A laboratory research study was carried out to select and optimize polybenzimidazole (PBI) reverse osmosis (RO) membranes for the treatment of chromium plating rinse water. The effects of important film casting and annealing variables on RO properties were investigated. Membranes were tested in high pressure flow cells with dilute sodium chloride and chromic acid feed solutions. PBI RO membranes were found to be resistant to attack by chromic acid. After pretesting with sodium chloride, the membranes showed a short-term effective level of rejection with chromic acid. Upon retesting with sodium chloride, the same membranes again exhibited high salt rejections, thereby demonstrating they had not been chemically attacked by chromic acid. We have characterized symmetric solid-state supercapacitors in swagelok cells using film electrodes made of novel hybrid materials based on multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNT) and phosphomolybdate polyanion (Cs-PMo12) with PVA as binder. These hybrid materials were carried out by Cs-PMo12 adhesion onto previously functionalized CNT, in order to disperse both components at a molecular level and use Cs-PMo12 as energy density enhancer in supercapacitor cells. Our results show high capacitance values (up to 285 F/g at I = 200 mA/g) due to the contribution of Cs-PMo12, which was revealed on the higher energy density values compared to pure CNT electrodes. The outermost layer contains polycrystalline diamond and particles of carbide or carbonitride of elements selected from the group consisting of W, Ti, Ta, Cr, Mo, Cb, V, Hf and Zr. The remaining layers adjacent the polycrystalline diamond layer are transition layers each comprising a composite containing diamond crystals, particles of tungsten carbide, and particles of titanium carbonitride. The average size of the diamond particles in the polycrystalline diamond layer is greater than the average size of the carbide or carbonitride particles; and the average size of the diamond particles in the transition layers is greater than the average sizes of the carbide and carbonitride particles. Efficient and selective oxidation of alcohols with NaIO4 catalyzed by an organic-inorganic hybrid material in which manganese(III)5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-aminophenyl)porphyrin chloride, MnIII(TAPP)Cl, is covalently linked to a Lindqvist structure of polyoxometalate, Mo6O192-, at room temperature is reported. The effect of various parameters such as catalyst amount, solvent and oxidant were studied. The catalyst, MnP-POM, showed high activity not only in the oxidation of benzylic and linear alcohols but also in the oxidation of secondary alcohols and their corresponding ketones were obtained in good yields. A good selectivity observed in the case of cinnamyl alcohol and the only alcoholic group is oxidized and no epoxide was obtained. The MnP-POM catalyst is stable under the reaction conditions and While, the homogeneous MnIII(TAPP)Cl cannot recover even one time, the hybrid catalyst can be filtered and reused several times without significant loss of its initial activity.
