The analyses were cross-sectional. Participants (n = 4256) were drawn from the Vietnam Experience Study. From military service files, telephone interviews, and a medical examination, occupational, socio-demographic, and health data were collected. One-year prevalence of MDD and GAD was determined with DSM-III criteria. Metabolic syndrome was ascertained from data on: body mass index, fasting blood glucose or a diagnosis of diabetes, blood pressure, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglyceride levels ...

BACKGROUND: Immunoglobulins (Ig) are essential for combating infectious disease. However, high levels are associated with a range of diseases and/or poor health behaviours, such as autoimmune diseases, chronic infection, HIV and excessive alcohol consumption. In the present analyses, we extend this body of work by examining whether higher levels of serum Ig G, A and M are associated with increased mortality risk.. METHODS: Participants were 4255 Vietnam-era, former US army personnel (the Vietnam Experience Study). From military service files, telephone interviews in 1983 and a medical examination in 1986, sociodemographic, and health data were collected. Contemporary morning fasted blood samples were taken from which IgG, IgA and IgM concentrations were determined. Mortality surveillance over 15 years gave rise to deaths ascribed to all-causes, cardiovascular disease mortality, all cancers combined mortality, external cause and other causes (predominantly comprising deaths due to infectious ...

Addiction and alcoholism among Vietnam veterans has traditionally been very high since the conflict ended in 1975. War is extremely traumatic and often causes soldiers to develop Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD - a condition that frequently co-occurs with addiction or alcoholism. But while any war can cause a soldier or sailor to turn to drugs or alcohol in order to self-medicate their pain and stress, Vietnam veterans were subject to a hostile return when the war was over. Instead of being treated like heroes as their fathers were after World War II, Vietnam veterans were shunned, ridiculed and expelled from their customary peer groups. Additionally, these veterans found it difficult to reintegrate into a workforce that largely had no use for their military skills. Consequently, many of Americas most courageous veterans became disillusioned addicts and alcoholics with few opportunities to better their lives.. PTSD is widely considered the most common cause of addiction or alcoholism ...

The overall long-term goal of this project is to prevent AD, which affects almost 50% of the US population over 85 years of age, and is the most common cause of dementia. Clinical signs and symptoms of AD include cognitive impairments, especially memory and emotional disturbances. In order to accomplish this goal of prevention, a population at risk must be identified. Evidence suggests that both TBI and PTSD increase risk for cognitive decline, AD, and dementia.. TBI and PTSD are common problems resulting from military service. Thus far, there have been no prospective studies using imaging and biomarkers, which directly measure changes in the brain and AD pathology to study the effects of TBI and PTSD. This proposed study will provide novel data to test these hypotheses. The results will have major implications for identifying, subjects at increased risk for AD, a possible need for early detection of AD in military Veterans with histories of TBI and PTSD, and a possible need to employ prevention ...

Curtis Tarr, who oversaw the lottery for the draft during the Vietnam War as head of the Selective Service program, has died.. Tarr died of pneumonia on Friday at his home in Walnut Creek, CA. He was 88.. President Richard Nixon appointed Tarr as director of the Selective Service System in 1970. The nation had held its first lottery drawing for the draft in December 1969, and Tarr was responsible for implementing the changes, said Dick Flahavan, spokesman for the Selective Service. Before the lottery, local draft boards had control over who was called and who was not.. The lottery system took the local personalities out of the system, Flahavan said, adding that it was much fairer, much more objective, more efficient.. Read more at militarytimes.com.. ...
All cause mortality was significantly reduced by 15% in this group, with a lesser and non-significant deficit in all cancer deaths and no decrease in all cancer incidence. Specific cancer sites demonstrated an increase in risk, with twice the risk of mortality from head and neck cancers. There was also a twofold and significantly increased incidence of CLL. Other lymphohaematopoietic disorders, specifically multiple myeloma and Hodgkin disease, showed non-significant mortality excesses, reflected by a similar increase in incidence.. One of the strengths of the study was that the New Zealand forces served with the Australian Army in one geographical area, in contrast to USA cohorts which proved more difficult to enumerate and locate geographically.3 A further strength was the excellent follow-up in terms of the 84% of the cohort that we are able to trace, which would tend to minimise bias (in the direction of underestimating disease risks) in the results. We did have weaknesses in that we were ...

Judging from the hoopla and hype in the media, from CNN to the NY Times, the decision by retired four-star general Wesley Clark to throw his hat into the ring as a Democratic Party presidential contender is something akin to the second coming. Hes a genuine hero, were told, and Americans, particularly in key states like Texas and the Southeast, will go for his military background.. What is this passion for generals as leaders, anyhow? There was the same kind of fawning adoration being expressed about John McCain during the Republican primaries last time around. (In fact, it was in a pathetic effort to capture some of that adoration that George Bush, the National Guard deserter and scofflaw, donned his now infamous flight suit and did an orchestrated and carefully staged landing on an aircraft carrier flight deck.). What, its fair to ask though, does Sen. John McCains Vietnam-era bomber flying and POW experience, or Sen. John Kerrys Vietnam-era river patrol boat captaining experience, offer ...

Advice for students considering studying abroad?. Travel with an open mind and perspective. Its very likely that you will encounter cultures, customs and norms quite different from yours; instead of trying to resist them embrace them while staying true to your own values and character.. Studying in Canada has been a great experience for me. It wasnt a big culture shock for me and I was pleasantly surprised by the degree of hospitality that was extended towards me. Academically UBC has consistently challenged me to gear up my skills, and pushing the envelope has seemed to be the key to success. Knowledge is without a shadow of a doubt one of the greatest assets one can possess, so make like a sponge and absorb as much as you can. .. As an accomplished photographer, how did you benefit from your trip to Shanghai last summer?. The art of photography has always fascinated me. I remember getting my very own DSLR a few years ago, holding the camera and instantly realizing that I had a long road ...
My dad gave me his car a few years ago. It had a Vietnam War Veteran plate and since it was going to expire in a few months anyway I kept it. When it was time to renew the plate I explained to the DMV that I wanted a regular plate. A new one. They said I could only get one if the other had been lost or stolen. I told them it was rusty and I just wanted a new one. Again stating just a regular, non Vietnam Veteran plate. A few weeks later I received the new plate which was exactly like the one I replaced. I still have it because I figured if someone went to all the trouble to make another one why not use it? Sometimes the DMV folks are not the sharpest knives in the drawer.. ...
It has been painted as the first misstep by newly minted President Moon Jae-in. Add in the fact that the NFL received millions of taxpayer dollars from the Department of Defense and the National Guard for patriotic displays, and it puts the entire Kaepernick hullabaloo in a different light. Fans should have confidence that their hometown heroes are being honored because of their honorable military service, not as a marketing ploy, Senator John McCain, the Vietnam War veteran and P.O.W., said in a statement last year coinciding with Tackling Paid Patriotism, a joint oversight report released by McCain and his fellow Arizona Republican Senator John Flake ...
In a speech before the U.S. Senate on March 27, 1986, Kerry accused President Ronald Reagan of leading the United States into another Vietnam in Central America, accusing the administration of Nixon-like duplicity and saying that he should recognize it because of his Vietnam experience. Kerry told his colleagues he was on Navy duty in Cambodia at a time when President Richard M. Nixon lied to the public and said that there were no U.S. forces in that country. He even took enemy fire. In his words, I remember Christmas of 1968 sitting on a gunboat in Cambodia. I remember what it was like to be shot at by Vietnamese and Khmer Rouge and Cambodians, and have the president of the United States telling the American people that I was not there; the troops were not in Cambodia. I have that memory which is seared - seared - in me ...
Since it opened 50 years ago, the Haight Ashbury Free Medical Clinic has been a refuge for everyone from flower children to famous rock stars to Vietnam War veterans returning home addicted to heroin.

Because they are spatial and visual, public memorials exist as walk-through texts, giving form to the nations preferred narratives of shared loss or defiant restoration. Or so one would expect with the most visited site in New York, the 9/11 Memorial Park created on the site of the original twin towers.. The park in the dense downtown area covers sixteen acres and consists of rows of Swamp White Oaks bridging two massive black cataracts 30-feet deep. These pools are the exact footprints of the two original towers that used to dominate the lower Manhattan skyline. Each wall in these open depressions is softened by waterfalls that descend in a rush to their sub-grade floors. The water then flows into another square opening at the center, dropping to a deeper level that cannot be seen by a viewer at the edge. The idea of total destruction is thus restated, bringing a visitor back to the awful moments when fire and gravity claimed these spaces.. The pools are framed at the top by waist-high ...
My work has always been about the environment, Maya Lin 81 ARC 89 noted in a lecture given at the Yale University Art Gallery on Oct. 7. Indeed, Lin, that most prodigious of alumni architects who famously designed the Vietnam Veterans Memorial while a senior at Yale, spent a large portion of the lecture evangelizing about the dangers of climate change. But the time Lin spent stepping off her soapbox and discussing the intersection of her art with its environment proved far more insightful.. While flipping through a PowerPoint displaying her recent work, it became clear that Lin has shifted her focus from architecture to art, mainly the sculptural. She has stepped away from the memorials and monuments that catalyzed her meteoric rise, though these still echo in many of her contemporary pieces.. The geometry blurring into abstraction of Lins Vietnam Veterans Memorial recurs throughout her recent oeuvre. Lines fascinate her, with thickness, curvature and course lending each line a distinctive ...

BACKGROUND: There is an association between higher white blood cell counts and all-cause and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality. However, little is known about the prognostic significance of circulating lymphocyte and lymphocyte subset numbers. AIMS: The present study examined the association between T-, CD4-, CD8- and B-cell numbers, and the CD4:CD8 ratio, and all-cause and CVD mortality. METHODS: Lymphocyte and lymphocyte subset numbers were measured by flow cytometry in a cohort of 4256 male middle-aged Vietnam-era US veterans. Mortality was tracked for 15 years and cause of death was determined from death certificates. RESULTS: In fully adjusted survival analyses, high circulating T-cells numbers were associated with increased risk of both all-cause [hazard ratio (HR) = 1.75, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.15-2.66] and cardiovascular (HR = 3.57, 95% CI 1.53-8.33) mortality. The former association appeared to reflect an effect for high CD8-cells numbers, the latter an effect for high ...

MCINTYRE: Well, Wolf, here the words youre not going to hear at the Pentagon this week. Youre not going to hear anyone say that this was a turning point. You certainly wont hear the Vietnam-era phrase, light at the end of the tunnel. But there is a very cautious optimism at the Pentagon, in part because of something we havent mentioned yet, which is the appointment of those two key cabinet ministries, interior and defense, but one thing that youve also, we havent paid much attention to is that very quietly Defense Secretary Rumsfeld signed an order this week going ahead with the deployment of another battalion of U.S. troops from Germany. Theyre just rotating one for one for the troops there, but thats a signal that theyre not ready to make any reductions in U.S. troops in Iraq any time in the short term. BLITZER: I guess Christiane, the key question now, is this new Iraqi government of national unity, including the Shia, the Sunni and the Kurd, are they going to be able, based on ...
In 1984, Patricia E. Kelly, a U.S. Marine Corp Vietnam-era veteran and African-America cowgirl, founded Ebony Horsewomen, Inc.(EHI). As challenging as the task may have seemed at the time, Patricia had a dream to level the playing field for inner-city youth to have access to the same opportunities, resources, equine-based programming and equine assisted therapy as their suburban counterparts. She knew that this would be life-altering and enriching for those who became involved.. Pushing forward through obstacles and challenges presented in the traditionally suburban and rural horse industry, EHI not only progressed, but broke barriers, stereotypes, and thrived to become the only organization of its kind in America.. To further the mission of using horses to heal and educate, EHI has become the regional leader in the provision of Equine Assisted Therapy and Psychotherapy, and is approved for NASW/CT Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for furthering the education of mental health professionals and ...
As far as the props used in the film go, I dont necessarily think one plane in particular is going to be the end-all find. While there are actually a lot of brand similarities between the equipment, ECU and Ecto-1/1A, some of it comes from completely different sources. Some of it being older than others too. We know the oxygen tanks and other pieces come straight out of WWII era military parts. Then theres Vietnam-era mil-spec, late 70s aerospace parts and even early 80s computer tech. The stuff comes from all over and in a place like that its all going to be in piles of junk unfortunately. I mean, I was just watching one of the JAWS (I think the 4th one?) films a few weeks ago. I found that the infamously hard-to-find skirted trap knob (thats also used on the ECU) can be sourced from a sonar device thats used on the boat in the film. From some company in Tujunga, CA. where they also filmed E.T. - The Extra Terrestrial. So who knows where this stuff really comes from? I think the best bet ...
The Foreign Miners Tax of 1850 was designed to force Mexican and Chinese miners off of their claims in California, but the miners fought back (including, legendarily, one Joaquin Murieta). Also: putting some numbers on Joan Baezs Vietnam-era tax resistance.

Research in the Gregory Kirk Lab examines the natural history of viral infections - particularly HIV and hepatitis viruses - in the U.S. and globally. As part of the ALIVE (AIDS Linked to the Intravenous Experience) study, our research looks at a range of pathogenetic, clinical behavioral issues, with a special focus on non-AIDS-related outcomes of HIV, including cancer and liver and lung diseases. We use imaging and clinical, genetic, epigenetic and proteomic methods to identify and learn more about people at greatest risk for clinically relevant outcomes from HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C infections. Our long-term goal is to translate our findings into targeted interventions that help reduce the disease burden of these infections.. Research Areas: global health, Hepatitis, Africa, AIDS, cancer, HIV, drugs, liver diseases ...
Monsters are created. As I look to Dahmers childhood, my heart aches for a young child that never had a chance. If we dont start to understand this, we will continue to fail children, we will continue to marginalize them and be astonished by horrible long-term outcomes. There are many lingering questions that both Dahmers own testimony raises, as well as that of his father who wrote a book called, A Fathers Story. My hope is that this brief assessment will support a more sophisticated inquiry into Dahmers early experiences, and turn our attention to the very real problem of early childhood abuse and neglect. If we genuinely seek to eradicate atrocities such as Sandy Hook from this world, we must be willing to understand its origins and not leave its mystery in the hands of the gods. The Adverse Childhood Experiences Study has recognized early adversity as the single most influential factor leading to illness, poor quality of life, and death. It is clear from the literature on the effects ...
