Recent studies have investigated local oscillations, long-range connectivity, and global network patterns to identify neural changes associated with anesthetic-induced unconsciousness. These studies typically employ anesthetic protocols that either just cross the threshold of unconsciousness, or induce deep unconsciousness for a brief period of time-neither of which models general anesthesia for major surgery. To study neural patterns of unconsciousness and recovery in a clinically-relevant context, we used a realistic anesthetic regimen to induce and maintain unconsciousness in 8 healthy participants for three hours. High-density electroencephalogram (EEG) was acquired throughout and for another three hours after emergence. Seven epochs of 5-minute eyes-closed resting states were extracted from the data at baseline as well as 30, 60, 90, 120, 150 and 180 minutes post-emergence. Additionally, 5-minute epochs were extracted during induction, unconsciousness and immediately prior to recovery of

The mechanisms underlying anesthesia-induced loss of consciousness remain a matter of debate. Recent electrophysiological reports suggest that while initial propofol infusion provokes an increase in fast rhythms (from beta to gamma range), slow activity (from delta to alpha range) rises selectively during loss of consciousness. Dynamic causal modeling was used to investigate the neural mechanisms mediating these changes in spectral power in humans. We analyzed source-reconstructed data from frontal and parietal cortices during normal wakefulness, propofol-induced mild sedation, and loss of consciousness. Bayesian model selection revealed that the best model for explaining spectral changes across the three states involved changes in corticothalamic interactions. Compared with wakefulness, mild sedation was accounted for by an increase in thalamic excitability, which did not further increase during loss of consciousness. In contrast, loss of consciousness per se was accompanied by a decrease in ...
2005 Yoo, Jin-Sang Professor at Kaywon College of Art and Design/Director of Kukje Gallery, Seoul Korea. We call the space where the objects and events exist in the unconsciousness. The negative implication of the term, unconsciousness is originated from our conscious-oriented or the speech-oriented perspective. In fact if we allow ourselves a little distance from the consciousness, rather the self-centered system, we can find the subjectivity in the semantic system that has been blanketed most of the elements in the world. Unconsciousness forces you to consider relationship between the objects and events that happen through such relationships to be accidental, improbable, or even insane. Above all, the unconsciousness, which is residing outside awareness, is declared as the category encompassing non-existential things that language cannot define. Nevertheless, what only exists in reversed sense is unconscious matters because consciousness, or the objectives understood by semantics are the ...

WDT Hospital got best DMC (Designated Microscopy Centers (DMC) in implementing Revised National T.B. Control Programme in Rayadurg T.B. Unit.. CASE STUDY:. On 27-08-2014, a 25 year old male patient Mareppa, resident of Rangachedu village was brought to the hospital in an unconscious state. He is a known patient of Diabetes on inj. Insulin. He was an old patient of our hospital. After the previous admission he was advised injection Insulin and other medications. But because of ignorance and inability to understand the complexity of disease, he was not following the instructions properly and was not taking his insulin and other medications regularly.. On the morning of 27-08-2014, he developed breathlessness and unconsciousness because of high levels of glucose in blood (a condition called as diabetic coma) and was brought to our hospital. At the arrival, his clinical condition was very poor. He was in a state of unconsciousness with deep breathing, and grossly dehydrated. His breath was ...
A cohort of 2747 patients with head injuries was followed for 28,176 person-years to determine the magnitude and duration of the risk of posttxaumatic seizures. Injuries were classified as severe (brain contusion, intracerebral or intracranial hematoma, or 24 hours of either unconsciousness or amnesia), moderate (skull fracture or 30 minutes to 24 hours of unconsciousness or amnesia), and mild (briefer unconsciousness or amnesia). The risk of posttraumatic seizures after severe injury was 7.1% within 1 year and 11.5% in 5 years, after moderate injury the risk was 0.7 and 1.6%, and after mild injury the risk was 0.1 and 0.6%. The incidence of seizures after mild head injuries was not significantly greater than in the general population.. ...
In the practice of medicine (especially surgery and dentistry), anesthesia or anaesthesia is a state of temporary induced loss of sensation or awareness. It may include analgesia (relief from or prevention of pain), paralysis (muscle relaxation), amnesia (loss of memory), or unconsciousness. A patient under the effects of anesthetic drugs is referred to as being anesthetized. Anesthesia enables the painless performance of medical procedures that would cause severe or intolerable pain to an unanesthetized patient. Three broad categories of anaesthesia exist: General anesthesia suppresses central nervous system activity and results in unconsciousness and total lack of sensation. Sedation suppresses the central nervous system to a lesser degree, inhibiting both anxiety and creation of long-term memories without resulting in unconsciousness. Regional anesthesia and local anesthesia, which block transmission of nerve impulses between a targeted part of the body and the central nervous system, causing ...

The most common application of this instrument is to maneuver the ET tube in nasal intubations. The Magill forceps is used to pick up the ET tube in the posterior oropharynx and place its tip into the laryngeal inlet. The forceps grip surface is serrated and care must be taken not to rupture the cuff when maneuvering the ET tube. Ideally the endotracheal tube should therefore be held with the forceps just proximal to the cuff. For the same reason only airway equipment and not tissue should be maneuvered with the forceps as significant trauma and bleeding can result.. The Magill forceps can also be useful in clearing foreign bodies from the upper airway in anesthetized or unconscious patients.. Another use of the device is in placing and removing throat packs.. ...
French summarizes this model by saying : "the most popular interpretation is that the NDE is exactly what it appears to be to the person having the experience".[5] The NDE would then represent evidence of the supposedly immaterial existence of a soul or mind, which would leave the body upon death. An NDE would then provide information about an immaterial world where the soul would journey upon ending its physical existence on earth.[5] According to Greyson[11] some NDE phenomena cannot be easily explained with our current knowledge of human physiology and psychology. For instance, at a time when they were unconscious patients could accurately describe events as well as report being able to view their bodies "from an out-of-body spatial perspective". In two different studies of patients who had survived a cardiac arrest, those who had reported leaving their bodies could describe accurately their resuscitation procedures or unexpected events, whereas others "described incorrect equipment and ...
Semi-conscious or unconscious patients with respiratory depression have more chances of experiencing problems like aspirating vomiting into lungs or choking.. Abusive effects. Benzodiazepines have high potential of being abused, and Xanax is particularly bad owing to its short action duration and rapid onset. Patients who already have a history of substance abuse have higher risks of become addicted to Xanax, even if it was originally used as a prescription medicine. Additionally, because Methadone is given to patients with existing abuse issues, it poses significant risks of abuse.. Benzodiazepines should not be given to patients for maintenance therapy, as anxiety can be treated with other better choices too, such as antidepressants. Benzodiazepines are more appropriate for very short-term treatment of acute anxiety disorders, like panic attacks. As soon as the treatment starts showing effects, benzodiazepines should be avoided as far as possible.. Now that you know what dangers the ...
The more you become curious about what is happening rather than reacting and controlling, the more you come to a wonderful realization that your life is for you.. Rather than Life being something that is happening to you that you must control, you realize there are no ordinary moments!. Life is not a random series of events. It is a highly intelligent unfolding that is putting you in the exact situations you need in order to see and unhook from the spells that keep you separate from its flow.. No matter what is happening in your life, you finally understand that Life knows what it is doing.. Rather than Life being something you have to mold and shape into what you want it to be, you begin to show up for Life exactly as it is. Yes, the flow of Life includes pain, loss and death.. But resisting the pains of Life only turn them it into suffering, and the suffering that comes from resistance is always much greater than directly experiencing your pain.. Instead of tightening around your experiences ...
Anesthesia is the temporary loss of sensation induced by drugs that interfere with how nerves communicate. Prior to the advent of modern anesthesia, surgical procedures were often avoided as much as possible. Doctors would have to endure the screams of pain as they operated on a patient. To weaken the sensation of surgical incisions, alcohol, opium, and various herbal remedies were used. Sometimes the patient would be physically knocked unconscious prior to surgery.. It was difficult to control the amount of anesthesia given, which posed a safety issue. Too much anesthesia can cause neurological damage, while too little is ineffective. Nowadays, thanks to technological advances, it is possible to control the dosage of anesthesia required to instate and maintain unconsciousness. It makes surgery safer while ensuring that the patient is not in any pain.. The purpose of anesthesia is to sedate, immobilize, and induce unconsciousness, and inability to feel pain. It functions by absorbing into ...

PHILADELPHIA - Falling asleep in your bed at night and being "put to sleep" under general anesthesia - as well as waking up in the morning or coming out of anesthesia - arent quite the same thing, yet they share some important similarities. Max Kelz, MD, PhD, assistant professor of Anesthesiology and Critical Care at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, along with colleagues from Penn, UCSD, Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and Thomas Jefferson University, explored the distinctions between anesthetic unconsciousness and sleep by manipulating the genetic pathways known to be involved in natural sleep and studying the resulting effects on anesthetic states. Their work is published in PLOS Genetics.. Previous research by Kelzs team pointed to a neurological barrier, called neural inertia, that separates awareness from anesthetic unconsciousness and resists the transition from one state to the other. They also found that the processes by which the brain enters ...
That means gunk in the groundwater can rise through the soil in gaseous form and collect in above-ground structures like homes, schools and churches. If youre living over a TCE plume, like inhabitants in Scottsdale Arizona who dont have specialized ventilation systems, it might be a good idea to keep the windows open.. Drinking small amounts of TCE for long periods may cause impaired immune system function, liver and kidney damage and impair fetal development in pregnant women. Larger drinking doses may cause liver damage, nausea, impaired heart function, unconsciousness or death. Breathing small amounts may cause dizziness, lung irritation, headaches, difficulty concentrating and poor coordination. Inhaling large amounts of TCE may cause unconsciousness, impaired heart function and death.. The TCE exposure level associated with a one-in-a-million excess lifetime cancer risk, in a round-the-clock residential scenario is being lowered to .25 micrograms per cubic meter, or ug/m3. I was standing downtown but everything seemed different. What had happened? Id just been at the library when all of sudden I found myself standing here a block away and everything seemed suddenly strange. How am I in one place on second and another place the next second? This wasnt a dream, I was sure of it. There was very little I recognized. Buildings were different, peculiar looking. There were many more of them. And there are all these people, so many more than usual and theyre dressed in the strangest ways. Men have hair like women. There are a lot of negroes about and crazy people and the cars, my god the cars practically look like futuristic space ships. Some people look it at me kind of funny but Im sure not the strangest looking person around. Its like Im in the future. So you asked about recent films Ive seen (no you didnt I just used that phrase as a device to segue into this last bit). Okay here goes: The Big Parade (1925) starring John Gilbert directed by King Vidor. A mostly very good picture but featuring the greatest scene ever filmed when the U.S. Army is pulling out of the French town. Just watch the damn thing, its incredible. Then there was Christmas in Connecticut (1945) starring the great love of one of my past lives, Barbara Stanwyck. I think Ive watched it about seven Christmas seasons in a row and havent tired of it a wit. Its perfectly fun and charming and delightful. Mon Oncle Antoine (1971) I just discovered this - lets say "holiday treat" - last year. It has been hailed by Canada as that countrys greatest film and who am I to argue? It is set in a very small French Canadian village around and on Christmas. Its got the whole coming of age vibe but not in a corny way. Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale (2010) is a Christmas film from my ...
In the current study, the area under the ROC curve was used as a measure of the performance of the best models. For a comparison of two levels (i.e. , consciousness and unconsciousness in the current study), the area under the ROC curve is comparable to prediction probability (PK).21 The area under the ROC curve is a value between 0.5 and 1, whereas PKis a value in the range between 0 and 1. A value of 0.5 means that the parameter indicates the anesthetic state as good as a random process, e.g. , flipping a coin. A PK(or ROC area) of 1 means a correct classification in 100%, and a PKvalue of 0 means a false identification in 100%. Using a very similar study design, a previous study showed that BIS® (Aspect Medical Systems) and Patient State Index (Physiometrix, North Billerica, MA), two commercially available monitors based on the electroencephalogram, only have a prediction probability (PK) of less than 0.7.22 These values are confirmed by results of the analysis of BIS values from recorded ...
1. Consciousness is original, self-existent, and constitutive of all things. Wolffs term Consciousness here does not mean consciousness as opposed to unconsciousness. Nor does Wolff use the word Consciousness here as a consciousness involving any particular structure or mode of experience, such as the structure of intentionality, or the mode of our typical experience based on the distinction between subject and object. Rather, the meaning of the term Consciousness here is THAT which is the primordial ground and essential nature of all modes and forms of experience, both subjective and objective. In Wolffs words, The One, nonderivative Reality, is THAT which I have symbolized by Consciousness- without-an-object. This is Root Consciousness, per se, to be distinguished from consciousness as content or as state, on the one hand, and from consciousness as an attribute of a Self or Atman, in any sense whatsoever. It is Consciousness of which nothing can be predicated in the privative sense ...
Ion channels are pathways that allow electrically charged atoms to pass across cell membranes to carry out various functions such as pain transmission and the timing of the heart beat. TRPC5 calcium ion channels are found in many tissues around the body but are predominant in the brain.. "We know that this ion channel plays a signalling role in the central nervous system, which regulates the conscious and unconscious states, so I was left wondering whether inhibiting this calcium ion channel was one mechanism by which anaesthesia works," says Dr Bahnasi.. Dr Bahnasi then carried out further experiments with several other modern anaesthetic compounds, both intravenous and inhaled, and found that the blocking effect on the TRPC5 ion channel was the same.. He says that the discovery opens up the opportunity to design and develop new generations of anaesthetics which directly target TRPC5, but with minimised side effects.. "Of course there are multi-molecular events that work together in ...
Findings and conclusions of a workshop on sudden loss of consciousness in divers, held in Madison, Wisconsin, are presented. In a study of 150 episodes of diver loss of consciousness, the divers in over half of the cases had no advance warning. In cases where some warning signs were noted, the major factor was a respiratory problem. Possible causes of diver unconsciousness are outlined. Predisposi

Is my yellow the same as your yellow? Does your pain feel like my pain? The question of whether the human consciousness is subjective or objective is largely philosophical. But the line between consciousness and unconsciousness is a bit easier to measure. In a new study of how anesthetic drugs affect the brain, researchers suggest…

BACKGROUND: Being awake during anaesthesia is a serious complication. An anaesthetic depth monitor must discriminate in real time between wakefulness and unconsciousness. The present study created a period of wakefulness during propofol-induced hypnosis. Bispectral index (BIS), explicit and implicit memories of the awake period were investigated. METHODS: Ten volunteers were studied. The calculated brain concentration of a target controlled infusion of propofol was increased until loss of response (LOR) to verbal command and then propofol was stopped ...
A separate, but closely related point should also be made about the term "consciousness" which is used rather haphazardly by both scientists and laypersons to refer to a range of different phenomena (Chalmers, 1995). A basic conception of consciousness is experiential awareness or alertness, which is defined in contrast to unconsciousness (e.g., being awake as opposed to being in a deep sleep or a coma). Consciousness, from this viewpoint, can exist on many levels and possess varying degrees of complexity, all of which are simply characterized by the presence of subjective or phenomenal experience (Velmans, 2009). For example, every person experiences many degrees of alertness, a variety of emotions, as well as many other subjective phenomena over the course of a given day. There is no one conscious state that can be defined, there are rather, many overlapping, but differentiable states, some simple and some quite complex; some describable and some inscrutable. By this definition, although their ...

May 20, 2013 (La Mesa) - A man who reportedly choked his girlfriend until she lost consciousness and threw her against a closet is under arrest for stabbing his girlfriends brother. La Mesa Police received a report of the stabbing at 1:43 a.m. in the 7100 block of Waite Drive. When officers arrived, they found the brother, 21, lying near a sidewalk and rendered treatment. A perimeter was set up and the suspect, Mark Hernandez Cervantes, 28, of San Diego surrendered shortly after.. During the investigation, officers learned of the altercation between the suspect and his girlfriend prior to the stabbing. When she regained consciousness, the victim called her mother, who came to the apartment with the young womans brother. The female victim did not require medical attention. ...
Success. Accompanying the awakening of her consciousness, that feeling spread through her body. Nina who had been thrown into the air by the shockwave produced from her Kei explosion was even now still in the air. She had only lost consciousness for a moment. Her eardrums were assaulted by the sound of a hurricane. Her vision was blotted out by strong light, and her skin was immersed in strong shockwaves. She felt numb because of these confused senses. Her eardrums...... Did it seem like her hearing had held through? No. It was just that her hearing was the first to return. "Ah......" As if coughing out something from inside her throat, Nina made a sound. In the next moment, when her entire body could feel the circulation of the heat of Kei, her five senses recovered. "Ugh!" The strong light before her could create new confusion. Nina endured this, confirming the situation. "This is......?" It was the sky. Nina looked at the sun, and lowering her eyes was the ground. SAN REMO, Italy (VN) - Colombian rider Carlos Quintero will spend the night in an Italian hospital after suffering a concussion, but he is not facing life-threatening injuries in the wake of a nasty fall in Milan-San Remo.. For a few moments Saturday afternoon it looked like cycling was facing another worst-case scenario when the Colombia-Coldeportes rider crashed heavily on the descent of Le Mànie. Television images of doctors hurriedly treating the Coldeportes rider brought back the horrible images of last years Giro dItalia, when Wouter Weylandt died during a similar high-speed fall.. There was no official word from the team, but race officials confirmed that Quintero suffered a concussion and momentarily lost consciousness in the wake of his crash.. He was later transported to a hospital where a CT scan ruled out any serious brain injury. X-rays revealed a fracture to his left cheekbone and shoulder blade and a contusion to his left lung. Doctors are keeping him in the hospital overnight ...
It was a "standard" interscalene block for shoulder surgery, a single injection of a ropivacaine/tetracaine mixture under ultrasound guidance. But then the convulsion started; the patient lost consciousness and stopped breathing. The blood pressure dropped, but sinus rhythm was maintained. The anesthesiologist reported: I sort of froze: Four people were doing a lot of things at once, it was chaotic, but I remembered to get the checklist. The checklist he remembered was the ASRA guideline for managing local anesthetic toxicity (LAST) that he had just simulated at a meeting, and which was now posted on the operating room wall. The checklist was read out loud; administration of a large dose of propofol (drawn up and being connected to the IV) was immediately stopped and Intralipid™ given instead in the correct dose. After following the steps on the list, the patient awakened with no permanent complications, and received surgery at a later date. .... [more]. ...
Yet sometimes, rarely, we find ourselves wondering whether we are experiencing a miracle. During my week in the intensive care unit, I admitted a patient who had a witnessed cardiac arrest. She came into the hospital with nausea, chest pain, and diaphoresis. While the emergency department was putting her on the monitor, she said she wasnt feeling so great, and on the EKG, they saw her flip from sinus rhythm into ventricular fibrillation. She lost consciousness, and the emergency department started chest compressions and defibrillated her heart. No matter what they did, however, they could not get her heart to stay in a perfusing rhythm. She got multiple rounds of epinephrine, lidocaine, amiodarone, atropine. She ended up being shocked over twenty times. She had compressions for over an hour. When I arrived, the floor was littered with empty syringes, open code trays, discarded equipment. But just as we were about to call it, that is, to say that there was nothing we could do to salvage this ...

Stephen R. Taufen, a prolific writer on commercial fishing issues, was air ambulanced to Anchorage, and was hospitalized at Providence Hospital with an inoperable hematoma. Stephen was in intensive care for a few days, and later, out of intensive care, was lucid, and appeared to be recovering. Stephens hematoma began growing again, he lost consciousness and, with family advice and consent, has been removed from life support. Stephen passed away this morning at 03:45. He was the Founder of Groundswell Fisheries Movement. Truthfully, we have lost a great man who cannot be replaced. We extend our sympathy and sorrow to all that know him, his mother, his brother, and his friends. Steve was a man with heart, dignity, and fairness. measurement of cardiac oscillations in this case is justified, if a person, for example, lost consciousness. The radial artery at the wrist may not be probed. Therefore, it is important to check the pulse in the carotid artery. And this is done so: 1. The patient is laid on his back, and then the man who admitted to carrying out this manipulation, his fingers (index and middle), folded in parallel, slowly holding the neck of the patient from top to bottom. He should move from the base of the lower jaw to the place where the throat.. 2. If a person does everything correctly, the pulse of the patient must be palpable in a small pit.. 3. It is prohibited for the event press on the area that is checked too, because it can lead to circulatory problems and even fainting.. ...
Meredith and I feel bad that we havent blogged since she has been home from the hospital. She came home on Monday and didnt vomit once...until last night. She was going to the bathroom about 8pm and I was called in because she was vomiting. She said that she had hit her head on the bathtub and thought that she had blacked out. Just then she slumped and lost consciousness. Her eyes stayed open, but she had a blank stare and was not responding. I ran into the other room, grabbed my phone and called 911. I laid her down, per the 911 operator, and the ambulance arrived about 5 minutes after she had initially passed out. By the time I let the paramedics in she was waking up but still very disoriented. Rusty had come home to us that night and was very confused as to why he was being shut in the kitchen. Her blood pressure was 85/45, but the paramedics said that she was fine. I got a hold of our oncologist, Dr. Bernstein, who said that as a precaution we should go to the hospital. I called Bobby and ...
Part 10. "How is this possible!?". After arriving at the Academy, Ash gasped, and he stood frozen on the spot.. "This is a joke, right…?". Beside Ash, Eco was also flabbergasted and lost for words.
