For urinalysis, midstream collection is recommended (1)(2)(3). Health-associated reference limits for leukocyte and erythrocyte counts in female urine are important for detecting hematuria, pyuria, and urinary tract infection (3). To understand the effects of urinary collection and the menstrual cycle on urinalysis, we examined first-stream and midstream urine samples from healthy female students with use of an automated dipstick reader and the fully automated urine cell analyzer, UF-100.. Specimens were obtained from 64 healthy female students (age range, 18-20 years) at the College of Medical Technology. All were asymptomatic and had no extant urologic disease. They were instructed to collect only first and midstream urine samples in sterile containers at the same time and not to wipe or spread the labia. The volume of the first urine was measured, and the specimen was analyzed within 2 h. The students provided written, informed consent to participate in the study as well as information about ...

Nice review of the whole business: Am. Fam. Phys. 71: 1153, 2005. SPOT URINE COLLECTION You will frequently order tests on random, timed, and 24-hour urine specimens. Since the chemical urinalysis is so easy, youll perform it frequently in your practice. Counting the labor and reagents, its $0.65 per test. The real, hidden expense of urinalysis comes from its sensitivity, because it may prompt further studies that in the vast majority of people do not lead to the discovery of treatable disease. Id recommend a chemical urinalysis on everybody who has any symptoms suggesting kidney ("Uh, I just dont feel well lately") or bladder disease, and anyone you dont know well or whos sick without an obvious cause (you dont want to miss glomerulonephritis, endocarditis, or pyelonephritis, Doc... Br. Med. J. 301: 329, 1990). Screening aims to find treatable disease without excessive risk or cost of workups for false-positives. When there are no symptoms, it seems reasonable to do a chemical urinalysis ...
Air Force E-6 tested positive for D-Amphetamines on a military urinalysis test. When he was pulled in for questioning by OSI, he was ordered to provide another urinalysis sample. This second sample also tested positive for D-Amphetamine. Based on the nanogram levels and time between urinalysis collections, the two tests were clearly the result of two separate ingestions of D-Amphetamine. At his subsequent court-martial, we were able to demonstrate that our client had unknowingly ingested his wifes Adderall prescription on numerous occasions. Our cross examination of the governments forensic toxicologist led to her conceding the scientific plausibility of this explanation, based both on the nanogram levels of each sample, as well as the ration of D-Amphetamine to L-Amphetamine in the urinalysis collections. Result: The member panel found our client NOT GUILTY.. ...

Urinalysis is an integral part of rutine laboratory work. Qualitative urinalysis includes visual inspection of urine, chemical and urinary sediment examination. European Urinalysis Guidelines were given by the European Confederation of Laboratory Medicine for better standardization of urinalysis. According to the guidelines a defined volume of urine, between 5 - 12 mL, should be centrifuged at 400 g for 5 min in a conical tube. Supernatant should be removed with an adjusted vacuum tool, supravitally stained and examinated under microscope. The aim of this research was to determine do the type of the tube and the method of removal of supernatant have an effect on urinary sediment findings and is the volume of 5 mL of urine enough for accurate urinary sediment analysis. The research was conducted in KBC Sestre Milosrdnice, in the Department of Chemistry. 110 samples were collected and each one was visually and chemically examined. 47 samples were used for the comparison of round bottom and conical ...

How Can Kidney Disease Be Detected Early?. When the kidneys begin to fail, they lose their ability to concentrate urine. Urine that was once deep yellow in color becomes dilute (more clear in appearance). While the difference in concentration isnt always obvious to the naked eye, it can be detected by a urinalysis. However, you may notice that your pet is drinking more water, urinating more frequently, and urinating in inappropriate places.. What Is a Urinalysis?. As the name implies, a urinalysis is the analysis of a pets urine. While a urinalysis is generally performed to evaluate the health of the urinary tract, including the kidneys, it can also provide information about the state of organs such as the liver and the pancreas.. How Is a Urinalysis Performed?. Ideally, a urine sample should be obtained by cystocentesis-a relatively painless procedure in which a needle is placed through the abdominal wall directly into the urinary bladder. A urine sample obtained in this manner is not ...
If symptoms are suggestive of UTI, your doctor may ask for various tests for confirmation of diagnosis and for guidance of appropriate treatment. Routine urine analysis: your doctor may ask for routine lab test for urine analysis to ascertain if there are red blood cells, white blood cells or bacteria in urine, which are indicative of infection and UTI. It is important to remember that urine should be collected properly for urine analysis, because collection of urine in wrong way may give wrong or false positive result, which may lead to wrong treatment. For collection of urine (for urine analysis), collect a sample collection sterile bottle from the lab. The first morning urine (immediately after getting up in the morning urine should be collected) sample should be collected. Collect mid-stream urine sample. For this, allow some urine to pass and then collect the urine in adequate volume (as instructed by the lab from where you collected the sample bottle) before you finish urination. If the first

Often, people with the frequent tendency of developing urine infections undergo routine urinalysis tests. These may be done in several different ways. The dipstick test is the most common method of Urinalysis which can indicate presence of sugar, proteins, acidity, ketones as well as bacteria in the urine. In case of microscopic Urinalysis, a few drops of urine may be examined under the microscope and these often indicate white (WBC) or red blood cells (RBC) in urine without bacteria. Such results often confuse people; in that they want to know why these cells are present, despite the fact that there are no bacteria alongside them. ...

A urinalysis is begun with the collection of a urine sample. Urine can be obtained by three methods:. Catheterization consists of inserting a flexible plastic tube into the urethra, then up into the bladder (the reservoir inside the body where urine is stored until the pet urinates).. Cystocentesis is a very common method to obtain urine from dogs and cats. This procedure involves introducing a needle directly into the bladder through the body wall. This is a relatively painless and quick procedure. The pet can be lying or standing. The bladder is palpated (felt) and a needle is inserted into the bladder.. Free catch urine samples are obtained by catching a sample when the pet urinates. This is easy in some pets and quite difficult in others. Plastic containers, ladles, scoops and various objects can be used. The container should be as clean as possible for the most accurate of results. This method is the least "sterile" and is associated with the most lab error.. Most veterinary hospitals have ...

To the Editor:. I received a letter the other day from an insurance company informing me it would not pay for office urinalysis because its "medical staff" decided that under the companys reimbursement policy, the reagents, specimen cup, reporting form, gloves, hazardous-waste disposal and office personnel involved in this test were "incidental" and therefore worth nothing. If a dipstick urinalysis is incidental to an office visit, how about a hemoglobin, hematocrit - or even a CBC? There is no end to this slippery slope.. More and more, were seeing insurance companies and Medicare climbing into the drivers seat. For years theyve felt they have the right to call the tune because they pay the piper. But, like the ill-fated council members of Hamelin, they now want to call the tune and not pay the piper. Allowing insurance companies or Medicare to decide what theyll pay and when theyll pay it is like asking someone who owes you money how much he or she feels like paying. Try getting ...

A urinalysis alone usually doesnt provide a definite diagnosis. Depending on the reason your doctor recommended this test, abnormal results may or may not require follow-up.. Your doctor may evaluate the urinalysis results along with those of other tests - or order additional tests - to determine next steps.. For example, if you are otherwise healthy and have no signs or symptoms of illness, results slightly above normal on a urinalysis may not be a cause for concern and follow-up may not be needed. However, if youve been diagnosed with a kidney or urinary tract disease, elevated levels may indicate a need to change your treatment plan.. For specifics about what your urinalysis results mean, talk with your doctor.. ...
