During 1980-1994, the number of twin births in the United States increased by 42%, from 68,339 to 97,064, and the twin birth rate (i.e., the number of twin births to total live births) increased 30%, from 18.9 to 24.6 per 1000 live births. These increases are important because the risks for preterm birth, low birthweight (LBW), long-term disability, and early death are greater for twins than for singletons (1; CDC, unpublished data, 1991). To estimate state-specific rates of twin births, CDC analyzed data from the U.S. certificates of birth for 1992-1994. This report presents the findings of this analysis of these data, which indicate that state-specific rates of twin births varied substantially, and the variations reflect factors other than state-specific differences in maternal age distributions. In this analysis, twin births were defined as individual live births in twin deliveries, rather than sets of twins (e.g., a delivery resulting in one live birth and one stillbirth is reported as one ...
Objective To determine the risk of perinatal death among twins born at term in relation to mode of delivery. Design Retrospective cohort study. Setting Scotland 1985-2001. Population All twin births at or after 36 weeks of gestation, excluding antepartum stillbirths and perinatal deaths due to congenital abnormality (n= 8073). Methods The outcome of first and second twins was compared using McNemars test and the outcome of twin pairs in relation to mode of delivery was compared using exact logistic regression. Main outcome measures Intrapartum stillbirth or neonatal death of either twin. Results Overall, there were six deaths of first twins and 30 deaths of second twins (OR for second twin 5.00, 95% CI 2.00-14.70). The odds ratio for death of the second twin due to intrapartum anoxia was 21 (95% CI 3.4-868.5). The associations were similar for twins delivered following induction of labour and for sex discordant twins. However, there was no association between birth order and the risk of death ...

N2 - Background: Single fetal demise in a twin pregnancy is a rare event, the common causes being twin-twin transfusion syndrome, chromosomal or congenital anomalies and abnormalities of the umbilical cord and placenta. Umbilical vein thrombosis is a very rare cause of single fetal demise in twins. Case: Three days after a reassuring biophysical profile, a 40-year-old primigravida with twin pregnancy presented at 38 weeks gestation in early labor when demise of 1 of the twins was recognized. She underwent a cesarean section for arrest of labor, delivering twin A, a stillborn female weighing 2360 g and twin B, a liveborn male weighing 2200 g. Umbilical vein thrombus was noted in twin A. Conclusion: Umbilical vein thrombosis is a rare and sudden cause of fetal demise.. AB - Background: Single fetal demise in a twin ...

North Twin (Peak) is one of the two peaks that comprise The Twins massif located at the northeast corner of the Columbia Icefield in Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada. The other lower peak is named South Twin (3,566 m). North Twin is the third-highest peak in the Canadian Rockies, after Mount Robson and Mount Columbia. The massif was named The Twins in 1898 by J. Norman Collie and Hugh M. Stutfield. The decision to name the peaks separately was approved February 28, 1980. In addition to North Twin and South Twin, the massif contains a northern subpeak of North Twin known as Twins Tower, 3,627 m (11,900 ft). This sits atop the famed north face of the massif (see below), and was named in 1984. The first ascent of North Twin was recorded on 10 July 1923 by W.S. Ladd, J.M. Thorington, and Conrad Kain, via the East Face. The normal route is a ski mountaineering climb on the eastern slopes, and it is possible to ski all the way to the summit. A traverse can be made to the South Twin, although an ...

While for some it is the one child that parents want to revolve their lives around and put in their heart and soul bringing them up, there are others who desire the rarer twins, so that they have their hands full all the time and bring up two identical yet different but wonderful human beings. Though getting pregnant with twins is an event that is mostly attributed to luck, there are a few things that you may be able to do in order to actually conceive them. Whether they will be identical or fraternal cannot be assured. Here are some tips that will tell you how to get pregnant fast with twins. Take a look. Tips on Getting Pregnant with Twins. As mentioned earlier, to get pregnant with twins is nothing less of a miracle, but sometimes, knowingly or unknowingly, we are capable of making miracles happen. It is also a fact that people with a family history of twins are more likely to have twins for kids. As such, if you or your partner belong to such a family, your chances of having twins has just ...
For many twins, particularly identical, they are commonly seen as perfect halves to a whole - two parts to a puzzle that is only complete when theyre together. Yet twins, like any two siblings, have their own minds and their own personalities in spite of the fact that they may look similar. As a matter of fact, its these same twins need to be seen as individuals that often compels them to behave so differently from one another. How often have we heard about twins where one is shy and the other outgoing? Or where one is a left-brain logical type and the other a more creative sort? And dont get me started on the good twin/bad twin dichotomy. It doesnt exist.. Regardless of the labels that are put on them, twins are often seen as a package deal and no attempt at differentiating themselves from each other is successful as a result. For a twin child, being seen and appreciated as an individual will not only increase their confidence and abilities as they move through the difficult teenage ...
Nicole Harlaar. Biosketch:. Nicole Harlaar is a PhD student at the Institute of Psychiatry, London, UK. She is interested in the nature and mechanisms that mediate genetic and environmental risk factors for cognitive and learning disabilities and in trying to piece together how these processes change through the school years. Currently, she is examining these issues in a population-based longitudinal study of twin children in the UK Twins Early Development Study (TEDS).. Representative Publications:. The idea that twins develop entirely fabricated secret languages that only they use and only they can understand has long been a source of fascination for scientists and lay people alike. This is known as twin language, idioglossia or cryptophasia. In most cases, however, what the twins are speaking is not an entirely new or separate language. Its actually a matter of delayed or poor speech development in either one twin or both. Heres a possible scenario: Twin A has difficulty articulating certain sounds and thereby certain words. Although twin B is better able to articulate these sounds and words, he chooses to mimic or repeat the manner in which Twin A speaks. So, the two continue to talk this way, understanding what the other is saying but meanwhile it sounds like gibberish or some concocted language to you.. Why does this happen? There are a number of theories. For one, delayed speech in general is related to low birth weight and premature births. Statistics indicate that nearly 60 ...
There is a high incidence of congenital malformations in conjoined twins (10-20%) which are unrelated to the point of fusion. For example, anencephaly occurs 1.67 times more frequently in conjoined twins than in either dizygotic twins or singleton pregnancies. There is likewise a higher incidence of polyhydramnios (50-75%) than in normal twins (10%).. The sonographic and radiologic findings have been described by Gray et al and Koontz et al and Gore et al. These include 1) lack of a separating membrane 2) non-separable skin contour with an inablility to separate the fetal bodies 3) detection of other anomales in a twin gestation 4) solitary umbilical cord with more than 3 vessels present 5) both fetal heads persistently at the same level 6) backward flexion of the cervical spine (due to the fact that most conjoined twins are fused ventrally and face each other 7) bibreech or less commonly, bicephalic presentation and 8) constant relative fetal positions. It should be remembered however, that ...

An often asked question when you tell people you are pregnant with twins is do twins run in your family? There is a lot of talk about twins skipping a generation, and other misconceptions also exist.. As it turns out, dizygotic (or fraternal) twins are hereditary, but only on the mothers side. A genetic trait that tends to cause hyper-ovulation (the releasing of multiple eggs per cycle) can be passed from mother to child. Of course, as babycenter.com points out, its important to remember that a man who carries the gene doesnt have a greater chance of having twins himself because his genes dont affect his partners ovulation. Hence, it may seem to skip a generation when a father passes on his mothers gene to his daughter. (i.e. My grandmother had twins, so does that mean I could, too?). Some cultural groups seem to have a higher incidence of this genetic trait. For example, dizygotic twinning is quite rare in Asian women, about half the rate of Caucasian women. Women of African ...

FULL TITLE: Healthy Twins Survive Chemical Abortion After Planned Parenthood Failed to Disclose Second Child In Utero Recently, a Tennessee woman gave birth to healthy twin babies who miraculously survived a chemical abortion attempt at a Knoxville, TN, Planned Parenthood. The incredible story of these miracle babies, as told by one pro-life physician, underscores just how sorely the abortion giant fails to meet the needs of women, both from a medical standpoint and a human one. Displaying obvious ineptitude from the start, the nation s largest abortion business only informed the woman she was pregnant with twins after the chemical abortion she d been given by Planned Parenthood staff failed. Furthermore, at her initial visit to the Planned Parenthood facility, the staff misinformed her about the basic biological development happening within her seven-week pregnancy, stating that it was too early for a heartbeat and that it was just cardiac ...

Large retrospective cohort studies have reported increased neonatal death and morbidity associated with vaginal delivery in comparison with cesarean in twin pregnancies. A recent large international randomized trial, the Twin Birth Study (TBS), showed that planned cesarean does not significantly decrease or increase the risk of fetal or neonatal death or serious neonatal morbidity, as compared with planned vaginal delivery in twin pregnancy between 32 and 39 weeks of gestation with a first twin in cephalic presentation. However, neither these large retrospective cohort studies, because information regarding delivery management is lacking, nor the TBS, because of insufficient statistical power, can answer the question on how to manage vaginal twin deliveries.. The aim of the JUMODA study is first to confirm in France whether planned vaginal delivery is not associated with increased neonatal risks in comparison with planned caesarean as shown in the TBS and secondly to determine the best ...

In Represent me: please! Towards an ethics of digital twins in medicine,1 Braun analyses the potential for simulations of human organs and bodies, or digital twins, to faithfully a person. Drawing from several French philosophers, he introduces first conditions for digital twins to take on an ethically justifiable form of representation.1 The analysis predominantly focuses on challenges that arise in terms of representation, embodiment, control by the patients after which the twin is modelled. Many challenges are posited on the existence of digital twins as autonomous technologies capable of acting on behalf of the patient. One may be reasonably sceptical about the potential to achieve digital twins in the near future; the author, to his credit, acknowledges this fact in the section Simulating a precise efficacy while still providing a faithful overview of a nascent field of development. Given the state of development described in the paper, the risk of autonomous digital twins in the ...

Some can only afford one try with in vitro fertilization, or IVF, so they insist that at least two embryos be used to boost their odds, and view twins as two for the price of one. Many patients are telling their physicians I want twins, said Barbara Collura, president of Resolve, a support and advocacy group. We as a society think twins are healthy and always come out great. The 2009 case of a California woman who had octuplets using IVF focused attention on the issue of big multiple births, and the numbers have dropped, except for twins. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention s most recent numbers show that 46 percent of IVF babies are multiples mostly twins and 37 percent are born premature. It s mostly an American problem some European countries that pay for fertility treatments require using one embryo at a time. To add heft to the advice, the guidelines say women should be counseled on the risks of multiple births and embryo transfers and that this discussion should be noted
Approach and Results-From the 41-year prospective National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute Twin Study, we included 950 middle-aged male twins at baseline (1969-1973). Low-grade systemic inflammation was measured with plasma levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and C-reactive protein. Univariate and bivariate structural equation models were used, adjusted for a risk score for CHD death. The score-adjusted heritability was 19% for IL-6, 27% for C-reactive protein, and 22% for CHD death. The positive phenotypic correlation of IL-6 with CHD death (radjusted=0.27; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.08-0.43) was driven by additive genetic factors (contribution [relative contribution], 0.30 [111%]) but attenuated by unique environment (‒0.03 [‒11%]). The genetic correlation between IL-6 and CHD death was 0.74 (95% CI, 0.21-1.00), whereas the unique environmental correlation was ‒0.05 (95% CI, ‒0.35 to 0.25). The proportion of genetic variance for CHD death shared with that for IL-6 was 74%. The ...
JERUSALEM (JTA) - A conjoined twin in Israel who was separated in a rare operation is in serious condition.. The Rambam Medical Center in Haifa said the twins were separated last week in a four-hour operation. It was believed to be the first time the separation surgery had ever been attempted in Israel.. One twin, born stillborn, had not fully developed and was fused into his brothers body.. The survivor, who is fighting for his life, had another pelvis, legs, arms, kidney and digestive system. He also has a heart defect, which is common to conjoined twins.. This kind of surgery is incredibly complicated, with low survival rates, said Dr. Ran Steinberg, the head of pediatric surgery at Rambam. In many cases, as here, the twin also suffers from accompanying heart defects, which further endangers the infants life.. Only 150 cases of similarly conjoined twins have been documented in the last 126 years.. ...
Dear James, This is a great question and refers to a classic problem in Special Relativity called the Twin Paradox . I think you might have seen a response I wrote (perhaps to you) about the problem of simultaneity. Please take a look at Mad Science Question ID Number 1156778977.Ph and my response if you haven t seen them, yet. Your question comes down to determining what the difference between the Earth and the rocket is, so that the twin in the rocket is younger than the twin who stays on the Earth. If the twin, or clock, in the rocket was allowed to travel on through space, there would be no way to compare the two twins, or clocks, and each one would say that the other one was aging more slowly. (See the other MadSci question.) In this case, there can be no difference, and to say one is younger would completely depend on whose frame of reference you were using. So how can we compare the ages of the two twins so that both would agree with our conclusion? Well, we would have to start them out ...

It makes no difference to twins education whether they are educated separately or together. A Dutch study of 839 identical and 1,164 non-identical twins who were followed between the ages of 3 and 12 found that there was no effect on childrens test scores at 12 of sharing a classroom with a twin. 72% of the twins had shared a classroom, 19% were in the same school but different classes while 9% partly shared a classroom. Twins from less-wealthy families were more likely to share a class and those with problems with aggressive behaviour were more likely to be separated. Perkins, 34, made just four appearances for the Twins in September, including an emotional outing Sept. 30 against the Tigers. It was difficult for Perkins to maintain his composure as he walked off the field after getting Andrew Romine to pop up for what might have been the final out of his career. Then tears welled in his eyes again as he faced reporters following the game.. I didnt think it was going to be like this, Perkins said after the game, but you just never know.. The Twins could bring him back next season for less money, but the club could go in another direction as it looks for upgrades following an unexpectedly successful season. While Perkins has indicated that he is open to returning for a lower salary, the Twins have made no indications that they are interested in that. Instead of paying him $6.5 million next season, the Twins will pay Perkins a $700,000 buyout.. If the Twins dont bring him back to camp, Perkins will be faced with a big decision: Look to hook on with ...
A prospective cohort of 171 women with twin gestations was recruited from eight U.S. sites from 2012 to 2013. After an initial sonogram at 11w0d-13w6d where dichorionicity was confirmed, women were randomized to one of two serial ultrasonology schedules. Ultrasound measurements at each follow-up visit included standard fetal biometrics ((BPD, HC, AC, FL); estimated fetal weight was calculated using a Hadlock formula. Growth curves and percentiles were estimated using linear mixed models with cubic splines. Percentiles were compared statistically at each gestational week between the twins and 1,731 singletons in the Fetal Growth Studies-Singletons cohort.. In addition to 2-D ultrasound measures for analyzing fetal growth, this study recorded maternal anthropometrics and a brief interview to capture changes in health status, stress and depression, and physical activity at each follow-up visit. Four blood draws at baseline and at targeted gestational ages for the eventual identification of ...
Many mothers who have carried twins report exaggerated pregnancy symptoms. For example, extreme fatigue and morning sickness are both symptoms. Every pregnancy is different, but experienced moms who have been pregnant with singletons also report exaggerated symptoms. Another early sign that can point to twins is higher levels of human chorionic gonadotropin, or hCG, which is the hormone a womans body produces while pregnant. This can cause a home pregnancy test to come back quickly with a bright positive line, as opposed to a faint line early in the pregnancy. ...

For the analysis of mortality of the second born foetus versus the first born when the first delivery was at ≥24 weeks of gestational age, 12 articles were included. In the analysis 4 reports were excluded since there were no events (no mortality) in both groups (first and second born) making analysis impossible. For the 36 cases included, the second born had a significantly lower mortality risk compared to the first born if delivery of the first born occurred at ≥ 24 weeks gestational age (relative risk=0.37, 95% confidence interval= 0.17 - 0.82, P=0.014, I2=0%, P=0.82).. Conclusions and implications: In carefully selected twin pregnancies the survival of the second born twin may improve with delayed-interval delivery, also if the first was born at or after 24 weeks. Management protocols in the studies included vary, making it difficult to propose a uniform strategy for delayed-interval delivery. Families must be informed about the possibility that a nonviable infant would survive to a ...

Beyonce and Jay Zs twins have been born, but the newborns are still shrouded in mystery. While Beyonces father, Matthew Knowles, confirmed the twins arrival on Twitter, the babies have yet to be seen, and neither Jay Z nor Beyonce has put out an official statement regarding the birth, Dearly reports. It was recently revealed the twins may have been born prematurely, according to TMZ.
The present study demonstrated that overall placental weight is significantly lower in MC and DC IUGR twins compared to nIUGR twins, but there was no difference in the overall BW/PW ratio. Regarding gestational age at birth and placental weight in IUGR and nIUGR twins, the results were not the same for MC and DC twins (Table 2). For births at 32 to 34 weeks, IUGR MC twins had a significantly lower placental weight compared to their nIUGR counterparts, and these twins were delivered earlier due to the low placental reserve for fetal nutrition. Interestingly, the BW/PW ratio at this period was higher, but not significantly different, in IUGR twins compared to nIUGR twins, indicating that both the placenta and the fetus are small in IUGR twins. At 35 weeks and older, no difference between IUGR and nIUGR in MC twins was observed in placental weight, but there was a significantly lower BW/PW ratio; this is perhaps because the placenta in these IUGR cases is bigger with greater functionality, and ...
Twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome is a rare condition that occurs when blood moves from one identical twin (the Òdonor twinÓ) to the other (the Òrecipient twinÓ) while in the womb. The donor twin may be born smaller, with paleness, anemia, and dehydration. The recipient twin may be born larger, with redness, too much blood, and increased blood pressure, resulting in an increased risk for heart failure. Treatment may require repeated amniocentesis during pregnancy. Fetal laser surgery may be done to interrupt the flow of blood from one twin to the other. After birth, treatment depends on the infants specific symptoms. The donor twin may need a blood transfusion to treat anemia. The recipient twin may need to have the volume of body fluid reduced. This may involve an exchange transfusion. Medications may be given to treat heart failure in the recipient twin ...

The risk of perinatal morbidity and mortality in twins is 3-7 times higher than in singletons. In comparison to dichorionic twins, monochorionic twins are at increased risk for perinatal mortality and serious morbidity. In both type of twins growth discordance can occur. Discordant growth of dichorionic twins could be due to differences in placental mass or differences in placental parenchymal lesions, whereas birth weight discordancy in monochorionic twins is caused by placental vascular anastomoses. In this review the different types of complications (acardiac twins, acute and chronic twin-twin transfusion syndrome) due to different combinations of vascular anastomoses are discussed in relation to a computer model developed to gain more insight into the development of the twin-twin transfusion syndrome. The angioarchitecture of 395 monochorionic twin placentas was studied. Mortality was highest in the absence of an arterio-arterial anastomosis (42%) and lowest in the presence of an ...
OBJECTIVE: To review the maternal and neonatal outcomes, and management of single foetal death in twin pregnancies. DATA SOURCES: Medline literature search (1950 to 1999) and hospital audit of single antepartum foetal deaths in twin pregnancy from 1993 through 1997. DATA SELECTION: Key words for literature search: twin pregnancy/pregnancies; single fetal death/demise. DATA EXTRACTION: Data were extracted and reviewed independently by the authors. DATA SYNTHESIS: During the study period, 182 (0.76%) of 23,804 deliveries involved twin pregnancies. Seven (3.8%) of the twin pregnancies were complicated by the death of one foetus. Single foetal death in a twin pregnancy in the late second and third trimesters is associated with significant morbidity and mortality in the surviving co-twin, especially in a pregnancy involving monochorionic twins. Management should be individualised; conservative management is preferred by most obstetricians. CONCLUSION: Single foetal death in twin pregnancies should be ...

A parasitic twin (also known as an asymmetrical or unequal conjoined twin) is the result of the processes that also produce vanishing twins and conjoined twins, and may represent a continuum between the two.[citation needed] Parasitic twins occur when a twin embryo begins developing in utero, but the pair does not fully separate, and one embryo maintains dominant development at the expense of its twin. Unlike conjoined twins, one ceases development during gestation and is vestigial to a mostly fully formed, otherwise healthy individual twin. The undeveloped twin is defined as parasitic, rather than conjoined, because it is incompletely formed or wholly dependent on the body functions of the complete fetus. The independent twin is called the autosite. Conjoined parasitic twins joined at the head are described as craniopagus or cephalopagus, and occipitalis if joined in the occipital region or parietalis if joined in the parietal region. Craniopagus parasiticus is a general term for a parasitic ...

We used 289 pairs of Swedish twins reared apart or together to evaluate the importance of genetic and environmental influences on blood pressure. Unlike other twin and family studies, the adoption/twin design allows a distinction between estimates of the importance of shared rearing environments and genetic effects. Genetic factors were observed to play an important role for individual differences in blood pressure. Model-fitting analyses suggested upper limits of heritability for systolic and diastolic blood pressures in the entire sample of 0.44 and 0.34, respectively. More interestingly, substantial influences of shared family effects accounting for up to 27% of the variation were also revealed. Effects of correlated environment, which might reflect, for example, the intrauterine environment, existed to some extent later in life. The influence of genetic factors tended to decrease across age groups for systolic blood pressure (0.62 in individuals less than 65 years old; 0.12 in those 65 years ...

First Signs of Twin Pregnancy?. If you think you may be carrying twins, consider if you have one or more of the following first signs of twin pregnancy.. Do you have a faster and larger weight gain?. Unlike when you are carrying a single baby, one of the first signs of twin pregnancy is that you are putting on more weight than in a normal pregnancy. Instead of gaining two to four pounds during your first three months, you will acquire anywhere between ten to fifteen pounds.. Do you think your uterus is larger than normal?. When you are pregnant with twins, your uterus will grow rapidly so as to accommodate the development of two embryos. Also, it may seem that the size of your uterus grows more rapidly, at a rate which is not in line with your expected due date. However, take note of the fact that apart from multiple pregnancies, excessive amniotic fluid and fibroid growth may also cause enlarged uterus.. Do you experience severe and more frequent morning sickness?. Among the first signs of twin ...
Online media use such as social networking and gaming could be strongly influenced by our genes, according to a new study by researchers from Kings College London.. Access to and engagement with online media continues to grow at an unprecedented speed, and it plays an increasingly important role in the development and experience of people across all age groups. Nonetheless, people differ substantially in their use of online media and researchers are interested in finding out why people differ so much. For instance, do genetic differences between people affect their engagement with online media?. Published in PLOS ONE, the study looked at online media use in more than 8,500 16-year-old twins from the Twins Early Development Study (TEDS). By comparing identical twins (who share 100 per cent of their genes) and non-identical twins (who share 50 per cent of their genes), the researchers were able to estimate the relative contribution of genes and environment on individual differences in engagement ...
The subject of mode of delivery of twin pregnancies has been the topic of several journal publications. This debate was rekindled in a recent editorial where the question was raised whether all twins should be delivered by caesarean section. Most of this debate concerned the neonatal outcome of the second born twin. The second twin is at a greater risk of hypoxia because complications such as malpresentation, the longer second stage, cord prolapse and abruptio placentae are more likely to occur at delivery of the second twin. This has prompted several countries and academic centres to examine their data on neonatal outcome and mode of delivery in twin gestations ...
In most existing surveys the follow up period is too short or the sample size insufficient to draw firm conclusions.20 21 Only one recent Swedish register study on children born from 1982 to 1995 that examined neurological sequelae in children born after assisted conception had a sufficiently large sample size (2060 IVF twins). In this study, IVF twins were compared with a matched group of non-IVF twins, and IVF singletons were compared with a matched group of non-IVF singletons.7 The researchers found that IVF twins had a similar risk of neurological sequelae as their naturally conceived peers, but, in contrast to our results, they showed that the risk of neurological sequelae was higher in IVF twins than in IVF singletons. They did not, however, study the effect of ICSI. The crude prevalence of cerebral palsy per 1000 children in the Swedish study was 7.4, 6.9, and 3.8 for IVF/ICSI twins, control twins and IVF or ICSI singletons, respectively. In our study the corresponding rates were 3.2/1000 ...
OBJECTIVE: To compare dietary habits between Finnish twin migrants to Sweden and their co-twins always living in Finland, and to analyse how migration influenced food consumption patterns in the migrants. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Same-sexed twin pairs born in Finland below 75 years of age, with at least one twin migrating to Sweden (n=1083 pairs). Dietary habits were assessed by a food frequency questionnaire included in a comprehensive mailed questionnaire (response rate 71%). For 76 male twin pairs, information was also collected by a dietary history interview inquiring the habitual diet during the previous year. RESULTS: Migrant twins in Sweden had a lower intake of typical Finnish foods like dark bread and berries, and an increased consumption of fresh fruit compared with co-twins living in Finland. The migrants consumed less potatoes and more rice and pasta. Sweet pastries were consumed less often by the migrants and they also tended to more often cut out visible fat of meat and on the other hand ...
Twin pregnancies are at an increased risk of early delivery. One of the reasons for this may be due to a weakened neck of the womb (cervix). There are 2 main ways to manage a weakened cervix in pregnancy. One option is to do nothing (conservative approach). The other is to strengthen the cervix with a stitch (cerclage) to provide extra support. There is no good quality convincing evidence to suggest which of these has better outcomes for mum and babies in twin pregnancies. This trial aims to determine whether securing the weakened cervix with a cerclage will help to prolong the pregnancy and prevent early delivery. Babies who are born early experience multiple complications including lung, brain and learning difficulties. Therefore, the study will also aim to determine whether prolonging the pregnancy by inserting the cerclage reduces the number of babies affected by these problems. In order to carry out a fair study we aim to perform what is known as a randomised controlled trial. We will ...
The relationship between twins is both a bond and a rivalry that begins in the womb and lasts until they die. For the one in three sets of twins who are identical, the closeness can lead to uncanny skills at communicating with each other. During infancy and toddlerhood, they may even develop their own language. To the parents who raise them, twins bring a special set of frustrations, challenges and rewards. And one of the frustrations is that the ways parents have been advised to raise twins have shifted dramatically in recent decades. ``Until the 1970s, parents and professionals were comfortable treating twins as a single unit instead of as individuals,`` says Dr. Judith Landau- Stanton, an associate professor of psychiatry and family medicine at the University of Rochester, and the mother of 20-year-old identical twins.
In fact with about 35-45 twins per live birth, this village in North Kerala, India, has four times more twins than normal. Not surprisingly, the village has been dubbed the twin village.. There seems to be a statistical error in this article. It says that in this one village there are 35-45 twins per live birth but that seems way out of line (how can you even have more than two twins per live birth). Perhaps its per 1,000 live births or something else?. J.T.D.. That makes it sound like for every live birth, 70-90 babies are popping out of a single women.. Keri. Background Atopic traits often co-occur and this can potentially be caused by common aetiological relationships between traits, i.e. a common genetic or a common environmental background.. Objective To estimate to what extent the same genetic and environmental factors influence wheeze, rhinitis, airway hyper-responsiveness (AHR), and positive skin prick test (posSPT) in a sample of adult twins.. Methods Within a sampling frame of 21 162 twin subjects, 20-49 years of age, from the Danish Twin Registry, a total of 575 subjects (256 intact pairs and 63 single twins), who either themselves and/or their co-twins reported a history of asthma at a nationwide questionnaire survey, were clinically examined. Symptoms of wheeze and rhinitis were obtained by interview; airway responsiveness and skin test reactivity were measured using standard techniques. Correlations in liability between the different traits were estimated and latent factor models of genetic and environmental effects were fitted to the ...
Critics describe David Lynchs most memorable imagery as not just deeply troubling but deeply American. Despite that - or maybe because of it - his films have found enthusiastic audiences all over the world. But does Lynch command quite as fervent a fan base in any country as he does in Japan? Unlikely though the cultural match of creator and viewer may seem, Lynchs work tends to make big splashes in the Land of the Rising Sun, and Twin Peaks, the groundbreakingly strange television drama Lynch co-created with Mark Frost, made an especially big one. Standing as evidence is the Twin Peaks material made for the Japanese and no one else: the Lynch-directed Twin Peaks Georgia Coffee commercials, for instance, or the Twin Peaks Visual Soundtrack on Laserdisc.. What must the thirty-five million people who tuned in to the pilot episode of Twin Peaks in April 1990 have thought when they first witnessed the shows opening credits? writes musician Claire Nina Norelli in her book on Twin Peaks ...

Couples with twins or triplets are more likely to divorce, with financial stress playing a major role in break-ups, according to a study by Birmingham Universitys School of Social Policy.. Research showed 28 percent of the parents of twins or triplets divorced, compared with 24 percent of other families. The study, The Effects of Twins and Multiple Births Families and Their Living Standards, showed that financial pressures are among the most common reasons for the breakdown of families. The report, supported by the Twin and Multiple Births Association (TAMBA), concludes that families with multiple births reported a drop in the income following the births of the children.. These families were twice as likely as families of singletons to report quite difficult financial stress and were also more likely to be in arrears on bill payments and to have exhausted savings. Twins and triplets experience higher levels of material deprivation as parents struggled to pay for key child-related ...
We estimate the heritability of sporadic ALS to be 0.61 (0.38 to 0.78). The strength of this study lies in the extra power available from combining the two new studies and the previous British study in a meta-analysis. This has allowed us to independently but simultaneously model the different studies, despite their different designs. The value we obtain and the confidence interval lie within the range predicted by the British MND Twin Study. Although it can be difficult to estimate heritability in relatively rare diseases, our study combines data from 10 872 MND death certificates over a 10-year period, a country-wide study of 86 441 twin pairs and a clinic-based study of 4982 individuals with ALS or their family members, generating results from 171 ALS twin pairs.. Our analysis differs from the British MND Twin study in an important aspect. We used structural equation modelling.21 This is a powerful likelihood-based technique that allows an estimate of heritability despite the lack of ...

Twins Family friends are expecting twins. While they are, of course, excited, they also are looking for advice on parenting two new daughters. As a parent of twins, they asked me some any words of wisdom. As I wrote my recommendations in a letter to the mom and dad, I thought that this advice may be relevant to other parents or grandparents of twins. Also, it can certainly be modified to use with children that are not born five minutes apart. Here it is:Dear Friends,I am glad you are looking forward to the adventure of twins. I wish I could give you advice that would help for every scenario you might face. Unfortunately, there will be times when you have to, as my Grandmother used to say, Just fly by the seat of your pants . However, I do have some routines that worked well for my family. When you go to pick up a baby, do not go to the same crib first each time. It may not sound important, but it helps you not to have one child be the one who always gets your attention first. In that same lines of

Mixed-effects models and generalized estimating equations are common approaches for handling correlated continuous or binary data. However, the operating characteristics of these methods for mixes of correlated and independent data are not well established. Methods. At first, doctors believed their hearts were separate, but touching one another, but once doctors turned to breakthrough 3D technology, pioneered at the University of Minnesota, and used at only a handful of places in the world, they explored a new revelation.. A team of University of Minnesota Masonic Childrens Hospital doctors then spent months planning and performing a groundbreaking delivery and separation of the conjoined twins, using 3D printing and imaging technology to discover how the baby girls hearts were intricately connected.. A wide range of physician specialists spent months studying the twins, and orchestrated elaborate simulations of how they would deliver the twins, and separate them when the babies grew stronger to withstand surgery.. Worldwide, it is a rare occurrence to have twins conjoined in such a way. Experts say that it is even rarer among boys as most such cases have been observed in girls.. A famous case of conjoined dicephalic parapagus twins include Abigail and Brittany Hensel from US. The girls have one broad ribcage with two fused sternums, two breasts, one liver, one large intestine and colon, three kidneys, one bladder, one set of reproductive organs, one pelvis and two legs.. In September 2011, two 11 month girls from Sudan who were conjoint twins with their heads joined together were successfully separated. Their condition occurs one in 2.5 million births, known as craniopagus twins.. In the case of the Indian babies, only 600 such cases have been reported in the past 500 years.. Doctors at the hospital in India are taking every measure to see that the twins survive. ...

Conjoined twins were born with one of them having no proper heart or lungs. One of the twins was being kept alive by the other twin whose heart circulated blood for both of them. The Doctors wanted to operate to separate the twins. This would result in the weaker twin dying. The parents would not consent to this. The Doctors claimed that it was lawful to operate. The Court of Appeal gave the declaration. In the judgement, one of the points considered was the doctrine of necessity. ...

Depression can heighten the risk for heart disease, but the effect of antidepressant use revealed by the study is separate and independent from depression itself, says first author Amit Shah, MD, a cardiology fellow at Emory University School of Medicine. The data suggest that antidepressants may combine with depression for a negative effect on blood vessels, he says. Shah is a researcher working with Viola Vaccarino, MD, PhD, chair of the Department of Epidemiology at Emorys Rollins School of Public Health.. The study included 513 middle-aged male twins who both served in the U.S. military during the Vietnam War. Twins are genetically the same but may be different when it comes to other risk factors such as diet, smoking and exercise, so studying them is a good way to distill out the effects of genetics, Shah says.. Researchers measured carotid intima-media thickness - the thickness of the lining of the main arteries in the neck - by ultrasound. Among the 59 pairs of twins where only one ...

We describe the anaesthetic management of the surgical separation of a pair of thoracopagus-cardiopagus twins with a common right atrium and a myocardial tissue bridge containing vascular channels between their ventricles. One of them died during the procedure, the surviving twin is now two years old. The survival of one twin for two years without significant sequelae, after the surgical separation of twins with shared right atrium and fused ventricles, has not previously been reported. Unusually if not uniquely, the 5AT will be fitted with twin valves above each cylinder combined with large volume steam chests. Valves must be sized to ensure that the total port area through which the steam flows into and out of the cylinders, is sufficient to keep pressure drops to an acceptable level. Twin valves offer a significant advantage in that their combined mass is much lower than that of a single valve offering the same port area. Thus inertial forces at very high speed are reduced even though these are small compared to those caused by the pistons and drive motion.. The use of twin valves also facilitates the provision of a large steam chest volume, essential for maintaining high steam pressure during the admission phase of each piston stroke. Conversely their provision has the negative effect of increasing clearance volume.. Use of twin valves necessitates use of a combination lever that is suspended from a rocking lever. The suspended combination lever changes the geometry of the ...
