The Alabama map turtle (Graptemys pulchra) is a species of emydid turtle endemic to the southern United States. Differentiation from other turtle species includes a black stripe running down the center of its back with knobs extruding from it, but these projections wear down with age. T.H. Bean and L. Kumlen first collected the Alabama map turtle in July 1876 from a lake near Montgomery, Alabama. Type locality for this species is Montgomery County, Alabama. Baur described and named the Alabama map turtle in 1893. The genus Graptemys includes nine species of mostly aquatic turtles. The Alabama map turtle has a unique location to its habitat in the Southeast. It is endemic to the Mobile Bay drainage basin and inhabits the lotic (flowing water) areas of Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi, and possibly Louisiana. It ranges from the Pearl River in Mississippi and Louisiana eastward to the Yellow River in Florida and Alabama. The IUCN lists the Alabama map turtle as near threatened. Alabama lists ...

Box turtles are omnivorous. Generally, your box turtles diet should be about 50% plant-based material and 50% animal-based material, but be sure to discuss a specific diet plan for your turtle with your veterinarian. Most young turtles eat daily, while older turtles can be fed daily or every other day, depending upon the pets individual appetite, body weight, and overall health. Most (80-90%) of the plant material fed to box turtles should be vegetables and flowers, and only 10-20% should be fruit. As a rule, dark, leafy greens should make up the largest part of the diet. Fruit should be fed more sparingly than vegetables, since they are often preferred by box turtles over vegetables and tend to be less nutritious. The key is to feed a wide variety of healthy items, including both plant- and animal-based protein sources. A common problem seen in pet box turtles is over-supplementation with vitamins (especially vitamin D3) and minerals. Check with your veterinarian about the need to supplement ...

To determine how well the sea turtle hatchlings could perform after their walk on the treadmill, the hatchlings swam in a small tank using a specially designed swimsuit. Researchers measured oxygen consumption and lactate accumulation as well as their breathing rates and stroke rates - that is how fast they were paddling their flippers. (Photo credit: Jay Paredes) If everything goes as planned, a newly hatched sea turtle should be able to crawl from its nest to the ocean in a couple of minutes. This trek happens in the first 24 hours when they emerge from their nests and is referred to as the frenzy period. Just like biathletes, these hatchlings sprint from the beach to the surf and then swim a long distance to reach their home. Unfortunately, things dont always go as nature planned.. Scientists believe that sea turtle hatchlings have an innate instinct that guides them toward the brightest low horizon and away from tall dark silhouettes, which orients them toward the oceans surf. However, ...
Consensus has determined sea turtles, including E. imbricata to be, at the very least, threatened species because of their slow growth and maturity, and slow reproductive rates. Many adult turtles have been killed by humans, both accidentally and deliberately. Their existence is threatened due to pollution and loss of nesting areas because of coastal development. Biologists estimate that the hawksbill population has declined 80 percent in the past 100-135 years.[1] Human and animal encroachment threatens nesting sites, and small mammals dig up the eggs to eat.[6] In the US Virgin Islands, mongooses raid hawksbill nests (along with those of other sea turtles, such as Dermochelys coriacea) right after they are laid.[64] In 1982, the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species first listed E. imbricata as endangered.[65] This endangered status continued through several reassessments in 1986,[66] 1988,[67] 1990,[68] and 1994[69] until it was upgraded in status to critically endangered in 1996.[1] Two ...

Increased Cattle Grazing in Desert Tortoise Habitat. BARSTOW, Calif.- A judge agreed with conservation groups October 1 and ordered the Bureau of Land Management to hold off on its decision to increase cattle grazing on 136,167 acres of public land. This desert region, known as the Ord Mountain Allotment, includes 101,033 acres of federally protected critical habitat for the desert tortoise, within a Desert Wildlife Management Area that the Bureau is supposed to manage to protect threatened desert tortoises and other imperiled animals and plants.. In his decision, Administrative Law Judge Harvey C. Sweitzer agreed with the conservation groups that the Bureau of Land Managements decision to increase the number of cattle authorized was invalid. The agency had failed to provide a rational basis for an increase in grazing above its own estimates of the carrying capacity of the allotment.. The Bureau of Land Management cannot continue to make decisions regarding grazing that fail to take into ...

At the time the aurora turtle lived, the Arctic Ocean was probably even more separated from the global oceanic circulation system than it is today. Numerous rivers from the adjacent continents would have poured fresh water into the ancient Arctic sea. Since fresh water is lighter than marine water, Tarduno thinks it may have rested on top of the salty ocean water, allowing a freshwater animal such as the aurora turtle to migrate with relative ease.. Tarduno also believes its possible that the same volcanic rock may not have allowed only the turtles migration, but also would have contributed to creating the climate in which the turtle thrived.. We found this turtle right on top of the last flood basalts-a large stretch of lava from a series of giant volcanic eruptions, says Tarduno. That leads us to believe that the warming may have been caused by volcanoes pumping tremendous amounts of carbon dioxide into the Earths atmosphere. Theres evidence that this volcanic activity happened all ...

A welcome breakthrough. The plan seems like a good one, says Elizabeth Hunter, an ecologist at the University of Georgia who has studied giant tortoise restoration on the Galapagos Islands but wasnt involved in Pedronos research.. I would fully support going forward with this plan, Hunter said. Of course, any time you introduce a species, there are many potential pitfalls, but this plan is cautious and will allow researchers to discover those before anything goes too wrong.. Giant tortoises are good species with which to start testing these sorts of ecological replacements, Hunter said. Theyre very easy to contain with fencing and easy to monitor with tracking devices, and most diseases they could carry are species-specific, meaning they likely wouldnt infect other wildlife. Pedronos team plans to do thorough veterinary checks to make sure the new tortoises arent bringing invasive plants or exotic diseases with them to Madagascar.. Similar plans to replace missing giant tortoises ...

redOrbit Staff & Wire Reports - Your Universe Online. Researchers at NISTs Hollings Marine Laboratory (HML) and four partner organizations have measured for the first time concentrations of 13 perfluoroalkyl compounds (PFCs) in five endangered species of sea turtles. While PFC toxicology studies have not yet been conducted on turtles, the levels of the compounds seen in all five species approach the amounts known to cause unfavorable health effects in other animals.. PFCs are man-made compounds that have many uses including stain-resistant coatings, fire-fighting foams and emulsifiers in plastics manufacturing. They are detectable in human and wildlife samples worldwide, infiltrate food chains, and have been shown in laboratory animals - rats, mice and fish - to be toxic to the liver, the thyroid, neurobehavioral function and the immune system. The PFCs most frequently found in the environment are perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA).. Located in Charleston, S.C., ...
DELAVAN, Wis. - A reward of $1,000 is being offered for information leading to the arrest of whoever beat a snapping turtle at a Wisconsin golf course.. The Department of Natural Resources says it happened Monday between 7:30 and 9:30 a.m. at the Delbrook Golf Club in Delavan. The turtle was a female looking for a place to lay her eggs. She was found lying in a sand bunker and apparently had been beaten with a golf club. Wildlife rehabilitators say the turtle had holes in her shell and also was struck in the right eye. Surgery was planned Tuesday. The DNR says the turtle has about a 40 percent chance of survival. The Global Conservation Group of Wisconsin is offering the reward. In May a U.S. meteorological post was established in St. Helena to help better determine the weather forecasts for pilots flying in and out of Ascension. During this time, the soldiers on Ascension rescued several men who were stranded at sea-survivors of the nearby U.S. Samuel Jordan Kirkwood and Dutch Benakat wrecks-and treated them at the 175th Field Hospital. Survivors of the Benakat were subsequently picked up on 7 July by the HMS Corfu and transported to West Africa. As a result of these rescues, U.S. commander Mullenix requested an appropriate vessel to engage in rescue operations offshore. By the middle of May, the U.S. presence on Ascension had become public and the operation was no longer a secret. Although the world was now aware of the islands activity, the secrecy ban was not lifted until 26 November. The North Africa campaign ended on 13 May and the Allies took control of North Africa, in part due to the refueling station strategically located on Ascension. The airfield continued ...
Case 1. While vacationing with her family in Wisconsin in late July 2004, a Kansas girl aged 4 years was taken to an emergency department with diarrhea and fever of 4 days duration. Her mother was instructed to keep the child on a clear liquid diet until the diarrhea ceased, and the child was released. The next day, the patient was taken to an urgent-care clinic for treatment of bloody diarrhea, cramps, and fever. Stool cultures yielded Salmonella enterica serotype Pomona, a rare serotype. The child was placed on a 3-day course of trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, and the illness resolved after 5 days. Epidemiologic investigation by the Wisconsin Division of Public Health (WDPH) determined that the family had purchased a small turtle at a souvenir shop (store A) in northwest Wisconsin. Warned by the public health nurse of the possible link between the turtle and the childs illness, the family removed the turtle, so the animal was not available for testing. Cases 2 and 3. In July 2004, a boy aged ...

Oman - Plant and animal life: Because of the low precipitation, vegetation is sparse except where there is irrigation, which is provided by an ancient system of water channels known as aflāj (singular: falaj). The channels often run underground and originate in wells near mountain bases. The aflāj collectively were designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2006. Acacia trees form most of what little natural vegetation exists, and the soil is extremely rocky; plant species are protected in nature preserves. The government also protects rare animal species, such as the Arabian oryx, Arabian leopard, mountain goat, and loggerhead turtle. Omans birdlife is extraordinarily diverse and

Coexistence and transition of diverse sex determination strategies have been revealed in some ectothermic species, but the variation between males caused by different sex determination strategies and the underlying mechanism remain unclear. Here, we used the gynogenetic gibel carp (Carassius gibelio) with both genotypic sex determination (GSD) and temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD) strategies to illustrate this issue. We found out that males of GSD and TSD in gibel carp had similar morphology, testicular histology, sperm structure and sperm vitality. However, when maternal individuals were mated with males of GSD, sperm nucleus swelling and fusing with the female pronucleus were observed in the fertilized eggs. On the contrary, when maternal individuals were mated with males of TSD, sperm nucleus remained in the condensed status throughout the whole process. Subsequently, semen proteomics analysis unveiled that DNA replication and gene expression-related pathways were inhibited in the sperm

Mojave desert tortoises can live upwards of ~50 years in the wild (Germano 1992; Curtin et al. 2009; Medica et al. 2012) and long-term studies on desert tortoises have detected substantial annual variation in survival (Zylstra et al. 2013; Lovich et al. 2014), mostly driven by drought severity. Therefore, long-term monitoring is essential for understanding the efficacy of translocation in this group of testudines. We captured, quarantined, and relocated Mojave desert tortoises during construction of the Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System (ISEGS), a 370-megawatt-capacity solar energy project in the Ivanpah Valley of Californias Mojave Desert, near the Nevada border (Fig.. 1). Translocated tortoises were captured close to the project boundary and released < 500 m from their original home range (individuals were radio-tracked prior to moving them to determine the approximate location of their original home range). Previous translocations found that desert tortoises are capable of navigating ...
A new species of long-necked freshwater turtle of the family Chelidae is described from the Arnhem Land Plateau in the Northern Territory of Australia. The taxon is within the Chelodina expansa group of species and is the smallest member of that group. First collected by scientists some 20 years ago, research on the species has been hampered by its isolation - it is restricted to sparsely inhabited, rugged sandstone country of tropical northern Australia. It can be diagnosed by its broad, shortened and flattened skull, by the possession of a contiguous neural series and by the contact of the vomer and the pterygoids. It is clearly distinct from Chelodina rugosa in a canonical discriminant analysis. Preliminary data on natural history are also presented. Males examined in October-November had enlarged vascularised testes and epididymes distended with sperm. Females examined at the same time had regressed corpora lutea and atretic follicles from the previous nesting season, presumably in the ...

On September 4, 2008, the Philadelphia Department of Public Health (PDPH) and the Pennsylvania Department of Health (PADOH) notified CDC of an outbreak of possible turtle-associated human Salmonella Typhimurium infections detected by identifying strains with similar pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) patterns in PulseNet. Turtles and other reptiles have long been recognized as sources of human Salmonella infections (1), and the sale or distribution of small turtles (those with carapace lengths ,4 inches) has been prohibited in the United States since 1975 (2,3). CDC and state and local health departments conducted a multistate investigation during September--November 2008. This report summarizes the results of that investigation, which identified 135 cases in 25 states and the District of Columbia; 45% were in children aged ≤5 years. Among 70 patients with primary infection, 37% reported turtle exposure, of which 81% was to small turtles most commonly purchased from street vendors. A ...

Discussion. Rat bites are most commonly reported in reptiles that are fed rats as prey (Barten, 2006b; Schilliger, 2004b). Tortoises are, however, also vulnerable to rat attacks, particularly during the winter months when many tortoises undergo hibernation. Rat bite trauma is, unfortunately, a common presentation in post-hibernation animals (McArthur et al., 2004). The exposed surfaces of the fore and hind limbs, as well as the tail, are most commonly affected, although eye and head injuries are also occasionally seen (McArthur et al., 2004). Gnaw injuries to the shell may also be seen, as in this case.. On presentation, these patients will require a thorough examination and assessment to establish the status of the patient and the extent of their injuries. Initial treatment will aim to stabilise the patient and will consist of fluid therapy, analgesia, rewarming and temporary wound care.. Warming and fluid therapy is recommended in most patients, and indeed necessary to reverse hibernation in ...

A spatially explicit population model written in C++ programming language is used in this study examining the population dynamics of the Desert Tortoise (Gopherus agassizii) in the California Mojave Desert. The model is constructed with hexagonal divisions of space, and with one-year increments of time. Four thematic maps: vegetation, soil type, roads, and elevation, are used to generate hexagon grids classifing the status of resources and roads in the modeled site. The grids are used as the input habitat data for runs of the model. Simulations used a projection matrix for seven size classes. The matrix contains the averages of demographic rates of tortoise population in different study sites in the Western Mojave (Doak Ct al. 1994). Four landscapes with a total area of 2736.21 are sampled from the study site. Main events taking place in one time step include movement, survival, and reproduction. The movement is modeled for eight size classes based on the mobility characteristics of the species ...
Splinter being a mutated rat or being a mutated human does drastically alter how mutagen works. In the comics, it turned non-humans into humanoid beings. But in the original cartoon, it was kind of messy. I remember the point being made that the turtles became humanoid because of Yoshis contact, but he became a rat because he was last with them. What would happen if the rat and turtle were in last contact with each other? It gets really messy. But the ooze only changing animals does make it super weird as to why Splinter knows martial arts of any sort. The other super weird theory I have is this is partially why Super Shredder is so deranged, since he was last in contact with mutant turtles at the end of TMNT II. I always thought TMNT III should have had Shredder turning into a Slash-like character based on how mutantions had been shown to work. As for this toy, hes okay but feels almost more like an accessory than a figure. The lack of weapons (which I honestly think April was given ...
Once our little turtles hatch out of their nests and make it to the water, they have a long journey ahead of them. Their destination is the Sargasso Sea. The hatchlings begin their swimming frenzy for several days until they reach the Sargasso Sea (www.seeturtles.org/). The Sargasso Sea is an area in the Atlantic Ocean, running along the Gulf Stream. The Sargasso Sea is made up of a floating seaweed called sargassum seaweed (class Phyaeophyceae). This seaweed has air pockets on its stem that allows it to float on the surface of the water. The seaweed provides the hatchlings with shelter from predators and a food source. Many small invertebrates live on the seaweed, which the hatchlings will eat. Sea turtles have lungs and must surface to breath. Since little hatchlings must stay at the surface to breath, the floating seaweed hides them from fish and flying predators that could eat them. These little hatchlings can spend 10 to 12 years in the sea, growing from hatchlings to juveniles ...
An excellent example of this are the annual outbreaks of ranavirus that have occurred within Florida Box Turtle populations in southwest Florida over the past few years. Ranaviruses have been called cold-blooded killers because they cause illness and death in cold-blooded wildlife such as fish, amphibians, and reptiles. This emerging viral disease has rarely been documented in Florida reptiles, possibly because no one knowledgeable about the disease has been looking. When the first turtle with characteristic clinical signs, such as swollen eyelids, plaques in the mouth, and nasal discharge was admitted to CROW in 2013, our veterinarians were highly suspicious. State wildlife veterinarians were immediately alerted and samples were submitted to the Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study (SCWDS), where the diagnosis was confirmed. Since then, we have documented outbreaks of ranavirus in Lee County box turtles every winter. Ranavirus typically exists at low prevalence (less than 5 percent ...
Process adopted to differentiate the two species which was earlier thought to be of single named species, C. porter. The team of scientists differentiated the two species through genetic and morphological studies, within this taxon. They find that there are two evolutionarily and spatially distinct lineages on the western and eastern sectors of the island, known as the Reserva and Cerro Fatal populations, respectively.. Analyses of DNA from natural populations and museum specimens, including the type specimen for C. porteri, confirm the genetic distinctiveness of these two lineages and support elevation of the Cerro Fatal tortoises to the rank of species. The identified that DNA characters that define this new species, and infer evolutionary relationships relative to other species of Galapagos tortoises.. Till date it was believed that the two giant tortoise populations on Island were the same species, but genetic testing proved this to be wrong ...

A thermally assisted magnetic head includes: a slider having a medium-facing surface; and a surface-emitting semiconductor laser. The slider has: a slider substrate, on which part of the medium-facing surface is formed; and a magnetic head portion, on which another part of the medium-facing surface is formed, and which has a first surface in contact with a head stacking surface of the slider substrate and a second surface opposite the first surface. The magnetic head portion has: a main magnetic pole that generates a write magnetic field from an end face on the side of the medium-facing surface; an optical waveguide core extending along the first surface and having a light exit surface at the medium-facing surface; and a diffraction grating, which is provided in the optical waveguide core or further towards the second surface than the optical waveguide core, and the refractive index of which varies periodically along the direction in which the optical waveguide core extends. The surface-emitting

Peperomia prostrata, also known as String of Turtles, is a rare and very hard-to-find trailing houseplant, but we found some especially for you! The strands of this indoor plant are packed with adorable little succulent leaves that look like miniature turtle shells. Please note that this dense houseplant may arrive with some of the leaves loose in the package. The good news is you can propagate the leaves to make new plants!
This 90-mile stretch of beach is the main reason people find themselves planning a trip to this region of Guyana. From March through August, Shell Beach becomes the nesting ground for four of the worlds eight endangered species of marine turtles: leatherback, green, hawksbill and olive ridley. Most of the worlds sea turtle nesting sites are visited by only one or two species, adding to the exceptionality of Shell Beach.. Shell Beach stretches from the mouth of the Waini River, along Guyanas northwestern sea coast to the Pomeroon Rivers mouth, a distance of roughly 90 miles. It is a rare swathe of undeveloped tropical coastland that, for the most part, remains ecologically undamaged. The entire area is broadly referred to as Shell Beach, but nine sections of beach have been given separate names, such as Almond, Kamwatta, Tiger and Gwennie. While largely unpopulated by permanent inhabitants, nearly 150 inhabitants occupy Almond Beach, near the Waini Rivers mouth; roughly 180 people reside at ...

When our patroller James recently discovered a turtle nest during a morning patrol, he covered up the tracks and the nest itself. But on returning, realised the nest had already been raided and the eggs were gone. EJFs turtle patrol staff are well known in the community and this ensured those near the nest told James who had poached the eggs.. The poacher was not at home when the patrollers went to visit, but the eggs were found in his house. The local authorities were informed, and following a case in front of the Grand Cess Magisterial Court, the poacher was imprisoned for a week and fined 25,000 Liberian dollars (around £135). Fines of this magnitude have not been seen before, and demonstrate a growing understanding and concern about the effect poaching is having on turtle populations. In order to ensure that this does not happen again, the poacher was warned by authorities while also helped by EJF patrollers to understand how destructive egg poaching can be. Despite James doing all he ...

If you thought the only drawbacks of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were that they cause your children to demand toys, whack each other with sticks and talk like surfers who have been in the sun too long, you`ve been deluding yourself. The muscle-bound little reptiles, I regret to inform you, have a political agenda, which is the same color as their shells: green. Not content with entertaining children, the Turtles want to indoctrinate them in environmentalist dogma and put them to work spreading it. Their book, ``ABC`s for a Better Planet,`` is a catechism of green theology, instructing kids in the True Word on everything from acid rain to animal rights and urging them to use this unleavened knowledge to become pests. ``Write to your government leaders at every level,`` it urges. ``Don`t buy or use products that hurt the environment. Get your folks and friends to do the same.``

The tortoise, Aboo, was found by a man and his teenage son, whose names are being kept in private, on Wednesday at around 2:00 p.m. in the bushes near where she made her escape, according to the Japan Times. They were rewarded with 500,000 yen and a lifetime pass to the zoo to visit the female Aldabra giant tortoise whenever they want.. I feel relieved. From now on, well make sure to take perfect care of our animals, zoo employee, Yoshini Yamane, said further adding that Aboo was in perfect condition and had not suffered any injury when she was found. ...

Zona pellucida (ZP) genes encode ZP glycoproteins which constitute the coat surrounding oocytes and early embryos. Genome-wide identification of ZP genes is still lacking in vertebrates, especially in fish species. Herein, we conducted bioinformatic analyses of the ZP genes of the Nile tilapia and other vertebrates. Totally 16, 9, 17, 27, 21, 20, 26, 19, 14,11, 24, 17, 9, 18, 8, 11, 9, 8, 5, and 4 ZP genes belonging to 5 subfamilies (ZPA, ZPB, ZPC, ZPD, and ZPAX) were found in the sea lamprey, elephant shark, coelacanth, spotted gar, zebrafish, medaka, stickleback, Nile tilapia, Amazon molly, platyfish, seahorse, Northern snakehead, cavefish, tetraodon, clawed frog, turtle, chicken, platypus, kangaroo rat, and human genomes, respectively ...

By John Lynds. [email protected]. Three East Boston students have joined eight other local area high school students on a trip to the Bahamas to study marine science.. Dina Bahloul, 18, Jessica Andrade, 18, and Lee Huang, 18 will be in Bimini, Bahamas until April 23 where they will scuba dive and experience marine biology up-close - seeing underwater wonders and discovering the interconnectedness between humans and the ocean - as part of the New England Aquariums (NEAQ) second Sea Teen Underwater Research, Training and Learning Expedition (TURTLE) program.. Like the three local teens, many of the other teens resided in urban neighborhoods and lacked or had limited swimming skills before learning about the program. This day was also Homecoming Day for the University of Wyoming in Laramie, where Matthew had been a student. The homecoming parade consisted of the usual procession of floats and marching bands, but the final group to march in the parade was a late addition. It consisted of a disorganized group of about a hundred people - students, teachers, university employees, and townspeople. Many of them wore yellow and green armbands. As they marched quietly by at the conclusion of the parade, spectators began to step off the sidewalks and joining in. By the time the parade reached campus, somewhere between five hundred to eight hundred people had joined the march.. Later that day, there was a moment of silence at War Memorial Stadium just before the start of the game. UW players bowed quietly as they held their helmets at their sides. The helmets bore special emblems designed by the University Multicultural Committee in honor of Matthew.. Ten years ago today was also Homecoming Day at Colorado State ...
Piper. August 18th, 2009 When I was working as a camp counselor in a Lutheran Bible camp one of my fellow counselors had a short joke that we all felt was very typical of the Lutheran sentiment. A Lutheran hears the word change and gets really confused for a moment. He then smiles and nods his head, change you say? , We call that death. It was meant that young Lutherans we would get very frustrated at some of the older members of the church, who it seemed wouldnt know change until they died.. Lutherans are very stubborn, it can be one of our best traits, but it can also shoot us in the foot. Ive heard this kind of vote often in the past. Its common to read the reports from different synod meetings say that they struck down this very same motion. it is a tactic that seems to be used often. P.S. I thought my Pastor was going, but hes taking a vacation, not going to the assembly.. ...

In an effort to address disproportionately high cancer rates among American Indians, the UC Davis Cancer Center formalized and expanded a partnership with the non-profit Turtle Health Foundation to create and improve programs in cancer education, research and training for American Indian tribes and tribal communities.. The partnership is a natural one, said Marlene M. von Friederichs-Fitzwater, director of the Outreach Research and Education Program at the UC Davis Cancer Center.
