Frequent exposures to hazy skies containing tiny airborne pollutants that are damaging to our lungs, have been incurred by millions of Australians, and also by many New Zealanders due to drift across the Tasman. Smoke from the Australian fires has also travelled to Argentina and across to the Atlantic, a stark reminder of how climatic events in one part of the world can have significant impacts on those living in completely different continents.. In addition to mucilaginous (polysaccharide hydrocolloid rich) and expectorant herbs such as Marshmallow (Althaea officinalis), Mullein (Verbascum thapsus) and the New Zealand native Hoheria (Hoheria populnea), evidence suggests that other herbal medicines can be beneficial for those forced to live or work in environments where exposure to smoke or fine-particulate matter containing and toxic haze from bush or forest fires, is unavoidable. At the upper part of the drift line, only annual halo-nitrophilous species survive, like Cakile maritima and Polygonum maritimum. Immediately behind this, the sand dune ecosystem begins, with the first line of moving dunes. Here, the sand stabilizers, specialized plants that ancor the sand, form embryonic dunes, like the sand couch grass (Elytrigia juncea), or larger white dunes, like marram grass (Ammophila arenaria), which occurs only at the extended beach of Laganas. Other ammophilous species occuring on Zakynthos dunes are Cyperus capitatus, Echinophora spinosa, the sea lily (Pancratium maritimum) and the sea holly (Eryngium maritimum). Behind the moving dunes, the fixed grey dunes are formed, with small bushes such as Helianthemum nummularium and the thyme (Coridothymus capitatus) at Laganas or with perennial herbs like Verbascum sinuatum and Centaurea seridis subsp. sonchifolia at Marathonisi. At more humid sites, especially at wet dune slacks, there are hydrophilous species such as ...

The volatile constituents of the essential oils from the flower, leaf, and stem of Paeonia daurica Andrews were analyzed by GC and GC-MS. A total of 74 compounds were identified, constituting over 95.0%, 80.8%, and 98.2% of the oil composition of the flower, leaf, and stem of P. daurica, respectively. Aldehydes were shown to be the main group of constituents of the flower and stem parts, at 39.1% and 79.8%, respectively. However, the major group in the leaf oil was found to be oxygenated monoterpenes (43.5%). Salicylaldehyde (20.7% and 79.5%) was the major component of the flower and stem oils of P. daurica, respectively. Linalool (31.4%) was the main compound of the leaf oil. The antimicrobial activity of the isolated essential oils of the plant was also investigated, and they showed moderate antibacterial activity against tested microorganisms. ...

Ayurveda, Sanskrit for The Science of Life, is one of the worlds oldest recorded systems of natural health preserved through the ages on scrolls and manuscripts. The Ayurvedic view of physical and mental well-being - a healthy way of living, has experienced a renewed interest as people take a proactive approach to their personal health. Natures Sunshine authentic formula, developed with herbs direct from India, is true to the Ayurvedic philosophy of restoring balance to the body. The respiratory system regularly encounters airborne particles such as microorganisms, pollutants, pollens and dust, and it protects delicate body tissues. As a result, the functions of the lungs and bronchi can be affected. This Ayurvedic formula uses herbs traditionally used for respiratory system support ...

This is well defined group of spices which are used universally in food seasoning to add bite or piquancy to the end product. In the case of pepper and ginger this pungent effect is accompanied by a quite characteristic flavor due to nonpungent aromatic components present in the essential oil of these spices, the familiar bite and flavor of mustard, on the other hand, is due to a very volatile constituent which largely constitutes so-called oil of mustard ...

Vascular phloem loading has long been recognized as an essential step in the establishment of a systemic virus infection. Yet little is known about this process and the mechanisms that control it. In this study, an interaction between the replication protein of Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) and phloem specific auxin/indole acetic acid (Aux/IAA) transcriptional regulators was found to modulate virus phloem loading. Promoter expression studies show TMV 126/183 kDa interacting Aux/IAAs predominantly express and accumulate within the nuclei of phloem companion cells (CC). Furthermore, CC Aux/IAA nuclear localization is disrupted upon infection with an interacting virus but not during infection with a non-interacting virus. In situ analysis of virus spread shows the inability of TMV variants to disrupt Aux/IAA CC nuclear localization correlates with a reduced ability to load into the vascular tissue. Subsequent systemic movement assays also demonstrate that a virus capable of disrupting Aux/IAA ...

As the test item is a mixture of several components, upper and lower limits of log Kow were determined using the HPLC method. Log Kow (Pow) for Oxooel LS9 was measured to be 5.4 to 6.2 at 26 degrees C. However, it is not clear from the study report, if the volatility of the substance was taken into consideration, therefore, the reliability of the measured data is questionable. The contribution to the overall log Kow of the less volatile constituents, which are also more lipophilic, is probably overestimated in this experimental setting. In addition, no compound specific analytics were performed. Thus, a calculation of the weighted mean log Kow based on QSAR (EpiSuite v4.11, US EPA, 2012, KOWWIN v1.68) was performed, which is used as key value for chemical safety assessment: The weighted mean log Kow of Oxooel LS9 was estimated to be 4.17. ...
