Abortion in Trinidad and Tobago Abortion is a very serious issue in the nation of Trinidad and Tobago. These laws are very different from those in the United States, and have been in place for approximately 90 years. An abortion is one of the most common surgical procedures in Trinidad and Tobago, and most occur during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. Trinidad and Tobago was an island nation under British rule until 1962. Consequently, many of their statutes replicate those in the UK, including the Offences Against the Person Act of 1861 which states abortion is illegal. The UK case of Rex v. Bourne of 1938 is highly influential, even to this day, in Trinidad and Tobago abortion laws. Dr. Bourne was tried under the Offences Against the Person Act for administering an abortion to a 15 year old that had been raped by a group of soldiers. In this case, the prosecutions duty was to prove beyond reasonable doubt that the operation was not performed in good faith for the well-being of the girl. The ...

Energy Minister Franklin Khan yesterday promised members of the All Tobago Fisherfolk Association to establish a refuelling station for fishermen around Tobago, but urged other sections of the agriculture division to revamp its operations immediately. Vice president of the association, Curtis Douglas highlighted the issue during the Joint Select Committee on Land and Physical Infrastructures meeting at the Victor E Bruce Financial Complex in Scarborough. Douglas said Tobago fishermen have been neglected for the past few years causing the fishing industry to suffer and their pleas to have a refuelling station were ignored. He said fishermen resorted to illegally transporting gas in a jug to refuel their fishing vessels. Khan said he was unaware that there was never a refuelling station available for boat owners in Tobago but promised to address their concern. ...

The deep water offshore Trinidad and Tobago represents the possibility of a Tier 1 prospect for BHP Billiton Petroleum (BHPB), David Rainey, president of exploration, told delegates early last week at the annual Trinidad & Tobago Energy Conference hosted by the Energy Chamber of Trinidad & Tobago in Port of Spain.. Rainey said BHPB defines a Tier 1 prospect as a petroleum system that has at least 5 billion bbl of oil in place and is able to deliver at least 100,000 boe/d to the company.. Rainey said the company recently completed a seismic acquisition campaign in its deepwater acreage. He showed a cross-section of the seismic survey, calling attention to the first prospect-Le Clerc-which is a very large geological structure that BHPB suspects could be oil-prone based on the results of a piston core test.. Rainey said, That red patch at the top of the structure likely indicates the presence of hydrocarbons. It doesnt say anything about the type of hydrocarbon, or the thickness or quality of ...

In 2016, Trinidad and Tobago ranked 91st in the world (out of 114 countries) in wage equality between men and women for similar work. Research shows that there are substantial wage differences between men and women in Trinidad and Tobago. While women account for the largest entry into both the workforce and education, a 2015 study [15] shows that their wages are still less than men. On average, women earn USD$22,656 a year, while for that same period, men earns USD$41,527[10]. In the private sector, it appears that female workers, regardless of their position along the wage distribution, face a similar degree of discrimination.[16] At the aggregate level, there is a significant difference between male and female wages. Investigation showed that the demographics with the highest levels of discrimination were in the age groups 35-44, income levels $3,000-$5,999 and private sector employment vs public sector.[17] As of 2015, the wage gap is found to be larger in the private sector than the public ...

Abstract. Dengue fever is endemic to Trinidad and Tobago. A retrospective analysis of all adult admissions at a tertiary hospital in Trinidad treated for dengue during January 1-December 31, 2008 was performed. A total of 186 patients were treated during this period: 98.9% (184) of the patients were thrombocytopenic; 45.2% were severely thrombocytopenic; 13 patients showed development of minor hemorrhage and only one case of major hemorrhage; platelet transfusion was given for 7% (13) of the cases; and 6 cases for which platelet transfusion was given did not show evidence of plasma leakage (12 of these cases did not show evidence of hemorrhage). There was a strong association between the lowest platelet value and hemoconcentration (χ2 = 13.16, P | 0.025). No association was found between giving a platelet transfusion and hemoconcentration or hemorrhage. Thrombocytopenia seen in dengue resolves spontaneously and independent of any transfusion used.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a group of non-infectious diseases that cause hyperglycemia. DM symptoms were first clinically described by ancient Greek physicians whose prescriptions included plant-based remedies. Today, DM affects |400 million people globally and prevalence rates are rapidly increasing in developing countries where basic healthcare relies on local knowledge of botanical remedies. Many developing countries are home to diverse peoples and plants-providing fodder for varied plant-selection strategies and unique botanical pharmacopoeias. I addressed the plant-selection strategies used in a multi-ethnic, developing country, Trinidad and Tobago (T&T), to ascertain their role in shaping the local antidiabetic pharmacopoeia and to assess their benefits and risks in identifying safe and useful remedies. Using literature reviews, field surveys, and laboratory bioassays, I completed three categories of analysis. Ethnobotanical analyses showed that T&Ts antidiabetic pharmacopoeia is primarily of

The Caribbean Nations Security Conference, co-hosted by the United States Southern Command and Trinidad and Tobago in Port of Spain in February 2011, focused on countering illicit trafficking. Diálogo spoke with Trinidad and Tobago Chief of Defence and conference co-host, Brigadier General Roland Maunday, to discuss this topic and other threats affecting the region such as the spread of criminal gangs. DIÁLOGO: What are the main security concerns for Trinidad and Tobago at this time? BRIDADIER GEN. ROLAND MAUNDAY: Like most of the islands of the Caribbean, our problems relate to drugs, guns and ammunition, and the porous borders that we have throughout the region. We need to secure our borders as best as we can, so that we can stem the flow of illicit trafficking across borders of people and drugs. Arms and ammunition play a critical part in crime in Trinidad and Tobago, and as a result, if we are able to stop guns and ammunition from coming here, we may be able stem the level of crime that we ...

To address questions related to the functional importance of this phenotype, the authors conducted a field experiment on both islands with snake replicas made of clay. These results clearly indicated a strong inter-island difference in predator attack rates where snake replicas that resembled coral snakes received protection in Trinidad but not in Tobago. Color patterns from museum specimens confirmed that E. ocellatus is indeed a poor mimic of coral snakes in many respects, especially in regards to the relative proportions of colors and the lack of discrete band. This implies that the classic coral snake mimicry adaptation has been degraded in this species. Field experiment revealed that E. ocellatus replicas were not protected from predator attacks on Tobago (where no coral snakes occur) compared to controls. However, on Trinidad (where coral snakes do occur) we found the expected lower attack rate on coral snake and mimic replicas compared to controls. Thus, E. ocellatus does not just look ...
On Saturday, July 25th at around 5:50 p.m., a team including a Volcanologist from the SRC, Grenadas Acting National Disaster Coordinator, and a camera person, participated in a fly over of the Kick-em-Jenny area by helicopter. The volcanologist, Dr. Frederic Dondin, who has conducted extensive research on Kick-em-Jenny, concluded, after his observations, that there was absolutely nothing unusual in the area.. Based on the above findings, and given the fact that the activity levels at Kick-em- Jenny has diminished, the Government of Grenada, based on the advice of the SRC has lowered the alert level to YELLOW with immediate effect.. The YELLOW alert level means that vessels should observe a 1.5 km exclusion zone. However, as a precautionary measure, the marine community is advised to continue observing the 5 km exclusion zone.. ...
In populations with male mate-choice copying, males may mitigate their risk of sexual competition by reducing their preference for a particular female in the presence of sexual rivals (audience). Because of the cost of missed mating opportunities from such an audience effect, males should reduce their mating preference to a greater extent in the presence of more sexually competitive rivals compared with less competitive ones. We tested this hypothesis using the Trinidadian guppy (Poecilia reticulata). We compared a focal males baseline mating preference for either of 2 stimulus females, which differed in overall body size, in the absence of any sexual rival to his preference for the same females in the presence of a sexual rival using dichotomous-choice tests. Focal and audience males differed in body length and proportion of their body covered in orange and black pigmentation. In the presence of a larger rival, focal males exhibited a greater reduction in preference for their initially ...

Bycatch of turtles in fishing nets has been identified as the most serious threat to the turtle populations in Trinidad, and the Fisheries Division and Wildlife Section of the Government are now working towards bringing in new methods of fishing as mitigation. The Caribbean Network for Integrated Rural Development (CNIRD) is now also working with the Matelot NGO on a biodiversity study, with potential for further work with the Caribbean Regional Environmental Programme (CREP) and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The involvement of these organisations is imperative to the continuation of the monitoring work. So far, the project is proving to be sustainable, and with further development of the ecotourism venture will give the project the extra stability that is required, and hopefully create more jobs within the community.. Trinidad and Tobago, May 5, 2017 - Port of Spain - Community participation is critical to the success of any programme designed to eliminate breeding sites of the Aedes aegypti mosquito. Efforts are doomed to failure if even one household is negligent. So said Dr C James Hospedales, Executive Director of the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA), as he commented on the importance of Caribbean Mosquito Awareness Week, which is being observed from May 8-12. In his assessment of the mosquito prevention efforts in the Region thus far, Dr Hospedales noted that strategies for the control of the mosquito, which causes Dengue, Chikungunya and Zika are failing, and stated that what is needed is an all hands onboard approach. Dr Karen Polson Edwards, CARPHA Assistant Director of Surveillance, Disease Prevention Control, supports this all hands onboard approach perspective as she said, mosquitoes are social creatures and we are their preferred host. Their breeding sites are mostly man-made water ...

The main risk areas for oil spills from ships are at the passages where the density of traffic is particularly high. The busiest passages are through the Yucatan Channel, the Bahamas Channel and the Florida Strait (ITOPF 2003). According to GESAMP 2007, there are an estimated 250 oil spills in the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea annually. The worlds largest ever tanker spill occurred off Trinidad and Tobago in 1979 when two tankers collided and 287 000 tonnes of crude oil was discharged to the sea (ITOPF 2003). Additionally the second largest oil spill in history occurred in the Gulf of Mexico, also in 1979, during a blowout of Ixtoc I an exploratory oil well, spilling 454 000- 480 000 tons of crude oil into the marine environment (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ixtoc_I). Recent large oil spills include the Mega Borg tanker explosion in 1990 off Texas, USA, spilling 17 000 tonnes, the barge Morris J. Berman in 1994 spilling approximately 3.7 million litres off Punta Escambrón in San Juan, ...
The orange-winged amazon (Amazona amazonica), also known locally as orange-winged parrot and loro guaro, is a large amazon parrot. It is a resident breeding bird in tropical South America, from Colombia, Trinidad and Tobago south to Peru, Bolivia and central Brazil. Its habitat is forest and semi-open country. Although common, it is persecuted as an agricultural pest and by capture for the pet trade (over 66,000 captured from 1981 to 1985). It is also hunted as a food source. Introduced breeding populations have been reported in Puerto Rico [2]. ...

Introgressive hybridization is described in several phylogenetic studies of mass-spawning corals. However, the prevalence of this process among brooding coral species is unclear. We used a mitochondrial (mtDNA: nad5) and two nuclear (nDNA: ATPSα and SRP54) intron markers to explore species barriers in the coral genus Madracis and address the role of hybridization in brooding systems. Specimens of six Caribbean Madracis morphospecies were collected from 5 to 60 m depth at Buoy One, Curaçao, supplemented by samples from Aruba, Trinidad & Tobago and Bermuda. Polymerase chain reaction and denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis were coupled to detect distinct alleles within single colonies. The recurrent nDNA phylogenetic non-monophyly among taxa is only challenged by Madracis senaria, the single monophyletic species within the genus. nDNA AMOVAs indicated overall statistical divergence (0.1% significance level) among species but pairwise comparisons of genetic differentiation revealed some gene ...

Sadam Ali, Canarsies beleagured U.S. Olympic boxer who is on voluntary suspension for testing positive for high levels of the stimulant cathine, has retained the services of noted New York attorney Salvatore Strazzullo.. Strazzullo currently is representing Milana Dravnel in her $100 million lawsuit against Oscar De La Hoya over the legitimacy of lurid photos she took of the boxer in lingerie. The 19-year-old Ali is awaiting the results of a B sample test to see if he will be allowed to participate in an Olympic qualifier March 10-18 in Trinidad and Tobago. Although Ali, a lightweight, is on the U.S. Olympic boxing team, he must qualify to compete in the 2008 Games. The third and final qualifier is in Guatemala in April. An antihistamine Ali took to treat a head cold at a test event in Beijing from Nov. 17-22 may have been responsible for the elevated levels of cathine in Alis system, according to Jim Millman, CEO of USA Boxing. I am 100% confident that he will not only be vindicated, but ...

The Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) is the Treaty banning all nuclear explosions - everywhere, by everyone. The Treaty was negotiated at the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva and adopted by the United Nations General Assembly. It opened for signature on 24 September 1996. Since then, the Treaty has reached near-universality. 182 countries have signed the Treaty - the last country to do so was Trinidad and Tobago on 8 October 2009 which also ratified the Treaty on 26 May 2010. 154 countries have ratified the Treaty - most recently Ghana on 14 June 2011. Why is the CTBT so important? The CTBT is the last barrier on the way to develop nuclear weapons. It curbs the development of new nuclear weapons and the improvement of existing nuclear weapon designs. When the Treaty enters into force it provides a legally binding norm against nuclear testing. The Treaty also helps prevent human suffering and environmental damages caused by nuclear testing. How many nuclear tests were conducted and ...

Sexual selection is thought to be opposed by natural selection such that ornamental traits express a balance between these two antagonistic influences. Phenotypic variation among populations may indicate local shifts in this balance, or that different stable solutions are possible, but testing these alternatives presents a major challenge. In the guppy (Poecilia reticulata), a small freshwater fish with male-limited ornamental coloration, these issues can be addressed by transplanting fish among sites of varying predation pressure, thus effectively manipulating the strength and nature of natural selection. Here, we contrast the evolutionary outcome of two such introductions conducted in the Trinidadian El Cedro and Aripo Rivers. ...
2017 the Authors. Functional Ecology published by John Wiley. &. Sons Ltd on behalf of British Ecological Society. Within populations, individuals can vary in stress response, a multivariate phenomenon comprising neuroendocrine, physiological and behavioural traits. Verbal models of individual stress coping style have proposed that the behavioural component of this variation can be described as a single axis, with each individuals coping style being consistent across time and stress contexts. Focusing on this behavioural component of stress response and combining repeated measures of multiple traits with a novel multivariate modelling framework, we test for the existence of coping style variation and assess its stability across contexts in the Trinidadian guppy (Poecilia reticulata). Specifically, we test the following hypotheses: (1) there exists repeatable among-individual behavioural (co)variation (personality) within a mild stress context consistent with a risk-averse-risk-prone ...

Similar to other Fancy Guppies, the Assorted Female Guppy does best in an established aquarium of at least 20 gallons. Though tolerant of small changes, care should be taken to maintain stable water parameters. Hardy plant varieties such as Java Fern and Java Moss are excellent choices for creating a lush, planted aquarium housing the Assorted Female Guppy. Though best displayed in a biotope or colony aquarium, the Assorted Female Guppy is a very peaceful fish that does well in freshwater community aquariums housing tankmates of similar temperament. The Assorted Female Guppy is an omnivore and requires both algae-based foods as well as meaty foods. An algae-based flake food, along with freeze-dried bloodworms, tubifex, and brine shrimp will provide guppies with the proper nutrition. Approximate Purchase Size: 3/4 to 1 ...
