Ladies and Gentlemen. Water impacts on our lives and our environment on a much wider scale. Water is a crucial factor in the climate change debate. There is also a linkage to natural disasters and their aftermath. As we recently witnessed in Haiti and Chile, one of the most pressing challenges facing the affected populations was the supply of drinking water and proper sanitation facilities.. Water related disasters are themselves a puzzle: while on one hand we have floods, tropical storms, typhoons, hurricanes and tsunamis, on the other, drought afflicts various parts of the world. This exacerbates the vulnerability, particularly of many developing countries, including Small Island Developing States. This dialogue provides an opportunity to underscore the connection between water, climate change and disaster risk management and the proactive engagement of all stakeholders to cope with these challenges. With increased demand for water and dwindling supply, the scramble for water resources is ...

SAMOA SIGNS NUCLEAR BAN TREATY In New York for the 72 United Nations General Assembly meeting, Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi on behalf of Samoa has endorsed the Treaty on the prohibition of nuclear weapons.. As a signatory to this historic treaty, we wanted to demonstrate unequivocally our aspiration to have a world without nuclear weapons, the Samoan leader told the United Nations General Assembly in his address.. The conventional narrative that the possession of nuclear weapons will act as deterrent to make the world a safer place to live, is not borne out by the current realities, otherwise the developments in the Korean peninsula would not have happened at all.. Tuilaepa reiterated that Samoa firmly believes that possessing nuclear weapons and adding new nuclear powers only make our world less safe, less secure, and less peaceful - hence the need to rid our world completely of all nuclear weapons.. No matter the noble goal for having such arsenals, availing them to the ...

When Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad arrives in New York to address the UN General Assembly it will be a cruel parody of law and justice that will put us on the wrong side of history. Simply put, this charade ignores and undermines basic principles of domestic, international, and humanitarian law. Ahmadinejad will enter the U.S. despite being inadmissible under American law. He will address the United Nations General Assembly despite being in violation of its UN Charter and international law. And, he will be indulged by universities, institutes, and the media, thereby sanitizing his crimes and mocking the suffering of the Iranian people ...

This advocacy document outlines why investing in the control and eradication of peste des petits ruminants is an investment in food security. PPR affects the livelihoods of more than 330 million of the worlds poorest people in over 70 countries in Africa, the Middle East and Asia. Eradicating PPR will help improve food security, nutrition, incomes and livelihood resilience of millions of poor farmers around the world. In response to calls from member countries, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the World Organisation for Animal Health have taken the lead in developing a Global Strategy for the control and eradication of PPR. United Nations September 21st high level meeting on Anti-Microbial Resistance (AMR) to shape the international agenda is an effort to use foreign policy realm to address increasingly complex health challenges.. Heads of the States, Heads of Delegations and other Global leaders will meet at the United Nations General Assembly, New York in September 2016 to review the situation and commit to fighting antimicrobial resistance globally. This is the fourth time in the history of the UN that a health topic is discussed at the General Assembly (HIV, noncommunicable diseases, and Ebola were the others).. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has become one of the biggest threats to global health and has the potential to upset several countries of their carefully created consensuses on development priorities. The differential impact of AMR on health systems of developed and developing countries needs to be significant and needs careful monitoring. This may further widen the health inequity gap within and ...

2. Resolution 2758 (XXVI) adopted by the General Assembly in 1971 violates the spirit of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights The Republic of China, a charter Member of the United Nations, participated conscientiously in all the activities of the Organization from 1945 to 1971. However, in 1971, as a result of the adoption of resolution 2758 (XXVI) by the General Assembly, the Republic of Chinas seat in the United Nations was transferred to the Peoples Republic of China. That action had the effect of depriving the Government and the people of the Republic of China of their right to participate in the activities of the United Nations and related agencies, as well as in other important international organizations.. For example, the Republic of China is not allowed to participate in the World Bank or International Monetary Fund. During the recent East Asian financial crisis, it was therefore unable to work formally with neighbouring countries to attenuate the severity of the crisis. In the ...
Ladies and Gentlemen, I am pleased to be taking part in this extraordinary assembly to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. I convey to you all the respectful greeting of His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI, who has asked me to convey to you all his cordial good wishes for the success of your work. Today, we are recording an important anniversary. It reminds us of the felicitous occasion of the establishment of the FAO that came into being to free humanity from the spectre of hunger by promoting agricultural projects in every country, with an effective cooperation between States. This is an ever timely goal. Indeed, it is becoming more urgent than ever in the face of a world situation in which peoples are affected by terrible and recurrent food crises, whereas there are other countries whose abundant production gives rise to numerous questions regarding their lifestyle. Today, the FAO is faced by a world which, despite certain painful ...

July 29, 2020 - Two major global environmental issues are food contamination and waste disposal. Professor Wong Ming-hung, Advisor (Environmental Science), and Dr. Brian Man Yu-bon, Assistant Professor, at the Department of Science and Environmental Studies at The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) have a solution for both.. Contamination and waste disposal are particularly relevant to Hong Kong, which ranks second in per capita seafood consumption in Asia and where, in 2018, over 1.5 kg of waste was sent to landfill sites each day. Eating fish and seafood has important health benefits. They are recognized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations as being important for optimal brain and neurodevelopment in children, as well as lowering the risk of coronary heart disease among adults.. However, contamination can bring along health and environmental risks. This doesnt merely come through polluted seas and rivers: it can also be present in the feed used in fish farms, ...

Goal-Based Development. The worlds governments have called for sustainable development goals and they are being negotiated in the United Nations general assembly. But does it really make a difference? Will a new set of goals somehow help the world to do what it hasnt yet been able to do? To shift from a business as usual and increasingly dangerous path of economic development to a path of true, sustainable development. Well here, we can look at some evidence, and I think it is pretty powerful evidence. And that is to ask, what have the Millennium Development Goals meant for the world? The UN adopted, in September 2000 in the General Assembly, the Millennium Declaration including the Millennium Development Goals. And as we have talked about it at some length, those eight goals became the centerpiece of the development effort for poor countries around the world. Did they really make a difference? The answer seems to be yes. That there has been a marked acceleration of poverty reduction, disease ...

As reports of the spread of bird flu mount, many have expressed concern about the ability of Central Asian countries to come to grips with the problem. There have also been concerns that the notoriously closed regime in Turkmenistan might be less than forthcoming about any outbreaks there. On 12 January, RFE/RL Turkmen Service correspondent Muhammad Tahir spoke with Erwin Northoff, news coordinator for the UNs Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), about the challenges facing Central Asian countries coping with bird flu.

In Saudi Arabia early last year, I was greatly honored to address the leaders of more than 50 Arab and Muslim nations. We agreed that all responsible nations must work together to confront terrorists and the Islamist extremism that inspires them.. We will stop radical Islamic terrorism because we cannot allow it to tear up our nation, and indeed to tear up the entire world.. We must deny the terrorists safe haven, transit, funding, and any form of support for their vile and sinister ideology. We must drive them out of our nations. As a sovereign nation, Palau conducts its own foreign relations.[16] Since independence, Palau has established diplomatic relations with a number of nations, including many of its Pacific neighbors, like Micronesia and the Philippines. On 29 November 1994, the United Nations Security Council passed Resolution 963 recommending Palaus admission to the United Nations. The United Nations General Assembly approved admission for Palau pursuant to Resolution 49/63 on 15 December 1994.[19] Palau has since joined several other international organizations. In September 2006, Palau hosted the first Taiwan-Pacific Allies Summit. Its President has made official visits to other Pacific countries, including Japan. [20]. The United States maintains a diplomatic delegation and an embassy in Palau, but most aspects of the countries relationship have to do with Compact-funded projects, which are the responsibility of the U.S. Department of the Interiors Office of Insular Affairs.[21]. As the quote above states, learning about genocide is more than a history lesson-it is an essential life lesson. Never forget. For this reason, the United Nations General Assembly designates each January 27-the anniversary of the liberation of concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau-as International Holocaust Remembrance Day. On this day, the United Nations encourages member states to commemorate the victims of the Holocaust and to develop educational programs to prevent future acts of genocide.. Why is the reparations movement in the Anglophone Caribbean not putting capitalism on trial in its campaign to force British imperialism to provide financial compensation for its industrial and agricultural capitalists enslavement of Africans? To what extent is capitalism such a sacred spirit or god whose name should not be publicly called in order to avoid attracting its vindictive and punishing rebuke? Are the advocates of reparations truly convinced that British imperialisms payment of financial compensation for the enslavement of Africans would end the economic marginalization of the labouring classes who are toiling under capitalist regimes throughout the region? Why are we willing to place racism or white supremacy in the dock but not its creator - capitalism?. In 1943, Abraham Maslow published a paper on human motivation: A Theory of Human Motivation. The ideas (and diagram) from that paper have been widely used in business schools and management training programs. But these same ideas can be applied to human rights. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, signed into life by UN General Assembly on 10 December 1948, just five years after the Maslows publication of A Theory of Human Motivation, echoes the work via a set of Articles stating the rights of every human being. Physiological Needs Article 25 of The Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that everyone is entitled to the right of adequate food (and presumably water is included), housing and clothing (for homeostasis control), and medical care. The right to medical care implies to me the right to live healthy, or at least healthy to the best of ability of a particular individual. This right to medical care as a universal right of all human beings can be interpreted to mean many ...

The picture gets even more complicated if one assigns meaning to the fact that cereal imports from China were reportedly lower in July this year compared to 2014. Figures from just one month might not indicate a trend, but given that July was a particularly dire month, these figures are still significant. If imports are being decreased because the official line is that agricultural conditions have improved, no matter the reality, that might be bad news for those in the North Korean public that rely on the public distribution system for any significant part of their consumption.. Either the FAO is right and the North Korean government wrong, or the other way around. Harvests this season cannot have been improving and getting worse at the same time. The FAO is probably far more likely than the North Korean government to have made a correct assessment here. Even if North Korean authorities arent claiming success of the reforms for propaganda reasons - which they may well be doing - it is hard to ...
Down syndrome occurs when an individual has an extra partial (or whole) copy of chromosome 21. It is not yet know why this syndrome occurs, but Down syndrome has always been a part of the human condition. It exists in all regions across the globe and commonly results in variable effects on learning styles, physical characteristics and health.. Adequate access to health care, to early intervention programmes, and to inclusive education, as well as appropriate research, are vital to the growth and development of the individual.. In December 2011, the General Assembly declared 21 March as World Down Syndrome Day (A/RES/66/149). The General Assembly decided, with effect from 2012, to observe World Down Syndrome Day on 21 March each year. In order to raise public awareness of Down syndrome, the General Assembly invites all Member States, relevant organizations of the United Nations system and other international organizations, as well as civil society, including non-governmental organizations and the ...
Early this morning, the United Nations force, Interfet, landed in East Timor. Reports indicate that revenge killings are going on until the last minute against pro-independence Timorese. There are reports that in just one day, 18th September, some 150 to 200 people were killed. The militias and the army are waging a scorched earth policy in their preparations to leave the country. A BBC journalist who visited Dili on Saturday 18th September described the capital as a smouldering cauldron of its former self. The United Nations Children Fund, UNICEF, estimates that approximately 500,000 people have been displaced, on the move or hiding in the mountains. Thats the greater part of the population. Food parcels have been dropped by the UN to avoid starvation of those who have been surviving on roots and plants. It seems that not all Indonesian troops will have left the island before the UN troops arrive. Militia leaders are also trying to form sanctuaries in the western part of East Timor, where ...

Feeding recommendations for infants of HIV-infected mothers in developing countries remain controversial. The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends that when replacement milk is acceptable, feasible, affordable, sustainable and safe, avoidance of all breast-feeding by HIV-infected mothers is recommended; otherwise, exclusive breastfeeding is recommended during the first months of life. WHO/UNAIDS/UNICEF recommend several variations of exclusive breastfeeding and replacement milk for infants of HIV-infected mothers. The replacement milks include commercial infant formula and home-prepared modifications of evaporated milk, powdered full cream milk (PM), and fresh full cream milk (FM).. Little is known about the nutritional adequacy and feasibility of breast milk replacement options recommended by WHO/UNAIDS/UNICEF. A recent study set out to explore suitability of the 2001 feeding recommendations for infants of HIV-infected mothers in a rural region of KwaZulu Natal, South Africa. The study ...
Professionals in different disciplines identified and defined Parental Alienation as the pervasive practice of one parent against the other parent to destroy the parent-child relationship with the targeted parent. This is usually done with the intent to gain financial benefits.. Since 1990, the year that The Convention on the Rights of the Child entered into force, a more pernicious form of Parental Alienation permeated parent-child relationship. Parental Alienation is now perpetrated not only by alienating parents, but States, judicial systems and child protection services profiteering. Children are forcible, cruelly and brutally removed from their homes without any evidence or proof that the alienated mother or father is harmful to the child.. In order to comply with the annual resolutions suggested by civil society (NGOs) to the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child, UN Member States Parties initiated, developed and endorse the ongoing global war persecuting parents and snatching children. ...

The launch of a high-yielding dwarf rice variety by the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) on Nov 28, 1966 marked the beginning of Asia s struggle for freedom from hunger. Perhaps drawn by the promise of the miracle rice the IR8 rice variety -- the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) dedicated 1966 as the International Rice Year. Thirty-eight years later, as the United Nations dedicates 2004 to the world s most important staple food once again, celebrating it as the International Year of Rice, the starchy grain has undergone a complete metamorphosis. In 1966, the miracle rice seeds that ushered in the green revolution belonged to the species Oryza sativa -- a mankind s heritage. Since the time the indica variety of wild rice was known to be growing in the northern and southern slopes of the Himalayas and that was some 15,000 years ago rice has been regarded as probably God s greatest gift to human society. Staple food for more than half the world s population, ...
