Title:Auditory Verbal Learning Test is Superior to Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure Memory for Predicting Mild Cognitive Impairment to Alzheimers Disease. VOLUME: 12 ISSUE: 6. Author(s):Qianhua Zhao, Qihao Guo, Xiaoniu Liang, Meirong Chen, Yan Zhou, Ding Ding and Zhen Hong. Affiliation:No. 12 Wulumuqi Rd(M), Shanghai, China, 200040.. Keywords:Alzheimers disease, auditory verbal learning test, mild cognitive impairment, operational criteria, Rey-Osterrieth complex figure test, subjective cognitive decline.. Abstract:Objective: To carry out meaningful comparisons on results of different research studies on mild cognitive impairment (MCI), it is critical to select an appropriate objective memory test to examine memory deficit. We aim to refine the operational criteria of amnestic MCI (aMCI) on neuropsychological tests that optimally balance the sensitivity and specificity. Methods: We focused on 206 non-demented subjects from memory clinic. We then classified each individual as having MCI or ...

Objective: To compare the memory effects of continuation electroconvulsive therapy (C-ECT) versus continuation pharmacologic intervention (C-PHARM) at 12 and 24 weeks after completion of acute electroconvulsive therapy (ECT).. Method: Eighty-five patients with Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV-diagnosed unipolar major depressive disorder, enrolled in a multisite, randomized, parallel-design trial conducted at 5 academic medical centers from 1997 to 2004, who had remitted with an acute course of bilateral ECT and remained unrelapsed through 24 weeks of continuation therapy, were included in this analysis. They were randomly assigned to C-ECT (10 treatments) or nortriptyline plus lithium (monitored by serum blood levels) for 24 weeks. Objective neuropsychological measures of retrograde and anterograde memory and subjective assessment of memory were obtained at baseline, 12 weeks, and 24 weeks. The Rey Auditory-Verbal Learning Test and the Autobiographical Memory Interview were the primary ...

Personality traits of impulsivity will be measured with the Barrett Impulsiveness Scale and the NEO Personality Inventory-Revised. Behavioral components of impulsivity will be tested through delay and probability discounting tasks. Finally, measures of frontotemporal functioning are also included in a neuropsychology and neurocognitive battery. Recent studies have shown that these areas of the brain function differently in pathological gamblers; thus, the following neuropsychology/neurocognitive tests have been included: Attention/Information Processing Speed (via Simple Reaction Time Task and Continuous Performance Task), Episodic Memory (via Hopkins Verbal Learning Test-Revised and Brief Visuospatial Memory Test), Executive/Frontal Lobe Measures (via Wechsler Memory Scale-III, Choice Reaction Time Task, Working Memory Task (N-back), Probabilistic Reversal Learning Task, and Stop-Signal Task). Between group comparisons on this battery of impulsivity tests will be made to clarify which ...

The NTB is a composite of nine widely used neuropsychological tests that assess immediate and delayed recall of verbal and visual information, attention, verbal fluency and executive function. The cognitive tests included in the NTB are the Wechsler Memory Scale (WMS) Visual-Paired Associates (immediate and delayed), WMS-Verbal Paired Associates (immediate and delayed), Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test (immediate and delayed), WMS-Digit Span, Controlled Word Association Test, and Category Fluency Test. The NTB z-score is used for analysis. The z-score for each component is calculated through the following formula: z = (y_visit - y_base)/SD_base, where y_visit is a value at a particular time point and y_base is the average test score, and SD_base is the SD based on all participants observed baseline scores in the study ...
The current study investigated the extent to which neuropsychological and functional outcome after complicated mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI) parallels that of moderate traumatic brain injury (TBI) recovery. A longitudinal design was employed to compare the neuropsychological and functional status of individuals with complicated MTBI and moderate TBI at discharge from inpatient rehabilitation and at 1-year postinjury. The complicated MTBI group was comprised of 102 participants, each with an intracranial brain lesion documented via neuroimaging and a highest Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score in the Emergency Department between 13 and 15. The moderate TBI group was comprised of 127 participants, each with a highest GCS score in the Emergency Department between 9 and 12. The outcome measures of interest included the Functional Independence Measure, Disability Rating Scale, Community Integration Questionnaire, Logical Memory Test I and II, Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test, Trail Making Test (A and B),

In a counterbalanced design, we presented novel verbal material (short narrative stories) in both spoken and sung formats to stroke patients at the acute poststroke stage and 6 months poststroke. The task comprised three learning trials and a delayed recall trial. Memory performance on the spoken and sung tasks did not differ at the acute stage, whereas sung stories were learned and recalled significantly better compared with spoken stories at the 6 months poststroke stage. Interestingly, this pattern of results was evident ...

The seven year study observed 58 patients presenting with one to three newly diagnosed brain metastases who were randomized to receive SRS followed by WBRT or SRS alone. Approximately four months after treatment, 49 percent of patients who received WBRT experienced a decline in learning and memory function compared to 23 percent in those patients who received SRS alone. An independent data monitoring committee halted the trial after interim results showed the high statistical probability (96.4 percent) that patients randomized to SRS alone would continue to perform better.. M. D. Anderson researchers measured participants neurocognitive function using a short battery of neuropsychological tests, with the primary endpoint being memory function as tested by the Hopkins Verbal Learning Test Revised. Patient performance that decreased more than a predefined criteria relative to their baseline were considered to exhibit a marked decline. This is a case where the risks of learning dysfunction ...
Methods Participants were recruited from the predictive testing program for HD at Karolinska University Hospital, Sweden. Artificial lexicons have previously been used to examine the time course of the learning and recognition of spoken words, the role of segment type in word learning, and the integration of context during spoken word recognition. However, in all of these studies the experimenter determined the frequency and order of the words to be learned. In three experiments, we asked whether adult learners choose to listen to novel words in a particular order based on their acoustic similarity. We use a new paradigm for learning an artificial lexicon in which the learner, rather than the experimenter, determines the order and frequency of exposure to items. We analyze both the proportions of selections and the temporal clustering of subjects sampling of lexical neighborhoods during training as well as their performance during repeated testing phases (accuracy and reaction time) to determine the time course of learning these neighborhoods. In the first experiment, subjects sampled the high and low density ...

Rey and BB-8’s trek across Jakku was one of the early highlights of Star Wars: The Force Awakens - and it could have been even better. Disney’s new Star Wars: Forces of Destiny animation short fills in parts of the pair’s perilous journey. The episode, titled Sands of Jakku, may not have top-tier animation, but it’s a neat little romp. And, hey, Daisy Ridley even returns to voice Rey, which is nice.Things take a turn for the worst though when a Nightwatcher Worm tracks down the droid – it’s got a taste for junk, you see – and Rey has to do her level best to stop BB-8 turning into worm food. What follows is a taster of Rey’s Force potential – either that or she’s a ridiculously good shot with her staff – as she does battle with the worm to keep its jaws from slobbering all over BB-8.All in all, it’s a cool interlude to something that was somewhat skipped over in the movie… assuming it’s canon. Why are the childrens brains so different when it comes to language learning? Because children are not just smaller adults, they are different in most aspects. The first few years are critical for the brain development, there are processes that slow down and stop and never get activated again. The cortex plasticity is immense, there are still new neurons being created very early in the childhood (the only such reproduction and differentiation of neurons in adults happens in the hippocampal area and only in very limited amounts, according to todays science), the chemical coctail of mediators, neuromodulators, growth factors, hormones and all that stuff is different from that of an adult. There is more than just one borderline and various authors do not agree entirely on them. The first, most important and most widely acknowledged critical age comes around 3 years of postnatal life. Damage to brain development done to such a small child is very likely to leave huge consequences. Children who had ...
The abbreviated Life Skills Profile (LSP-16) contains 16 items which provide a key measure of function and disability in people with mental illness. The focus of LSP-16 is on the persons general functioning, i.e. how the person functions in terms of their social relationships, ability to do day-to-day tasks etc. Each of the 16 items is scored on a four point scale of 0 to 3. Lower scores indicate a higher level of functioning.. The 16 items are in the form of questions:. 1 Does this person generally have any difficulty with initiating and responding to conversation?. 2 Does this person generally withdraw from social contact?. 3 Does this person generally show warmth to others?. 4 Is this person generally well groomed (e.g. neatly dressed, hair combed)? 6 Does this person generally neglect her or his physical health?. 7 Is this person violent to others?. 8 Does this person generally make and/or keep up friendships?. 9 Does this person generally maintain an adequate diet?. 10 Does this person ...

Previous studies evidenced transfer effects from professional music training to novel word learning. However, it is unclear whether such an advantage is driven by cascading, bottom-up effects from better auditory perception to semantic processing or by topdown influences from cognitive functions on perception. Moreover, the long-term effects of novel word learning remain an open issue. To address these questions, we used a word learning design, with four different sets of novel words, and we neutralized the potential perceptive and associative learning advantages in musicians. Under such conditions, we did not observe any advantage in musicians on the day of learning (Day 1 [D1]), at neither a behavioral nor an electrophysiological level; this suggests that the previously reported advantages in musicians are likely to be related to bottom-up processes. Nevertheless, 1 month later (Day 30 [D30]) and for all types of novel words, the error increase from D1 to D30 was lower in musicians compared to ...
Individuals given a series of words to memorize normally show better immediate recall for items from the beginning and end of the list than for midlist items. This phenomenon, known as the serial position effect, is thought to reflect the concurrent contributions of secondary and primary memory, respectively, to recall performance. The present study compared the serial position effects produced on Trial 1 of the California Verbal Learning Test (CVLT) in mildly demented (N = 25; M MMSE = 20.0) and very mildly demented (N = 25; M MMSE = 25.5) patients with Alzheimers disease (AD), and age- and education-matched normal control (NC) participants (N = 50). In addition, the serial position effects of the very mildly demented AD patients were compared to those of patients with a transient, circumscribed amnesia arising from a prescribed series of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) treatments for the relief of depressive illness (N = 11). While the NC group exhibited the typical serial position effect, AD ...
New research published in the European Journal of Nutrition found that daily consumption of the equivalent of one cup of fresh blueberries, given as 24 g of freeze dried powder, showed positive changes in cognitive function over a placebo. The research, Dietary blueberry improves cognition among older adults in a randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled trial, was conducted at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University.. Conducted over a 90-day period, 13 healthy men and 24 healthy women between the ages of 60 and 75 were randomly assigned to receive either freeze-dried Highbush blueberry powder daily (the equivalent to one cup of fresh blueberries) or a placebo powder. The subjects were tested for balance, gait and cognition at baseline, and again at 45 and 90 days.. The results found that the blueberry-supplemented group showed significantly fewer repetition errors compared to the placebo group in the California Verbal Learning Test (CLVT),a ...
Non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) are techniques widely employed in the last decades to the study of physiology of cognitive processes, and bring the promise of being a complementary therapeutic intervention to neuropsychiatric disorders. In this doctoral dissertation, I attempted to advance in methodologically rigorous protocols to influence normal brain physiology and search for solutions to modulate memory activity, targeting different anatomical nodes of the verbal episodic memory network with transcranial electrical stimulation (tDCS, TACS). In the first study, I aimed to modulate memory performance by applying a focal multi-electrode tDCS targeting primarily the dorso-lateral pre-frontal cortex (DLPFC). In the second study, the target was moved to the left temporal cortex, aiming to interfere and manipulate with the temporal characteristics of the encoding process by the application of tACS. ...
TY - JOUR. T1 - Exploring the within-person coupling of blood pressure and cognition in elders. AU - Gamaldo, Alyssa A.. AU - Weatherbee, Sarah R.. AU - Allaire, Jason C.. PY - 2008/1/1. Y1 - 2008/1/1. N2 - In this study, we examined the relationship between within-person blood pressure and cognitive functioning. We conducted an analysis on 36 community-dwelling elderly individuals (age range = 60-87 years). Participants measured their blood pressure and completed cognitive tasks (i.e., the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Task, the Letter Series test, and the Number Comparison test) twice a day over 60 consecutive days. We observed a significant interaction between within-person change in blood pressure and average blood pressure for the Letter Series test. Individuals with high blood pressure tended to perform poorly, particularly on occasions when their blood pressure level was above their personal average. These results demonstrate that the relationship between blood pressure and cognition at ...
From the word knowledge assessment viewpoint, Study 2 explored the viability of tablets in assessing early word comprehension among 1-year-olds by means of a two-alternative forced choice word recognition task. Preliminary results indicated that children as young as 18 months can engage meaningfully with a tablet-based assessment, with minimal verbal instruction and child-administrator interaction. The encouraging results further suggest that such assessments have scope for deriving a direct measure of early word comprehension that can supplement parent reports, such as the MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventories (CDI), thereby addressing concerns relating to the exclusive use of parent reports and allowing a more complete picture of childrens early language development. In order to facilitate the assessment of early word knowledge, Study 3 sought to develop a language-general approach that produces adaptive short-form versions of CDIs with test items that are maximally ...
BACKGROUND: Patients with depression show abnormalities in the neural circuitry supporting working memory. These abnormalities apparently persist into clinical remission, raising the possibility that they might be trait markers indicating vulnerability to depression. METHODS: We studied 17 young people who had a depressed parent but no personal history of depressive illness (FH) and 15 healthy control subjects with no family history of depression. Participants performed a verbal working memory task of varying cognitive load (n-back) while undergoing functional magnetic resonance imaging scanning. We used multiple regression analyses to assess overall capacity (1-, 2-, 3-back vs. 0-back) as well as linear and quadratic modulation of cognitive demand. RESULTS: Performance accuracy and response latency did not differ between groups, and overall capacity was similar. However, for both linear and quadratic load response activity, FH participants showed greater activation in lateral occipital cortex, superior

The present study is one of few studies of normal aging where image-derived hippocampal volumes, APOE genotype, and verbal memory performance have been jointly investigated. In our investigation we also included other variables (e.g. age, gender, hippocampus laterality index) that could be important a priori for prediction of verbal memory performance (i.e. CVLT-LD score). Applying the conditional inference model to our multivariate sample, we expected to reveal the sequential importance for each variable in predicting CVLT-LD.. Investigating our results (Figure 6a) we see that gender is the one variable that best predicts CVLT-LD in our sample. This is in concordance with findings in other studies of verbal memory function among elderly normals [52, 53], where women in general, outperform men [1, 52]. For men, there were no other variables that could be used to reject the null-hypothesis of there being no relationship between variable and response. For women however, age provided another node ...

Cross-situational learning is a mechanism for learning the meaning of words across multiple exposures, despite exposure-by-exposure uncertainty as to the words true meaning. We present experimental evidence showing that humans learn words effectively using cross-situational learning, even at high levels of referential uncertainty. Both overall success rates and the time taken to learn words are affected by the degree of referential uncertainty, with greater referential uncertainty leading to less reliable, slower learning. Words are also learned less successfully and more slowly if they are presented interleaved with occurrences of other words, although this effect is relatively weak. We present additional analyses of participants trial-by-trial behavior showing that participants make use of various cross-situational learning strategies, depending on the difficulty of the word-learning task. When referential uncertainty is low, participants generally apply a rigorous eliminative approach to ...
BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder (BD) has been associated with dysfunctional resting-state brain functioning.
