The objective was to determine if cooking skills and meal planning behaviors are associated with greater fruit and vegetable intake and lower body mass index (BMI) in first-year college students who are at risk for excessive weight gain. A cross-sectional analysis was conducted using baseline data from a multi-state research project aimed at preventing weight gain in first-year college students. Cooking type, frequency and confidence, self-instruction for healthful mealtime behavior intention, self-regulation of healthful mealtime behavior, and cup equivalents of fruits and vegetables (FV) were measured using validated surveys. BMI was calculated from measured height and weight. First-year students (n = 1108) considered at risk for weight gain from eight universities completed baseline assessments within the first month of entering college. Multiple linear regression was used to determine associations among independent variables of cooking patterns, meal planning behaviors, and dependent variables of

In 2003 the 12-month prevalences in the Netherlands were estimated at 31.4% for neck pain, 30.3% for shoulder pain, and 17.5% for wrist and hand pain. Research data suggest that these complaints are increasingly common among university students. The aims of the present study are to provide insight into the prevalence of complaints of arm, neck or shoulder in a university population, to evaluate the clinical course of these complaints and to identify prognostic factors which influence this course. ...

TY - CPAPER AB - This work in progress proposes answering the research question: How do we measure success for community college transfer programs? This paper will provide background information on the current state of data collection for community colleges and pose questions regarding next steps in data collection and analysis. We need more engineers and community colleges may be able to provide additional students (Engineering and Council 2005; PCAST 2012). The pathways to engineering via community college should be re-examined and potentially improved. Metrics should be established in order to assess the current rate of success and identify areas of improvement in community college transfer pathways. Engineering students at four-year schools are identified through their applications. Measured outcomes at four-year schools include persistence in the major and obtaining a Bachelors degree in engineering (Ohland et al. 2008). Unfortunately, the data that are available to determine success of ...

This book addresses the relationship between research universities and the knowledge needs of post-industrial society, focusing on the increased importance of knowledge generation and organization for the economic and social well-being of society. It also discusses how research universities can build better linkages between the expanding knowledge within both the university and in society and can increase the applications and accessibility of that knowledge. Chapter 1 examines the concept of knowledge and the challenges that research universities face. Chapter 2 discusses three spheres of human activity for which knowledge is an increasingly critical resource, namely economic growth, social development, and civic culture. Chapter 3 provides an overview of demographic, social, and economic forces giving rise to constituencies with special knowledge needs to which the work of universities is especially relevant. Chapter 4 offers a matrix for identifying specific knowledge needs by

The death of an 18-year-old high school graduate after University of Cincinnati police used a Taser on him is likely to reopen an intense debate on whether or how the weapons should be allowed on college campuses. Yet since the last time that debate was had - following high-profile incidents at the University of California at Los Angeles and University of Florida in 2006 and 2007, respectively - it seems that not much has changed.. After investigating the incidents, those two universities, to be sure, revisited their own police department policies regarding how and when Tasers should be used. Both determined their officers acted appropriately, but UCLA issued new guidelines allowing Taser use only on violent subjects, and Florida created a more formal, step-by-step confrontation approach that makes the weapons more of a last resort at public events.. At the macro level, perhaps because the weapons are rarely used, nothing really changed.. Im not sure if its any different, said Anne P. ...

Oregon voters passed Measure 5 capping property taxes in 1990. That same election, Lane County voters approved a new property tax base for Lane Community College. Because the statewide measure would equalize funding for Oregons community colleges, the resulting funding uncertainties presented a dilemma Community College Commissioner Mike Holland called a cosmic joke.[27] The College eventually lobbied successfully for its new tax base, and envisioned a return to better times, but President Jerry Moskus observed, there were signs neither Lane nor Oregon would ever be the same.[27]. The northern spotted owl controversy and the nationwide recession of the early 1990s brought displaced timber workers to the College, after the dire 1992 forecast of a crippling recession in which President George Bush predicted, well be up to our neck in owls, and every millworker will be out of a job.[28] The New York Times reported, At Lane Community College, the nations largest center for retraining ...

Introduction Age at menarche reflects the health status of a population. This marks the beginning of sexual maturation and is affected by nutritional status and prevailing environmental conditions. This study measured the menarcheal age of female undergraduate students in northern Ghana and explored factors that could impact on the onset of menarche. Method GraphPad 5.01 was used to analyze data collected from 293 randomly selected female university students in a cross-sectional study using a semi-structured questionnaire. Association between different variables was tested using appropriate statistical tests. Results The mean recall age at menarche of participants in this study was 13.66 ±1.87 years for a female population of mean age, 23.04±5.07 years. Compared to female students who lived in rural settings, urban and suburban areas dwellers significantly recorded earlier menarche (p = 0.0006). Again, females from high income earning families experienced menarche earlier than those who were born

Canadian statistics suggest that a high percentage of male university students engage in hazardous or harmful consumption of alcohol and this misuse has been linked to mental health issues and social problems on campus. Socially constructed ideals of masculinity have been associated with substance misuse and with social forces that constrain dialogue about these issues. However, engaging post-secondary, male students in health promotion initiatives is a notoriously difficult endeavour As part of a larger study, a Summit model approach was used across three Canadian universities to develop male student leadership and promote meaningful dialogue about male substance misuse on campus. This workshop will present lessons learned in the implementation of the Summit model to engage male students, and will engage the audience in dialogue about application of these, and other ideas, across university campuses. ...

University of Houston-Victoria student Ashleigh Kellis-Carr became one of the newest members of the UHV Student Senate in May.. As a senator at large, one of her first responsibilities was promoting the student governing body and a new freshman committee that will advise the Senate. She got her first opportunity during summer freshman orientation sessions. I had a lot of fun volunteering at freshman orientations to get students to sign up for the freshmen committee, she said. Its good to focus on your studies, but its also important to be involved. This committee is designed to address the unique needs of our first freshman class. The freshmen will get to voice their opinions, views on student life and suggest new activities. Kellis-Carr said the committee will consist of eight freshmen and is an important step for the Senate. With the new downward expansion at UHV, we have freshmen and sophomores on campus for the first time, she said. Its important they participate in Student Senate ...

Panjab University Campus Students Council or PUCSC is Students union consisting of the departmental representatives and other office bearers i.e. President, Vice-President, Secretary and Joint-Secretary along with 114 Departmental Representatives (DRs) directly elected by the students from the various teaching departments on the Panjab University, Chandigarh campus. Further, these elected office-bearers and department representatives elect the remaining five members of the executive of the Council. The Dean Student Welfare is ex officio Chairman of the Council. Elections are held every year in August-September months. There is ban on property defacement for clean elections. Panjab University has over 70% female students but only 15-20% of girl students vote or participate in election process, therefore the Council presidents post was never headed by a girl in the history of the university elections. Thus PUCSC politics are dominated by male students only. As of 2015, PU has about 13681 student ...
DISCUSSION. The correlation found between LAP and glycemia in young female university students is positive and weak. The LAP explains the glycemia in 4% while other factors explain glycemias levels.. The association between LAP and glucose regulation biomarkers has being described in literature and its results point out more accuracy of the index than body mass index (BMI) and other anthropometric parameters. Combining waist circumference with fasting triglycerides reflect, respectively, anatomic and physiological alterations associated to lipid accumulation. Thus, LAP might be used as a powerful index to predict insulin resistance in populations (6).. The only study we found which evaluated this association in young healthy female population was the one of Oh et al. (2). The research was developed with 2810 healthy female Koreans from 18 to 39 years of age. The authors defend the role of LAP in the early detection of individuals with abnormal regulation of glucose, metabolic syndrome or ...
In 2019 the Cornell English Department launched a partnership between current graduate students and faculty at two local community colleges, Tompkins-Cortland Community College and Onondaga Community College. Both serve rural populations. Nearly half of all low-income, underrepresented minority undergraduate students are enrolled in community colleges. The goal is for PhD students in the humanities to learn about the pleasures and challenges of teaching at community colleges. In the fall of 2019, we sent out a call for interested graduate students and selected four from the group for the academic year.. The Cornell students and the community college partners built a shared collection of resources about pedagogy and community college populations, held a rich and productive series of discussions about assessment, and talked specifically about the ways that most models of grading serve elite groups. They shared readings that helped them to consider alternatives to standard assessment practices in ...
Abstract: The present study sought to determine if a relationship existed between ASU freshmen women and their upperclass sisters in attitudes and behavior. An attitude and a behavior questionnaire were scored on a scale of 0 (conservative) to 5 (liberal) for each subject. Attitude scores were found to be generally higher than behavior scores. A relationship was found between freshmen and their upperclass sisters on attitudes but not behavior. A relationship was also found for upperclass sisters between their attitudes and behavior but was not found for freshmen women. Conclusions are: a) sibling attitudes but not behaviors are related, b) a relationship exists for upperclass sisters between attitude and behavior, and c) no relationship exists for freshmen between their attitudes and behavior.. Reported Sexual Behavior And Attitudes Of Appalachian State University Students: A Comparison Of Freshmen Girls And Their Upperclass Sisters ...

Research indicates that alcohol abuse is linked to negative consequences (e.g., drunk driving, physical altercations, etc.) among college students (Hingson, Heeren, Winter, & Wechsler, 2005). Although previous research has shown that parental influence diminishes when adolescents enter college, more recent research suggests that parents still have some influence (Galotti & Mark, 1994; Lehr, Dilorio, Dudley, & Lipana, 2000). This week the DRAM reviews a study that examined the impact of parental permissibility of alcohol use during late high school on alcohol use and negative drinking consequences experienced among college students (Abar, Abar, & Turrisi, 2009). Methods: The researchers randomly recruited...

Remediation, sometimes called developmental education, is designed to help students achieve a level of college and career readiness that will enable them to succeed in core academic subjects such as reading, math, and science. Community colleges require students to take remedial courses if they are judged to need additional preparation in order to earn credit from college-level studies. Almost 50% of the class of 2013 entering community colleges in Illinois were placed in developmental education in at least one subject. These courses incur tuition costs, but do not earn college credit. Students may be identified as needing remedial courses during high school or through college placement tests. Working with their local community colleges, some Illinois high schools are teaching college-level remedial courses to high school seniors and are seeing dramatic reductions in numbers of students needing remediation at the college level.. ...

Student dormitory as a social and cultural space plays an important role in students' satisfaction from university and higher education and their educational performance, which is why understanding the living conditions of dormitories and their management is necessary to improve it. The present article, while conceptualizing the quality of dormitory life, uses survey method and questionnaire technique to study the quality of dormitory life among 2500 students in 10 university districts and 22 universities in the country. The findings showed that in the welfare dimension, students were dissatisfied with the facilities of the room, the building and the dormitory, the cultural facilities and the physical welfare facilities. In the cultural dimension, on the one hand, students were dissatisfied with the cultural activities and programs in the dormitory, and on the other hand, they would not enjoy their leisure time. In the social dimension, the identity of social pathologies among girls was mainly
Summer is just around the corner and for some that may mean relaxing and recharging by going on camping trips or just hanging out with family and friends. But for others, summer break is a chance to catch up or get ahead in classes. Taking a summer class at a community college allows students to narrow their focus on a single subject - rather than your typical four, five or even six classes during the longer semesters. Although taking a summer class may not sound like a fun way to spend your summer break, taking these classes offer several major benefits. Here are some benefits if you are considering taking a summer class:. Benefit 1: You save money Whether you are a high school or college student, taking summer classes at a community college can save you money in the long run. Community college course credits are typically more affordable than those offered at universities. At a CC you may pay only a few hundred dollars or even less than that if you qualify for fee waivers. At a four year ...

ABSTRACT This study conducted field measurements of the particle geometric surface area (GSA) and number concentrations on a university campus via two real-time approaches: applying the weighted-sum (WS) method and using a Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (SMPS). The measurements were conducted on 4 subjects: laser printing, 3D printing, machining (waterjet cutting, sanding, and welding), and environmental aerosols. The highest emissions were found with 3D printing and welding; these concentrations were measured in the printers enclosure and when the local exhaust ventilation was on, respectively. In general, the two methods agreed well with each other, with an overall Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.85, although the concentrations constantly fluctuated over a wide range, from 20 to 4 × 104 μm2 cm-3. Since the GSA concentrations reported in this study are the first measurements for some scenarios, our results can serve as a reference for further research as well as for individuals in the
