Extensive research on the presence of veterinary drug residues in food samples has been conducted and is still underway. The inappropriate or excessive use of veterinary drugs in food producing animals may result in trace quantities of these drugs or their metabolites in food samples. Food contamination by veterinary drug residues is one of the main challenges worldwide to public health with drug resistance being the biggest threat. One of the challenges in veterinary drug residue analysis is their occurrence in trace amounts that are normally below limits of detection of most analytical instruments. Various efficient, economical, miniaturized and environmentally friendly extraction methods have been developed in recent years to pre-concentrate these analytes before instrumental analysis to enhance their detection and also to overcome the limitations of traditional extraction methods such as liquid-liquid extraction and solid phase extraction. These methods include quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged

The report summarises the data collected from the monitoring on the presence of residues of veterinary medicinal products and certain substances in live animals and animal products in the European Union, in 2011. Altogether, 742,902 samples were reported to the European Commission. They included 415,909 targeted samples and 23,236 suspect samples reported under Council Directive 96/23/EC, 4,329 samples checked at import and 299,428 samples collected in the framework of programmes developed under the national legislation. The minimum requirements for sampling frequency laid down in Council Directive 96/23/EC and in Commission Decision 97/747/EC were fulfilled by the vast majority of Member States. The percentage of non-compliant targeted samples (0.28 %) was slightly lower compared to the previous four years (0.32 % - 0.34 %). The difference was triggered by the lower frequency of non-compliant samples for steroids, resorcyclic acid lactones, prohibited substances, antimicrobials, anthelmintics ...

The Veterinary Drugs Project is a complete research and development method designed to quantify a suite of veterinary drugs added to seafood feed which can be harmful to humans. Examples of these drugs are chloramphenicol, enrofloxicin, ciprofloxacin and sulfa antibiotics.. The method consists of a straightforward extraction followed by instrument analysis on a liquid chromatograph time-of-flight mass spectrometer (LC/TOF MS). The instrument can measure very low levels (ppb) due to its sensitivity. Chloramphenicol is presently analyzed in parts per billion (ppb) on the LC/TOF MS as a confirmatory method to NSILs ELISA protocol using an immunoassay (ELISA) kit measured in parts per trillion (ppt). Data gathering and comparative analysis is in process using the two methods.. ...

Baynes et al report that risk assessment and regulation of veterinary drug residues in animal-derived food commodities, such as muscle, liver, kidney, fat, milk, and eggs, follow similar principles throughout the world. In the United States of America (USA), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is the regulatory body that sets maximum permitted concentrations for veterinary drug residues, known as tolerances.. In the European Union (EU), the equivalent regulatory body is the European Medicines Agency (EMA), which publishes maximum residue limits (MRLs) that have been set by the Committee for Medicinal Products for Veterinary Use (CVMP). There are also independent risk assessment bodies, such as the Joint Food and Agricultural Organization/World Health Organization Expert Committee on Food Additives, (JECFA) which also recommends MRLs. JECFA advises the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC), which as risk manager, determines whether or not to establish international standards for residues of ...

1. Being kindly invited to attend a regional workshop on effectiveness of legislation and on international judicial cooperation, within the [email protected] Project (Istanbul, 10-12 April 2013), I had the privilege to join an interesting exercise regarding practical aspects of fighting cybercrime. States from Southern Europe discussed their legislations and the way they face, in the real life, criminal investigations and international cooperation on cybercrime. It was an interesting exercise because it was detected that good part of the noise, creating difficulties in concrete cybercrime investigations and jeopardising international cooperation efforts, would be avoid if some small problems were fixed - for example, some small alterations were introduced in details of the national legal frameworks and in some routines.. 2. The first topic was the effectiveness of legislation. The aim of the meeting was to detect if the represented States have an updated legislation on cybercrime and digital ...

Substandard drugs have long been a major human health problem in developing countries, and similar issues also beset the veterinary drug industry. Although less immediately costly to human life, the failure of veterinary treatment can be devastating for pastoralist livelihoods. Research on this problem has tended to be scientific, focussing on the prevalence and potential consequences of poor-quality products. In contrast, the social processes by which such products are traded and used have received far less scholarly attention. This study takes the case of animal African trypanosomiasis, one of Africas most important cattle diseases, and uses interviews and focus groups to follow drugs as they pass through the supply chain from importers and distributors to vendors and customers. Each set of actors uses different strategies to mitigate the risks of substandard drugs. For instance, pastoralists experiment carefully with suspect products before using them across their herds, whilst drug vendors and

Background: Closantel is a veterinary drug used as anthelmintic for ruminants while it is contraindicated for humans. This report describes a rare case of blindness, increased liver enzymes and coagulopathy following closantel poisoning. Case report: A 5-year-old girl was presented with acute blindness following closantel poisoning. She was given mistakenly a dose of 500 mg/day (25mg/kg/day) for 8 days. Clinical examination revealed a well-appearing child with bilateral mydriasis, loss of pupillary light reflex and absence of blinking to threat. Fundoscopic exam revealed bilateral pre-atrophic papilledema. Electroretinogram showed a highly significant decrease in retinal activity. Laboratory examinations revealed 52% increase in prothrombin time, prolongation of activated partial thromboplastin time to 1.3 times the normal and rise of aspartate aminotransferase to 120 IU/L. In addition, creatine kinase peaked at 904 IU/L. Moreover, normocytic normochromic anemia with hemoglobin at 10.7 mg/L and

The FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) tested almost 2,000 raw milk samples and found veterinary drug residues in just 0.78% of them, according to a report this month. Avoid raw milk FSAI said that while on- farm hygiene and animal health have improved over recent years, farms remain a significant reservoir for pathogens. Dr Wayne Anderson, director of food science and standards at FSAI, said almost all milk on sale in Ireland is pasteurized, which is the simplest and most reliable method to ensure it is safe to drink ...
Under the EU Directive 2004/28/EC, an environmental risk assessment of new veterinary medicinal products is required. Given the nature of risk assessment for new applications, there is a need to model exposure concentrations. Critical evaluations are essential to ensure that the use of models by regulators does not result in the propagation of misleading information. The empirical validations of soil exposure models, previously discussed in this journal, indicate that it is impossible to analyse the contribution of every model parameter to the variability in the predictions. In particular, the prediction of the slurry concentration is challenged by uncertainties concerning dilution, mixing and dissipation of residues. Surface water and groundwater models generated highly deviating results compared to the field results, questioning the usefulness of the available screening models. Animal husbandry, slurry handling and environmental conditions throughout Europe are considered in order to define ...
