This book addresses the relationship between research universities and the knowledge needs of post-industrial society, focusing on the increased importance of knowledge generation and organization for the economic and social well-being of society. It also discusses how research universities can build better linkages between the expanding knowledge within both the university and in society and can increase the applications and accessibility of that knowledge. Chapter 1 examines the concept of knowledge and the challenges that research universities face. Chapter 2 discusses three spheres of human activity for which knowledge is an increasingly critical resource, namely economic growth, social development, and civic culture. Chapter 3 provides an overview of demographic, social, and economic forces giving rise to constituencies with special knowledge needs to which the work of universities is especially relevant. Chapter 4 offers a matrix for identifying specific knowledge needs by

The death of an 18-year-old high school graduate after University of Cincinnati police used a Taser on him is likely to reopen an intense debate on whether or how the weapons should be allowed on college campuses. Yet since the last time that debate was had - following high-profile incidents at the University of California at Los Angeles and University of Florida in 2006 and 2007, respectively - it seems that not much has changed.. After investigating the incidents, those two universities, to be sure, revisited their own police department policies regarding how and when Tasers should be used. Both determined their officers acted appropriately, but UCLA issued new guidelines allowing Taser use only on "violent subjects," and Florida created a more formal, step-by-step confrontation approach that makes the weapons more of a last resort at public events.. At the macro level, perhaps because the weapons are rarely used, nothing really changed.. "Im not sure if its any different," said Anne P. ...

Are you worried about gaining the freshman 10 or 15 during the first semester of college? Have you struggled to keep those muscles that you worked so hard to develop now that you are juggling college coursework and an active social life?. Do you plop down on the couch any time you have a free minute because you feel so exhausted from long hours of study and partying? Have you noticed that you can barely keep your eyes open during your mid-afternoon class?. These are concerns that should be addressed immediately because college students have a tendency to neglect their health. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle on campus does not have to be boring, painful, or expensive, but it will need some thought and planning. The following tips could be beneficial to students who feel they are turning into couch potatoes:. Make Use of Free College Facilities. Most colleges are exercise friendly and provide students with free access to pools, tennis courts, weight rooms and other facilities that make staying in ...
Oregon voters passed Measure 5 capping property taxes in 1990. That same election, Lane County voters approved a new property tax base for Lane Community College. Because the statewide measure would "equalize" funding for Oregons community colleges, the resulting funding uncertainties presented a dilemma Community College Commissioner Mike Holland called "a cosmic joke."[27] The College eventually lobbied successfully for its new tax base, and envisioned a return to better times, but President Jerry Moskus observed, "there were signs neither Lane nor Oregon would ever be the same."[27]. The northern spotted owl controversy and the nationwide recession of the early 1990s brought displaced timber workers to the College, after the dire 1992 forecast of a crippling recession in which President George Bush predicted, "well be up to our neck in owls, and every millworker will be out of a job."[28] The New York Times reported, "At Lane Community College, the nations largest center for retraining ...

It is so easy to hide our ignorance under such expressions as "plan of creation," "unity of design," etc., and to think that we give an explanation when we only restate a fact. Any one whose disposition leads him to attach more weight to unexplained difficulties than to the explanation of a certain number of facts will certainly reject the theory. ...

The federal government of the United States has demonstrated increasing interest in campus violence over the past decade, beginning with the Student Right To Know and Campus Security Act of 1990.1 Since 1992, federal law has required that universities publish statistics about criminal victimization on campus. Unfortunately, these data reveal little about gun-related injury and fatality rates, whether on or off campus, and nothing about suicide rates at colleges.. Despite this dearth of reliable data, some authors claim that guns at college have become a public health problem. Recent articles report that guns are a growing menace on college campuses2 and that the prevalence of alcohol and firearms on and around college campuses has had deadly effects.3 Responding to such reports, the Association for Student Judicial Affairs unanimously adopted a resolution in 1994 urging colleges to support tough rules and laws to keep guns off campuses. Yet, nothing is known for certain about guns and gun use at ...
Participate in an inquiry or investigation as an undergraduate in collaboration with a faculty mentor that stimulates original thinking, fosters creative approaches to problems, and furthers understanding of research as a process. This research may be new to you and/or it may be new to the field, but the key is that students undertake to define some kind of problem in their disciplines, design and implement a research plan and then present their work. By participating in undergraduate research projects, students can make the most of their college experience, pursue excellence as well as their own interests, and go above and beyond at Edmonds Community College! Working on research projects provides students with excellent experience that develops their interests, sets them apart, develops their research skills, and demonstrates their strengths and abilities. This can open up opportunities at the four-year colleges and universities to which they transfer, giving them a leg up on peers who have not ...

On three different days in the Fall 2014 term, I swabbed two exterior door handles from each of the 65 buildings located on campus. Although it would have been easier to delegate the sampling process to volunteers, I decided to swab each of the 390 door handles myself to ensure consistent pressure and technique. Nonetheless, a magnificent set of seven volunteers shared shifts accompanying me to record metadata and carry the swab cooler. During our "field season" we had several fascinating conversations with members of the Waterloo community, especially because sampling occurred during the peak of the Ebola outbreak in 2014. While we sampled, several people actually expressed concern that Ebola had arrived on campus and that we were assessing the spread of the virus - we had neoprene gloves on after all! An additional frequent interaction during sampling involved the infamous politeness of Canadians. People were constantly waiting to hold the door open for me, and became confused when I didnt ...
High school fraternities and sororities were inspired by and modeled after Greek-letter organizations which became prevalent in North American colleges and universities during the nineteenth century (Owen 492). In some respects these fraternities and sororities are designed to better prepare individuals for college level fraternities. The first known high school fraternity was Torch and Dagger in Council Bluffs, Iowa, founded in 1859. This organization existed with lapses from 1861 to 1866 and again from 1880 to 1893. In 1900 it was renamed Omega Eta Tau and began expanding nationally. Gamma Sigma was organized in October 1869 at Brockport Normal School (then a high school level institution, but now a college). LaSalle Sr. High School in Niagara Falls New York was also home to multiple fraternities and sororities, dating back to the 1950s. Alpha Zeta came into existence at the Union Classical Institute in Schenectady, New York (associated with Union College, home of the college fraternity ...
