Each year, the University receives details of a wide range of concerns relating to research integrity. The University considers such concerns under the framework of the Policy on misconduct in research.. A significant number of the concerns raised can be dealt with through competency, education, and training mechanisms following an Initial Assessment as part of the research misconduct process. In the 2018-2019 academic year, there were over 30 cases of potential misconduct in research which were managed through these mechanisms.. Occasionally, concerns are investigated by a Screening Panel as part of the research misconduct process. The Screening Panel may determine that there is insufficient evidence of misconduct in research; or that the concerns are mistaken, frivolous, vexatious and/or malicious.. Some research integrity concerns which are considered as part of the research misconduct process require Formal Investigation by a Formal Investigation panel as part of the later stages of the ...

It is inevitable that you will encounter ethical challenges in the process of carrying out your research project. The most important thing to do when these situations arise is not to blindly react but to take time out to think through the issues as dispassionately as possible so you can make an informed decision with which you will be able to live now and in the future. In order to do this, it is important to know where you can go for information. Your first source should be your research advisor as he/she is most likely to understand not only the issues but the unique nature of the situation involved and therefore he/she should be in the best position to give you accurate information and thoughtful advice. However, if your issue involves your advisor, it is important to know where else you can go for help. Some departments have an ombudsman specifically for this purpose. In other departments, your undergraduate majors advisor may perform this function. If neither of these individuals can ...

Research is not complete until it has been reported. Research is no contribution to the scientific community until it is reported, whether through publication or some other means. Reports are a necessary first step in the dialog with other scientists about the approach and significance of the work. Unless research is reported, it is impossible for others to build on what has been learned.. Most organizations reviewing research have specific guidelines regarding confidentiality and conflicts of interest. In addition, many organizations and institutions have guidelines dealing explicitly with the responsibilities of peer reviewers, such as those of the American Chemical Society (1996), the Society for Neuroscience (1999), and the Council of Biology Editors (CBE Peer Review Retreat Consensus Group, 1995).. Publication is not merely a matter of credit. One may wish to publish so as not to perish, but this alone is not enough to justify a reports being published. Publications should present some ...

As stated in ResolutionNo9, ResolutionNo466, and the PANDRH-GCPs, the institutional ethics committee (EC) (known as a Comitê de Ética em Pesquisas) (CEP)) must review and approve all clinical trial applications prior to ANVISA initiating its review and approval process. Applications with coordination or sponsorship originating outside of Brazil require an additional EC review by the National Commission for Ethics in Research (Comissão Nacional de Ética em Pesquisa) (CONEP). Please refer to Ethics Committee topic, Scope of Review and Authorizing Body subtopics for detailed information on CONEP responsibilities and other studies requiring CONEP approval. Per ResolutionNo9, ANVISAs approval of a clinical trial application is not dependent upon CONEPs approval. All submissions are initially assessed by a dedicated scientific editor specialised in the scientific topics covered in the manuscript, and may also be evaluated by an appropriate Editorial Advisory Board member or another external expert advisor. All research manuscripts and reviews published in the journal are subject to peer-review. Non-research articles, editorial material and commentaries are usually not reviewed, although editors may elect to undertake review in the interest of authoritative and balanced reporting.. Double blind review: As a default, the referees are aware of the identities of the authors and referee names are withheld from authors (single-blind review). We will withhold author names from referees on request by the authors. The authors may chose this option during the submission process, but it is the authors responsibility to anonymize their manuscript. The editorial offices will not edit the manuscript files submitted for anonymity and will not alert authors who have ...

announced today that it offers submitted an expanded Pediatric Investigation Plan to the European Medications Agency , as part of the process for its submission for a Marketing Authorization Software for pixantrone in the E.U. For the treatment of refractory or relapsed, aggressive non-Hodgkins lymphoma . In September 2009 KlegermanCTI submitted the initial PIP. Our discussions with the pediatric professionals on the PDCO indicated that they agree with our belief that the need for a much less toxic, more effective anthracycline-like agent is usually significant, not merely in lymphoma, but possibly in other tumors. Filing the updated PIP puts us one step closer to completing the MAA submission process, and moves us towards our objective of making pixantrone open to suitable patients...We likewise have a regulatory body to make sure that appropriate boundaries could be arranged. According to Stephen Buranyi, scientific writer with the Guardian, scientific publishing is a vast business, with revenues varying between the music recording and film industries, but far more profitable. herefore, it is not difficult to understand why the scientific publishing business is so profitable. After all, researchers need publications to advance in their career. The majority of scientific journals offer article submissions using online manuscript manager platforms, which resulted in a transition from editorial staff to contributing authors to complete the submission process and to comply with a whole series of journal guidelines.[…]. Keynote speakers are professor Lynn Stout (Cornell, USA) and Ann Tenbrunsel (Notre Dame, USA). The aim of the congress is to gather an audience with an uncompromising willingness to lay bare human follies, blind spots and institutional flaws: the real threats. Renewed rules of conduct and codes of good practice have got fresh authority. So far, so good. However, they cannot do the whole job. A change of culture, the re-consideration of inherent values in our practices and permanent training activities should supplement our institutional policies. But these can only be successful if one is prepared to take insights of the social and behavioural sciences and humanities seriously. The congress includes lectures, theater, workshops and public debate ...

The question of covert text recycling from previous publications is discussed. It is argued that, consistent with current guidance, authors may be allowed to covertly recycle a limited amount of their previously published material but mainly at the phrase level and only when it is composed of very complex descriptions laden with technical terms for which there are no suitable substitutes. Authors may recycle longer segments of text using standard scholarly conventions of quotation and attribution or via some other informal means that alerts readers as to the scope of the recycling, thereby ensuring transparency. The use of percent similarity scores as thresholds for acceptable amounts of reuse should be discouraged. Instead, editors should be given the flexibility to evaluate each instance of recycling by taking into account factors such as the technical nature of the recycled text and the language proficiency of the authors. This article is a response to the following commentary:

Characterization of post-translational modifications (PTMs) of therapeutic proteins is very important during the bioprocess development to maintain desired product quality and during the submission process to regulatory authorities for product approval. Monitoring glycosylation in pharmacokinetic studies can be useful to evaluate the dependence of clearance rates on different glycoforms. The cost and efficiency of characterization affect the speed to market of biopharmaceutical proteins. A reduction in the number of manual processing steps, cost of reagents and consumption of sample, as well as the time required for chemical analysis, is therefore necessary.. The research presented in this thesis is focused on the potential of using microfluidic discs for automated, miniaturized, parallel and rapid sample preparation for PTM characterization of therapeutic monoclonal antibodies. Paper I describes the method development for N-linked glycosylation profiling. Several sample preparation steps have ...
How did you first hear about PeerJ, and what persuaded you to submit to us?. I actually heard about PeerJ at a mycology conference my first year in graduate school and I was excited about the model, the low cost, and the focus on rigorousness as opposed to novelty. I published my first dissertation chapter in PeerJ and had such a great experience that I keep coming back.. How was your publishing experience with us?. Honestly, its the most intuitive submission process Ive ever experienced. Thats a major draw for publishing with PeerJ, in my opinion. Its always disheartening to go through all the work of designing, conducting, and writing up a project to then have to spend an entire day or more just to submit. PeerJ has things very streamlined and the process is fast, so our research can get out to the public as soon as its ready.. How would you describe your experience of our review process?. The federal Office of Research Integrity (ORI) ruled that an Illinois cardiologist engaged in misconduct by bullying fellows and asking attending physicians to falsify information in research records.
A recent taxpayer funded NIH study designed by Dr Gary Wormser of New York Medical College is one example of the ongoing effort to downplay the seriousness of Lyme disease as he excludes the sickest of patients focusing on the acute stage of disease after early treatment. The deceptive results of his study is then assumed to apply to the entire patient population giving the impression that Lyme is a simple nuisance disease and patients who are severely disabled are somehow delusional. A complaint was registered with the Office of Research Integrity. [3 ...
After the infection rate reached its peak, a curious trend emerged: those involved in its research seemed most likely to contract the disease, even with their advanced methods of patient containment. This proved very useful when its corollary was observed: those who drank themselves into unconsciousness, fell asleep immediately after a long day of concentrated work, or stayed indoors and tended to children, were the least susceptible, even though they lived and worked in the public world, hidden not behind doors and walls of research integrity. Doggerel plague therefore was largely cured by the first public and coordinated attempt at deliberate ignorance: by failing to listen to the doggerel pouring from the maws of the diseased, members of the at-risk population could protect themselves, and consequently infection rates dropped. This calamity turned out to be one of acceptance, not infection: only willing and, more importantly, attentive hosts could succumb. Pleased with their skill of ...

One of the most important things to understand about the SE database models is how to get into their database and keep your listing updated. With a search directory, a submission needs to be done to provide the directory all the information needed for the listing. It is generally recommended that this be done by hand, either by you or a person familiar with directory submissions. There are many submission tools available that advertise they automate the submission process. This may be fine for smaller directories but for the major directories, manual submissions are worth the time.. Not all search directories are free; many charge a one-time or annual fee for review. Many of the free search directories have little quality control. For free directories you may have to submit your site several times before being accepted.. There are three different methods for getting into spidering search engines; free site submission, paid inclusion and links from other sites. Virtually all spidering SEs offer a ...

Public reporting will enhance public accountability in health care by increasing the transparency of the quality of care provided in return for public investment. Newer mandates like the HHCAHPS Survey requirement from CMS are increasingly structured to provide specific guidance to recordkeepers. Home health care providers are required to partner with a CMS-approved vendor to administer the survey and data submission process. Ideally, this relationship standardizes the process and helps providers mitigate the ever evolving struggle to maintain both privacy and transparency of records. Vendors document quality assurance measures for their own and subcontractors facilities to demonstrate compliance with HHCAHPS QA guidelines.. Specific recordkeeping requirements of the HHCAHPS include both retention and disposition rules. Data storage must be secure and environmentally controlled for a minimum of three years. Likewise, vendor and subcontractor facilities must be available for on-site visits by ...

Research integrity has two aspects that partially overlap. Firstly, there is integrity of the scientific literature, namely its freedom from errors, and secondly, the integrity of the researchers themselves, i.e. whether they act fairly and honestly. Failures of either can reduce the reproducibility of science, reduce its efficiency, waste funding, and have negative impacts on the scientists themselves, as well as, in some cases, their research subjects.. In the life sciences, statistician John Ioannidis has shown that study design and external pressures mean most published research findings are likely to be false, and drug makers Bayer and Amgen reported that 75% and 89% of preclinical findings could not be repeated. The number of published retractions is growing at an accelerating rate, and in most cases, the cause for the retraction is attributed to misconduct.. Three reasons are commonly evoked to explain how the errors that prevent reproducibility arise. They can be caused by bad luck or ...

My direct expertise in forensic image analysis stems from 20 years of relevant federal work in my second career, starting as one of the original Investigator-Scientists in the Division of Research Investigations (or later the Division of Investigative Oversight), Office of Research Integrity (1993-2013). In this position, I was responsible for the initial assessment of allegations of data falsification and also for the oversight of investigations into allegations of falsification of research. Both tasks involved a heavy commitment to forensic assessment of the evidence, either for the allegations (sometimes made anonymously, meaning that ORI had no way to determine the source the allegation) for referral to institutions, or in the evaluation of the resultant institutional findings. This was one of the more interesting silent jobs in science, as it provided many new opportunities ...

Rumor Has It… Currently, there are more than 116,000 patients awaiting an organ transplant in the United States. True. There are more than 116,000 patients in need of an organ right now. Someone is added to the national waiting list every 13 minutes.
Modern advances in science and medicine have made possible the prolongation of the lives of many seriously ill individuals, without always offering realistic prospects for improvement or cure. For some individuals the possibility of extended life is experienced as meaningful and of benefit. For others, artificial continuation of life may seem to provide nothing medically necessary or valuable, serving only to extend suffering and draw out the dying process. States recognize the inherent dignity and value of human life and within this context recognize the fundamental right of individuals to make the necessary health care decisions to have life-prolonging medical, surgical, or procedure means provided, withheld, or withdrawn ...
