Bioremediation is of great interest in the detoxification of soil contaminated with residues from explosives such as hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX). Although there are numerous forms of in situ and ex situ bioremediation, ruminants would provide the option of an in situ bioreactor that could be transported to the site of contamination. Iron-doped triazine porous organic polymers were obtained by in situ polymerization of iron pre- cursor and 1,2- or 1,4- dicyanobenzene (DCB). In order to obtain the actual catalyst, the polymer obtained was subjected to thermal treatment under NH3. The catalysts obtained exhibit activity and durability for the oxygen reduction reaction in acid electrolyte. Thorough characterization of the catalysts reveal the formation of several types of iron species, including metallic iron, iron carbides and Fe-Nx moieties. Soils on military ranges, located throughout the world in various climatic regions and close to human activities, are especially susceptible to cyclic nitramine contamination. The properties of soils on military ranges will directly affect the cyclic nitramine contamination and biodegradation; however, studies in this area are limited. The base catalytic properties of a series of triazine-based covalent organic frameworks were evaluated for the conversion of CO2 to organic carbonates. The high number of basic nitrogen sites of the as-synthesized frameworks efficiently catalyzed the formation of cyclic carbonates via the cycloaddition of CO2 to different starting epoxides. In this work, magnetic functionality was introduced to cross-linked acrylamide-based particles via the in situ coprecipitation of iron oxide nanoparticles within the hydrogel particle interior. Cibacron Blue F3G-A was then incorporated onto the magnetic hydrogel scaffold to facilitate the harvest of targeted protein species. The dye-loaded magnetic particles were physically characterized, and their protein sequestration performance was investigated. The results of these studies indicated that dye-loaded magnetic particles sequestered a greater amount of lower molecular weight proteins from the test solution than was achieved using reference particles, dye-loaded cross-linked N-isopropylacrylamide-based core-shell particles. This difference in protein harvesting ability may reflect the higher degree of dye-loading in the magnetic particles relative to the dye-loaded core-shell particles.

A filter media component (416, 516, 616) containing activated carbon, which undesirably filters chlorine from water in an aquatic reservoir (301) in which a minimum level of chlorine is desired to be maintained, is inserted into a fluid pumping path for water from the reservoir to reduce levels of cyanuric acid without purging the reservoir. Once levels of cyanuric acid drop below a target reduced concentration, chlorine and other required chemicals may be added to the water to restore proper water balance and increase the chlorine concentration to at least the minimum level of chlorine desired to be maintained. The process, which can be completed in a short period of time with sufficient quantities of activated carbon, need only be performed seasonally or periodically and avoids waste and potential damage associated with purging and replacing the water within the aquatic reservoir to reduce cyanuric acid levels.

Hypoxia, a hallmark feature of the tumor microenvironment, causes resistance to conventional chemotherapy, but was recently reported to synergize with poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase inhibitors (PARPis) in homologous recombination-proficient (HR-proficient) cells through suppression of HR. While this synergistic killing occurs under severe hypoxia (,0.5% oxygen), our study shows that moderate hypoxia (2% oxygen) instead promotes PARPi resistance in both HR-proficient and -deficient cancer cells. Mechanistically, we identify reduced ROS-induced DNA damage as the cause for the observed resistance. To determine the contribution of hypoxia to PARPi resistance in tumors, we used the hypoxic cytotoxin tirapazamine to selectively kill hypoxic tumor cells.
