Umbilicus rupestris (Navelwort, Penny-pies, Wall Pennywort) is a fleshy, perennial, edible flowering plant in the stonecrop family Crassulaceae (in the genus Umbilicus) so named for its umbilicate (navel-like) leaves. Wall pennywort grows to an average of 25 cm (9.8 in) high. The pallid spikes of bell-shaped, greenish-pink flowers of this plant first appear in May, and the green fruits ripen through the summer. Both the name navelwort and the scientific name Umbilicus come from the round shape of the leaves, which have a navel-like depression in the center. The plant is found in southern and western Europe, often growing on shady walls or in damp rock crevices that are sparse in other plant growth (thus, wall pennywort), where its succulent leaves develop in rosettes. It is not at present under threat. Umbilicus rupestris is not the same Pennywort as the one used in Asian medicine, which is the unrelated Asiatic Pennywort, Centella asiatica. Umbilicus rupestris is used in homeopathic ...

The median umbilical ligament or Xanders ligament is a structure in human anatomy. It is a shrivelled piece of tissue that represents the remnant of the embryonic urachus. It extends from the apex of the bladder to the umbilicus, on the deep surface of the anterior abdominal wall. It is unpaired. It is covered by the median umbilical fold Lateral to this structure are the medial umbilical ligament (which is a different structure, not to be confused) and the lateral umbilical ligament. It may be used as a landmark for surgeons who are performing laparoscopy, such as laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair. Other than this, it has no function in a born human and may be cut or removed with impunity. The following post from our forum is from a woman who tells us that losing a belly button from a tummy tuck operation is not that uncommon.. Date: 03/17/2010 Submitted by: Christy. Actually they can remove the belly button. I just left the PS and he told me that my belly button wont make it. I would have to lose the belly button in order to do a tummy tuck. Also, that it is more common than you would think. I spoke to a friend on the way home and she had known someone who lost theirs in a tummy tuck.. Christy. RESPONSE. Date: 03/17/2010 Submitted by: Tanner. Christy,. I never heard that before. My plastic surgeon never even brought up the possibility that could happen. Even if he did, I probably would have proceeded with the tummy tuck. Nobody would know I didnt have a belly button since I have a shirt on 99.99% of the time.. Laparoscopic ovariectomy (LapOVE) using single-portal access was attempted in 17 client-owned cats of different breeds admitted for elective ovariectomy. A 12 mm umbilical portal was placed 1 cm caudal to the umbilicus with the cat in dorsal recumbency. Then, a laparoscope with an operating channel was introduced into the portal with the cat in lateral recumbency. The right ovary was pulled to the abdominal wall using grasping forceps and fixed to the abdominal wall by a transabdominal suspension suture. The ovarian vasculature, suspensory ligament and proper ligament were progressively cauterised and transected with multifunction bipolar electrocoagulation forceps. The resected right ovary was exteriorised through the umbilical portal cannula. The left ovary was then removed from the abdomen in a similar fashion. Surgical time, intraoperative haemorrhage, amount of fat in the ovarian ligament, surgical complications and postoperative pain were recorded. The mean (sd) surgical time was 23 ...

We report a recently observed case of primary umbilical endometriosis without previous pelvic surgery. A 41-year-old Japanese woman complained of umbilical nodular tumor. Histopathology revealed endometriosis of an approximate 10 mm resected mass. The stromal cells in endometriosis were immunohistochemically positive for CD10. Two months later the first umbilical surgery, she underwent a left salpingo-oophorectomy and release of adhesion around the left adnexa under a laparoscope. She was treated with dienogest (2 mg/day) for six months after four injections of GnRH analogue for four months. After three years of the follow-up, there were no signs of local relapse and no clinical and ultrasonographic abnormalities due to endometriosis.

The umbilicus or belly button is a scar that heals after the umbilical cord detaches from the body following birth. Its shape is determined by the attachment of ones skin to the underlying muscle. Doctors say that the way in which this scar forms or attaches to the muscle is arbitrary. Dr. Michael Bermant, a plastic surgeon, explains that innie scars curve into the deepest component of that area and outie scars heal with an extra bubble of tissue. The shape of the belly button is also influenced by the tightness of ones skin, the amount of fat under the skin, or occurrences such as umbilical hernias. Typically, umbilicoplasty may be performed in an outpatient setting under local anesthesia, normally lasting about one hour. The surgery usually takes place in a doctors office operating room, but a surgical facility may be used if the umbilicoplasty is combined with other plastic surgical procedures, such as a tummy tuck. In his article, Umbilicoplasty: conversion of outie to innie, ...
A 24-year-old Italian woman was admitted to our Department because of a big reddish nodule in the navel area that had appeared about one year before (Fig. 1). Her medical history was unremarkable. She denied any prior abdominal or pelvic trauma or surgeries. Physical examination demonstrated a 4-cm tender nodule, centered by a papule with a purplish color. The patient indicated that the lesion had progressively enlarged and that it was cyclically painful. On histopathological examination, numerous cystic cavities, different in shape and dimension, were present in the dermis, embedded in a vascular and cellular stroma (Fig. 2). These glands were composed of a single columnar cell layer that tended to flake off into the lumen. There was no cellular atypia or other evidence of malignancy (Fig. 3). Laser body sculpting is done with a tiny laser fiber instead of a large surgical incision which leaves noticeable scars. Unlike traditional liposculpting or liposculpture with liposuction alone, laser body sculpting does not leave loose skin and contour deformities when the laser procedure is done properly.. After your laser body sculpting procedure, you will not have large visible scars or a prolonged, often painful recovery. The tiny incisions used in laser body sculpting are about 1/4 inch long and placed in hidden areas such as the belly button or umbilicus.. Another advantage of our laser body sculpting procedure is that the tiny laser fiber can reach areas of the body to melt fat and tighten skin in areas that traditional plastic surgery body sculpting cannot reach. For example, a mini tummy tuck can tighten the lower tummy but cannot remove fat and tighten skin in the upper abdomen above the belly button or umbilicus. The laser fiber used in our laser body sculpting procedures can easily ...
Usually occurring within the first six days after birth. The severed umbilical cord is an open wound liable to infection. The cause is usually a staphylococcus, whose source must be sought in the immediate surroundings. Tetanus infection can also occur, probably as a result of poor hygiene. If infection sets in, the skin around the navel becomes red and swollen, and the navel itself discharges fluid containing pus. The principal danger is contamination via the large blood vessels behind the navel, which can lead to blood poisoning (sepsis). Umbilical infection can be avoided by binding the remaining section of the umbilical cord with sterile gauze and handling the baby in as hygienic a manner as possible. If infection neverthless occurs, it can be treated with antibiotics.. ...

CONNOLLY (Connelly), MARY, named Sister Mary Clare, member of the Sisters of Charity of Halifax and teacher; baptized 6 June 1840, aged two days, in Halifax, daughter of Patrick Connolly and Mary Broderick (Brauderick, Brawdorick); d. 10 April 1922 in Wellesley, Mass.. Mary Connollys parents were part of a wave of Irish Catholic immigration to Canada in the 19th century. They married in Halifax on 28 Aug. 1839, and Mary, their first child, was born the following year. The family included two other children who would become religious: Catherine also entered the Sisters of Charity of Halifax and John J. became a Jesuit. The Connolly family belonged to St Marys Cathedral parish and the children attended the parochial school. William John Sainsbury-Woods, a Hampshire man, and Elizabeth Barnes, a Dorset girl, met in college in Winchester England. After their graduation they decided to pool their educational resources and start teaching school, he as principal or master, and she as assistant master in the same school. The last little one, Margaret Mary, was to outlive all her family and die at the grand age of 92, a venerable member of the St. Sisters of Providence of St. Vincent de Paul, known to them as Sister Mary Dunstan.. In an effort to improve their income, the parents moved the family home several times as the children were growing up, each time taking a bigger school, and the father added to his education, eventually obtaining a Masters degree at Oxford. He learned to read and speak Greek, Latin and French with as easy fluency as he did English and was an excellent musician. This latter talent, he put to use to bring in a little more ...

Worse, her liver was studded with dozens of tumor deposits that practically filled its entire substance, and there were several small masses in her lungs. Cullen1916 header}} =Chapter XXXII. Large Urachal Cysts= Historic sketch. Symptoms. Differential diagnosis; personal observations on a large diffuse neuroma of the bladder. Treatment. Detailed report of large, non-infected urachal cysts. The small urachal cysts that we have considered rarely reached 1 cm. in diameter, and were naturally readily overlooked clinically. Probably one of the first urachal cysts ever opened was the one observed by Peu in 1648, and recorded in his Pratique des Accouchements, 1694, p. 38, and recently referred to by Wutz. The patient was a child two hours old. Situated at the umbilicus was a tumor the size of a pigeons egg. It was opened, and a serum-like fluid escaped. This proved to be urine, and on the following morning urine escaped in a jet from the umbilicus.. Atlee, in 1873, in his treatise on Ovarian Tumors, reported the case of a girl eighteen years old. When opening the abdomen for the removal of an ovarian tumor he accidentally incised a urachal cyst ...

4) i am a young woman with Aspergers Syndrome, which means i have atrocious, near-debilitating ADHD (a common co-morbid of Aspergers). i live in an apartment below a child who jumps and runs and bounces balls at all hours of the day and night. the neighbors on my floor slam their doors 50 times in an hour. the guy downstairs blasts heavy metal and cusses at 200 decibels anytime theres a football game on. at work, i share an office with two chatty cathys who never give me any peace. i cant even go hide out somewhere in my car, because i am too poor to have a car. there is nowhere-literally NOWHERE-i can go to to enjoy peace and quiet. when i pray at home, i often put in earplugs AND turn on Gregorian chant to drown out the noise of neighbors, just so i can focus for all of 20 minutes to say a rosary. why dont i go to church to pray, you ask? because, for one, i am in a small parish where the church is locked at 5 pm sharp. and two, because CHURCH ISNT QUIET. NO PLACE in my world is quiet. ...
I had no idea, on Thursday night, when I posted on my sister Mary Anne, on her struggle with mental illness, and also that of my parents to speak to her dignity, and her needs, that a terrible act of violence would unfold on Friday morning (see that post HERE). And while all the facts are not before us, it would seem that, mental illness, and how we as a society deal with the mentally ill, is central to the tragedy that unfolded in Connecticut.. I want to speak to you, in a personal way, as someone who has experienced in his own family the devastating impact of mental illness. I want to write of the struggle to deal with it in a way that respects the dignity of the mentally ill and also the need to protect the common good.. As for my sister Mary Anne and of her 30 year struggle with mental illness, I wrote last week. She had moments of great lucidity, and peace. But these moments were often punctuated by deep troubles, wherein she heard the voices who instructed her to do terrible things, acts ...
I admit that I bristle sometimes at the notions people have. The other day I was walking to the Post Office along a very narrow sidewalk that stretches for blocks on end all along the marina here. Its a beautiful walk with all the boats in the harbor on one side and a bike path on the other. But for a long stretch its a narrow sidewalk right next to two lanes of on coming traffic and a big curve in the road. I cant tell you how many times Ive walked it, and every single time I worry that one false move by any driver, distracted by a phone call or text, or the guy in the next lane crossing his lane line and the driver next to me swerving just slightly to miss him and Im mowed down like a corn stalk in the fall ...

A hernia is when part of the intestine bulges through the muscle wall thats supposed to hold it in place. With an umbilical hernia, the opening is in the middle of the belly button, at a part of the abdominal wall called the umbilical ring.. The umbilical ring is a muscle that surrounds the belly button. During pregnancy, the umbilical cord flows through the umbilical ring to bring blood and nutrients to the developing baby. The umbilical ring should close shortly after birth. If it doesnt close correctly, the intestines can poke through. This can cause a bulge near the belly button, especially when the baby cries, coughs, or strains.. ...

Eight weeks in the past, after Mohinder leaves, Samuel confronts Joseph about what he overheard and Joseph tells him to meet him later. In a field of tall grass, Samuel and Joseph meet with Hiro and Lydia secretly watching nearby. Joseph tells Samuel about how his power is able to be amplified but refuses to explain how and says he told Mohinder to burn the film explaining it. Joseph says that amplified, Samuels power has the potential to level cities and mountains and he has given up his whole life to keep Samuel from achieving that power and indicates that his current life is not the one he wants. Joseph also reveals that he called in Danko to take Samuel away and gave him a compass in order to be able to find him. In anger, Samuel propels a rock through Josephs throat, mortally wounding him. Samuel holds him as he dies, regretful and remorseful for his action as he didnt ...

The procedure to repair an umbilical hernia is performed using an open technique. A curved incision is made just below the umbilicus (belly button). The herniation, which is usually just some intrabdominal fat through the defect in the muscle sheath is identified and resected. If the defect is small (less than 5mm) then a simple suture repair is undertaken. If it is larger than this than a disc of special mesh, which prevents the adhesion of bowel onto the mesh, is inserted deep to the muscle sheath layer and secured in place with multiple sutures so as to prevent displacement. The umbilicus is then reconstructed by attaching the deep aspect of the skin down to the mesh. Finally the wound is closed in layers with absorbable sutures that do not need to be removed. The wound is injected with long acting local anaesthetic and covered with a dressing. The patient is then transferred to recovery and then back to either day surgery if going home on the same day or to the ward if staying ...

We often hear parents tell us that their baby has an outie and grandmother would recommend putting a coin on the umbilicus to strap it down to help make this better. An outie is a bulge on the umbilicus which is more prominent when the baby cries, coughs or strains. We call this anumbilical hernia. This is due to the imperfect closure or weakness of the muscles in the umbilical ring. The size of the defect ranges from 1cm to 5cm but larger ones are rare. Most umbilical hernia that appear before 6 months of age will resolve by 1 year of age. Even large ones at 5-6cm spontaneously resolve by 5-6 years of age. The chances of the intestinal contents be trapped through the defect is rare. Surgery is only indicated if the defect progressively becomes large after the age of 2 or if this is greater than 2cm big. This is less likely to resolve spontaneously and if it persists by the age of 3-4 years old. The other indication for surgery is that if the hernia is strangulated. So now we now know that ...

As an FCJ (Faithful Companions of Jesus) Sister Mary has spent a lot of her life teaching children, but there was a time when she thought her dream of becoming a nun would never be achieved. It was one of the first major sight hurdles she had to overcome. There have been many since. I always wanted to be a nun. Even as a young girl it was all I wanted to do. But when I tried to enter I was told that my sight was a problem. I remember praying to God and saying that if I could not be a Faithful Companion of Jesus in name, then let me be one in Spirit, Mary said. About that time the Superior General of the order visited Australia and I was invited to speak to her. We talked for a while and said it would be okay for me to join the order.. There was never a question which religious order Mary would join. She credits the many wonderful and caring teachers at Genazzano FCJ College in Melbourne, with her yearning for a life committed to God. One Sister in particular had a profound impact on the ...
