were female (~2 %), they were excluded. Among male ...

Table 2 - Epidemiology of Nontuberculous Mycobacterial Lung Disease and Tuberculosis, Hawaii, USA - Volume 23, Number 3-March...
Previous studies found Hawaiians and Asian-Americans/Pacific Islanders to be independently at increased risk for nontuberculous mycobacterial pulmonary disease (NTMPD) and tuberculosis (TB). To better understand NTM infection and TB risk patterns in Hawaii, USA, we evaluated data on a cohort of patients in Hawaii for 2005-2013. Period prevalence of NTMPD was highest among Japanese, Chinese, and Vietnamese patients (>300/100,000 persons) and lowest among Native Hawaiians and Other Pacific Islanders (50/100,000). Japanese patients were twice as likely as all other racial/ethnic groups to have Mycobacterium abscessus isolated (adjusted odds ratio 2.0, 95% CI 1.2-3.2) but were not at increased risk for infection with other mycobacteria species. In contrast, incidence of TB was stable and was lowest among Japanese patients (no cases) and highest among Filipino, Korean, and Vietnamese patients (>50/100,000). Substantial differences exist in the epidemiology of NTMPD by race/ethnicity,
Localities on full alert as hand-foot-mouth disease breaks out | VOV.VN
Since the beginning of the year, a total of 17,451 infections have been reported nationwide, in addition to four deaths in the southern provinces of Kien Giang, An Giang and Long An.. The number of infections has quadrupled, warned the MoH adding the surge mainly occurred in the southern region, including Dong Nai, Long An, Dong Thap, An Giang and Ho Chi Minh City.. It is common for cases of the hand-foot-mouth disease to increase in numbers between April and May and between September and October. Indeed, children can be infected with the disease when their personal hygiene and environmental sanitation conditions are not maintained.. The MoH therefore urged localities to strengthen preventive measures this summer, including encouraging people, especially children, to wash hands with soap and keep the living environment clean.. Healthcare facilities were required to avoid disease cross-transmissions and limit the number of deaths.. ...

Welcome to CDC stacks | Human Infection with Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Virus (H5N1) in Northern Vietnam, 2004-2005 -...
We performed a retrospective case-series study of patients with influenza A (H5N1) admitted to the National Institute of Infectious and Tropical Diseases in Hanoi, Vietnam, from January 2004 through July 2005 with symptoms of acute respiratory tract infection, a history of high-risk exposure or chest radiographic findings such as pneumonia, and positive findings for A/H5 viral RNA by reverse transcription-PCR. We investigated data from 29 patients (mean age 35.1 years) of whom 7 (24.1%) had died. Mortality rates were 20% (5/25) and 50% (2/4) among patients treated with or without oseltamivir (p = 0.24), respectively, and were 33.3% (5/15) and 14.2% (2/14) among patients treated with and without methylprednisolone (p = 0.39), respectively. After exact logistic regression analysis was adjusted for variation in severity, no significant effectiveness for survival was observed among patients treated with oseltamivir or methylprednisolone ...

43 years ago today, the Americans began dropping Agent Orange dioxin on Vietnam. - royby.com
43 years and in that time millions of dollars has (rightly) been paid out to Vietnam Veterans in the United States and Australia (possibly others) in compensation for the effects that contact with this deadly chemical have had. Yet to date, the people most effected and the ones who continue to be most effected have been largely ignored. The decision to spread this defoliant was amoral, but ignoring the plight of citizens of Vietnam is doubly so. Recently, a group of Vietnamese citizens (Vietnam Association of Victims of Agent Orange/Dioxin) filed a civil action in a federal court in New York, USA, demanding restitution for all of the victims. I would like to make you aware of an on-line petition whose purpose is to raise awareness of the action filed and to show support for the victims. The petition can be accessed at: http://www.petitiononline.com/AOVN/petition.html and I urge you to respond by filling it out. It only takes a few minutes to do and may help to make a difference.. Beyond Pesticides Daily News Blog » Blog Archive U.S. to Clean Up Sites in Vietnam Contaminated with Agent Orange - Beyond...
Previous efforts to reforest and fence off contaminated areas have been carried out to prevent local animals and residents from being exposed to soil contaminated with 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD), the potent dioxin contaminant of Agent Orange. TCDD is the most dangerous form of dioxin and the levels found in soil samples from Central Vietnam are more than 200 times the acceptable level set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Efforts to educate the residents about the dangers of dioxin are difficult since most cannot read and many speak local tribal dialects and not Vietnamese. Dioxin, which is very persistent in the environment, accumulates in animal fat, resulting in many grazing livestock contaminated with high levels of dioxins. Poor sanitation and a local diet that relies on fish caught in contaminated waters and fowl that peck on tainted soil keep dioxin exposure a constant threat to the locals. Many families living in nearby villages surrounding contaminated ...
Vietnam: Montagnards Harshly Persecuted | Human Rights Watch
The government says that Montagnards who belong to unregistered house churches outside the control of the official Southern Evangelical Church of Vietnam are Dega Protestants, which authorities allege is not a legitimate religious group but a cover for a Montagnard independence movement. Vietnamese law requires all religious groups to register with the government and operate under government-approved religious organizations.. Human Rights Watch called on the Vietnamese government to immediately end its systematic repression of Montagnards, allow independent religious organizations to conduct religious activities freely, and release all Montagnards imprisoned for peaceful religious or political activities. Until Vietnam improves its record on religious freedom, Human Rights Watch calls on the US government to reinstate Vietnams designation as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) for violations of religious freedom.. Using official Vietnamese media sources, Human Rights Watch documented the ...

Addiction and Alcoholism in Vietnam War Veterans - Recovery First Treatment Center
Addiction and alcoholism among Vietnam veterans has traditionally been very high since the conflict ended in 1975. War is extremely traumatic and often causes soldiers to develop Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD - a condition that frequently co-occurs with addiction or alcoholism. But while any war can cause a soldier or sailor to turn to drugs or alcohol in order to self-medicate their pain and stress, Vietnam veterans were subject to a hostile return when the war was over. Instead of being treated like heroes as their fathers were after World War II, Vietnam veterans were shunned, ridiculed and expelled from their customary peer groups. Additionally, these veterans found it difficult to reintegrate into a workforce that largely had no use for their military skills. Consequently, many of Americas most courageous veterans became disillusioned addicts and alcoholics with few opportunities to better their lives.. PTSD is widely considered the most common cause of addiction or alcoholism ...
FOREST MALARIA IN VIETNAM: A CHALLENGE FOR CONTROL | The American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene
Forest malaria is a complex but common phenomenon occurring in southeast Asia. We studied its epidemiology through a prospective community-based study in central Vietnam. A total of 585 individuals were followed for two years by active case detection and biannual cross-sectional surveys. The prevalence of antibodies to Plasmodium falciparum was constantly about 20% across surveys and the incidence rate of clinical episodes of P. falciparum malaria was 0.11/person-year. Multivariate analysis showed that regular forest activity was the main risk factor for clinical malaria and malaria infections. Untreated bed nets had a significant protective effect (60%), except for people regularly sleeping in the forest. The population-attributable fraction for regular forest activity was estimated to be 53%. Our results confirm the major role played by forest activity on the malaria burden in this area and provide the basis for targeting control activities to forest workers. New interventions based on insecticide

A Comparative Study of the Efficacy of Community Health Clubs in Rural Areas of Vietnam and Zimbabwe to Control Diarrhoeal...
The Community Health Club (CHC) Model in Makoni District, Zimbabwe operated 265 CHCs with 11,600 members from 1999 to 2001 at a cost of US$0.63 per beneficiary per annum. A decade later, 48 CHCs were started in three districts in Vietnam with 2,929 members at a cost of US$1.30. Hygiene behaviour change was compared using a similar survey of observable proxy indicators in both projects, before and after intervention. In Vietnam there was a mean of 36% change in 16 observable proxy indicators (p > 0.001) which compared positively with Makoni where there was a mean of 23% hygiene change in 10 indicators (p > 0.001). In Vietnam, 8 Health Centers reported a reduction of 117 cases of diarrhoeal diseases in CHC communes, compared to only 24 in non-CHC communes in one year; in 8 Health Centers in Makoni, Zimbabwe, a reduction of 1,219 reported cases over a 2-9 year period was reported, demonstrating the efficacy of CHC both in African and Asian context. We suggest that regular government data of reported
Project MUSE - Factors Influencing the Receipt of Hepatitis B Vaccination and Screenings in Vietnamese Americans
Abstract This study examined factors affecting the receipt of both hepatitis B vaccination and screening in the Vietnamese American community of Philadelphia. Hepatitis B is endemic in Southeast Asia; individuals emigrating from endemic areas are at a particularly high risk of hepatitis B infection, resulting in a higher prevalence of liver cancer in the population. Participants recruited at Vietnamese community events in Philadelphia completed a self-administered written questionnaire. In a sample of 207 participants (93% foreign-born), over one half reported that they had not received either a screening or vaccination for hepatitis B in their lifetime. The number one predictor of receiving either service was that the participant was aware of the cancer risk posed by hepatitis B. This association remained strong even when controlling for socio-demographic factors. Based on this finding, future interventions targeting this population should include messages on the cancer risk associated with ...

SP3-22 Child injury prevention in Vietnam: achievements and challenges | Journal of Epidemiology & Community Health
Results Drowning is the leading cause of fatal injury in Vietnamese children followed by road traffic crashes, falls, poisoning, burns and animal bites. There have been notable achievements in terms of increasing awareness of injury facing children at all levels in the community and developing a sound injury prevention policy framework in a relatively short period of time. However, much needs to be done to implement necessary environmental and legislative changes, strengthen child injury surveillance and injury prevention research; and to improve access to health services. ...

Impact Evaluation of a Social Franchise Model for Improving Infant and Young Child Feeding and Child Nutrition in Vietnam -...
Alive & Thrive is an initiative that aims to improve infant and young child feeding practices and reduce childhood stunting. In Vietnam, Alive & Thrives primary intervention is implemented through a social franchise linked with the governments health system. The impact evaluation is conducted using a cluster-randomized design in which 20 commune health centers (CHC) were assigned to the social franchise model, and 20 CHC were assigned to routine government services. Repeated cross-sectional baseline and endline surveys will be used to assess the public health impact of this intervention. The baseline was in 2010 and an endline survey in the same communities will be conducted in 2014. Mixed methods process evaluation will be conducted in 2011, 2012 and 2013 to study the pathways through which the program impact is achieved ...

Second, they can help end the regions lack of modern infrastructure by working together in improving transportation, power supply, telecommunications and energy production. For transportation, China can help build the north-south corridor - a 2,000 km highway linking Kunming, capital of Yunnan province, and the Thai capital city of Bangkok via Laos. Japan, meanwhile, can aid the construction of the east-west corridor - a 1,500 km highway stretching from the port city of Da Nang on Vietnams east coast through Laos and Thailand to Myanmar. The crisscrossing corridors will serve as pivotal transportation arteries, powering the development of regional economy; link the maritime members of ASEAN to the east and south; extend westward to India and link the Mekong River with the Ganges River; provide access to China in the north and help speed up the integration of an emerging regional economic sphere. Also, according to a report by Nikkei News on April 29, Japan and China were discussing the ...
Tracing sources of ammonium in reducing groundwater in a well field in Hanoi (Vietnam) by means of stable nitrogen isotope ...
In the Southern part of Hanoi, high ammonium (NH4+) concentrations in reducing groundwater have been an issue over the last 25 years. Elevated NH4+ concentrations in groundwater, in general, are an indicator of influences from anthropogenic sources, but the buried peat layers in the Red River delta formation are also hypothesized to contribute to the high NH4+ levels (up to 100 mg/l). We traced the sources of NH4+ at the Nam Du well field of the Hanoi water works by means of isotope ratios (N-15/N-14). The delta N-15 values were determined for total sedimentary N and exchangeable NH4+ of the peat material, and for NH4+ dissolved in deep and shallow groundwater, sewage, and surface water. Groundwater NH4+ of the upper (Holocene) and the lower (Pleistocene) aquifers had higher delta N-15 values than did total N and NH4+ of the sediments, and were somewhat higher than the delta N-15 values of NH4+ in sewage and surface water. We conclude that the present conditions of temperature and pH tend to ...

That the 79-year-old Zen master is being allowed to visit for three months is testimony to the transformation Vietnam has undergone in recent years. On the streets, the clatter of traffic and cell phones reveal the modern consumer society that has eclipsed the old communist ways. And a regime deeply suspicious of religion has allowed Nhat Hanh to meet with its prime minister and preach to 9,000 people at the famed Thien Mu Pagoda in central Hue. In a country that has gone through many decades of war, there must be a lot of suspicion and fear and hate and violence in their way of thinking, so the purpose of my visit is to decrease that level of fear and suspicion. . . . The seeds that you plant will sprout in the future, the slender, brown-robed monk said in an interview at the Hanoi pagoda where he is staying. In the 1960s, Nhat Hanh became an early opponent of the Vietnam War. He is credited with inspiring Martin Luther King Jr. to speak out against it and was nominated by King for the Nobel ...
Vietnam: Rights Dialogue Should Produce Concrete Steps | Human Rights Watch
Washington, DC) - The Vietnamese government should use the opportunity of the upcoming US-Vietnam Human Rights Dialogue to release political prisoners and make commitments to end the persecution of bloggers, land rights activists, and other peaceful critics, Human Rights Watch said today. The 17th US-Vietnam Human Rights dialogue will take place in Hanoi beginning on April 12, 2013.. The Vietnamese government has produced an avalanche of political show trials as it tries to keep a lid on growing dissent, said Brad Adams, Asia director of Human Rights Watch. The US should use this opportunity to make it clear that Vietnam needs to engage in serious reforms to improve the rights situation, or there will be severe consequences, including damage to relations with the US.. According to the United States, the purpose of human rights dialogues is to produce concrete results to narrow the differences between international human rights standards and human rights policies and practices in Vietnam. ...

Avocado Production in Vietnam - Nguyen Minh Chau & Vo The Truyen*
Though avocado was introduced into the country a long time ago, its production is still small compared to other tropical fruits such as mango, longan, rambutan and durian, due to various reasons. At present, the avocado is not grown in monoculture and it is rarely found grown under intensive care on an orchard scale. It is observed to be used increasingly as an intercrop or as a shade tree for coffee, other than in mixed culture in fruit plantations, or as a backyard crop, primarily for domestic use .. Because it is not considered a main crop, cultural techniques are often neglected. There has been no varietal improvement work reported since 1967 except a collection of avocado varieties that are maintained at Hung Loc Agriculture Research Center, Dong Nai province, by Professor V.C. Hau. The harvesting and handling techniques are poor, fruits are often picked prematurely and do not give their best quality. Thus, avocado fruit prices are not stable and often are very low compared to other ...
