At a time when many CIOs are looking to hold the line on IT spending, a new HD videoconferencing system might seem like a luxury. Certainly, the technology is not high on many IT shopping lists. According to an analyst, HD videoconferencing is in the early stages of maturity, with market penetration in the single digits, or less than 5%. But as prices fall, with some high-definition systems selling for less than $10,000 per endpoint, Gartner is urging organizations to pay the purchase serious mind. An investment in new HD videoconferencing equipment can produce long-term benefits for the customer and the environment. Decreasing the amount of executive travel is an important factor, especially with fuel prices so high. The technology can contribute to a companys Green IT initiative, as well as arguably increase employee productivity and quality of life ...

The previous experience of the San Diego Computer Society has lead the belief that when a presentation is made, it is best to have a live audience at the physical location where the presentation is made. This proposition is being tested during the study. Initially, the presentation has been made with one of the participating computer user groups physically hosting the presentation. The groups that are linked to the presentation via videoconferencing will see the presentation and opportunities for feedback to the presentation site and presenter will available. Various forms of feedback will be tried. Two transmission standards for videoconferencing have been used, ISDN using the H.320 protocol set and Internet using the CU-SeeMe protocol set. Bandwidth of 100 Kbps or greater was required initially at each participating site. Lower bandwidths have been tried subsequently. One-way multicasts using Microsoft Windows Media with email feedback also has been tried, which requires low bandwidths at the ...
The very essence of work is changing, and so too is collaboration, including videoconferencing. Increasingly, people are working remotely. Those who work from offices these days often do so in open, shared spaces. When they need to do private meetings or interface with remotely located colleagues, customers, or partners, they may move to small conference rooms to do so. And now videoconferencing companies are delivering solutions they say are uniquely aimed at addressing the requirements of these so-called huddle rooms.

The H.263 standard was first designed to be utilized in H.324 based systems (PSTN and other circuit-switched network videoconferencing and videotelephony), but it also found use in H.323 (RTP/IP-based videoconferencing), H.320 (ISDN-based videoconferencing, where it was the most widely used video compression standard),[2] RTSP (streaming media) and SIP (IP-based videoconferencing) solutions. H.263 is a required video coding format in ETSI 3GPP technical specifications for IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) and Transparent end-to-end Packet-switched Streaming Service (PSS).[3][4][5] In 3GPP specifications, H.263 video is usually used in 3GP container format. H.263 also found many applications on the internet: much Flash Video content (as used on sites such as YouTube, Google Video, and MySpace) used to be encoded in Sorenson Spark format (an incomplete implementation of H.263[6][7][8]). The original version of the RealVideo codec was based on H.263 until the release ...

In what was certainly the single-largest event for a video conference, millions of people worldwide gathered around their televisions on July 20, 1969 to tune into a video conversation between two groups of people. But please dont feel as if you need to land someone on the moon in order to benefit from video conferencing technology. And there certainly are many benefits. Travel, or the lack thereof, is probably the most obvious. For large national and international companies, spending dollars bringing employees in to HQ for meetings makes little sense. Money, time, employee inconvenience all come into play.. [Video conferencing] is so much more than just about saving money, said Ken Avis, president of the Florida-US based The ProMedia Group, which provides audio-visual and video conferencing services to both large and small-scale businesses. It changes the way you do business. You make yourself more available, and you can have face-to-face meetings without the travel expenses.. Video ...

Description: This study examined the effectiveness of employing videoconferencing and Web-based instruction in the preparation of special education personnel. Due to the acute shortage of special education personnel, it was anticipated that the use of videoconferencing and online instruction would provide a convenient way for students to attend class without having to travel to the actual location of the educational site. Further, it was believed that this initiative would result in higher student enrollment in special education teacher certification programs, consequently leading to an increase of personnel in the field. Moreover, the increase in personnel would enhance the ability of educational institutions to address the dismal academic, social, and behavioral outcomes of students with disabilities. Information for the study was collected from surveys that investigated how students perceived the use of videoconferencing and web-based instruction in the preparation of special education ...

The aim of this research was to evaluate the integration of video conferencing technologies in a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) Programme in the United Kingdom for the pedagogical development of trainee teachers. Two types of video conferencing were employed in this case study of a Primary PGCE course. Firstly, weekly multi-point video conferences over VOIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) took place between a group of trainees whilst on school-based teaching experiences. Secondly, many-to-many video conferences were employed to enable trainees to observe remotely a number of classroom lessons, following which they had the opportunity to interact „live‟ with teacher and pupils. The underpinning goal of this study was to understand the process by which trainees „become teachers‟ within their university community of practice (CoP) moving towards the school CoP, with the identity issues involved, and to explore ways that technology potentially supports, sustains or expands this ...

Luleå University of Technology has since 1997 used net-based learning environments based on desktop video-conferencing tools to distribute courses to students. It has been claimed that the environment gives remotely attending students equal possibilities as traditionally attending students to take an active part of a course, as well as enhancing the learning experience for all students. This is in part true, but in reality there are many pedagogical and technical obstacles to overcome before a course can be seen as successful. This paper identifies a number of problems, which will be considered from both a pedagogical and technical perspective.. ...

TRENT DUFFY: The Presidents participation in the August 28 videoconference was open to the press, and the full transcript of this videoconference was released to Congress and the public in the fall of 2005. President Bush participated in briefings, phone calls and conversations throughout this process, and his Administration was focused on making sure that the Federal assets were in place to help the people of New Orleans. The President has made clear - as recently as this Tuesday - that he was not satisfied with the Federal response. That is why he ordered a comprehensive lessons learned report and plans to work aggressively to implement improvements to our disaster response plans by the start of hurricane season.
Videoconferencing is efficacious, acceptable and equivalent to face to face for a range of psychotherapies, including a Comprehensive Behavioral Interventions for Tics (CBIT), but limited due to lack of portability, and restricted accessibility. An alternative is Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) transmission, allowing home delivery of treatment. The present study examined the preliminary efficacy, feasibility, and acceptability of CBIT-VoIP. Twenty youth (8-17) with CTDs participated in a randomized, waitlist-controlled trial of CBIT. Assessments were conducted via VoIP and internet surveys. Significantly greater reductions in total clinician-rated and parent-reported tic severity were found in the CBIT relative to the waitlist-control group, with 33.3% of those in CBIT considered treatment responders. Treatment satisfaction and the therapeutic alliance were high. Higher parent satisfaction with videoconferencing was associated with higher decreases in clinician-rated tic severity. Positive
