The commercial large scale capture of Amazonian Manatee was the main reason for the reduction of the populations of the species. The main current threats for Manatees are hunting for meat consumption (Denkinger 2010, Brice et al. 2011, Utreras et al. 2013, Sandoval 2015), entanglement in fishing nets and habitat alterations.. Illegal hunting, for both subsistence and local use, is considered the main threat to Manatees in the Amazon. Manatee populations have supported a tremendous take in past centuries and, although not at commercial levels, hunting still takes place throughout the region (Barbosa et al. 2010a, b; Franzini et al. 2013; Silva et al. 2014; M. Marmontel pers. obs). Most hunting is practiced with the use of traditional harpoons, but in Ecuador Manatees may be caught in traps set for Arapaima (Hidalgo 2010).. Hunters usually sell products to neighbors and nearby communities, but the meat is sometimes sold in local produce fairs or markets in the interior, or by order directly with ...

|p| The male reproductive tract is made up of a series of organs including testes, epididymides, vas deferens, accessory sex glands, seminal vesicles, prostate, and the penis. The reproductive system is made up of specialized cells, tissues, and structures that begin to develop in the uterus, but the only function at puberty. These tissues are well vascularized and innervated and are controlled by an intricate interplay with the endocrine system. Structures of the male reproductive system interact with their endocrine controllers and each other to ensure proper initiation and maintenance of androgen production and spermatogenesis. The normal development of the male reproductive system can be divided into five phases: fetal, neonatal, childhood, puberty, and adulthood. Exposures to potential toxicants may have different reproductive outcomes depending on the dosage and duration of the toxicant exposure, as well as the developmental stage and timing when an organism is exposed. This is a list of tetrapods that are semiaquatic; that is, while being at least partly terrestrial, they spend part of their life cycle or a significant fraction of their time in water as part of their normal behavior, and/or obtain a significant fraction of their food from an aquatic habitat. The very earliest tetrapods, such as Ichthyostega, were semiaquatic, having evolved from amphibious lobe-finned fish. Some marine mammals, such as the marine otter, the polar bear and pinnipeds, are semiaquatic, while others, such as the sea otter, cetaceans and sirenians, are fully aquatic. The only fully aquatic nonmarine mammals are several manatees (the Amazonian manatee and some populations of African manatee) and certain small cetaceans (river dolphins, the tucuxi, and some populations of Irrawaddy dolphin and finless porpoise). No bird species is fully aquatic, as all must lay and incubate their amniotic eggs, as well as begin raising their young, on land or ice. Similarly among marine reptiles, sea ...
We examined mating behaviour in the harpacticoid copepod Tisbe battagliai Volkmann-Rocco, 1972, in particular the process of delivering spermatophore seminal contents to the female urosome. Labelling using 4′6′ diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) coupled with two-photon confocal laser scanning microscopy successfully visualised the spermatophore and female internal reproductive system. Sections of the female urosome were imaged to examine seminal fluid stores. The female tissues were found to auto-fluoresce as red emission under green excitation, requiring no additional tissue labelling. DAPI-labelled seminal fluid stores were identified within the female reproductive system. The details observed agreed with previous descriptions of copepod reproductive anatomy and of spermatophores. Specimens cultured under pH 8.10 and a simulated ocean acidification scenario (pH 7.67) were compared for changes in reproductive anatomy and spermatophore size and site attachment. No differences were observed in
The ovary produces the egg by a process called oogenesis. In contrast to spermatogenesis in the bull which is continuous, oogenesis is cyclic. This cycle of egg development in cattle is called the estrous cycle and is typically 20 to 21 days in length. During the estrous cycle, two prominent structures are present within the ovary, the follicle and corpora lutea.. Each of these structures undergo a development and subsequent regression phase during the estrous cycle. Follicles begin within the ovary as one of several thousand primary follicles, which consist of a germ cell surrounded by a layer of flattened cells. This germ cell has the potential to mature into an egg if the follicle completes the development phase. However, only a small percentage of primary follicles continue through the secondary and tertiary follicular phases and ultimately undergo ovulation. Primary follicles that never complete development die and are replaced by newly formed primary follicles.. The relatively few primary ...

Keeping reproductive anatomy a mystery is just another facet of sexism in our society: trying to discourage girls from being sexually liberated. The more you know about your body, the more educated youll be on how to enjoy it safely, and a lot of people dont really want you to do that. But its also dangerous: if we dont arm people with the correct vocabulary to describe their anatomy, they wont know how to explain various health issues they might experience; they wont know how to accurately tell their doctors whats going on. And if we continue acting like knowing your sexual anatomy is shameful, theyre not going to want to speak up when something is wrong ...

The West Indian Manatee is currently listed as a threatened species by the U.S Fish and Wildlife service. A threatened designation means population levels still are at risk of becoming endangered again in the foreseeable future. This project seeks to forecast how many manatees would perish from watercraft strikes (the greatest threat to their survival) based upon the most current method utilized for projecting manatee population growth. The latest version, known as the Core Biological Model (version 6) or CBMv6, was employed along with the most current manatee population data, which was provided by Dr. Jeffrey A. Hostetler. Dr. Hostetler is the predominate research scientist for the Florida Manatee population. The most current Florida Manatee total population stands at: 6,352. The results sought are the total number of watercraft deaths, expected for the next 10 consecutive years. The calculation will require, from the current population, predicting the population growth factors for each of the four

Eriophyoids are an ancient group of highly miniaturized, morphologically simplified and diverse phytoparasitic mites. Their possible numerous host-switch events have been accompanied by considerable homoplastic evolution. Although several morphological cladistic and molecular phylogenetic studies attempted to reconstruct phylogeny of Eriophyoidea, the major lineages of eriophyoids, as well as the evolutionary relationships between them, are still poorly understood. New phylogenetically informative data have been provided by the recent discovery of the early derivative pentasetacine genus Loboquintus, and observations on the eriophyoid reproductive anatomy. Herein, we use COI and D1-2 rRNA data of 73 eriophyoid species (including early derivative pentasetacines) from Europe, the Americas and South Africa to reconstruct part of the phylogeny of the superfamily, and infer on the basal divergence of eriophyoid taxa. In addition, a comparative CLSM study of the female internal genitalia was... ...

It is a known fact that men and women have different type of reproductive anatomy and physiology. Still there are some curious facts which you have to know before going through this article. Testosterone also known as male hormone is present in both men and women. Men secrete a lot of it and women secrete it in a very little quantity.
I Wonder What Happens Next lessons begin with a review of prior knowledge about puberty and development of guidelines for a safe and productive classroom climate. Students learn about reproduction, fetal development, reproductive anatomy and physiology, and the social-emotional changes in puberty. Students learn to differentiate between respectful, healthy relationships versus disrespectful, unhealthy relationships. Students practice interpersonal skills for healthy relationships and refusal skills for risky sexual situations. The emphasis is on motivating young people to make behavioral choices that will keep themselves healthy now and for future reproductive health.. Four additional optional lessons are provided on genetics, standing up to peer pressure, and prevention of disease and pregnancy. Because students at this age are becoming more independent and social, some will be on the cusp of making decisions regarding sexual activity; thus, they will benefit from the additional instructional ...

The Florida manatee (Trichechus manatus latirostris) is classified as an endangered species and is also protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act. The manatees coastal distribution coincides with areas of high human density, making manatees particularly vulnerable to human impacts. Important management decisions on both the state and federal level rely heavily on extinction models that require estimates of survival and reproductive rates. Current mark-recapture methods are unable to estimate survival rates for younger age classes because many young manatees lack the unique scarring used to identify individuals. Using an age-ratio technique, this research utilizes carcass recovery data to provide estimates of survival rates of Florida manatees , 4.5 years old while quantifying and incorporating all sources of uncertainty. The age-ratio technique requires counts of carcasses in each age class, carcass detection probabilities, and the proportion of animals alive in each age class. In order ...

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a disease that is characterized by uncontrolled proliferation of clonal neoplastic cells and accumulation in the bone marrow of blasts with an impaired differentiation program. AML accounts for approximately 80% of all adult leukemias and remains the most common cause of leukemia death. Two major types of genetic events have been described that are crucial for leukemic transformation. A proposed necessary first event is disordered cell growth and upregulation of cell survival genes. The most common of these activating events were observed in the RTK Flt3, in N-Ras and K-Ras, in Kit, and sporadically in other RTKs. Alterations in myeloid transcription factors governing hematopoietic differentiation provide second necessary event for leukemogenesis. Transcription factor fusion proteins such as AML-ETO, PML-RARalpha or PLZF-RARalpha block myeloid cell differentiation by repressing target genes. In other cases, the transcription factors themselves are mutated ...

The testicle is located outside the body cavity in the scrotum and has two vital functions: producing the spermatozoa, and producing the male hormone, testosterone. Location of the testicles exterior to the body cavity is essential for normal sperm formation, which occurs only at 4 degrees to 5 degrees below body temperature. The scrotum provides physical protection to the testicle and helps regulate the temperature for optimum spermatozoa development. This regulation is done by coordination of three structures: a temperature-sensitive layer of muscle (tunica dartos) located in the walls of the scrotum, which relaxes when hot and contracts when cold; the external cremaster muscle within the spermatic cord, which controls the proximity of the testicle to the body by lengthening or shortening depending on environmental temperature; and a counter-current temperature exchange regulated by a blood flow process known as the pampiniform plexus, which is a coil of testicular veins that provide an ...

Currently, there are an estimated 6,350 manatees in Florida. In fact, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is now proposing to change the manatees status on the Federal Endangered Species list from endangered to threatened. Mr. Jim Valade, the Florida manatee recovery coordinator for the agency said, manatees are no longer in intensive care.. Jeff Allebach said he has watched the number of manatees increase. In the late 1990s Allebach said, it was great for the event to have 70 manatees. Jeff still believes manatees should stay on the endangered list. Just because you have a little bit of success, you dont stop what youre doing. Janice Nearing, Director of Public Relations for the Save the Manatee Club explained the animals population is growing, however she called the change in manatee status premature and still believes its a critical time for them. Janice said, There are a lot of threats that exist. Those are not going away, theyre growing and we do have to address them before we ...

The topographic anatomy of the male reproductive organs of the African sideneck (Pelusios castaneus) turtle was explored through dissection. The testis and epididymis were attached to the peritoneal wall in all the turtles examined, posterior to the lungs, ventrolateral to the kidneys. The testes were yellow, smooth and ovoid in shape while the epididymes were sigmoid in shape and creamy in colour. The ureter, ductus deferens and urinary bladder led into the cloaca, which opened to the exterior at the tip of the tail. The penis was completely housed within the ventral floor of the cloaca and consists of two corpora cavernosa in between which was the urethral groove. The male reproductive anatomy of the African sideneck turtle is similar to those earlier reported in sea and freshwater turtles ...
Introducing a Book by Kristen Lilla, LCSW.. Whats a vulva? Where is the clitoris? Can you pee while wearing a tampon? With sexuality being such a taboo conversation, its no surprise that many people cannot answer these basic questions. Surveys indicate most people cannot even identify major parts of female reproductive anatomy, such as the vagina and labia. A survey conducted by Summers Eve found that 70% of women cannot identify major parts of their own anatomy while a study in the U.K. found that one in four women do not understand how the menstrual cycle works.. …Read More. ...
A female duck may choose a mate, but his buddies wont care. In some duck species, 40 percent of all copulations are forced upon females. Yet fewer than 5 percent of these species offspring are sired by undesirables. It turns out the female has a few tricks up her, well, vagina.. Patricia Brennan, a research associate in ecology and evolutionary biology, was the first scientist to examine the labyrinthine reproductive anatomy of duck females. It looks like an obstacle course, she says. (For more on her studies, see Birth Control for Ducks.). In many duck species, reproductive tracts are long and corkscrew-shaped.. In most bird species, the female reproductive tract is a simple tube tucked inside the birds cloaca, its single opening for reproduction and excretion. But in many duck species, males have developed long and usually corkscrew-shaped penises. Females, Brennan discovered, can have equally long corkscrew-shaped vaginas.. But, Brennan says, the organs spiral in opposite ...

It was fun to finally be able to share some of the results of all these past years of work, and to be able to show how Im beginning to identify distinct manatee populations across Africa. My hope is that once populations are defined and their genetic diversity is known, that it will help to direct conservation and management efforts and funding towards the most critical places and populations. The Manatee Acoustic Detection Sensor Protection System is composed of an array of unique acoustic transmitters and receivers that provide non-contact detection of manatees as they pass through the gates of the lock. When a manatee blocks the acoustic beams, which they cannot hear, the gates stop and remain open long enough to allow them to pass through safely. Harbor Branch recently received a $5.8 million federal contract from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to install the system in southern Florida on the six navigation locks around Lake Okeechobee. Among these are Moore Haven lock at Clewiston and the Port Mayaca lock where the St. Lucie River meets Lake Okeechobee, a waterway that links the Atlantic Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico. Renowned as a hub of aquatic research, engineers at Harbor Branch designed manatee protective pressure systems more than a decade ago for canal lift gates used by the South Florida Water Management District. Last summer, the Harbor Branch manatee protection team ...
