Data and research on development including official development assistance (ODA), aid architecture and effectiveness, conflict, fragility, evaluation, gender, governance and poverty., This report examines land-use trends, policies and practices in Korea, in particular in the city of Busan, through the lens of urban regeneration and citizen participation. Land-use planning is critical for the efficient and inclusive management of cities, pursuing sustainable and balanced development and improving quality of life and regional competitiveness. Korea has benefitted from comprehensive and well-structured, hierarchical land-use planning and urban regeneration frameworks. However, faced with a series of demographic and economic challenges, together with geographic factors and historical developments, Korea needs to re-evaluate land-use management and urban regeneration to leverage inclusive growth and boost competitiveness in Korean cities. This report argues that involving citizens in land-use planning and
Mexico City, 4 November 2015 - UN-Habitat recently organized an Expert Group Meeting to provide concrete recommendations for the Urban Regeneration process of the City of Mexico. A team of eight international urban planning experts and more than 20 Mexican experts presented the international experiences of New York, Sao Paulo, Bogota, Cordoba, Quito, Bilbao and Barcelona on urban renewal and regeneration. Drawing from these international examples, the multidisciplinary team proposed concrete action points to address the social, legal, financial, spatial and environmental challenges of the City of Mexico. Striking transformations are taking place in the urban landscape. The regeneration of urban areas in the UK and around the world has become an increasingly important issue amongst governments and populations since the global economic downturn. This textbook provides an accessible and critical synthesis of urban regeneration in the UK, analyzing key policies, approaches, issues and debates. It places the historical and contemporary regeneration agenda in context. The second edition has been extensively revised and updated to incorporate advances in literature, policy and case study examples, as well as giving greater discussion to the New Labour period of urban policy, and the urban agenda and regeneration policies of the Conservative-Liberal Democrat Coalition government elected in 2010. The book is divided into five sections, with Section I establishing the conceptual and political framework for urban regeneration in the UK. Section II traces policies that have been adopted by central ...

Downloadable! This paper sets out to critically examine the adoption of a partnership approach to urban regeneration at neighbourhood level across eight European cities. While all of the cities were committed to the idea of the socially integrated city, significant differences emerged in the conceptualisation and practice of partnership at neighbourhood level. This paper draws on case studies assembled in the course of an EU funded thematic network (ENTRUST) to illustrate, in particular, the challenges associated with (1) mobilising the private sector and (2) engaging the local population in the process. The paper concludes that the experience of partnership at neighbourhood level is largely determined by contextual factors such as local and national institutional structures, political culture and the relative power of potentially competing actors within the urban regeneration system.

Besides the immorality of Urban Renewal, it is also a monumental flop from the standpoint of the "humanitarian" purposes that were ascribed to it by the Thirteen-Thirteen lobbyists. During the nineteen-year period from its inception to the end of January 1968, Urban Renewal has depleted the nations housing supply by 315,451 units. Only 124,175 replacement dwellings were built, but 439,626 were demolished under Urban Renewal programming. During this period, $7.1 billion was spent on these projects. Over a million people and an uncounted number of small neighborhood businesses have been the victims of the federal bulldozer. Who weeps for them? Private land which Urban Renewal confiscates from hapless owners is divided by the bureaucrats between public and private interests. About 16 percent has remained tax exempt in public ownership (raising local taxes), while valuable acreage is sold at cut-rate prices to privileged interests which build high-rise office complexes and shopping centers rather ...

Urban regeneration aims at improvements in the economic, physical, social and environmental conditions of an area that has been subject to negative change and is considered vulnerable (non‐resilient) (Tallon, 2013). It can include aspects of (local) business development, housing growth and improvement, community building and environmental improvement (Tyler et al., 2013). Attention also needs to be paid to ecological restoration across scales (Andersson et al., 2014) and aspects of social justice. Urban regeneration brings new opportunities for cities to reconsider their planning strategies in the context of limited available space, deprived areas, social inequities or global environmental changes (Couch et al., 2008). NBS projects need to consider the interlinkages between urban regeneration, aesthetic appeal, urban development/building culture, urban structure, design and aesthetics, urban ecology and its relation to energy and water use (Hemphill et al., 2004; Laprise et al., 2015; Sepe, ...

In this paper, results are reported of a technology assessment of the use and integration of decentralized energy systems and storage devices in an urban renewal area. First the general context of a different approach based on rethinking and the incorporation of ongoing integration of coming economical and environmental interests on infrastructure, in relation to the sustainable urban development and regeneration from the perspective of the tripod people, technology and design is elaborated. However, this is at different scales, starting mainly from the perspective of the urban dynamics. This approach includes a renewed look at the urban metabolism and the role of environmental technology, urban ecology and environment behavior focus. Second, the potential benefits of strategic and balanced introduction and use of decentralized devices and electric vehicles (EVs), and attached generation based on renewables are investigated in more detail in the case study of the Merwe-Vierhaven area (MW4) in the
I dont know, if anyones evaluated the impact of the 1994 Assault Weapon Ban on gun violence, but the 1990s saw the first drop in violent crime in a generation.. Other factors that helped were a booming economy, improved police methods, and urban renewal programs that helped rejuvenate big cities.. Before jumping into the gun violence/gun control debate, itd be interesting to actually have information on what the last big gun law in the U.S. actually accomplished; other than convincing gun enthusiasts that Sen. Diane Feinstein is going to lead hit squads of ATF operatives to confiscate every privately owned gun in America.. Emotional appeals are useful. Opponents of gun legislation have successfully put the slippery slope* idea into the heads of many Americans, based purely on emotional appeals.. I just think, when one side is 100% vested in emotional appeals to their supporters, you need something to show the efficacy of gun laws and how they benefit everyone or at least most people, who are ...
In an effort to spur demolition, Robert Moses declared Greenwich Village blighted and a slum. The existing buildings now command some of the highest prices for Manhattan real estate.. However, whereas the upside in intact historic neighborhoods goes to individual homeowners, the potential housing gains in a neighborhood leveled by urban renewal are often driven by the land value and rezonings that benefit developers rather the homeowners.. The neighborhoods hit hard by, or entirely demolished by, urban renewal were positioned as development opportunities at the time. But it took decades for that land to become a compelling opportunity for development. The same policies which demolished these neighborhoods encouraged residents to leave for the suburbs, making that urban land less valuable. Ironically, the development opportunities did not become truly compelling until, ironically, the nearby intact neighborhoods recovered in an organic manner.. Comparatively stagnant housing prices in the ...

Cities are central to efforts in tackling poverty and vital to economic growth. This capacity to create positive change suggests that the urban development agenda would be a natural draw for the international development community. Homi Kharas, Laurence Chandy, and Joshua Hermias review what has been happening with external assistance for urban development and examine urban development in the broader context of changes in the global aid architecture.
An important health issue in urban areas is how changes arising from the regeneration of city-areas affect social determinants of health and equity. This paper examines the impacts attributable to a new fish market and to delays in the regeneration of a port area in a deteriorated region of the Bay of Pasaia (Spain). Potential differential impacts on local residents and socially vulnerable groups were evaluated to determine health inequalities. An in-depth, prospective and concurrent Health-Impact-Assessment (HIA) focused on equity was conducted by the regional Public Health Department, following the Merseyside guidelines. Data from different sources was triangulated and impacts were identified using qualitative and quantitative methods. The intervention area is characterised by poor social, environmental, and health indicators. The distinctness of the two projects generates contrasting health and inequality impacts: generally positive for the new fish market and negative for the port area. The former

A symposium on Osteoarthritis of the knee and hip joint was held at the AO Center Davos, Switzerland on July 28, 2017. The symposium was organized by the Musculoskeletal Regeneration Program of the AO Research Institute (ARI) in collaboration with Prof Markus Wimmer from the Department of Orthopaedics of the Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, US. Prof Mauro Alini, Head of the Musculoskeletal Regeneration Program, and Wimmer welcomed the audience by explaining the origins of their collaboration. In fact, the cooperation between Alini and Wimmer started in 1999 at the AO Research Institute Davos with the development of a novel pin-on-ball bioreactor system for cartilage tissue engineering and related research. Since then these cartilage bioreactors have been further developed both in Davos and in Chicago, and have resulted in numerous publications about mechanical effects on cartilage repair and chondrogenesis of mesenchymal stem cells. During the morning sessions of the symposium, ...

Contract Value: £400k. This scheme was undertaken as a show piece within the Haverfordwest overall master plan for future development and improvement of the urban landscape for Pembrokeshire County Council through the contractors framework agreement.. The scheme was a complicated and difficult scheme on all fronts due to the requirement to ensure that un-interrupted access was maintained for the businesses both during opening hours and during delivery periods. This was ensured by a constantly monitored and ever changing barrier and walkway system being used which considering the circumstances worked very well for the project duration.. Further complications with this scheme included a very tight and limited access way for material deliveries to the works areas, the maintaining of a safe working environment for both our work force and the public in particular during periods of stone cutting and finally the building of setting of the materials was a constant challenge due to the difficult levels ...

Summary Since January 2007 Romania has become one of the latest eastern countries to be part of the European Union on the current decade. Since then, Romanians have started benefiting of becoming part of the main economic community of the region, which means financial support, open market standards, work flow opportunities and so on. However technical and social support has been not following the same patterns, which is represented in a lack of strategy about what and how the cities would be developing in relation with the EU region. Justice REHNQUIST delivered the opinion of the Court.. Respondent Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company (C & P) was required to relocate some of its telephone transmission facilities by reason of a street realignment. It sought compensation from petitioner Norfolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority (NRHA), the local government agency responsible for the urban renewal plan which caused the street realignment. C & P claimed that it was a "displaced person" as that term is defined in the Uniform Relocation Act, 1 passed by Congress in 1970. We hold that C & P is not a "displaced person" within the meaning of the Act.. The Relocation Act provides that any person "displaced" from his home or place of business by a federal or federally-funded project is entitled to relocation benefits, including reimbursement for the "actual reasonable expenses in moving himself, his family, business, farm operation, or other personal property." 42 U.S.C. 4622(a)(1). The Act by its terms binds only federal ...
