Risk assessment of postpartum uterine disease and consequences of puerperal metritis for subsequent metabolic status,...
The objective of this study was to determine some metabolic and other factors predicting the risk of postpartum uterine disease (PUD), and the effects of puerperal metritis (PM) on metabolic status, reproduction and milk yield were analysed. A total of 105 Holstein-Friesian cows were included, and sampled on day , −14 prepartum and days 4, 10-14, 28-35 and 56-63 postpartum for metabolic tests. From day 4 the development of PUD, and from days 28-35 the ovarian activity was monitored. When grade ≥ 1 + ketonuria was present on day 4 postpartum, this indicated a higher probability of PUD [odds ratio (OR) 2.64; P , 0.05] including PM occurring on days 10-14 (OR: 2.65; P , 0.05). Plasma nonesterified fatty acid (NEFA) concentrations , 0.200 mmol/l on days , −14 prepartum indicated a higher risk of uterine diseases (OR: 3.44; P , 0.05). The odds of PUD increased, depending on whether a body condition score (BCS) loss of ≥ 1.0 occurred between days , −14 and 28-35 (OR: 2.82; P , 0.05), between ...

UF/IFAS Researcher Aims to Improve Bacteria Treatments for Cows, Humans - UF/IFAS News
University of Florida scientists believe they can develop new antimicrobials that will benefit dairy cattle and, eventually, humans by treating bacteria that normally resist antibiotics.. Antibiotic-resistant bacteria take a serious toll on cattle and humans.. On the human side, at least 2 million people contract an antibiotic-resistant infection each year in the U.S., and at least 23,000 people die, according to a 2013 report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC hopes to release updated data this fall.. Then theres the damage to cattle. The uterine disease known as metritis costs U.S. dairy producers $600 million a year, said KC Jeong, an associate professor of animal sciences at the UF Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences.. Jeong thinks his new research can help. He plans to use a nearly $460,000 grant from the National Institute of Food and Agriculture to make cattle bacteria less resistant to antibiotics; therefore, more treatable. Humans also may benefit from ...

Intrauterine Adhesion Rate After Hysteroscopic Myomectomy and Application of HYALOBARRIER Gel - Full Text View - ClinicalTrials...
Hysteroscopic myomectomy is the referent surgical treatment for submucous myoma. But intrauterine adhesion rate was evaluated about 7 to 15% after this procedure. The investigators hypothetically believe that application of HYALOBARRIER Gel at the end of the procedure, could be reduce the mean intrauterine rate to 50%. Thus, the investigators performed a multicenter (n = 20) prospective study non randomized in 220 patients with submucous myoma , 3 cm of diameter, evaluated by preoperative ultrasound. The investigators prefer this study design, because the principal reason is the number of enrolled patient were more 200 patients in each group with a double blind randomized study. Now, in all patients, after hysteroscopic myomectomy which performed with a same technique in each center (bipolar coagulation and physiologic serum), a diagnostic hysteroscopy was performed at 2 month to determinate the existence of intrauterine adhesion. Secondary end points were in this study the tolerance and side ...
Uterine torsion in a Sprague Dawley rat (Rattus norvegicus)
ERLWANGER, K H; COSTELLO, M A and MEYER, L C R. Uterine torsion in a Sprague Dawley rat (Rattus norvegicus). J. S. Afr. Vet. Assoc. [online]. 2011, vol.82, n.3, pp.183-184. ISSN 2224-9435.. Uterine torsion is a twisting of the uterus or uterine horn perpendicular to its long axis. We report a case of uterine torsion in an adult breeding Sprague Dawley rat. The rat died a month after her last recorded delivery. Post mortem examination of the rat revealed 270º torsion of the right uterine horn. The uterus contained a single foetus. The liver was pale and enlarged. The rest of the viscera appeared normal. Histopathological examination showed acute hepatic necrosis and pulmonary congestion with mild lymphocytic infiltrates peribronchially. The acute hepatic necrosis may have been associated with septicaemia due to compromised blood vessels following the uterine torsion. The presence of a single foetus could have resulted in foeto-maternal disproportion with resultant uterine torsion. Torsion of the ...
Safety of Leaving Cook Balloon Uterine Stent in Uterus for One Month - Full Text View - ClinicalTrials.gov
Background4Intrauterine adhesion (IUA) can cause infertility. Hysteroscopic surgery can effectively treat most IUA. In order to prevent adhesion reformation after surgery, most gynecologists will prescribe high-dose estrogen to stimulate endometrial growth, and leave an IUD or a Foley catheter in uterus for 1-3 months. But neither IUD nor Foley catheter conform to the uterine cavity. The Cook balloon uterine stent was designed to fit into the uterine cavity. But it was designed to tamponade the uterus to prevent post-operative uterine bleeding. Its not known if it can be left in the uterus for 30 days.. Study Design4Uterine culture was done before hysteroscopic surgery, and 30 days later. The study group comprise patients with uterine stent; the control group comprise patients who undergo hysteroscopic surgeries but without uterine stent.. Method4Immediately before hysteroscopic surgery, a culture tip is inserted into the uterine cavity and sent for culture. Another culture was done 30 ...

Torsion could be corrected by rolling in 61.54% (32/52) of the cases treated within 36 ...
Transvaginal endometrial perfusion of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor for infertile women with thin endometrium in frozen...
Introduction: We often see patients with a thin endometrium in ART cycles, in spite of standard and adjuvant treatments. Improving endometrial growth in patients with a thin endometrium is very difficult. Without adequate endometrial thickness these patients, likely, would not have reached embryo transfer. Materials and Methods: This is a non randomized intervential clinical trial. Among 68 infertile patients with thin endometrium (7 mm) at the 12th-13th cycle day, 34 patients received G-CSF (300 microgram/lmL) to improve endometrial thickness. It was directly administered by slow intrauterine infusion using IUI catheter. If the endometrium had not reached at least a 7-mm within 48-72 h, a second infusion was given. Endometrial thickness was assessed by serial vaginal ultrasound at the most expanded area of the endometrial stripe. The cycle was cancelled in the patients with thin endometrium (endometrial thickness 7mm) until 19th cycle day ultimately. Results: The cycle cancelation rate owing to ...

Uterine diseases in cattle occur at all stages of the reproduction cycle but the majority of cases is found in the postpartum period. The inflammation of the uterus is generally defined as metritis or endometritis, with several graduations, e.g. puerperal metritis, clinical metritis, clinical or subclinical endometritis. Whether uterine diseases have a negligible, moderate or detrimental effect on fertility is still under discussion and depends on definitions and classification. In the past, it was assumed that the pregnant uterus is free of pathogens, but recent studies found several species including pathogens in the uterus and endometrium of pregnant cows. After parturition, a broad diversity of bacteria with >200 different species has been found in the early postpartum period. Not all of these bacteria, however, are considered as pathogens. Furthermore, bacteriological findings provide only evidence for infection but not for inflammation. For some bacteria, particularly Escherichia coli and ...
what is a septate uterus Archives - IVI Fertility
What is a septate uterus? Unless you have a medical background, you may struggle for a definition. You may assume that it has something to do with infection because the word is similar to sepsis or septic, but this is not the case. The word comes from septum, which is simply a tissue dividing two chambers, such as those found in the heart or the middle of the nose. A septate uterus is therefore a uterus which is divided into two by a septum.. ...

Christinas Created Creations: WHAT IS A PYOMETRA?
WHAT MIGHT MAKE THE VET SUSPECT THIS INFECTION?. Classically, the patient is an older female dog. (Pyometra can occur in the cat but its not nearly as common.) Usually, she has finished a heat cycle in the previousl 1-2 months. She has a poor appetite and may be vomiting or drinking an excessive amount of water. In the more usual “open pyometra†the cervix is open and the purulent uterine contents is able to drip out thus a smelly vaginal discharge is usually apparent. There is also a form of pyometra called a “closed pyometra†where the cervix is closed. In these cases, there is no vaginal discharge and the clinical presentation is more difficult to diagnose. These patients also tend to be sicker than those with open pyometra due to retention of the toxic uterine contents. Lab work shows a pattern typical of widespread infection which is often helpful in narrowing down the diagnosis. Radiographs may show a gigantic distended uterus though sometimes this is not obvious and ...

At Gynescope, we pass a flexible or rigid telescope-like instrument through the vagina to inspect the cervix and inside of the uterus for defects. Surgery designed to correct such defects or remove any unwanted tissues can be carried out. Major open surgeries are prevented with the use of the hysteoscope.. ...
When To Spay a Dog - House Pets Today
Spaying is the right decision for most dogs. In addition to the risk of unwanted litters, there are significant health risks associated with dogs not being spayed.. Spaying prevents pyometra (uterine infection), ovarian and uterine cancer (albeit rare) and drastically decreases the risk of mammary cancer. Spaying also prevents pyometra (uterine infection) which can result in a life-threatening emergency if not treated early, says Dr. Waxman.. We want to spay our dogs, but having the surgery done too early can have unintended consequences. Dr. Waxman says that in some breeds, early spaying can predispose certain breeds to cancers more commonly seen in altered individuals (such as lymphoma and bone cancer).. In addition, there have been some studies that indicate there can be a connection between female dogs spayed early and the development of urinary incontinence. Large female dogs were more susceptible to having incontinence post spaying.. Furthermore, Dr. Waxman advises that studies show ...

Business For Your Health: ...Endometriosis...
What is that? Endometriosis in simple is the tissue that is supposed to line the inside of the uterus, and shed each month with the menstrual cycle. Actually what I just said is not endometriosis, but endometrial. Endometriosis is a painful uterine disease. This awful disease causes endometrial to grow outside the uterus on the ovaries, around the fallopian tubes, or across the ligaments that support the uterus. Where it lands, it weaves weblike scars as it anchors itself in your internal tissues. Then, like normal endometrial tissue, it swells and bleeds during menstruation, leaving a discharge that cant exit the body and that can cause inflammation and scarring ...

This is a very important, extremely important article about the very difficult and heart-wrenching problem of how to help a woman become pregnant who is struggling with a particular form of infertility where the lining of the endometrial cavity is or the endometrium is too thin. If you think about it, and this was pointed out in the article, its really miraculous that a woman can have bleeding and shedding of the endometrium every month throughout her reproductive years without scarring. Any other tissue in the body would have trouble with scarring. But unfortunately, there are some women who do scar, its talked about in this study, is Ashermans syndrome where intrauterine adhesions happen, which the miracle is that all women dont have that as this bleeding and shedding takes place every month. Or then some people just seem to have somewhat genetic propensity to it. And then there is this lactobacillus-dominant endometrial microbiome thats supposed to be happening and sometimes that happens ...

Does castration = longer life? - The Straight Dope
Youre not going to want to hear this, Dave. But according to one much-cited study, castrated men live nearly 14 years longer than their intact brethren, which if true means theres some elective surgery you may want to think about. But first lets talk about dogs.. Its not hard to find statements in the veterinary literature that neutering - here meaning gonadectomy in either sex - prolongs the life of both male and female pets. To cite an obvious advantage, a neutered male dog is unlikely to get testicular cancer, while spaying female dogs virtually eliminates uterine disease and mammary tumors. Animal welfare groups promoting neutering have been happy to spread the word about these benefits.. Researchers into human longevity have also been interested, although for a different reason. Life expectancy in the U.S. has increased sharply over the past century, but more so in women than men. In 1900, a newborn boy could expect to live 46.3 years and a newborn girl 48.3 years, a difference of two ...

Mycotic invasion of the mares uterus | Veterinary Record
Uterine infections in three mares following repeated uterine manipulations and antibiotic therapy were caused by Aspergillus fumigatus in two cases and Candida albicans in the third. Two of the infections were noticed during dioestrus and one at oestrus and one mare produced a purulent vulval discharge. Large numbers of neutrophils, increased protein concentrations and the presence of fungal hyphae in flushings from the uterine lumen were indicative of active infection. The mycotic infections caused only transient aberrations of the oestrous cycle and recovery without treatment was completed within 23 days.. ...

I will collect now blood and he told me that the blood sample should tell us if it is a uterine infection or uterine cancer. Would you agree with that statement?, Also, I was thinking what if it is intestinal bleeding? She seems like shes in pain when shes peeing and pooping. Also, there was some mucus in her poop. Roxy first arrived last year with health problems including a uterine infection that was cured with an emergency spay that saved her life. She was initially suspected to be pregnant and its fortunate she wasnt, because Northern dogs typically have litters of 9-14 puppies. A lack of spay and neutering in the far north is a serious problem, and some vets in Southern Ontario are now sending teams north for spay/neuter clinics to help control the overpopulation of loose, wild dogs.. Please, always spay and neuter your companion animals!. After her emergency spay, we got Roxy healthy in our foster care program and her then-foster mom fell in love with her. Surgeons perform first U.S. uterus transplant - Houston Chronicle
Other countries have tried womb transplants - Sweden reported the first successful birth in 2014, with a total of five healthy babies so far. Doctors there say the still experimental treatment might be an alternative for some of the thousands of women unable to have children because they were born without a uterus or lost it to disease. If a woman is approved for a transplant in the study, she would first have to have eggs removed from her ovaries, like is done for in vitro fertilization, and then freeze the embryos. The hospital said it would attempt transplants in women with whats called uterine factor infertility, meaning they were born without a uterus or with uterine abnormalities that block pregnancy.
