Continuous-wave Doppler signal intensity is commonly expected to reflect the severity of mitral regurgitation. Physical principles predict that alignment of the imaging beam, flow velocity, and turbulence can also be important or even dominant determinants of continuous-wave Doppler signal intensity. The reliability of tracking regurgitant severity with continuous-wave Doppler signal intensity was assessed in vitro with varying volume, velocity, turbulence, and beam alignment. The conditions wherein continuous-wave Doppler signal intensity increased with regurgitant volume were specific but poorly predictable combinations of orifice size, flow volume, and perfect beam alignment. Under other conditions flow velocity and turbulence effects dominated, and continuous-wave Doppler signal intensity did not reflect changing regurgitant volume. Aims: Metastatic nodes on power Doppler sonography tend to demonstrate high intranodal resistance and abnormal distribution of vascularity within a node. However, in our experience metastatic nodes from papillary carcinoma of the thyroid frequently demonstrate low intranodal resistance and some do not demonstrate the presence of any abnormal vascularity within. The work described in this report compiles empirical measurements of the intensity of 1.55-µm light reflected from numerous materials prepared with varying surface finishes over a range of incident and detection angles. The data are desired to construct a guide for conducting Photon Doppler Velocimetry measurements, which necessitates a prediction of the intensity of Doppler shifted light that will be reflected from a surface to optimize the measurement. It was found that the intensity of reflected light could be sufficiently explained using the law of reflection coupled with a coefficient of reflection that is specific to the material. It also provides a technique for empirically measuring the latter.

However, many studies that have produced reference charts have important methodological limitations, and these result in significant heterogeneity of reported reference ranges. OBJECTIVES: To produce international gestational age-specific centiles for umbilical artery Doppler indices based on longitudinal data and the same rigorous methodology used in the original Fetal Growth Longitudinal Study (FGLS) of the INTERGROWTH-21st Project. STUDY DESIGN: In Phase II of the INTERGROWTH-21st Project (the INTERBIO-21st Study), we prospectively continued enrolling pregnant women according to the same protocol from three of the original populations in Pelotas (Brazil), Nairobi (Kenya) and Oxford (UK) that had participated in FGLS. Results We included 28 patients in clinical remission (23 females and 5 males with a mean age (SD) of 51.9 (11.9) years and a disease duration of 108.2 (92.6) months). 71.9% of patients were positive for rheumatoid factor and anti-citrulline antibodies. 75% of patients were on at least one DMARD and 39.3% were on biological treatment. 60.7% of patients had power Doppler signal at baseline and 46.4% met criteria for our definition of active synovitis (synovial hypertrophy ≥2 + Power Doppler signal, Ramirez J et al, Arthritis Research and Therapy 2014). After one year of follow-up, 12 patients (42.9%) did not meet criteria for clinical remission. A total of 263 patients underwent either periorbital ophthalmosonometry (Doppler ultrasound) or a combination of ophthalmosonometry and supraorbital photoplethysmography (SOPPG) to determine the presence or absence of a hemodynamically significant lesion (occlusion or greater than 50% reduction in lumen diameter). To evaluate each of the sonographic features on gray-scale and power Doppler sonographic images for differentiating metastatic from reactive lymph nodes, we have conducted multivariate feature analysis to identify the sonographic features that are most predictive of metastasis to the cervical lymph nodes in patients with head and neck cancers. Univariate logistic regression analysis has shown that the six sonographic features assessed show significant correlations with the reactive or metastatic lymph nodes. A directional Doppler ultrasound cerebrovascular examination was compared with angiographical findings of 152 internal carotid arteries. The Doppler examination was abnormal in 36 of 38 (95%) arteries with occlusion or stenosis greater than 75%. Of 63 arteries with lesser degrees of stenosis, the Doppler examination identified only four. There were no false-positive Doppler examinations. If the decision to perform angiography had been predicated exclusively on the presence of abnormal Doppler findings, 61 of 101 (60%) carotid lesions of potential clinical significance would have been overlooked.
