A clinical, parasitologic, and serologic study carried out between 1988 and 1996 on 59 acute-phase patients in areas of western Venezuela where Chagas' disease is endemic showed 19 symptomatic patterns or groups of symptoms appearing in combination with different frequencies. The symptomatic pattern with the highest frequency was that showing simultaneously fever, myalgia, headache, and Romaña's sign, which was detected in 20% of the acute-phase patients. Asymptomatic individuals and patients with fever as the only sign of the disease made up 15% and 11.9% of the total acute cases, respectively. Statistical correlation analysis revealed that xenodiagnosis and hemoculture were the most reliable and concordant of the five parasitologic methods used; these two methods also showed the highest proportions in detecting any clinical symptomatic pattern in acute-phase patients. A similar high reliability and concordance was obtained with a direct agglutination test, an indirect immunofluorescent

The blast, which took place Saturday in the 640,000 bpd Amuay refinery in western Venezuela, killed at least 41 people and destroyed storage tanks and hundreds of nearby homes. Government officials said Sunday the refinery can be restarted in two days once the blaze is extinguished, but on Monday the fire still raged. Analysts with Tudor, Pickering, Holt & Co. said in a research note that the governments assessment is at a minimum too early to be fully relied upon. The analysts said that an outage could help lift US Gulf Coast refining margins. The region s refiners have been increasing output in recent quarters to offset lower volumes coming from Venezuelas refineries, which have been hobbled by maintenance issues. The oil-rich nation is also sending more of its supplies to allies in Latin America and China. The US Energy Information Administration said that Venezuela accounted for just 1.8% of US petroleum-product imports last May, far below the recent peak of 11% in March 2006. Since then, ...
The Demographics of Venezuela are the condition and overview of Venezuelas peoples. Demographic topics include basic education, health, and population statistics as well as identified racial and religious affiliations The Venezuelan people comprise a combination of heritages. The historically present Amerindians, Spanish colonists, and African slaves have all contributed to varying degrees. Later, waves of European groups (Italians, Portuguese and Germans) migrated to Venezuela in the 20th century, influencing many aspects of Venezuelan life, including its culture, language, food, and music. About 51.6% of the population is Mestizos and Mulattos in Venezuela, while 43.6% are white of European ancestry and/or Middle Eastern ancestry. Another 3.7% is fully black/African, while 2.7% is of full Amerindian ancestry, and 1.0% other races ( principally Asian people).[1][2] Three Amerindian tribes located in the country are the Wayuu, located in the west, in Zulia State, and the Timoto-cuicas, also in ...
Journalist Glenn Greenwald says the United States has again stepped over the line in spying on Venezuela, violating their sovereignty.. Newly revealed U.S. espionage against Venezuelan state oil firm PDVSA violated the South American nations sovereignty, journalist Glenn Greenwald said Wednesday, adding that Washington is determined to take control of Venezuelas resources.. Speaking to teleSUR, Greenwald slammed the espionage as an invasion of Venezuelas rights. However, he also pointed out Venezuelans arent the only ones impacted by Washingtons spying, arguing U.S. citizens themselves have lost much of their privacy online.. He continued by stating revelations of U.S. spying showed Washington is determined to take control of Venezuelas oil resources.. Greenwald currently works with The Intercept.. In a joint investigation, teleSUR and The Intercept revealed earlier Wednesday the U.S. National Security Agency had infiltrated PDVSAs internal communications network, and was spying on top ...
And so, the Venezuelan government controls water and electricity. Despite all that government oversight, regrettably, the people of Venezuela often find themselves in the dark because according to César Batiz in an article in the Americas Quarterly, since the nation nationalized the electrical grid, the "government has failed to build enough new power plants and to maintain existing ones.". Although America is approximately 1,500 miles away from Venezuela, that sounds similar to how the hospital and doctor shortage is shaping up since ObamaCare became law.. As for public health services, Venezuela has high instances of Dengue fever, especially in areas that lack the potable water and trash collection. Although Chávez said that water is a human right and that the water supply is best overseen by the régime, there are water shortages and rationing.. And just as all these other human rights have turned out in Venezuela, so too is the non-privatized fundamental human right of government-provided ...
En Español Reuters. Reuters. U.S. prosecutors are preparing to unveil drug trafficking charges against the head of Venezuelas National Guard, according to people familiar with the case, as the United States investigates the suspected involvement of senior Venezuelan officials in the cocaine trade.. Nestor Reverol, the former head of Venezuelas anti-narcotics agency and a long-time ally of late socialist leader Hugo Chavez, is named in a sealed indictment pending in federal court in Brooklyn, New York, according to the people.. He would be one of the highest-ranking Venezuelan officials - and the only one currently in office - to face U.S. drug charges.. Reverol, who leads the branch of Venezuelas armed forces that controls the countrys borders, could not be reached for comment by Reuters.. In recent years, he has rejected U.S. accusations that Venezuela has failed to curb illicit drug shipments and has touted the governments success in cracking down on the flow of cocaine from neighboring ...
An indictment was unsealed today in United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York charging Nestor Luis Reverol Torres, the former General Director of Venezuelas La Oficina Nacional Antidrogas (ONA) and former commander of Venezuelas National Guard, and Edylberto Jose Molina Molina, the former Sub-Director of ONA and currently Venezuelas military attaché to Germany, with participating in an international cocaine distribution conspiracy.[1] The indictment was returned under seal by a federal grand jury in Brooklyn, New York, on January 21, 2015, and relates to Reverols and Molinas alleged activities from January 2008 to December 2010, when they served as the top officials for ONA, Venezuelas government agency charged with combating narcotics trafficking.. The indictment was announced by Robert L. Capers, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York; James J. Hunt, Special Agent-in-Charge, Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), New York Division; and Angel ...
Given the level to which the GNB controls Venezuelas airports and the huge amount of cocaine loaded onto the flight, its hard to imagine that the highest ranking military officers involved in the Air France bust were canine handlers and X-ray operators.. "This was the most audacious [smuggling operation] in Venezuelas history," Javier Mayorca, a Venezuelan journalist who investigated the case, told InSight Crime in 2013. "And it is absolutely unthinkable, impossible, that it was carried out without [military] cooperation at the very highest levels." (Mayorca is now a contributor to InSight Crime.) Indeed, the Air France case became emblematic of the extent to which Venezuelas military has deepened its involvement in drug trafficking. Cells of corrupt military officials, known collectively as the "Cartel of the Suns," are believed to have strong links to Venezuelas cocaine trade, and the airports have become one of the principal dispatch points for drug shipments. The headline of a September ...
BOLIVARIAN REPUBLIC OF VENEZUELA. The Constitution of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela was drafted in mid-1999 by a constitutional assembly that was created by popular referendum. This 1999 Constitution was adopted in December 1999, replacing the 1961 Constitution. It was primarily promoted by the current President of Venezuela Hugo Chávez and thereafter received strong backing from diverse sectors, including figures involved in promulgating the 1961 constitution such as Luis Miquilena and Carlos Andrés Pérez. This constitution is referred to as the "Constitución Bolivariana" (the "Bolivarian Constitution") because it is descended ideologically from the thinking and political philosophy of Simón Bolívar and Bolivarianism.. The Constitution of 1999 was the first constitution ever approved by popular referendum in Venezuelan history, and summarily inaugurated the "Fifth Republic" of Venezuela due to the socioeconomic changes foretold in its pages, as well as the official change in ...
book collector, historian, and journalist, was born in Philadelphia to George Bolivar, and Elizabeth LeCount Proctor Bolivar. There is some uncertainty about his precise year of birth, with historians suggesting 1844 (Silcox) or 1849 (Welborn), while census data inclines toward an 1847 date. His father was employed as a sailmaker by James Forten, a local businessman and founder of the Philadelphia Library Company of Colored Persons.. The family numbered themselves among the "O.P."-Old Philadelphians-of the African American community. George Bolivar had been born in Philadelphia, to a Pennsylvania-born mother and a father from North Carolina. Elizabeth Bolivar was born in Pennsylvania to parents born in Maryland (1850 census). In 1850George Bolivar owned real estate valued at $8,000, while a North Carolina-born cousin, Nicholas Bolivar, lived with the family, working as a tailor. The Yanomami. The Yanomami are one of the largest relatively isolated tribes in South America. They live in the rainforests and mountains of northern Brazil and southern Venezuela, and today their total population stands at around 32,000. At over 9.6 million hectares, the Yanomami territory in Brazil is twice the size of Switzerland. In Venezuela, the Yanomami live in the 8.2 million hectare Alto Orinoco - Casiquiare Biosphere Reserve. Together, these areas form the largest forested indigenous territory in the world.. The Yanomami live in large, circular, communal houses called yanos or shabonos. Some house up to 400 people. The Yanomami believe strongly in equality among people. Each community is independent from others and they do not recognize chiefs. Decisions are made by consensus, frequently after long debates where everybody has a say.. Like most Amazonian tribes, tasks are divided between the sexes. Men hunt game, often using curare (a plant extract) to poison their prey. Women tend ...
As the worlds fifth largest oil exporter and a state with abundant hydroelectric resources, it is unlikely that Venezuela will require nuclear power to meet its energy needs. Additionally, until recently, open source evidence had not suggested that Venezuela might be considering pursuing nuclear weapons. The country has only one nuclear facility, very minimal nuclear expertise, and is a member of the major nuclear nonproliferation agreements and regimes. [2] Caracas became a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in August 1957, after purchasing a 3 MW research reactor from the U.S. General Electric Company in 1956. The reactor, which went critical in July 1960, was operated by the Instituto Venezolano de Investigaciones (IVIC) under IAEA safeguards, and was officially shut down in January 1994. [3] Reportedly, the reactor site is now used for food processing irradiation, medical sterilization and research. [4]. In February 1967, Venezuela signed the Tlatelolco Treaty, ...
Govt supporters storm Venezuela congress, injuring lawmakers. CARACAS, Venezuela - Pro-government militias wielding wooden sticks and metal bars stormed congress on Wednesday and attacked opposition lawmakers during a special session coinciding with Venezuelas independence day.. Four lawmakers were injured and blood was splattered on the neoclassical legislatures white walls. One of them, Americo de Grazia, had to be taken in a stretcher to an ambulance suffering from convulsions, said a fellow congressman.. "This doesnt hurt as much as watching how every day how we lose a little bit more of our country," Armando Arias said from inside an ambulance as he was being treated for head wounds that spilled blood across his clothes.. The attack, in plain view of national guardsmen assigned to protect the legislature, comes amid three months of often-violent confrontations between security forces and protesters who accuse the government of trying to establish a dictatorship by jailing foes, pushing ...
Merida, May 8, 2019 (venezuelanalysis.com) - Venezuelas National Constituent Assembly (ANC) has revoked the parliamentary immunity of seven opposition deputies, opening the way for criminal prosecution for their purported role in last weeks failed coup detat.. The deputies, who sit in the countrys National Assembly (AN) since 2015, are being accused of treason, conspiracy, civil rebellion, usurpation of responsibilities, criminal association, public instigation to disobey the laws, and "continued hatred" by Venezuelas Supreme Court, following a ruling on Tuesday. The ruling was based on articles 128, 132, 143, 145, 163, 213 and 285 of Venezuelas Criminal Code, as well as article 37 of the Law against Organised Crime and Terrorist Financing.. The decision to lift their immunity was taken by the ANC following a request from the Court. Only 700,000 tonnes of yellow maize, a basic animal feedstuff, is expected this harvest, half a million tonnes less than last year. Another agribusiness leader, Antonio Pestana, said the rice harvest would yield between 3,500 and 4,000 kg per hectare, while last year the average for the country was 4,500 kg per hectare.. "Low yields are also being seen in crops like coffee, in the Andean highlands of Venezuela, Colombia and other countries in the region, because the coffee trees are flowering early and the developmental stages of the beans have been modified because of the drought," Eulogio Chacón, head of the Institute of Environmental and Ecological Sciences at the University of the Andes, in southwestern Venezuela, told IPS.. "Dropping their leaves and flowering is a response mechanism of plants to lack of water. In Venezuela, trees in our forests like the coral tree (Erythina poeppigiana), which usually flowers in April, this year can be found still flowering in October," Chacón ...

Opposition groups in Venezuela are currently engaged in a campaign to overthrow the democratically-elected government of President Nicolas Maduro. Portrayed by the media as a peaceful, democratic movement, it is clear that what Venezuela is experiencing is a right-wing destabilisation campaign that not only seeks to remove Maduro but to roll back the important gains of the countrys Bolivarian Revolution. Through campaigns of terror, assassinations, the burning alive of government supporters and attacks on government services and food distribution networks, the opposition hopes to topple the government as a first step to destroying Chavismo. Over the past two decades, Venezuelas political landscape has been dramatically reshaped by the rise of Chavismo, a political movement of the countrys poor and working classes.

A community randomized controlled trial was carried out in an area of moderate malaria transmission in the Amazon region, in South East Venezuela, where the indigenous Yanomami population live. The aim of the project was to assess the impact of lambdacyhalothrin treated hammock nets (ITHNs), compared to placebo treated hammock nets (PTHNs), on the malaria incidence rate and on the malaria vector population Anopheles darlingi. In both arms of the study intensive early case detection was performed and prompt malaria treatment administered. Baseline data were collected one year before the intervention and a population of around 924 Yanomami was followed for two years. Despite the recent introduction of nets in the Yanomami villages and the adverse natural conditions in the area, the majority of Yanomami showed high compliance and took good care of the nets. Analysis performed by gas chromatography of samples taken from the nets dried in different ways, i. e. vertically or horizontally, in the sun ...

Abstract: The mutations in the CFTR gene found in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) have geographic differences, but there are scant data on their prevalence in Venezuelan patients. This study determined the frequency of common CFTR gene mutations in a group of Venezuelan patients with CF. The 27 exons of the CFTR gene from 110 Venezuelan patients in the National CF Program were amplified and sequenced. A total of 36 different mutations were
As in education, Venezuela had, by Latin American standards, an enviable record in health and social welfare and one that had shown tremendous progress. In 1940 the overall life expectancy at birth was forty-three years. By 1990, that figure was over seventy years: seventy-one years for males and seventy-seven for females, both among the highest in Latin America. The death rate was only 4 per 1,000 population and the average caloric intake was 107 percent of the minimum level established by the United Nations (UN) Food and Agriculture Organization. These indices reflected generally improving health conditions, especially since the end of World War II, and the increase in preventive public health measures undertaken by the government. For example, successful inoculation programs had lessened the incidence of a number of contagious diseases. On the other hand, a comparison between the causes of death in 1973 and 1981 shows that Venezuela, a rapidly industrializing country, was also becoming more ...
Historically Venezuela has been a path to the United States for illegal drugs originating in Colombia, through Central America and Mexico and Caribbean countries such as Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico. According to the United Nations, there has been an increase of cocaine trafficking through Venezuela since 2002.[98] In 2005 Venezuela severed ties with the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), accusing its representatives of spying.[99] Following the departure of the DEA from Venezuela and the expansion of DEAs partnership with Colombia in 2005, Venezuela became more attractive to drug traffickers.[100] Between 2008 and 2012, Venezuelas cocaine seizure ranking among other countries declined, going from being ranked fourth in the world for cocaine seizures in 2008[101] to sixth in the world in 2012.[102] The cartel groups involved include: ...

Established in 1948, General Motors Venezolana (GMV), the oldest and most traditional automaker in the country, and market leader for more than 35 consecutive years, is forced to cease operations in Venezuela due to an illegal judicial seizure of its assets.. Yesterday, GMVs plant was unexpectedly taken by the public authorities, preventing normal operations. In addition, other assets of the company, such as vehicles, have been illegally taken from its facilities.. The seizure was granted and enforced in total disregard of GMVs right to due process, causing irreparable damage to the company, its 2,678 workers, its 79 dealers (the countrys largest service network with more than 3,900 workers), and to its suppliers (representing more than 55% of the auto parts industry in Venezuela).. As a consequence, GMV announces the immediate cessation of its operations in the country, and ensures (as far as the authorities permit) payment of the employees separation benefits arising from the termination ...

It resembles C. xystercus Cressey and C. ocyurus Cressey, both known only from the Caribbean Sea. The new species can be distinguished from these and other congeners by a combination of characters including the armature of legs 1 and 4, but mainly by its unique female genital complex. This is the first species of Caligus described from Venezuela. The species is described in full and a key to the species of the genus recorded in Venezuela is provided.

President Trump has signed an Executive Order limiting the Venezuelan governments access to the U.S. financial system. The new sanctions are the latest in a quick succession of U.S. sanctions measures issued in response to the deteriorating political situation in Venezuela. Notably, while previous U.S. sanctions directives targeted specific Venezuelan individuals and entities only, the new sanctions, for the first time, target the Venezuelan government and the Venezuelan state oil company, Petróleos de Venezuela, S.A. (PDVSA).
