Solenolantana (Nakai) H. Hara for V. carlesii, V. subsect. Urceolata Nakai for V. urceolatum, and V. subsect. Viburnum for the remaining species. Recent phylogenetic work shows that V. subsect. Urceolata may be separated from the remainder of V. sect. Viburnum. Viburnum subsect. Lantana and V. subsect. Solenolantana form a monophyletic group, and the recognition of V. subsect. Solenolantana makes V. subsect. Lantana paraphyletic.. ...
Prune away egg-infested branches during the winter. Viburnum Leaf Beetle Pyrrhalta viburni (Paykull); Family: Chrysomelidae Larvae and feeding damage. Common throughout Europe, the viburnum leaf beetle (Pyrrhalta viburni) was first spotted in the United States in 1996 in upstate New York. Serious infestations kill the plants both in our gardens and in the wild. Keep in mind insecticides provide little control to eggs, or when you see the adults feeding. Price: Check the current price A note of caution: Although spinosad is not as broad-spectrum nor as long-lasting as many synthetic insecticides, it can kill bees and other beneficial insects along with pests. Pour the measured concentrate into your sprayer, add the appropriate amount of water, and mix well. Viburnum Leaf Beetles - Plant resistant viburnum varieties to avoid viburnum leaf beetles. Inoculum Production, Inoculation, and Disease Evaluation. The two isolates of P. ramorum used in this study were cultured originally from plants in an Oregon macro-propagation, production nursery. Isolate 03-74-N10-A (N10A) was recovered from rhododendron (Rhododendron sp.) and is a North American genotype of the A-2 mating type. Isolate 03-74-D12-A (D12A) (European genotype, A-1 mating type) was recovered from Doublefile viburnum (Viburnum plicatum var. tomentosum Mariesii ) in the same nursery. Cultures were maintained and stored under refrigeration on agar slants until used, and then were transferred frequently on dilute V8 juice agar plates (30 ml/liter of clarified V8 juice instead of the normal 150 to 200 ml/liter) (5). Sporangia to be used as inoculum were produced on dilute V8 juice agar plates (150-mm diameter), starting from a sporangial suspension spread on the plates that were then incubated in a dark incubator at 20 C for 8 days. Sporangia were removed from the plates by flooding ...

If doing what is best for the environment is foremost to you, the answer is clear: Grow seed-grown natives in the soil that existed in your garden before your home was even built. You wont be adding fertilizer and other soil amendments, and the plants will feed native insects, birds and other wildlife. It sounds like paradise.. The result may not make you happy, though.. Jake Pierson of Piersons Nursery in Dayton, a wholesale business that supplies most Maine nurseries and nurseries in other parts of the country, says that his familys company sells the species version of many natives.. The problem is that after a couple of years, the species plant does not meet the customers expectations, Pierson said. Although they like the idea of having the plant that grows in the wild, when it comes down to it, they dont like the way the wild plant looks in their urban or suburban garden.. Take, for example, the arrowwood viburnum, Viburnum dentatum. It has glossy green leaves and blue fruit. The ...
Description: This is a shrub with multiple narrow trunks and ascending to slightly spreading branches. The bark of trunks and branches is gray, while twigs are brown and glabrous with white lenticels. Young non-woody shoots are green to reddish green and glabrous. Pairs of opposite leaves occur along the shoots and twigs. Individual leaves are 2-4 long and nearly as much across (oval in outline); they are palmately 3-lobed, and sparingly dentate to smooth along their margins. There are either a few large teeth or they are absent altogether. The shallow to moderately deep lobes have pointed tips, while the base of each leaf is rounded. The upper leaf surface is medium green and hairless, while the lower surface is pale green and either hairless or hairy along the veins. The slender petioles are -1 long, light green to red, and glabrous. Near the apex of each petiole where it joins the leaf, there are 1-2 pairs of tiny glands with rounded tops. These glands may become deformed or nearly ...

Early flowering bulbs like snowdrops that are in flower here at the Chicago Botanic Garden are very tolerant of the cold. Daffodil and tulip foliage is coming up; these might end up being damaged by a spell of cold weather, but this should not affect the spring flowers. You do not need to take any special maintenance steps to protect these plants.. If you have some perennials that are growing in a warm area of the garden with more pronounced growth, they might benefit from a light layer of mulch. For the most part, though, there is nothing special for most gardeners to do in their perennial beds.. This is great weather to prune but proceed with care. Spring flowering shrubs like viburnums, lilacs, and forsythia set their flower buds last year so pruning done at this time of year will remove flower buds and reduce the number of spring flowers. You can still prune-just be aware of the flower buds as you are pruning. Forsythia flowers along the stems while viburnums will have a flower bud at the ...

It makes little sense to smoke it rather than ingest it in other ways. If you want it to act on or be absorbed via your lungs it could be nebulised. If you want it to have a different curve, you can take it per os. However, its only special in the sense that every herb is special. Its not magic, any more than Aloe vera or Eleutherococcus senticosus is. A lot of completely unsung herbs are excellent but lack glamour, for instance Viburnum opulus is marvellous stuff for many reasons, but mention it to a non-herbalist and theyre either likely to think of it as an ornamental tree or not to have heard of it. ...

The major objective of this study was the investigation of the antioxidant and antimicrobial potential of some gemmotherapic remedies obtained from several plants: Betula pubescens (BP), Ribes nigrum (RN), Rosa canina (RC), Viburnum lantana (VL) and Carpinus betulus (CB) often combined in therapeutic protocols with propolis tincture (P) to reduce certain symptoms of respiratory diseases. The phytochemical composition was also determined, in order to establish a correlation between the chemical composition and the already mentioned beneficial effects obtained upon administration. The results revealed an important amount of polyphenolic compounds for the propolis tincture (P) and consequently a very good antioxidant and antibacterial activity. Regarding the glycerinic extracts, RC and BP were the richest in total polyphenols and flavonoids, while the VL extract was the poorest in all analysed compounds. RC extract was the only one containing all three analysed triterpenes, with lupeol identified ...

In others the heap may be left for two years, and many of the seeds will not germinate till the third spring ...
Theres a growth inhibitor within the bark, roots, leaves, stems and fruits of walnut trees. Some plants are more tolerant of this than others, and will grow near walnut trees. Other plants are extremely sensitive and will not grow. Other considerations to make when planting under walnuts is that the trees have shallow root systems and do not like competition for moisture and food from other plants. A final consideration is that walnuts like their roots on the dry side, and many other landscape plants need more water than is healthy for walnut trees. Pines and spruces are both listed as sensitive to juglone (the growth inhibitor from walnut trees) and would not thrive if planted near walnuts. Some alternate choices with similar growth and appearance are Arborvitae, Viburnum, Forsythia, Redbud, Black Locust ...

Have you ever wondered why white blossoms are usually so fragrant? I love white blossoms, for their delicate appearance as well as for their fragrance. Jasmine, Star Jasmine {for colder climates}, Gardenias, Nicotiana, Citrus blossoms, Tuberose, Stock, Phlox and certain Viburnums are great options for bringing fragrance to the garden {or home}. The reason they smell so deliciously is to attract the bees. Without their strong fragrance the bees would just whiz by them and choose a more colorful blossom to pollinate ...

Alaskan berries are known for their phenolic power:. Dinstel R.R., Cascio J., & Koukel S. (2013). The antioxidant level of Alaskas wild berries: high, higher and highest. Int J Circumpolar Health, 72. DOI: 10.3402/ijch.v72i0.21188 In the last few years, antioxidants have become the stars of the nutritional world. Antioxidants are important in terms of their ability to protect against oxidative cell damage that can lead to conditions, such as Alzheimers disease, cancer and heart disease - conditions also linked with chronic inflammation. The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of Alaskas wild berries may have the potential to help prevent these diseases.. Objective: To discover the antioxidant levels of Alaska wild berries and the ways these antioxidant levels translate when preservation methods are applied to the berry.. Design: This research centred on both the raw berries and products made from the berries. In the first year, a variety of wild berries were tested to discover their ...
Relatively little is known about the genomic basis and evolution of wood-feeding in beetles. We undertook genome sequencing and annotation, gene expression assays, studies of plant cell wall degrading enzymes, and other functional and comparative studies of the Asian longhorned beetle, Anoplophora glabripennis, a globally significant invasive species capable of inflicting severe feeding damage on many important tree species. Complementary studies of genes encoding enzymes involved in digestion of woody plant tissues or detoxification of plant allelochemicals were undertaken with the genomes of 14 additional insects, including the newly sequenced emerald ash borer and bull-headed dung beetle. The Asian longhorned beetle genome encodes a uniquely diverse arsenal of enzymes that can degrade the main polysaccharide networks in plant cell walls, detoxify plant allelochemicals, and otherwise facilitate feeding on woody plants. It has the metabolic plasticity needed to feed on diverse plant species,
[email protected]. WASHINGTON, Oct. 17, 2016-The U.S. Department of Agricultures Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) today is reminding the public of the state and federal regulations to ensure the Asian longhorned beetle (ALB) does not spread to other areas from the quarantine in Worcester County, Mass. Regulations that restrict the movement of woody material, such as firewood, reduce the likelihood of spreading the tree-killing pest.. Preventing the spread of the Asian longhorned beetle to areas outside of the quarantine is critical to eliminating the beetle from Massachusetts, and this cannot be done without the help of property owners and business owners in the state, said APHIS ALB Eradication Project Manager Ryan Vazquez. Recently, we have seen tree material move outside the regulated area, and that is why we are reminding the public to adhere to the regulations, especially when stocking up on firewood for the winter.. ALB regulatory officers conduct ...

I like all plants, but I especially like those that have a good backstory. With a name like Ilex vomitoria¸ how could the yaupon holly that is so commonly used in our gardens and landscapes not have a good story to tell? Yaupon holly is a small evergreen tree growing 15-to-20 feet tall with gray, arm-sized trunks and many branched, twiggy limbs that give plants a stiff, picturesque habit. Short shoots form on older plants that have leaves of diminishing size to the tip, giving these side branches an almost thorn-like look. The evergreen leaves are bright green in the summer but take on a grayish cast in winter. They are up to one and one-half inches long, but without prickles found in many of our other hollies. Like all hollies, these plants are dioecious, with female plants producing small pea-sized, fleshy, bright red berries during the winter months. Asian longhorned beetles have destroyed thousands of trees across the country. Learn how to identify and check your trees for this invasive pest with tips from HGTV.
The Asian Longhorned Beetle (ALB)(Anoplophora glabripennis) is an invasive beetle believed to have arrived in New York from its native China via untreated packing crates and wooden pallets. Infestations have been discovered in Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, and Staten Island.. Tunneling by ALB larvae damages the vascular system of the tree. Repeated attacks lead to dieback of the tree crown, and, eventually, death of the tree. The beetle presents a serious threat to the trees of New York City and has also infested parts of Long Island, Chicago, Ohio, Massachusetts, and New Jersey.. The beetles are known to attack maple, horsechestnut, elm, willow, birch, poplar, and ash trees. Currently the only effective means to control the beetle is to remove infested trees and destroy them by chipping or burning. To prevent further spread of the insect, quarantine zones have been established to avoid transporting wood from the infested areas.. Early detection of infestations and rapid tree removal are crucial ...
Once a breeding population of an invasive species has established in a novel environment, management efforts commonly focus on eradicating the species or limiting its spread. However, information describing the biology and behavior of an invading organism is often limited, highlighting the need to assess dispersal with incomplete information. Here we extend a previously described graph-theorydriven model of dispersal for the Asian longhorned beetle (Anoplophora glabripennis Motschulsky) to evaluate the impacts of three poorly documented biological and behavioral parameters on the spatial extent and distribution of dispersal risk in three breeding beetle populations under eradication in the United States. The parameters assessed include 1) whether beetles disperse from lightly/recently infested trees, 2) the presence and impact of anisotropic dispersal, and 3) the rate at which beetles emigrate from infested trees. The results suggest three key patterns. First, beetle behavior, i.e. dispersal ...
This is truly the stuff horror films and nightmares are made of: Last week the RI Department of Environmental Management released a report that the presence of Asian Longhorned Beetle (ALB) larva was suspected in a load of firewood delivered to a home in Cranston, RI. The wood came from a property in Worcester, MA known to be infested. Even though Cranston is all the way across the Bay from Blithewold, this hits just a little too close to home! The beetles themselves dont range far from their chosen host tree, but the scary thing is, we do and it has hitchhiked on green wood from China to New York to New Jersey to Illinois to Massachusetts (not necessarily in that order) and now maybe even to little Rhody.. Remember when the USDA hired US Forest Service smoke jumpers to spot beetles at the tippy tops of Central Parks treasured American Elms? Thats when I first became very aware of just how tragic and deadly an infestation would be. ALB feed on hardwoods - maple, horse chestnut, willow, and ...

Background Asian longhorned beetle (Anoplophora glabripennis), or ALB, is a destructive wood-boring pest of maple and other hardwoods, eventually killing them. It most likely came to the United States inside wood packaging material from Asia. Since its first discovery in Brooklyn, NY, in 1996, the beetle has been found in five States: New York (1996), Illinois (1998), New Jersey (2002), Massachusetts (2008), and Ohio (2011). APHIS and its cooperators have eradicated infestations in Illinois; New Jersey; Manhattan, Staten Island, and Islip, NY; and Boston, MA. Eradication efforts continue in Brooklyn and Queens, NY; on central Long Island, NY; in Worcester County, MA; and in Clermont County, OH. For eradication efforts to succeed, residents must remain on the lookout for this destructive pest. To learn more, click here.. Pest Identification. ...

In the previous post, I discussed the action of certain compounds in wild berries that may offer protection against diabetes. The 7th Annual Mt Holly Ski and Snowboard Competition is scheduled on Canyon. The date has been set and the Canyon Arena is a work in progress. Then we will take the best 3 people from each bracket and allow them an additional 15 minute session to crown the victor of each division..
